Heres my conversation with gayle king hello, seth, im so glad to be here. Im hanging in there just like everybody is trying to figure out whats what, whats up, whats down, i dont know. Just glad to seth well, were about to return to the studio youve been back in the studio now for a little bit doing cbs this morning. You were doing the show remotely from maybe the best place to do it, which was oprahs house in california seth, take that back. Its called the Santa Barbara bureau thats what its called. The Santa Barbara bureau a. K. A seth gotcha. Guesthouse. Which is a very lovely place so youre right. We had great accommodations. Youll be youll be, not surprised to know shes a lovely host she would bring us food every day. It was wonderful but youll, i know you know this, too. Its great to be back in the studio at the table. You know seth yeah. Number one, i hate delays i still have trouble mastering that and theres something about being able to look at anthony in the face or tony in the face look at the crew i love the crew. I love, love the crew. Seth yeah. So to be able to feed off of that energy is really, really, means a lot to me. So im thrilled to be back in the studio terrified terrified, but thrilled to be back seth im very much looking forward to be surrounded by experts again. I have missed that a great deal. Seth you have done okay you, ive been watching, youve been doing aokay. Youve been doing seth managing. Managing i do want to ask, because i would believe that oprah is indestructible, but she actually took quarantine very seriously from the beginning this girl was not playing around i mean, to her in her defense, because people say, god, she seems a little extra. She goes, really, is it that necessary . She had pneumonia in january she has talked about it. So she still has underlying conditions that shes still very concerned about. So listen, stedman, her partner of 34 years, he had been traveling before it hit. He had been in three airports. He had to quarantine for 14 days. This may sound extra, but sadie, her dog, had to quarantine for 14 days after sadie had gone to the vet. And oprah was watching on the monitor, and the vets mask fell down and so she seth wow she felt that sadie might have been exposed. Sadies fine, but shed seen something on the news that day about dogs could get it. I think i said sadie really is okay. Sadie was Walking Around with a cone head, in quarantine so when i came, i had to quarantine for 14 days, because im not even mad, i get it i get it seth yeah. I follow the rules. Seth and those cones those dog cones are like coronavirus catchers like, theyre the opposite of masks. If it in anyway goes near you it just is like absorbing it, so. Thats so true. Thats so true seth if i could get more serious for a moment, you are the editor at large for the oprah magazine, and you guys made a really, a fascinating, Breonna Taylor on the cover. This is the first time that oprah has not been on the cover of this magazine how did you come to that decision seth, listen, the magazine by the way, is celebrating its 20th anniversary so this was a big, big, big deal shes been on the cover with other people like Michelle Obama, ellen degeneres, rosie odonnell, mehmet oz so shes shared a cover, but i could probably count on less than both hands how many times that happened. Its never been where no one, where she has not been our covergirl but a young editor, deirdre read suggested it and when i first got the message, i thought this is either a really good idea, or this is either really horrible deirdre had just come from a black lives matter protest a young white woman had been at the protest. Was very moved by it and said, you know, i think that we could really do something, that it would send a very strong message. So when i heard it, i thought, mm, and that was sort of all of our reaction we sent it to the o of o who liked it immediately for her it was like, oh, i love this idea. And none of us can take all of us sitting there trying to figure out september covers, deirdre was the only one who spoke up and god bless her, thinking outside the box, sent the idea, and then it was born first thing she did was call call breonnas mom, tamika palmer, to make sure that it was okay. Because we didnt want her to feel we were exploiting it we didnt want to cause her unnecessary pain and she said yes seth you had you put it up on billboards in louisville, which is where breonna lived one of those billboards, i believe just yesterday, was vandalized and then i cant even imagine how you process seeing Something Like that being treated with such disrespect. I know. You know, seth, we put up 26 billboards that we paid for all around the city of louisville, because thats of course where it happened, to honor her and call for what we believe should be justice in theres still so much work to be done thats what it shows you, that like blood i assume in their mind, across her face. Im happy to tell you, tho the Billboard Company went right out there and took it down right away so we were very, very gratified and happy that they did that but it just shows you that, you know, theres still a lot of anger. Theres still a lot of hate. Theres still a lot of distrust in this country. But i dont know how anybody could not be, not want justice listen, you know Breonna Taylors story 26yearsold, an emt who was working on the covid front lines who had no criminal record was not even the police werent even supposed to be in her apartment i mean, its just, its heartbreaking to me that this is still unresolved for this family seth you know where this interesting time which is, you know, we have this upheaval of outrage, of protesting that seems to have calmed down a little bit but it does seem to be at the forefront of politics right now. Youve talked about how these are hard stories to cover, but do you feel like theres a time to be optimistic about change . I do. Seth, i do listen, its very discouraging when you hear the news that you just said about breonnas billboard. When you see people saying out loud and very proud, you know, spewing hatred seth, theres something online right now, an incident in california, where a woman attacked a park worker with, you know, very racist slurs. So i know that its very much alive. But what encourages me is the number of people, black and white, even john lewis said this, the diversity of the people at the protests the age of the people at the protests the age of the people that said this is not okay this is not this is not cool. Things have got to change. So i do feel optimistic and encouraged but it still, i feel that these are very frightening times for all of us, for all of us, black and white. And its this is an issue, by the way, for all of us, too seth you have a weekly radio show yeah. Seth right now as well i dont know where you find the time but i am jealous of the fact that you have callers and i i get the sense that you talk to people, a very wide spectrum of backgrounds in this country. Do you enjoy the back and forth with callers seth, oh, my gosh you know with tv news youre not supposed to have an opinion. Just the facts, nothing but the facts. Its like dragnet. So, listen, im very well aware that nobody watches cbs this morning to hear my friggin opinions i get it but i also know, and my job is to give you the news and let you decide for yourself. I get that so i dont cross that line but i also know that anybody you see anchoring the news, delivering the news, talk show people like yourself we all have opinions we are not robots. So the beauty of what sirius xm they reached out to me and asked me was i interested. I love radio, ive done it before is they want you to engage they i call my favorite listeners. They want you to engage with them and have a good back and forth. I love it when people disagree, because i think that you can disagree without being disagreeable, without being mean and nasty.
