In a statement with his attorney, he sided with pelosi saying erica kios also broke the rules, stielting various clients hair, ignoring social distancing guidelines and not wearing protective equipment as recently as a few days prior to pelosis arriv arrival. Pelosi has called for an apology. When they said were able to accommodate people one person at a time and that we can set up that time, i trusted that. As it turns out, it was a setup. Reporter defund sfpd now wants city leaders to reduce the size of the force and drastically cut into the departments 700 million budget. Tonight making the message permanent, painting defund sfpd in yellow paint in front of the station as officers in riot gear monitored the peaceful protest. Reporter organizers say with so many people in the nation paying attention to Police Violence, now is the time to call on lawmakers to create real change. New at 11 00 tonight, the city of san jose will not be pursuing charges against people arrested for breaking curfew during the protest. Following the death of george floyd, protesters hit the streets. The city then enacted an 8 30 p. M. Curfew. Over the course of four nights, officers arrested dozens of demonstrators for violating that curfew. The acting City Attorney said a 1993 court case regarding a curfew ordered during the rodney king riots in l. A. Put the legal at of the arrests made for san jose curfew violations into question. Get ready for it to get hot. Temperatures will be soaring again, and that means another strain on our power grid. Cal iso has already issued a statewide flex alert for saturday, sunday, and monday. And were all being asked to conserve energy from 3 00 in the afternoon till 9 00 p. M. State regulators say we should get ready because there could be outages. So how hot is it going to get . Lets bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Jeff, were talking about over 100 degrees in some spots. You are exactly right. 110 degrees could even occur here for some of the interior valleys, so we are looking at a heat wave. Right now im thinking at this point that would last for four days. So what were tracking right now in this area of hot High Pressure. This really kicks into high gear as we hit saturdays forecast, and its not only going to bring the heat for us but the entire state of california. Look at this closeup view here. All of those areas in that pink color, thats under the excessive heat warning as we head through Labor Day Weekend. The only part thats not included in that is some of the coastline and the sierra. So what does this mean for us . Well, you can see were looking at maximum heat inland that could reach 110 degrees. San francisco and the coast, 70s to 80s. It will bring back more fire danger, low humidity, maybe even more of those Power Outages not only from the grid and the stress on the power grid, but potentially from some wind. Im tracking that wind for next tuesday. Well have more details on that. Ill give you a check of the air quality and show you which day is the hottest. Ill have that in about 15 minutes. Thank you, jeff. Rising temps will make things tough for fire crews still hard at work in the santa cruz mountains. This is new video from cal fire tonight. Helicopter crews returning from a long day of putting out hot spots on the czu complex fire. We still have some active fire that were patrolling within the fire perimeter. So with the increasing heat, the decrease in humidity, those fires can get bigger. So, you know, were going to be actively patrolling that. Firefighter fatigue and dehydration also a concern in the coming days. Crews are making progress on the fire lines. The czu complex fire is 51 contained. The scu complex fire in the south bay and east bay now 80 contained. In the north bay, crews hope to fully contain the lnu fire by next week and theyre getting close tonight because containment is at 81 . In marin county, the woodward fire is at 71 containment. It is a sign of progress for months long covid closures from restaurants to casinos to hair salons, people are getting back to business across the bay area. Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd takes us on a reopening tour that starts in napa county. Reporter on monday, napa Restaurant Owners got the goahead to start letting their customers eat inside. Theyre doing it but with a lot of safeguards in mind. Take a look at our staff. Theyre all wearing gloves. They change their gloves probably 50 times a day. Because of that, im confident were doing whats right. In the east bay, Alameda County hair salons are getting a break after the covid crisis shut the industry down for six months straight. Opening day is friday. Salon owner brian tran cant wait. Bay area people we spoke to tonight are feeling optimistic, saying this covid crisis is taking a turn and moving in the right direction. In napa, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. As you just heard cheryl mention, Alameda County hair salons and barbershops can move indoors tomorrow. That means San Francisco will be the only bay area county keeping hairstylists and barbers outside. From online to in person, marin county has approved waivers for 15 schools. Some of them are private, some are public. All are elementary schools. Theyve been cleared to open as early as tuesday because the county says local covid19 case numbers are improving. And on the peninsula, menlo park sin app school showing off its new outdoor classrooms. You can see tents, seats, tables all outside. Synapse is a private school which will welcome back to some 200 students later this month. Administrators did a lot of research, they said to get the waiver and to make this happen. What we know is that the virus isnt very effective at spreading outside. So what weve done at synapse is to move most of the classes outside and then even inside to make sure theres large air volume. The school even went as far as to remove some walls and reconfigure indoor spaces to improve air flow and social distancing. Well, ahead, some parents argued it was racist and sexist. The issue of Police Violence front and center in the race for the white house. Mr. Biden visited kenosha, wisconsin, today. He started his day in milwaukee, where he met with jacob blakes family behind closed doors. Biden also spoke on the phone with blake who is still in the hospital. Officers shot blake seven times in the back, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Think about how nothing was going to defeat him. How whether he walked again or not, he was not going to give up. Afterwards biden traveled to kenosha where he participated in a socially distant Community Meeting you see there. President trump visited kenosha earlier this week but did not meet with the blake family. Not the lesson they were expecting. Some parents in the east bay say an Online Learning program provided by the alameda School District included racist and sexist material. The district has since dropped that program. Nbc bay areas melissa colorado spoke to a parent who says the schools should have known better. Acell us is the learning accelerator that is being called a gamechanger. Reporter it was the Online Learning program that the alameda unified School District handpicked for Remote Learning students to use in the fall. In a letter addressed to pare s parents, the districts superintendent says the district was already using asell us accelerator for High School Students who thought it would be a perfect for everyone else. But by late summer, Jennifer Ekman says what she found raised some alarms. There were examples of racism, of sexism. There was religious material that was being taught as fact. Reporter ekman has two children enrolled at patten elementary school. She was stunned when she found social media posts from other parents across the country who claimed the program posed implicitly racist questions. And it was asking what is a family . And it showed an africanamerican woman and her child, and then a white couple and their child, and the correct answer was the white couple. Reporter ekman joined hundreds of other alameda parents who signed this change. Org petition, urging the district to scrap acellus. We bought a home here so we could come and send our kids to these schools and then have them roll out Something Like that, its very disappointing. Reporter on monday, the district decided to cut ties. In a letter to parents, the superintendent wrote, as a district, we do not condone such content and absolutely do not want to be a vehicle for presenting such content to students. Now the District Needs to pick another Remote Learning platform. Once the decision is made, the district says it will take two weeks to train teachers. Ekman says it was a lesson for the district and one for her kids as well. I did show my children the material. I want my children to be aware of what is appropriate and what is not appropriate. Reporter we reached out to acellus but did not reach anyone who could comment. A los gatos teacher is accused of inappropriate behavior offer a zoom meeting with a couple of students. Police arrested joseph howe. Two teenage boys told investigators howe made them uncomfortable. They also said he had child porn on his tronic storage devices. Hes the director of the los gatos youth theater. Avoid gatherings. That is a message Santa Clara County wants you to hear this labor day. At a News Conference today, Health Officers say they saw a spike in coronavirus cases after memorial day weekend and july 4th. This holiday weekend, social distancing, they say, is key. They say if youre going to gather, limit the size and stay outdoors. Often when people have gatherings, people congregate inside in the kitchen to help with food preparation and drinks and that kind of activity. And we would really ask that only the host be in the kitchen, that guests do not help food pr Health Officers also recommend you avoid going to places that might be crowded. Now, that whole going outside, staying outside thing is going to be a little challenging this weekend, jeff, because in some places its going to be over 100 degrees. It really is going to be so, so challenging, especially if you dont have airconditioning. Really everybody is going to be impacted by these hot, hot temperatures. I want to bring things first into the air quality. We have had this on and off smoke. Its started to get better in some respects this week, but i still think tomorrow well continue to see smoke through the bay area. The north b for tomorrow morning, we keep that cool breeze with us. Some fog and some of that haze mixed in. 59 in the south. Trivalley at 62. East bay, 60. 54 in San Francisco with that fog and a little bit of drizzle. For the north bay, 57. Temperatures tomorrow begin to warm up about three to six degrees in my forecast, but not quite uncomfortable just yet. Down in the south bay it will put us at 79 in san jose and 80 in milpitas. For the east bay, go near the bay. Its not too hot either. Were staying in the 70s. Then inland, max temperature, 91 in antioch. The peninsula, 70s. As you get to daly city, we start to drop off to the 60s. More of those 60s coming our way for San Francisco tomorrow except for the mission, which will be at 70 degrees. So starting to see some of that warmup. And for the inland valleys, were beginning to see temperatures hotter in clearlake, 94. Napa 83. Things are really going to crank up once we hit saturday, and its for one main reason. We are tracking this area of High Pressure and where that area of High Pressure goes, the hottest air also goes with it. So with High Pressure sitting over the west, the circulation around this is going to pump up this heat across the state. So much so that we have this excessive heat warning in effect from Northern California all the way down towards san diego. So in my temperatures, you can see in San Francisco, puts us up to 86 on sunday, and we keep 70s for a good part of next week. And for the inland valleys, were going up to 100 on saturday. Ive bumped these temperatures up. 108 on sunday. 102 on labor day. 100 next tuesday with potentially some dry wind gusts. Lets take a quick closer look at sundays temperatures, and you can see concord likely could be one of our hottest. Im forecasting 108. The record, 102 degrees. So jessica, if you have to be outside, you know, some people may feel dumb doing it, but you can get a towel, get it wet, put it in the freezer.
