Than 350,000 acres. Now, some good news coming out of there, it is 27 contained. But, sadly, five deaths associated with the fire have been confirmed. That fire also destroying 930 structures. Meanwhile, the scu complex fire burning in the east and south bays is the largest fire bniin. It is the second largest in state history, and its covering 363,000 acres. And it is only 15 contained. 20,000 structures are threatened by those flames. And the czu fire is burning in the woods of san mateo and santa cruz county. Now we brought you a live update on that fire on today in the bay this morning. It has burned 78,000 acres and is now 17 contained. Seven people are still missing. 330 structures are destroyed. Now officials are holding a News Conference about the lnu fire. Lets listen in. Specifically for this its 7079674207. Now id like to invite up our Operations Sections chief chris waters for an update. Good morning, everybody. I want to start out real quick. First of all my names chris waters. Im the Operations Section chief on the lnu lightning complex, doing Operational Update. Im going to start off with orientation. This is broken into two zones. Weve got the west zone, the Pacific Ocean to the Sonoma County line. We got the east zone which is from the Sonoma County line to the central valley. Meyers fire is 97 contained. Highway 101 is reopened and all those activities are in process. Talk about the walbridge fire. Walbridge fire is in the guerneville area just north and west of guerneville. Redwood, very heavy fuels, steep terrain, difficult to acre and numerous structures. And were still connecting the dots trying to protect structures, trying to build lines between vineyards and grassy open areas and looking for opportunities to do backfiring. Moving towards the east zone, were going to start branch 30. This is cape valley to winters. Were starting to pick up our hose and bring back all the materials that we use to fight fires. From winters down to vacaville, solano county, the vaca area, Pleasant Valley road. We are still continuing to mop up, doing calls for service and doing some additional mopup and patrol and getting ready for repopulation operations. From fairfield north to atlas peak, working on repopulation and cleaning u a lot of our resources to extinguish the fire and continuing to prepare the area for repopulation. Basically atlas peak up to about calistoga or just above calistoga, more resources, mopup, patrol starting to haul back materials. And then we get to the highest priority of the fire, which is branch 20, which is the northwest portion of the fire which is from basically palisades all the way up to middletown. This is the highest priority of the fire and the last piece that we have to pick up. Last night on the north end up by middletown, we started firing, using backfire to come south and to tie into right above calistoga and then working down to finish this area above Schwartz Creek using bulldozers, hand crews, backfiring and Engine Companies of course to try to tie this fire. This is kind of the last and most difficult piece of this fire. And were hoping that today with the break in the weather the last two days, that we get that opportunity to do so. Thank you. Thank you, chief. Now id like to invite up our sheriff, sheriff mark essick and sheriff John Robertson for a Law Enforcement update. Good morning. Im here today with my colleague from napa county. And were here to just give you a quick update on evacuations. Your sheriffs departments in this area are working with chp and with cal fire. We continue to work closely with our partners in these evacuation zones to keep you safe and keep you out of those evacuated areas so that our firefighters can get in there and do work. We are working on a repopulation plan and a reentry pran. Our overall hope is to get you back home quickly and safely. Your safety is pair amount to us. We ask for your patience as we go through this repopulation stage and reentry stage. It is still a rapidly changing and progressing environment with the fire. So we dont keep. And that would be detrimental to the entire process. So please bear with us in your patience as we start to repopulate areas. As the Damage Assessment continues, its important for everyone to raise that this is a time when someone people realize they no longer have homes, that they are going to be experiencing considerable losses. So it is always important, and we urge you to look out for your neighbors, care for your neighbors and be patient with one another as we go through this process of repopulating areas and getting back in for reentry. That is all i have to report to you. Thank you and stay safe. Thank you, sheriff. Now id like to invite up our unit chief, chief jones. Good morning. Thank you for tuning in. So we got some positive news today in regards to the fire. In some places are repopulating, which is amazing news. From the beginning our resources have been limited. But we are starting to get a lot of resources coming into the fire, and thats continuing. And thats been extremely helpful. The resources out on the line from the start, they continue to work hard because they want you home as quickly as possible. Their safety, your safety is our number one priority. So, please, please i ask that you be patient. This incident is very dynamic. So, as you just heard on the briefing, some parts are in mopup and patrol. The black line that you saw on the map, that means those areas are secure. Were still monitoring. Other areas have active fire. That means that youll still see smoke, there will still be flames. There will still be folks that will be evacuated and out of the area. So, i ask you to theres a lot of information flowing from east to west, north to south on this incident. And each part is dynamic. I ask you to please tune into reputable sites for information. You can go to fire. Ca. Gov or to your countys local emergency website to get current information. Were all working together. Both Law Enforcement, our counties, all of our fire folks to get you the most current information and keep you abreast of the communications. I also want to remind you that it is fire season. But we are once this fires done, we still have a very long time to go. We are in the middle of peak fire season. That means that you need to have a plan, you need to be prepared. And i ask you to please if you havent done so, go to readyforwildfire. Org and see how you can do your part to prepare to help us help you in case of an emergency. Thank you all. Thank you, chief. Now id like to invite up our Incident Commander chief kavanaugh. Good morning and thank you for joining us again for these news briefings and updates on the lnu lightning complex. This morning real quick on the statistics. Ive been doing every morning. We are sitting at a total of 352,913 acres this morning. 27 containment. As we move for the east zone over here on the hennessy fire, the hennessy fire is at 296,050 acres, 29 contained. And over in the west zone ons r 54,503 acres at 17 contained. Meyers fire is still we have that one really good. So its 2,360 acres, 97 contained. We feel really good about the meyers and thatll continue working towards containment on the meyers fire. On personnel, we are looking good, and we have 304 fire engines, 12 helicopters, 18 crews, 41 dozers for a total personnel of 2,194. So as you can see from the last five days we have had a substantial increase in the resources that were having here on the lnu complex and we really appreciate that. From the Operational Update that we had from chief waters, were optimistic about everything thats taken place here on the complex. With that, though, we still have some trouble areas that were still dealing with. And we have still evacuation orders in place. Were lifting some evacuation orders as of today. So its very dynamic, especially with the fire behavior. As ive been talking about every day with the weather, when the skies clear in the afternoon, thats when our fire activity picks up in the afternoon. And it causes some issues in some of those areas. With that, though, coming into the incident in the next few days i think is important. We are scheduled here to receive 12 National Guard hand crews with roughly 250 people. Were still working on the estimate which day theyre going to be here. But hopefully by the end of the week well have those hand crews helping in on the lnu complex. Yesterday afternoon we couldnt fly a lot of tankers or aircraft because the smoke inversion. In the afternoon when the skies lifted, for example, we had on the fire complex yesterday we had three very large air tankers which are called vlats. On the fire entire complex they dumped 87,000 gallons of retardant on the entire complex. To date as of this morning were up to 2. 8 million gallons of retardant that has been dumped on all the fires that weve had combined from the very beginning from just started. Were feeling good. E ongoing process. The data has to be collected. We want to make sure its validated. Were in multiple counties and trying to make sure we get the right information to get to those counties for the proper reporting for Damage Assessment and also back to the repopulation. There is going to be repopulation thats going to take place today as i stated and thats a good thing. We want to get people back into homes as quick as possible. One thing i would like to take just a moment here is id like to give the cooperation and communication is huge, i keep saying that. I would like to really give a special thanks to all the Law Enforcement and utilities, the companies that are out here. This morning in the operational briefings, there was a standup clap for all the Law Enforcement agencies. We were dealing with six counties, multiple Law Enforcement agencies. And the job that they do, its in the background, theyre not really seen out here in front. You know, you see the red fire engines but we cant do this without Law Enforcement and we cant do it without the utility companies. That is how we get people back into their homes. Thats how we get people evacuated. But the big thing is getting those people back into their homes. So i personally from the team from chief jones, we want to thank the utility and Law Enforcement. Thank you very much. Correction. I would like to ask, are there any questions . Im sorry. Okay. Thank you. All right. And were getting the update there. That is the update from the lnu complex fire that we saw today. Of course a lot of work being done right now to get control of that fire. 2. 8 million gallons of fire retardant has been dumped. And theyve gotten a lot of help to come in and help battle that fire. Of course they say there are some areas that they are going to repopulate. Were going to continue to listen in on this and see what they have to say now. [ speaking Foreign Language ] and that is the spanish version of the update that they have going on there with the lnu complex fire. But certainly a lot of ground that theyve gotten there as 20 plus percent of that fire in containment. Of course were going to continue to monitor all the updates we have. Of course they are on our website at nbcbayarea. Com. And of course we send those out with our nbc bay area app, which is free. If you dont have it, this is a great time to get it just to stay up to date on whats going on with those fires and all the news happening in the bay area. Were going to go to a break for a quick moment. But well be right back. What should you bring . Computer hard drives, medication, food for your pet, toiletries to last for at least a few days. Close all the windows and remove curtains. Leave a light on in each room so firefighters can more easily spot your home. Outside, move anything away that you can. Take a ladder and prop it up outside your house and pull your hose where firefighters can see it. You want to make sure your home is the easiest one to protect. Im greg, im 68 years old. I think most adults will start realizing that they dont recall things as quickly as they used to or they dont remember things as vividly as they once did. Ive been taking prevagen for about three years now. People say to me periodically, man, youve got a memory like an elephant. Its really, really helped me tremendously. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Well, welcome back. We are hearing for the first time, firsthand accounts of what its been like for the last two weeks for evacuees in mount. Victoria foster lives in Boulder Creek and her home about a mile from the fire lines. She tells us when those fires first started it really didnt seem like there was a lot of help from firefighters. But this is due to many of those fires burning across the state. But when she saw crews from l. A. Show up, she became emotional. Oh, my god, l. A. s here. Thank god. She was forced to evacuate her home last week taking only a few items and her pets. Foster and her husband went to stay with some friends farther away from the fire line. Thats abear creek road. They watched from above as those flames below grew day sure if i trees blowing up. It sounded like bombs were going off. I cant even describe it. Youre just hearing this Massive Force of the elements come in and just create this devastating sound that sounds like warfare. Now, eventually foster and her husband were forced to also evacuate their friends home. They are now staying in south san jose. So far she has no word on her home condition, but she says that shes not yet give up hope. Well, a developing story for you. Jacob blake, the man shot by police in kenosha, wisconsin, is now paralyzed. Blakes father told the Chicago Sun Times that his father is paralyzed from the waste down after being shot eight times by police. He was gearing up for his sons eighth birthday. But later that evening the elder blake got word that his son was shot. Minutes later he saw the now viral video. Meanwhile, this drone video showing the aftermath of the protests in kenosha. This is after a night of demonstrations there. Smoke still huge part of the air. And this morning fire crews remain there putting out those flames dowsing the buildings that were on fire. Multiple buildings were on fire late monday night. Second protests sparked by sundays shooting. Well, we are tracking hurricane laura. The Tropical Storm was upgraded to a hurricane earlier this morning. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm marco made landfall last night and is producing heavy rains and its moving north. So far, just some modest flooding and a few feet of the storm surge there. Now, those on the gulf coast, they are preparing for hurricane laura, which is on the collision course with texas and louisiana coast lines strengthening to a possible category 2 or 3. Ive been through katrina, and i dont want to ride out another one if it could be helped. Both louisiana and texas have received emergency declarations from fema with louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards mobilizing some 200 National Guardsmen, and almost 100 high water vehicles just to be ready in case they have to deploy for emergency rescue. Its certainly something to think about there. But here in the bay area were dealing with our own issues with that air quality just not letting up along with those fires. Yeah. We are still going to have heavy smoke around the bay area as long as those fires continue to burn. So were hoping for some better containment so that we can get some improvement in this air quality. We can see the heavy smoke thats over walnut creek right now as we head over towards San Francisco, also some smokey conditions after a lot of the fog that we had earlier this morning since cleared. And then in san jose its not so bad, just the slight shift in the wind and things change quickly. So as we are going into today, you may have scenes like this where you can get a little bit of a blue sky or it may quickly turn brownish hue that weve seen because of that poor air quality. And notice where we have some of the worst air quality right now in San Francisco and oakland moving over toward concord where its now changing over to high levels of particulate matter. And the south bay, you can see it in the sky. And so we do have some lower levels. But, still, if you have breathing problems or even people who have been exposed to this for now over a week, well, it really starts to irritate you. Even just small amo as we look at our weathconditio around those fires, the better the weather conditions, the more containment they can get. So far things have been looking good. We look for higher humidity during those Morning Hours and cooler temperatures. And so far as we look at whats going on, looking first at the czu lightning complex, we are seeing now current temperatures at 73 degrees. And its heading up to about 84 degrees. We head over towards the largest fire, and we are still looking at some warmer temperatures there. Well be reaching up to 88 degrees today and looking at 36 humidity during the driest time of the day, which isnt too bad. Then were also seeing some higher humidity as you head up towards the lnu lightning complex. The temperatures there will be warmer as we reach into the low 90s today and just a light wind. As we look at our temperatures for the bay area, we are going to see those highs reaching into the upper 80s and low 90s. So this is slightly cooler than weve seen recently. We still have the same weather pattern where we have this large stubborn area of High Pressure heating up our inlandow we do ht marine layer that builds during those early Morning Hours and allows for that fog to develop near the coast and that brings in that higher humidity. This is probably what we need right now, just a stable weather pattern, something a little bit more predictable so that we dont have those erratic winds gusting up and changing the fire in different directions. We are going to see low 90s and then eventually into the mid90s by the end of this week while San Francisco will have that cool weather, highs in the upper 60s over the next seven days. Thanks, kari.
