Layer. Fog around the coastline and limited visibility through San Francisco, san carlos, santa cruz as well, down to about three miles in San Francisco. Current temperatures right now in the 50s and 60s. Oakland 60 degrees right now. Half moon bay 54 and here it is, this is what were monitoring closely. So from the north bay down to the coast were still dealing with some unhealthy quality. Now, as far as the moderate air quality along with the coast and the beaches, keep in mind that there is a spare the air alert thats in place, that was extended all the way through sunday, and were going to continue to see how this storm shapes out. Depending on the fire containment we could see the air quality improve or worsen especially with the winds kicking up later this afternoon. Kira, back to you. Well see you in about 15, vianey, thanks. It was a peaceful protest and then it turned hostile. San jose demonstrators marching as part of a national day of action calling for racial equality, ending at the home of san jose mayor sam liccardo. One of them as you see in this video breaking off from the group and spray painting profanity on the front of the mayors home. Officers arrived quickly to the scene. Mayor liccardo was just arriving home from being with family. No word this morning on any arrests. But then we saw this overnight, about two dozen neighbors pitched in to help clean the graffiti. Mayor liccardo tells us he was comforted by how his community helped him. We just come to realize this is part of the job. The reality is, theres a lot of folks who are suffering. In real ways right now. And this is nothing compared to what a lot of people are going through in the community right now. This vandalism follows a peaceful march in downtown san jose, the video at west santa clara and market streets, protesters in the middle of road alongside cars carrying signs, the same thing in oakland where hundreds of people gathered together to demand social change, but officers turned out in force and tactical gear, firing flash bangs to disperse the crowds. This along broadway at 24th. At least one person was arrested for pointing a laser at officers. Oakland remembers oscar grant and we know that to fight for justice for Police Brutality and against racism, we have to stay in the streets and we have to take matters into our own hands. And protesters and demonstrators turned out across the country yesterday afternoon, this was the turnout on the National Mall in washington, d. C. On the 57th anniversary of the march on washington, and Martin Luther king jr. s i have a dream speech, now nearly six decades later still the same fight for civil and economic rights of africanamerican people. Yesterdays demonstration taking on a renewed urg generalsy after the shooting of jacob blake in kenosha, wisconsin. His father was in d. C. Every black person in the United States is going to stand up. Were tired. Jacob blake remains in the hospital paralyzed from being shot several times in the back. He is no longer cuff today his hospital bed but he is being guarded. Police say he remains in custody on an outstanding warrant for sexual assault. The same thing as we heard last weekend, stay away from the coast. Fire crews are sending this message to potential visitors. And in better news today is the day we hope you will join us as we work to clear the shelters. In just a few minutes we will have laura garcia and Marcus Washington reporting live to kick off the event. Welcome back to you, all this month weve worked with animal shelters across the bay area to find forever homes for pets virtually, of course, because of covid19. And this weekend is the main event. Laura garcia is live for us this morning at pets in need in palo alto and Marcus Washington is live at berkeley humane. Lets start things off with laura in palo alto. Great to see both of you this morning. Reporter its great to be out of the box a little bit in some fresh air, were all dealing with this pandemic right now so clearing the shelters is taking on a different look this year but its still happening. Its been happening for the entire month of august. As you mentioned im here at pets in need in palo alto where theyre still offering great adoptions. They have dogs available, cute little kittens and cats. What you do this year is its all virtual. You log onto the website, check out all the cute little cuddly friend that you may want to take home and set up a virtual interview. Its great. There have been over a thousand animals already adopted throughout the bay area, 55,000 has also been raised. Theyve been fostering out a lot of these animals during this quarantine, which has really been a great thing and now you can take home a forever friend as well. Theres also some great events that are going on out here today. Theyve got members of the palo alto track team and theyve set up kind of a fundraiser where you can come and walk the bay. Make a donation and all that money is going to pets in need which is great. Theyve got to have a lot of services as theyve got to keep up with immunizations with the animals, spaying and neutering as well. Theyve got some fun giveaways out here in a little bit were going to go inside and show you some of the kittens and the pups and everybody available out here. But, you know, if you get a chance you can come out, maybe register to do the little run that theyre going to have, make a donation there. You can also log on to find a virtual friend. So thats whats happening in palo alto. In the meantime marcus is over in berkeley. Whats going on there . Oh, you know what, laura, theyre getting set up, getting ready for an amazing day. Of course things are different now because of the pandemic but that doesnt stop a lot of people connecting with some of their forever friends. I want you to take a look at the friends we have behind us here. So i know youre used to seeing marcus, kari and laura in the morning. How about this . This is marcus there in the blue, laura there in the orange no, laura here and then kari in the back there. You can take these three home with you. They are so cute. Theyve been in having a good time and having fun this morning. So adoption here, starts at 10 00 this morning. But if you already have a pet and we know a lot of people having a hard time getting in to see the vets right now, well, they have a vaccination area over there and any service that you get there starting at 9 00 this morning you get a chip in your pet for free so thats all a part of it. So theyre still trying to make this all a big family loving event, of course if you come out here theres going to be social distancing. But still an opportunity for you to connect with that forever friend. So look, a lot of people are looking for pets to bring home right now because we are socially distancing, isolated in our homes, a lot of people so now to kind of bring another person to the family. Its going to be a fun event. A little different this year but certainly a fun event and we want everyone to be a part of that. Laura explained to you what you can do, go online and find a forever pet but you can come out here to berkeley humane to find a forever kitten. Its a fun event, you guys, i wish we all could be together. But still the fun must continue. We miss you, i miss seeing you in person, marcus, but its good to know i can go to berkeley and adopt Marcus Washington if i want to take you home with me and if anyone wants to take home kira clapper the kitten, shes at pets in need in redwood city. Marcus, see you again in a little bit. Thank you so much. We have much more ahead on today in the bay, coming up a renewed message from firefighters to anyone thinking about heading to the coast this weekend. A beautiful glow over san jose as the sunrises but we know its not a good thing as we deal with poor air quality for the second weekend in a row because of all these wildfires. Vianey arana will be along in just a minute with your microclimate forecast. They were evacuated from their homes because of the czu wildfire and now thousands of people have been lucky enough to wake up this weekend back in their homes this as thousands of other people remain in temporary shelters or hotels. Today in the bay, sergio quintano reports. Reporter many will find a few problems along the way like downed power lines and even potentially compromised water systems. Fire commanders gave a list of items to be careful about. The propane tanks you might have had, items that may be hazardous or might have fallen. What you should touch and what you should engage with. Reporter as many get to return home others remain evacuated. Everyones going through their hardships of knowing what to do next, going day by day, figuring out how long its going to be because were not sure what exact day we can return. Reporter her home survive it had fire but her neighborhood remains evacuated. She stopped by the ocean lodge in santa cruz to visit some friends who are also still evacuated. Hotel operators tell me theyve been packed by evacuees over the last week and as some checked out tourists are already checking in for the long holiday weekend. County Officials Say that could be a problem. If you dont need to be in Santa Cruz County please do not come here. Ive mentioned that before. Because what youre doing is youre just tying up finite resources for folks to be able to stay. Reporter 40,000 people are still under evacuation orders and with 575 homes destroyed many are now homeless. In scotts valley, sergio quintana, abc news. We have more fires to cover than just the czu, we bring in vianey arana for a look at the microclimate forecast, so much going on across the bay area and you are also focusing on the air quality. Thats right, kira, thats the reason why we are under a microclimate weather alert. Normally when we issue these were either tracking rain or storms but the air quality is just as important, especially because weve still got, as you said, a number of wildfires burning, a lot of them as a direct result of that dry lightning event we saw a couple weeks back. Heres what it looks like in San Francisco. No, the camera is not broken. That is dense fog. Weve got that marine layer around the coastline. You cant even see whats supposed to a view of the city. 56 degrees right now in San Francisco. Overall were seeing that coastline really, you know, starting to show with that fog, weve got San Francisco down to about three miles in terms of that visibility. Santa cruz also seeing that fog. And heres how were looking when it comes to those temperatures right now. 60 degrees and 59 is the overall temperature trend across the bay area. But that air quality today we do remain under a microclimate weather alert and that will be in place, it was extended through tomorrow. Now this, of course, is a changing situation depending on how much of a hold they managed to get on these fires. Weve got a shift in the winds coming this afternoon. The north bay, the bay, the east bay and the south bay all feeling unhealthy air quality. Along the coast and the beaches is still moderate but again you shouldnt even be going to the beaches regardless. The hazy skies, youll see that throughout the morning. As far as the hour by hour outlook notice what happens to the coastline. We keep the cloud cover and as i mentioned were going to get sort of an onshore flow, live winds picking up from the north, northwest and todays forecast will be slightly cooler, just a little bit. But still pretty warm in inland areas. So around San Francisco and Half Moon Bay expect those 60s down through san jose, 84, morgan hill 87 and then areas like concord and antioch still in upper 80s, low 90s through clear lake as well. Lets talk about those winds, again anytime we see fires we dont want to see the winds, but the winds are going to remain overall fairly just breezy with a max wind speed of about 15 Miles Per Hour at some of the higher hill tops. Heres what were looking at here, san jose. This is around 2 30 in through the afternoon so this will actually help clear out some of that smoke. But then again, depending on the grasp that they have on those fires well probably see, you know, sort of a change in that pattern as we see that High Pressure begin to move in from the west northwest and as the pressure system starts to take over the bay area we see it sit on top of the bay area, anytime you get High Pressure we dry out and we warm back up so the temperatures in San Francisco will be in the 60s this weekend. Notice what happens into monday, tuesday and wednesday with the arrival of that High Pressure system. We warm back up into the 70s for San Francisco and then we go into the upper 90s for inland areas. So thats wheat were going to start to see. Kira, back to you. Vianey, thanks so much. It is 7 21 right now and still ahead on today in the bay, governor gavin knewsonewsom rel new guidelines. Elation for some salons and barbrbershops a and confusision others. Well explplain next. Where can back, governor gavin newsom introduced a new tier system replacing the states covid19 watch list. Thousands of Business Owners are scrambling once again to review and understand the new rules. Heres a breakdown of how it works. Each county is assigned to one of four tiers. Theyre based on two things, the rate of new cases and positivity. You can see on this map the dark purple is the most restrictive tier with the exception of San Francisco and napa the entire bay area falls under that tier. Today in the bays jean elle explores what this means . Its been unbelievably difficult to live with the amount of uncertainty and then just the rapid changes and also not knowing if those changes from one source are actually true. Reporter the owners of salon revel have doing their best to adjust to changing covid19 guidelines. Like some other bay area counties they are allowed to work outside. When governor gavin newsom unveiled a new tiered system for reopening businesses he was using fresno as an example when he said hair salons could reopen inside. As an example hair salons and barbershops can be reopened. Reporter salon revel clients heard those words and wanted an appointment. Everyones emailing, texting and wanting to get back in. Reporter newsom went on to say its up to county Health Officers to make the decision. One was hearing from stylists looking for clarification. Is there confused, should we stay outside or go inside . Reporter around 6 00 San Mateo County announced on social media salons can open for Indoor Services on monday. We caught up with salon revel. We had to put our salon back in order indoors to everythings nice, get the cleaners to come. Just a list. So lots and lots of work to do but very excited. Reporter most salons are closed on mondays but shes ready for a big day at work back inside. Were so happy, thank you so much. And this little one gets to eat because of that, huh . Reporter jean elle, nbc bay area news. Heres a look at the bay areas biggest county, santa clara county, in the widespread tier again because of the high case rate, contra costa the same tier, high case rate. 10. 8 new cases per 100,000 people. We did mention that San Francisco and napa are the only two counties not in the widespread tier. This is the breakdown for the city. You can see its doing okay if we only look at the positivity rate, 3. 4 . But because the new tiers also add in the case rate the high number of 9. 8 per 100,000 puts the city in the current tier. San francisco is giving the green light for outdoor salons to open but now there is some confusion because of the governors announcement yesterday. Mayor london breed says the city is prioritizing examining the new tier system and will implement city regulations as needed. So what is open . What remains closed . Its getting very confusing with all of these changes so were working to do that for all of you. Go to our website, nbcbayarea. Com, check out our coronavirus blog. I guess we should be used to it by now but its still hard to see. Thank you so much for joining us. Im kira klapper. Vianey arana joins us now with a look at your microclimate forecast as we remain under a microclimate weather alert because of the air quality and everything were experiencing from these fires. Hey, vianey. Hey there, unfortunately we are still under a spare the air alert and that is expected to remain in place through tomorrow. It was extended but right now we are seeing the coast with that fog that marine layer, especially in San Francisco. I mean, this camera you can barely make out the city behind it because of the fog its about 56 degrees right now, further inland you can see san jose, waking up to about 55 degrees. We will be seeing those hazy skies yet again today. We do have a little bit of an onshore wind kicking up this afternoon but here is where we stand for todays air quality forecast. The north bay, 124, remains unhealthy, all the way down through the south bay. Now keep in mind this is all done based on a scale on airnowgov. It changes progressively throughout the day. See the Current Conditions now versus todays forecast. I will have a closer look at that and what to expect. Back to you. Well see you in about 15, vianey. Thanks so much. To a peaceful protest that turned hostile, san jose demonstrators marching as part of a national day of action calling for racial equality. All this month weve been working at animal shelters across the bay area to virtually find forever homes for pets of course because of the pandemic but today is the main event. Today in the bays laura garcia is live for us this morning at pets in need in palo alto and Marcus Washington is live at berkeley humane. This time were going to start with marcus. Take it away, sir. Well, look, i can tell you, this is the place to be. But of course everythings a little different this year because of the pandemic but of course a lot has been going on and the people in the bay area have already been very active right now. Already bay area pet adoptions, 1,658. A lot of people accestepping up the plate to provide forever home for pets. The Adoption Center where i am right now starts at 10 00. But the Veterinarian Services around the corner here starts at 9 00. I can tell you people are already showing up so it really shows the need that were seeing throughout the bay area from people finding those forever homes or people also providing care to the pets they already have. So joining us this morning is the executive director here at the bay area east bay humane society. Thanks so much for joining us. How did you describe this event when i first walked up this morning . I said great to see you, marcus, this is our third year, i think doing this and were so happy youre here but its very similar to last year except everything is completely different. So were so happy to be pet adoptions again and we know not only are you one of the nicest guys on television, we know youre also one of the a huge animal lover which is why we named a kitten after you this year so well be doing adoptions outside this year, a little different than past years and were also hosting a lowcost vaccine clinic. Thats so important because its been difficult for people who have animals to get in to see their veterinarian lately. If you come down to berkeley humane were doing lowcost vaccinations and free microchiping with every service provided. Come and adopt or get a wellness for every animal you have. A lot of services and youre saying people can go online and make donations to help a lot of people. Its all about the website. Go to the website and you can see the animals that are available, the spay neuter the Vaccination Services that were offering and also, you know, covid19 has had a really huge impact on our ability to fund raise. Any donations would be great, really appreciated, thats berkeley humane. Org. Of course its kind of lonely out here, used to having laura by my side. Shes getting the work done over in palo alto this morning. Hows it going over there . Oh, double trouble over here. You would have two laura garcias, this is my name sake available at pets in need, one of the many cute cuddly kittens they have available for adoption. Joining me this morning is the executive director. This year is a little bit different but still making it work. Still making it work. Weve adjusted our adoption schedule. Weve adjusted our cleaning schedule and, you know, trying to make sure were aware of the social distancing issues. But we also have a responsibility to try to get as many animals adopted as possible. Weve made those adjustments. And its kitten season. Its kitten season. You see behind us a full rack of kittens. Its the busiest time of year for us. It expands from year to year, but this is the heart of the kitten season. Yeah, exactly. Which means, though, that really theres a particular color you want, maybe a little fur, more than others, theres one really available for everyone out here. So what you do is just log on virtually. You can set up an appointment, which is fantastic, and, you know, you need a little kitten, maybe theres a guinea pig out here, puppies as well. Whatever it would take to maybe take one home. Well see you in a bit. Sports is next. Want resestaurants t to open . And d schools . Want t the economymy to get back on n track . Yoyoure notot alone. And d you can hehelp make it hapappen. It was Jackie Robinson day across Major League Baseball yesterday, the as were in houston against the astros last night with a powerful moment on the field. Both teams coming out for 42 seconds to honor the memory of Jackie Robinson who, of course, broke baseballs color barrier. Robinson wore number 42. Jerseys with his number were laid in the batters boxes along with black lives matter shirts. The two teams will play a double header today. And the giants in arizona celebrating Jackie Robinson day as well. Top of the ninth, Brandon Crawford with a threerun homer, it was a little too late too little, too late, in fact, the giants lost 74. And at 7 42, coming up this morning on today in the bay, today is the day, as we check back in with laura garcia and Marcus Washington, we hope you will join us as we work to clarf the shelters. Well take you back to our annual event, a little bit different this year because of the pandemic after this. Spare the air quality alert in place and i will have the forecast for clear the shelters coming up just after the break. Stay with us. Its saturday morning and ive got my little lovely rescue puppy here, today is clear the shelters and he has a special clear the shelters forecast coming up in just a few minutes. Hes a little tired. My little rescue pup, got him in el paso, texas, i hope you all get a forever buddy. Hes a good snuggle monster. Today is a great day when it comes to calm weather. Weve got the spare the air alert in place, thats made for unhealthy air quality throughout the bay area because of the wildfires nearby. I want to get to your forecast and talk about todays overall daytime highs, in dublin its 58 degrees, were under a microclimate poor air alert, and check this out, this is in San Francisco, its not broken and you should be able to see the city but because of the fog you cant make umm the buildings behind it. In san jose a little bit of a better view there, you can see the orange glow, 58 degrees. As of now it looks like that air quality and that spare the air alert has been extended through tomorrow. Were seeing unhealthy air qualities all the way from the north bay down to the south bay and depending on how much of a grip they get a hold of these wildfires we could see a slight improvement today. Weve got the marine layer around the coastline and an increase of onshore winds. The hour by hour outlook, so you have an idea of what to expect. If you notice around the coastline weve certainly got that cloud cover there all the way down through santa cruz, right through the afternoon. Thats going to bring a little bit of cooling, just slight, for some areas, including the san jose area, 84 degrees. Concord 89, martinez 89. So still a little bit warm but not as hot into the 90s as we saw during this week. Oakland 75. Again, that smoke is expected to linger. And its sort of a developing situation, as far as the fires go and heading into tomorrow. So lets look at how those winds will play a factor. Weve got onshore winds from the north, northeast and as well into the afternoon, look at san jose, 13 Miles Per Hour. So not very gusty, but some of those hilltop areas could see winds of about 15 Miles Per Hour. Were going to keep an eye on that, again that makes out some of that air. And then heading into the start of the workweek we have another change on the way. So this weekend weve got a little bit of a cooldown but weve got a High Pressure system from the west northwest and thats expected to shift into the bay area. Whats going to happen is, anytime we see High Pressure, it tends to sort of trap that poor air quality, kind of like a bubble over the bay area. So were going to see how that shapes out heading into monday and tuesday. One thing youll certainly notice is an increase in temperatures in San Francisco, going from 60s to 70s. Our warmest day of the week likely to be tuesday, even for inland areas as well. Were talking upper 90s. As far as triple digit heat, not going to be as hot as that last heat wave that we saw as far as we can see now. But still hot enough to where some of those interior valleys could see the potential of some triple digit heat overall. Were going to remain in those upper 90s. So sort of enjoy this little bit of cooling that were getting this weekend and that cloud cover around the coastline. Thats definitely helped sort of bring in a little bit of that breeze to sort of clear out some of that smoke but again its all going to depend on the hold they get on these fires, how the air makes those out and heading into tomorrow as well. We can expect to see temperatures in the 90s for inland areas. As far as your clear the shelters event, great weather today. I hope youll get a chance to go out and get a forever pup. I know that marcus has a special German Shepherd hes going to be showing you towards the end of the newscast, he has name is donelle, excited for you all to see him. Thank you, vianey. Ahead on today in the bay were working to clear the shelters and we need your help. Its easy to donate to keep shelters running during this pandemic to adopt virtually or schedule a safe visit to meet a pet. We check back in with laura and marcus right after this. Welcome back. We want to take a few more minutes to highlight our efforts to clear the shelters and find forever homes for shelter pets across the bay area. Today in the bays laura garcia is at pets in need in palo alto and Marcus Washington is at berkeley humane. Lets check back in with laura in palo alto. No more laura garcia on your shoulder, no more double trouble. Exactly. She was a little frisky, running around. Now she needs a nap. Shes very typical of laura garcia. Were out here, bright and early this morning, you know pets in need is providing all these great animals, virtually just log on and you can check out laura garcia or the Marcus Washington or kira klapper as well. Come out and adopt an animal. Youre doing it virtually this year, kind of unique, we are in this pandemic but its such a great cause, 55,000 has been raised for all the local shelters in the bay area, 1,600 animals already adopted out. I want to introduce you this morning to neil sultan, hes from the palo alto track team, hes got a run to clear the shelters. Were here at the palo alto pets in need. Sign up online and do your run anytime, up until monday this week, or next week. And yeah its a virtual run so you can make your own route. And yeah, submit your time to the pets in need website. And yeah if you want to drop by the pets in need shelter we have giveaway items and an event tshirt you can come and pick up. How long do i have to run . Its a 5k, you can walk or run. Thats great though. But what a great idea that you wanted to give back to the shelters. I love that. That says so much about the bay area, the community that we are, and, you know, so many of us are working from home. It could be a great time to bring a new animal into your home to help adjust, you know, and give yourself a little bit of company. Nice little furry coworker you could have. This is just one of the shelters in the bay area taking part in this years big donation drive. Lets check in with marcus right now. Hes over in berkeley. Yeah, im out here having a good time. Things dont get started with the adoptions until 10 00 but they have Veterinary Services around the corner. They start at 9 00 this morning. You can see some of the pets up for adoption right here, you have little Marcus Washington, laura garcia there, of course a lot of pets out here to adopt. Mostly cats here today but you are in luck, we do have one, a newfound friend here, this is darnell, a shepherd mix, about 5 years old. Look how chill he is. Hes just like, you know what, im going to lay down with you, darnell. What are you going to do . You want to get up with me now. How have you enjoyed it . This is one of the dogs you could come out here and adopt. He is so loving and friendly right now. All the pets that get adopted get this cool bandanna here like darnell is wearing and also, everyone else, darnell, look what we got for them. Oh, yeah, you see that, uhhuh, you have a mask you can get right here, everyone can get a mask when they come out here. Its really cool. Do you need one . Okay, maybe not. Were having a great time out here, if you can, come out and get your pet adopted. If you have a pet you havent been able to get to the veterinarian, they have services here for you, low cost, its a great opportunity for you all to come out here and really give a helping hand and find that forever home for those pets. But until we see you out here, darnell and i are just going to sit here and chill. My new buddy. I love seeing you on the ground with the dog and the dog mask. This just gets better and better, marcus. And darnell, is so cute. If my sons are watching they will probably ask me to bring darnell home but im waiting until we get out of diapers, and then we will bring a pet into our house. We show dogs and cats every saturday and every saturday im tempted to bring one home. Hopefully some of our viewers can help us participate, and support our cause this saturday. And every saturday of course. But we have a special push for it today. Thank you, laura. Thank you, marcus for joining us on your weekend. And well be right back after this.
