Parked across the bay area. We are entering week five of this unhealthy air. Lets get right to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. What are you seeing, jeff . We are seeing some improvements here as we head through the next 24 and 48hour timeline, but its going to be a little bit slow going. We are still in the unhealthy range here for much of the bay area with that smoke and that haze staying pretty constant. But we have started to notice a key change as of the past several hours, and thats a look at these smoke plumes. You can see how the smoke plumes today were moving more off to the north and the east from the fire near fresno and also those two large fires to the away, an this storm system developing off the coastline. This is a real slow mover. Its going to take its time getting here, but as that surface cold front and the upper level low pressure system moves across, it will begin to change our air quality. Tomorrow morning we are still forecasting some unhealthy air, but in the coming days, there will be some moderate air quality returning. Ill pinpoint the timeline of this. Ill see you back here in about 18 minutes. Even moderate would be great news. Thank you, jeff. Its been nearly a month of these spare the air alerts. People are simply itching to get out. If you do, could you be doing more harm than good to your health . Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd looked into it. Reporter bad air shut down this outdoor covid testing site in concord, but people all over the bay area felt safe enough to exercise outside. I play tennis, so were going to limit our tennis playing tonight. Today seems like its a lot better compared to a few days ago. I cant smell it anymore. Reporter that doesnt mean the air is safe. We are in a whats called a red zone for the air quality index, which means this is unhealthy air for everybody. Reporter Kaiser Hospital santa clara pulmonologist tom dailey says some people may think exercising may outweigh the risks of exposure to bad air, but thats simply not true. Its the equivalent of smoking a pack or a half a pack of cigarettes in a day, going out into this area right now. Reporter according to the index, zero to 50 is good. 50 to 100 is considered moderate. 100 to 150 is unhealthy for sensitive groups and children. 150 to 200 is what were in right now. I know im risking my lung capacity and my respiratory system, and especially with a pandemic being very real right now, its definitely a back and forth before i come out here. But i need my body to move. Reporter ispending time out youre inhaling ultrafine particles in the air that are dangerous to your lungs. People mean well by exercising, but they are doing more harm than good by exercising during poor air quality. Reporter as for when it will be safe, not tomorrow. Dr. Dailey says it will be three or four more days before the air clears enough to resume outdoor activity. In concord, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. Its easy to track the air quality specifically in your neighborhood. Go to our website. Click on the air quality tracker on our trending bar. Then scroll down to the link. Thats at nbcbayarea. Com. They really dont have with, as they say, more explosive trees than we have in california. Reporter in sacramento, the president met with governor gavin newsom and other state leaders who urged him to recognize that Climate Change is causing severe throughoudrought extreme heat thats fueling the fires. I think theres an area of at least commonality on vegetation forest management, but please respect and i know you do the difference of opinion out here as it relates to this fundamental issue on the issue of Climate Change. If we ignore that science and sort of put our head in the sand and think its all about vegetation management, were not going to succeed to protecting californians. Okay. It will start getting cooler. You just watch. I wish science agreed with you. Well, i dont think science knows actually. Reporter newsom told the president that 57 o californias forests are owned and managed by the larry gerston, nbc bay areas political analyst, says perhaps the president doesnt realize that. He doesnt really understand or acknowledge the extent to which the federal government is is responsible for so much of the forest fires in california. The fact of the matter is the federal government owns more land in this state, more forest land than the states and private sectors and others combined. And more than that, if you look at the source acreagewise of where the forest fires start, its in the its largely in the hands of federal forests. Reporter former Vice President joe biden is calling the president a climate arsonist a and says President Trump is in de denial. This is another crisis he wont take responsibility for. Until the city is open and theres a lot of fun things for people to do and enjoy those tourist activities, were probably not going to see that. Reporter hotels are also not going to see conventioneers or business travelers. Two groups which account for a majority of their business. Everything that sort of makes this place hum is out the door with the exception of leisure travel. Its relative good compared to the rest of the bay area. Yeah, were seeing these slight changes as the fog is building in at the coastline. Its all part of this system ive been tracking for days cl. This is where were going to get our help from. So let me bring you the overall expansive view of the weather chart and what im looking at right now. Its all about this trough of low pressure offshore. This is a disturbance in the atmosphere that looks Strong Enough that as it continues to move closer and closer, its going to disrupt the pattern and the winds in the upper levels, 20,000 to 30,000 feet up, theyre going to help to usher out some of this most harmful smoke as we head through the next three days. Theres that area of low pressure. The wind will kick up and smoke moving off toward the east. Tuesday night into friday is wrl when this gets going pretty good. I still think for tomorrow morning for most of us, well wake up with some of that unhealthy air. But then eventually i do think well slide back into the moderate category, certainly as we head into wednesday and thursday based on the current fire activity. Now, if we see the fire activity change, of course this is all off the table. But right now looking at that improvement wednesday and thursday. Lets get you ready for tomorrow morning because we still have covid. The smoke is in the air, its lingering around and we all have stuff to do. Temperatures will be in the low 60s to start. 61 in the trivalley. Right over to San Francisco, watch out for not only the fog but the possibility of some spotty drizzle. Temperatures tomorrow also going to be on the increase with less thick smoke overhead. The sun is going to be able to heat us up more than it did last week. We will go up to 87 in antioch. 79 in san jose. 82 in napa. 80 in santa rosa. For San Francisco, 67. There will be some rain with that approaching system, but its mainly to the north. Eureka to portland, anywhere from a tenth to about a half inch on average. Down into San Francisco, 0. 03 of an inch. My temperatures in San Francisco next couple of days will stay in the 60s with, again, that improving air quality wednesday and thursday. And for the inland valleys, were going to stay pretty comfortable temperaturewise. Not getting too hot with some 80s the next couple of days, even down to 78 on friday as that system finally passes over northern california. Normally a slowmoving system isnt good, but in this case its going to help us out, raj, because its going to kind of sit and keep kind of disrupting things. So everything on track to get some better air in here wednesday and thursday. Thats great. Even saying the rain up north in oregon and washington, very helpful for those states because theyre getting hit so hard right now. Definitely. Thanks, jeff. A closer look at a bright idea. The same thing with our fires to the north. The smoke is heading to the north and east as well. With that system offshore, i still think tomorrow will fluctuate into the unhealthy range at times. But by tuesday night into wednesday and thursday, we should start stepping back into the moderate category based on the current fire behavior. So, again, some better air coming our way, a little bit better tomorrow, and then some marked changes certainly wednesday and also on thursday. What about our temperatures .
