With doing just that. So far weve had about a dozen speakers really speaking from the heart not only about the difficulties of doing their job outside but also how important it is that they get to do their job back inside. Now, as a reminder, today in this county, San Francisco hair salons and barbershops, nail salons and massage parlors are all able to open but only outdoors. Now with the small victory of being able to open outdoors comes with some challenges. Today they discussed the challenges of opening in a small space inside of a city. Many of them are in a highrise and dont even have the space to open. The cost of trying to retrofit their salons for the outdoors and the fact that they still need their rent paid and being outside really limits the number of folks that can do their job. For one barber in the city that i spoke with, the process of waiting and being unsure of whats next is really frustrating. Take a listen to what that barber has to say, keeping in mind that he opened his job just one month before that shelterinplace order went into effect. I want the mayor and the governor to know that barbers have been essential. We had to go to school for 1,500 hours about sanitation. Im sure that other people didnt have to do any of that. Reporter now todays event was organized by the bay area group, bay area barber brother. That individual is a member of that group. That group was started to help with benefits for stylists. But now outside in their shop. And it sounds like theyre starting to wrap up. This began a little after 10 15. More than a dozen very, very passionate stylists and aestheticians taking to those steps to discuss why they need to be inside and be classified as essential workers. It is important to note that this county is not the only one thats been able to open outdoors. Alameda county was able to begin their styling outdoors yesterday. And yesterday in Contra Costa County they were able to do so inside. So a lot of folks really passionate about what theyre doing. Now theyre walking across the street to city hall to continue that message. Were live in downtown San Francisco, Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. A lot of Small Businesses struggling, wanting to be heard. Thank you. Lets take a look outside for you. Another day around the bay with bad air quality. Another spare the air alert called f a row. So, be careful when youre out there. Meteorologist kari hall tracking the weather for us. Certainly for not a great day for anyone who has upper respiratory problems. Absolutely not. And you do want to make sure youre limiting your time outside even though the temperatures feel nice, this air quality is no joke. Were still looking at unhealthy air quality all across the bay area. And so this light northerly wind continues to bring in that smoke and then the High Pressure just pushes it down towards the surface. It is not being mixed up right now. So even as we look outside in dublin, we can see the smokey conditions that are going on still. And as we go into the rest of today, were going to see our temperatures reaching into the mid80s. Once again, weather not too bad, especially compared to the heat weve had recently as we look at our High Temperatures in the south bay were up to 84 degrees. While were up to 83 today in napa. And there will be some low 90s in the inland east bay but some upper 60s for San Francisco. Well talk about why this air just wont mix out and why weve had the spare the air alert for so long and whats ahead in the forecast as we go into the long holiday weekend. Thats coming up in a few minutes. Looking forward to it, kari, thank you. Firefighters are making new ground tackling bay area wildfires. Nbc bay areas bob redell is joining us from lions wayside park. Why is the city considering cutting this down . Reporter frankly because its sick. You can see some of those residents here are referring to and standing in front of the tree here. Were here in downtown pleasanton. Thats a blue tasmanian eucalyptus. Its got a ginormous trunk. Its at least 150 years old of the large yes ast and the oldes the city of pleasanton. It looks to be in perfect health. But what you cant see is an incurable sulfur fungus that has spread inside the trunk and the branches that have weakened the tree. Yesterday the city announced that the tree poses a threat to the community and that today a tree trimming crew would begin to take it down. That crew has not yet arrived. The city tells us that a fairly large branch recently fell down from the tree. Thats when they realized the tree was sick and had to go. I have heard that. I have never seen that branch that came down. And even so, trees lose branches, as we know. What you do to take care of that is you thin them down. You dont cut the entire tree down merely branch. Its like the statue of liberty. We can see it from our home. And its been here ever since we came to town 60 years ago. And its beautiful, theres nothing wrong with it. They just are trying to sneak it through the council and the city. And everybody else has to go tr down orerday. We dont want the tree to come down either. It saddens us. If it werent for the fungus in the tree, we wouldnt be removing it. Reporter the last person you heard from was the information officer. The city says thats not so and that they did provide proper Public Notice with the announcement that they put out yesterday. Now, we have been expecting this tree trimming crew to be out here for the past hours. Dont know why theyre not here yet. But the city says they will be here. And this tree is so big, they expect itll take until friday to take it all the way down. The city will salvage parts of that tree and put it on display at the avico Community Park which is not too far from here. Its really sad to see so many people upset. But of course tough one out there. All right, thanks, bob. Well, coming up for you, Robin Williams death shocked everyone. Now we are learning new details surrounding his private struggle. Back here in the bay area getting a look at that forecast today and not necessarily something to smile about, but air quality is a little bit smile about. And we will have some improvement over the next couple of days. So the spare the air alert, expected to discontinue after today after 15 days straight. And this is what the scenes have looked like. A very hazy conditions and we know that if you have breathing problems or if you are sick, if you have covid19, this could really bother you at this point as we are looking at our temperatures that are going to be in the low 70s and then reaching into the low 80s for the afternoon. So even though it feels pretty nice outside, we are time out there. Lets go through all of our micro climates as well see in cupertino, temperatures reaching 87 today. And were in the upper 80s as well in the south county with morgue yap hill reaching 87. For the east bay, were up to 97. Hayward reaching 79 degrees. Were in the upper 60s for parts of the peninsula and 80 degrees in palo alto for that High Temperature today. Going into San Francisco, the Marina District will reach up to 62 degrees, and the north bay High Temperatures will reach as high as 97 in ukiah. Were up to 79 degrees in santa rosa. Well continue to monitor the air quality over the next seven days. But we should see a little bit of some improvement as we get more of a westerly wind, that brings in some fresher ocean air into the bay area. But then as that air becomes more stagnant, well, unfortunately it looks like we go back to that moderate air quality. So whats keeping all of this very bad air trapped . Well, for one we still have the fires burning. And then on top of that we have High Pressure thats causing that air to sink. And with that light wind it basically creates a cap over the bay area. And then during those Early Morning hours we have cooler temperatures, and so that also causes the air to sink close to the surface. And so it basically traps the smoke. Weve seen some of the worst air quality in San Francisco, especially when we have that fog. So thats whats going on in the atmosphere. And once again those fires do continue to burn even though they are getting some more containment and hopefully that will continue over the next couple of days. As we look at our forecast and whats ahead, going through the next seven days, this is really going to be critical because we have a few more days of weather like this with some cooler temperatures, but then look at how hot its going to be going into the Labor Day Holiday weekend. We are going to see those temperatures jump up for the inland areas on saturday and basically peak on sunday. And were also going to have that warmer weather moving into San Francisco as well.
