The spare the air alert is in place. Temperatures in the triple digits and also concerned into a wind event and wind gust starting into the start of the work week. Reporter good morning, kris. There is already a flex alert in place. And youre being asked to help conserve power so that they can avoid those rolling outages. Experts say there are several things you can do. First start looking at the unnecessary lighting. You can turn those lights off and any other electrical devices that are unnecessary. Postpone using your major appliances until offpeak hours. Close your blinds and drapes to keep it cooler inside. Switch off your air conditioner and set your thermostat at 78 and use a fan instead. That can be tough because Hardware Stores are telling us theyve had a run on fans both from the heat wave earlier in the summer and also from the wildfires. The demand for fans over the summer has been very high. And the manufacturers havent been able to keep up. So, since they cant keep up, our Warehouse Distribution warehouse doesnt have any for us. So what we have is what you see. Reporter and speaking of the wildfires, this excessive heat will be especially tough on the firefighters, many of whom are still out on the line fighting the fires. They risk both fatigue and dehydration. Now, those peak hours theyre talking about are from 3 00 p. M. Until 9 00 p. M. That starts tomorrow and goes all the way through into monday night. All firefighters are doing all that they can to surround the three bay area wildfires still burning right now. Updated numbers for you. The lnu complex to the north is now 87 contained, expected full containment next week. Also similar numbers for the scu fire, and the czu fire in Santa Cruz Mountains is 51 contained. The Marin Woodward fire is now 71 contained. Some evacuees may not realize though that they may be eligible for assistance from fema to cover emergency evacuation expenses like food and hotel costs. North bay nonprofits are trying to get the word out, especially to people who might already be struggling because of the pandemic. Press democrat reports that the deadline to apply is tomorrow. That deadline is not connected with Property Damage reimbursement. And beaches across the bay area will be very appealing, but they will be off limits for Labor Day Weekend. Health officials are trying to keep large gatherings from happening, which could lead to a spike in cases of coronavirus. Were seeing a lot of beachgoers here in pacifica take advantage of it, but those beaches will be closed starting tomorrow. They already have signs up telling folks that the beaches and parking lots will be closed effective sunrise saturday until sunrise tuesday. It says, wear a mask, avoid crowds. And the point of this is to stop the spread. But these arent the only beaches in the bay area that are putting these measures in place to hopefully stop the spread of the coronavirus with those large gatherings. We sow in Santa Cruz County they are closing down beaches starting tomorrow. And thatll last through monday. But they will open from 4 00 p. M. To 8 00 p. M. On saturday and sunday. Were seeing Monterey County also close its beaches. They will start tonight and end on monday. And point reyes in marin county will be closed, but that is due to the woodward fire. Health officials are cautioning against these large gatherings this Labor Day Weekend. So much of this transmission has taken place through asymptomatic carriers. Wed get a chance to speak to some pacific residents. I think that the county and our city in particular has done a really good job in trying to control that and make decisions that, while they do upset some people because you dont want to sit in the car for a while and then get to the beach and find out you cant go. And i totally understand that frustration. Its the end of summer. Everybody wants to celebrate and also acknowledge that were trying to get back to some kind of normal. Yeah, a little. But i can also understand that everybodys been locked for such a long time. They need to get out. And theyve come through pretty steadily all morning long, customers here at the fusion 3 salon. I talked to one Alameda County salon owner just a couple of days ago when this announcement was made. He told me he was down to his last 300, was considering going out of fusion 3 in business here for more than 20 years right on main street, and they were considering racking up a bill of more than 300,000 in debt to try to pay for reopening costs and to cover employee expenses, wages and benefits while they were shut down. So, they are really breathing a sigh of relief. Very happy to be open, getting the word from the county Health Officials just a few days ago they could reopen this morning. The first client already here for a color at 6 30 while we were live inside the salon this morning. Guests and employees wore masks, and the stylists also wore face shields. Theres also plexiglass shields between each station installed by the owners back in may. Theyve been looking forward to this day for months along with their customers. Ive been emailing out all the instructions and protocols to our guests. And then we have a selfcertification lest th selfcertification list that the guest is going to do before they come in, temperature checks. Its a really, really safe place and the guests feel very comfortable. Not just a haircut or a service that we provide. We see people every five weeks and its, how is your family, how was that vacation . Weve known many of our guests for over a decade, and its a pretty special connection that we have. We may be seeing a bit of goose from the number of census workers, government jobs account for a quarter of all the jobs that were seeing. Dow industrials down about 315 points. This is on top of the big losses we saw yesterday. Dow fell 800 points. The nasdaq downso this is very the economy. We do see obviously the slowdown, kris, still of course. But this is one of the very first numbers weve gotten after the end of some of those bonus payments, the 600 as well. And we seem to be limping along fairly well. There are growing protests in rochester where seven Police Officers are suspended after restraining a black man who lar march, but its getting new scrutiny after the mans family released video of that encounter. Reporter overnight intense protests from rochester, new york, to new york city where a car drove into demonstrators in times square. Protesters in both cities demanding justice for daniel prude, the 41yearold died in march seven days after he was restrained by Rochester Police. This is very personal to me. Reporter on thursday the mayor of rochester suspending with pay seven officers involved in the arrest. We cannot continue to fail black lives this way. Reporter prudes case coming to light after his familys attorney and black lives matter activists released body how do you want your brother to be remembered . Like a human being, not a piece of meat. Reporter he called 911 fearing his brother was having a mental breakdown. In the video prude is seen naked in the middle of a snowy street following police orders. An officer places a spit hood over his head because they say prude told him he had covid19. Prude can be heard repeatedly asking police for a gun before Officers Press his face into the ground for two minutes. Youre trying to kill me reporter prude eventually goes limp. A First Responder says hes unable to find a pulse. Prude died a week later after being taken off life support. In an autopsy report provided by the prude familys attorney, the medical examiner says prudes death was caused by complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint, d acute pcp intoxication. The Rochester Police chief declined to comment. The state attorney general who was in charge of the case before the video was released says they are working diligently to ensure a swift but thorough investigation. What do you hope will happen next . That they get prosecuted for this. If they had the right to kill him, they got the right to be prosecuted. That was kathy park reporting. The police union is not commenting on those officers suspensions. New yorks Governor Andrew Cuomo called the video deeply disturbing and is asking that the case be concluded as expeditionly as possible. Those are his words. Authorities say Michael Forest reinoehl threatened officers with a gun as they tried to arrest him. They claimed he fired his gun in selfdefense. The controversy over Speaker Nancy Pelosis blowout at a San Francisco salon is not blowing over. And just last night President Trump chimed in at a Campaign Stop in pennsylvania. She mustve treated that beauty salon pretty badly. She uses the salon and the salon turned her in . Pelosis stylist, who does not own the salon, is siding with the speaker saying through his attorney that salon owner k clients in violation of health orders. Keyes defended herself mostly reading a prepared statement. I just wanted all stylists including jonathan to be able to work and all salons including mine. She said since she turned that video over to fox news shes gotten angry Online Reviews and texts. Speaker pelosi is demanding an apology. It is a race against time for rescue teams in beirut. A month after the explosion, they detected signs of life in that rubble. Possibly two warm and breathing bodies. People on the ground say one reading taken today indicated no signs of life. Theres a micro climate weather alert in effect for this reason. This is sort of in anticipation for the heat wave that were going to encounter. And i want to make sure you are all ready. San jose looks a little hazy. We had that morning fog around the coast line. And were going to see a lot of that burnoff and were going to get plenty of sunshine. Were still pretty comfortable in the 60s. Weve got some low 70s in through concord. But that air quality is still very much an issue. Weve got drifting smoke and the spare the air alert remains in place through tomorrow. Weve got unhealthy air quality to the north bay, the bay and coast and also the south bay and east bay. Were going to be in the upper 70s for san jose, morgan hill 86 in through oakland 72. Concord, walnut creek and danville will be in those upper 80s. By tomorrow those areas will be seeing tripledigit heat. Its sort of our last day before we really start to see that heat crank up. 76 degrees in redwood city. San mateo 73. Weve got this little bit of a breeze in San Francisco. Temperatures at about 70 degrees up through the north bay. 93, ukiah. 94 in clear lake. Really, really dry conditions. Humidity is going to fall less than 30, 20 in some spots this weekend. And that excessive heat watch was upgraded to an excessive heat warning because of the nearrecord temps that were expecting, this begins at 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Not only are inland areas going to be seeing triple digit heat, but bayside areas are going to see temperatures in the 80s and 90s. And there is going to be the potential for a wind event on monday and tuesday with some offshore winds expected. Thats going to really keep us on edge. Because any time we see low humidity, hot temperatures and strong, gusty conditions, it brings elevated fire danger, especially right now with everything that we have going on and all the current wildfires burning. Dangerous heat on sunday. Potentially one of our hottest days this week. Labor day the triple digits will continue. And again were going to be monitoring it for those windy conditions headed into monday and tuesday. Current temperatures for San Francisco will be in the 70s for tomorrow. And then theyre going to go up by as much as 20 degrees by sunday. 86 degrees. We stay in those upper 70s even for San Francisco. And we dont really get much relief from the heat even after the triple digits roll away. By wednesday and thursday well start to cool off just a little bit.
