E have seen b the air quality throughout the day. It has both worsened and improved hours apart. So lets take a look at where things stand right now. The latest update here from the bay area air Quality Management district shows us that a major part of the bay area has significantly improved from where things were this afternoon and this evening and now stands at moderately unhealthy air quality. Thats the yellow that you see. Then weve got some orange covering san jose and red over livermore, which is unhealthy air. Earlier today at 3 00 in the afternoon, most of the bay area was covered in red and even some purple, meaning very unhealthy conditions moving toward areas like antioch. As we made our way into the evening, some improvement during the 5 00 hour for people in the peninsula and San Francisco. But for folks in antioch and livermore, unhealthy and even hazardous air. Look at some video for you where you can see how hazy the skies were over there. That was some of the worst air quality in the bay area tonight. Returning now to our fire coverage, whenever there seems to be fires that decimate communities, some people use it as an opportunity to loot. It is not just homeowners being targeted. Santa cruz county investigators tell us a firefighters car was broken into overnight up in the santa cruz mountains. The thief emptys the Firefighters Bank account. Now nearly 90 Police Officers and Sheriff Deputies are patrolling the area to make sure looters are arrested. It is unfortunate that one of our fire commanders in that area, while out taking care of business and directing the Fire Fighting crews, somebody entered the Department Vehicle and stole his wallet and drained his bank account. These nine suspected looters have been arrested. Coming up at 11 30, well have much more on how officers are cracking down. We have new video to show you some of the destruction in californias oldest state park big basin. The complex fire levelled the Visitors Center and took down large trees. You can see camp sites that were destroyed and how little time some people had to leave the park. Food was actually left behind at one camp site. This city is just from the first four miles of the park, so there is likely much more damage in other areas. The woodward fire continues to burn out of control. Now today the incident command post and base camp have been moved out of the evacuation warning area. This kind of move is very common as the fire spread. Woodward fire, 5 contained. The acreage burned 2,700 acres. Both numbers the same as last night. So much to keep track of tonight. But particularly all eyes are on the weather forecast, keeping an eye on the wind and particularly any of this dry lightening. I know, jeff, you have your eyes glued to the lightening strike monitors. And we are seeing some thunderstorms moving close to the bay area. So far we havent seen any lightening strikes for us tonight. But the chance still very much remains for us as we head into those overnight hours into tomorrow. I wanted to show you why we have been stuck in this pattern of heat, humidity and then this on again off again chance of some thunderstorms. It is very unusual for us. See on this map here. Weve got High Pressure. Thats helping to bring in the heat. But then we have low pressure offshore, and thats helping to bring up some humidity and also this unstable air thats producing the lightening. So High Pressure and low pressure acting together to create this Conveyor Belt of humidity and heat for us. Thats why were seeing this strange pattern. When you look at the radar and our app and you pull it up online, you will see a lot bubbling up from the south. Thats why. You can see thats what were dealing with right now. We have lightening strikes over the area. We have seen a few offshore santa cruz. We will put this into motion and you can see just what i talked about, this activity moving in from the south. Again, nothing in the bay area right now, but it is very close, this instability. And the nature of thunderstorms is some people will get it. Others will not. Right now were in the clear. Were seeing some showers develop here from just to the east of freemont. It is moving off to the north, which could bring us a new light showers here by 11 50. Well take you over to the fair field area and were also seeing some light to moderate rain fall that will move over the interstate as we continue for the next 30 to 45 minutes. Lightening still a possibility. What about the fires . What about the forecast . There has been so much going on with our phones and the alerts and we wanted to show you those three main fire zones. One in the north bay, one in the south bay, also the santa cruz mountains. You can see in the lefthand side of the screen, i have the forecast here and tomorrow this is going to be the worst of the conditions. A hot 94 degrees. Wind gusts up to 25 miles an hour. You see activity in the northern planks of the fire. But containment did increase today up to 21 . Down in the south bay, this fire has raged. Really not a lot of improvement today. 343,000 acres burned. Only 10 contained. Tomorrow 92 degrees. Over to the santa cruz mountains, this fire has grown on the north and the eastern side. Tomorrow 84 degrees. Some good news. I dont really see winds above 20 miles an hour, so thats at least a slight bit of comfort, if we can call it that. My extended forecast here does keep some dry lighten chances all the way through thursday and does decrease by thursday. But this is a forecast that could change day by day. Every day you could see those numbers change a little bit. But i want you to be prepared for that. You can see hot 90s over the next several days. We should be stuck in this on again off again pattern with the heat and humidity and more lightening chances. That pattern i showed at the start, we might just be locked in again for maybe a tenday period. It is not just a tomorrow thing. Well be monitoring it for a while, it looks like. Coming up, these fires arent just impacting people. Animals impacted, too. We will show you one group saving the animals caught in the middle of all this. Later, theyre working around the clock to young girls so many animals in need of a safe place to go during these evacuation. The santa cruz animal county shelter has stepped up to provide temporary homes. They found foster homes for all the animals there to make room for evacuated pets and livestock. One animal control officer even went up into the burn zone. He really wanted to make sure that any animals people couldnt find when they were evacuated had water had they been able to run away from the fires. He did find some chickens and some rabbits. And he did leave out food and water as well as brought some of the rabbits back to the shelter. People concerned about their own pets left behind can contact officer stosi. He plans to go to the burn zone again. Meanwhile, the shelter is asking for donations and cat litter boxes to care for evacuated pets. As the fires continue to burn, we continue to hear about people doing find things. This Animal Rescue ranch in napa valley posted these pictures after hearing about a family desperate to find someone to care for their four animals. The family had to evacuate from clear lake in the path of the lnu complex fire. They found help. Staff members stepped up and fostered all of the animals. That includes fouryearold dog, a onemonthold rescue puppy and two kittens. So cute. Dont forget this month, nbc bay area and telemundo is teaming up to clear the shelters. People are still encouraged to adopt virtually and to donate to nbcbayarea. Com. How about hitting home runs for the San Francisco giants . But this season couldnt get it going, hitting less than. 100. Two home runs. That was one of them. Pence was an incredibly important part of the giant championship teams in 2012 and 2014. In january they were killed in a Helicopter Crash as they flew to his daughters basketball game. We will be back with more news after the break. Welcome back. Another uneasy night as firefighters continue to work around the clock. Here are the latest numbers on the complex fires. The lnu complex stands at more than 347,000 acres. Containment on the fire continues to inch up, though. Last night it was 15 . Tonight it is 21 contained. The fcu complex scorched 344,000 acres, up 4,000 from this morning. The containment at 10 , the same as last night. The czu fire on the coast in the santa cruz mountains, that one turned deadly today. The body of a man recovered from the fire zone of a man near davenport. An increase of 7,000 acres over the past 24 hours. Containment inches up from 5 to 8 . Exhaustion a major concern for crews. Many spending 48 hours on the fire lines. Usually they spend half that amount of time, 24 hours. Reenforcements from out of state moving in. Take a look at this map. You see where the fires are burning. In the north bay you have the lmu. 1,800 firefighters and they kicked up more this weekend. But cal fire says thats great but there should be 3,000 firefighters on that fire alone. Take a look at lcu. They picked up 118 firefighters this weekend. There are now 1,200 firefighters there. And along the coast, 1,300 firefighters are going up against the czu lightening complex fire. 323 more today compared to friday and thats good but still significantly lower than the number of crews cal fire says should be on that size fire. Crews are angry and heart broken over what happened to one firefighter. A thief using this difficult time to take advantage of others. Santa cruz county sheriff did not mince words about his feelings about looters. It takes a special person to wake up in the morning and say, you know what, im going to go victimize and traumatize people who have already been through everything that this community has been through. And generally i would say the District Attorney and myself have a lot of empathy for most people. But i have no empathy. I have no patience for somebody who is going to come into our community and steal from people. The countys District Attorney says looters will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The comments coming after a firefighter made a troubling discovery. Reporter along highway 9 in the Fire Evacuation area, we spotted Law Enforcement officers pulling over and questioning drivers. Some were in unmarked vehicles. Burglary suppression was the name of our game. Reporter they have dozens of officers patrolling the area. Today 60 from santa cruz county. Another 34. We have looking for people trying to prey on people that have evacuated. We want to focus on that. We learned it is not just evacuees, but they may also be targeting the firefighters working around the clock to save homes and businesses. U it is unfortunate and sickening that while out taking care of business and directing Fire Fighting crews, when they entered his vehicle, it was a Department Vehicle and they drained his bank account. That incident happened overnight at the fire station, and they are looking for a sus peck. The muse comes as outrage from residents on social media. One resident writing this is just disgusting. Another saying this is just horrible to hear. Im at a loss for words. It is absolutely disgusting behavior. Frankly, i cant believe that somebody would actually have the nerve to break into a firefighters vehicle or enter their vehicle when theyre there to protect the community. An interesting story. The National Guard was able to build a temporary bridge this evening. Take a look. You can see the bridge lifting evacuees out. About two dozen soldiers from 132nd engineering conduct helped construct the floating structure. This is near the community. The existing bridge in the area was structurally deficient forcing First Responders to use other roofs. The san jose state campus will remain closed for tomorrow and news because of the poor air quality. That means all in person classes are canceled. Now online cancels meetings and services will do on as scheduled. With so much uncertainly, we need some time to catch our breath. Lets do it right now. Maybe this picture will help us. Cal fire tweeted out this photo of micah, a Trained Service dog who they say a ready to help bring a little calmness to everyone and anyone. We are sending alerts with the latest information on the fires. Download our free nbc bay area app and get those sent straight to your home. As we deal with major fires in the bay area, the gulf coast is preparing to get hit by not one but possibly two hurricanes. Marco and laura. The two storms already killed nine people in the dominican republ republic. Now theyre bearing down on large parts of louisiana and texas. There has never been anything like this before. If you are in duress and need help, we will get you as soon as possible, but maybe longer than it ordinarily is. It is set to make land fall tomorrow while laura is expected a couple days later. As parents agonize over the decision about whether to send their children back to schools, there is now a new covid concern, the safety of the air inside classrooms. Heres dr. John torez. Reporter in tampa, florida, this school is adding extra security for parents and staff, installing better air filters. Particles go in and they get trapped. Reporter julian is an english teacher at the school. I think the filters will make us feel a little bit more comfortable walking into the classroom just knowing thats there to help keep us safe. Reporter the upgraded filters are being put in as evidence suggests covid19 spreads significantly through the air, further than previously believed in whats called aerosol spread. Children are starting to back to school. Its already playing a major droplets are sent through the air. They fall quily the ground within six feet. Particles are smaller and lighter. They can linger in the air for hours and travel even longer distances. Thats aerosol spread. It can infect somebody beyond that magical six foot ring we have been talking about for the last six months. It is one reason why you are more susceptible indoors and why air ventilation on plane, offices and schools is being looked at in a new light. A government watchdog recently found over onethird of Public Schools in the u. S. Need improvement to their air systems for proper ventilation. We have underinvested in our School Building infrastructure for decades and were paying the price for that. They will get new filters, a high quality filter. Still, it is not a catchall. A preliminary study from the university of minnesota found that when an asymptomatic teacher was talking in a room with strong ventilation, only 10 of virus particles were filtered out. Is it going to be a softball with covid19, no. But it is a necessary step we have to take. It is an extra Health Measure the cdc has added to their guidelines. Are they asking about the ventilation systems . Absolutely. Are they using better filters. . Should be looking for a merv13 filter. One more item, safety checklist. Dr. John torez, nbc news. Coming up, thanking those on the front lines. Tonight two people are doing what they can to say thank you to firefighters and First Responders. As a way to say thank you, two young girls took it upon themselves to transform the main trance at uc santa cruz. They made it into a wall of gratitude. Handmade banners. This was tweeted out by the Uc Santa Cruz Police department who thanked the entire Santa Cruz Community for its support. A wonderful gesture from those young ladies. Lets turn it over to jeff right now to find out exactly where we stand in terms of these storms coming in to the bay area. And, you know, namely we have had some light showers tonight. The lightening has developed right now over the Central Valley. But we keep that chance of thunderstorms as we move from tomorrow. The other thing, of course, has been the air quality. I took my dog lucy outside just a little bit ago. Had the flashlight. Of course it is dark outside and with the flashlight you can see it was raining down ash. There is just so much smoke and soot in the atatmosphere. You can only be outside five minutes at a time. I wanted to let you know unfortunately tomorrow it stays unhealthy. Even if you dont have asthma or respiratory problems, it will be hard for you to be outside for a lot of time on end. So please be careful of that because the smoke, it really can be debilitating for you. Okay. Other things besides that air quality is the red flag fire warning due to that chance of lightening for the entire bay area. What about the lightening . I have seen it develop. You can see over the Central Valley also the foothills, quite a few lightening strikes. Well go ahead and zone in on that. You can see over the past half hour were now up to 37 lightening strikes. So it is active. It is thankfully staying out of the bay area for now but we cannot let our guard down. I have a few pspotty showers. Well take you to the south. One area im concerned about is right here. We did have some lightening with this about 45 minutes ago. And this is moving off to the north. So this is some unstable air. We will have to watch that for maybe some lightening moving our way. So 1 00 a. M. We had the storms we just showed you continuing to move off towards the north. By 3 30 in the morning, a little bit of hit and miss for us. Most of it is over the Central Valley. By tomorrow morning it seems like a little bit of a lull, but we will keep that in the forecast. The other thing i have been tracking is the fires and the forecast. As ahead through these different zones, look over here. This is the forecast for tomorrow. I do think for the north bay fire, its going to be the worst with 94 degrees and wind gusts up to 20 miles an hour. Down in the south bay, 92 degrees. And this fire just so large. 343,000 acres. Over to the santa cruz mountains, a little cooler there but still very warm for the firefighters. 84 degrees. My extended forecast will show in San Francisco. 60s several days. Butchces go down. But i want to let you know that have that unstable air with us next couple of days. Were looking at 90s as we head to the upcoming weekend. I know you guys of course have been outside like many of us. It is just so horrendous out there. I think i can only stand to be outside for three minutes right now. So we all kind of forget about that for a little bit. Weve got stuff to do. Definitely everybody has to be mindful of that, of course, tomorrow for sure. Any kind of extended period and certainly any kind of exertion outside is out of the question. Jeff, thanks very much. You know the olympics have been pushed off until next year. The paralympics just one year one year from tomorrow, the Opening Ceremony for the paralympics will be held. Mike tirico looks ahead.
