The louisianaborn mcgraw has built up a big base of those fans over the 30 years since he stepped off of a Greyhound Bus in nashville and walked right into a honkytonk. He eventually graduated from those bars downtown to soldout arenas around the world, sometimes performing with his wife, faith hill, a superstar of course in her own right. These days tim and faith are staying put at home in nashville, and thats where we found tim, as he and i got together over zoom for a virtual sunday sitdown to talk about his 16th studio album here on earth and much more. Girl, you never know no one like me tim mcgraw should be midway through a crosscountry 30city tour this summer doing what he loves most, lighting up the stage for his legions of fans. Theres something magical about the collective experience of hanging out with a crowd and playing music that you cant get anywhere else. For these next two hours, youre not going to be the same people that you are all day long. I guarantee you that guy with a cowboy hat up there jumping around like a chicken on a hot plate is not the same guy that he was is 24 7 as well. There is none of that jumping around this year, though, as coronavirus forced mcgraw to cancel his tour. Instead, hes performing and promoting his new album here on earth from the nashville home he shares with his wife, faith hill. You were supposed to be on tour right now right. In support of the new album. Instead youre doing zoom calls with me. That must be very sad for you. Its the highlight of my day, willie. It must be a slow day at your house then. Lets talk about the album. I dont know if you intended it, but in this moment it really hits, which is were sort of all in this together. Sure. I started the process of this album at the end of the second leg of faith and is last soultosoul tour. It was sort of on purpose that i did that because i found that the times that ive spent working with faith, especially touring with faith, that my records got sort of exponentially better because having to sing with her every night is like nascar trying to keep up with an indycar. Shes truly in my opinion one of the greatest singers thats ever sang a song. Then i get that look of the show. Youre faltering a bit, son, you need to keep up. You know that look . The point is she makes me better. But i wanted to put together a 30,000 sort of foot view of life. You can dive into these little vign up. It solidified and became the tent poles. Loving you is why im here on earth singing the song beautifully about sort of this moment we all have where you close your eyes and it hits you. Right. This is why im here on earth. Yeah. Do you remember that moment for you . Well, i certainly remember that moment when i met my wife, thats for sure. But it always i think for everyone, those things happen when you realize what youre doing and why youre doing it and what youre here for. The fathers out there can appreciate the first time that you hold your child is certainly the moment that you realize that anything else that you do has from my pocket and i called mama mcgraw and hill have three daughters, with the youngest about to go off to college. How are you and faith feeling about having an empty house here in the fall . Well, its tough. Theres a part of you that is excited for them, you want them to go out and conquer the world. And you certainly dont want to feel like they dont need you anymore. However, in these times its a little different because not knowing whats going to happen with college with our youngest daughter. You know, for her its not been so good but for us its been sort of a blessing because you never see them that much. So youve also, i understand, had some chores around the house, tim. I think you called it a honeydo list on instagram . Yeah. I try to stay a little busy. I have spurts of yard work energy. But, you know, we had our girls were coming in, the two california were driving across country to get home so faith wanted me to get the yard looking pretty decent before the girls drove up. It looks good. If you really did that. I did, i promise you i did. And he said i hope some day you get the chance to live like you were dying mcgraw grew up in northeast louisiana, the son of a waitress. At the age of 11, he learned his father was Star Major League pitcher tug mcgraw. In 1989, tim dropped out of college and bought a ticket to nashville. His first night in town sounds a lot like a country song. I arrived at 4 00 in the morning on a Greyhound Bus. And i walked. I had my guitar case and one suitcase. I got to the hall of fame lounge and tommy barnes was sitting there, who ended up writing indian outlaw. Which i heard that night later on in my hotel room when we were all sitting playing guitars after i met those guys. I heard indian outlaw that night. Thats wild. That first night in nashville. I said if i ever get a record deal, im going to record that song. Do you ever have those moments and say, my gosh, im walking out on the stage, the place is packed. It wasnt that long ago that you were hearing indian outlaw for the first time . I dont look back that much. Im always so anxious about whats going to happen in the future and where im headed and what im doing and trying to improve and trying to write a better song, record a better song, make a better record, do a better show. You know, i get so caught up in that that i rarely look back at that. Can i get an amen you know, i spent 30 years in this business. As you get older, sometimes youre like, man, i wish i just had six months off, take a breath. Then when that comes, when its forced upon you, i hate it. All of a sudden ive worked for 30 ive worked my whole life and i want to go back to work. Lets hope he gets back out on the road very soon. Tim is such a great guy. My big thanks to him. This week we highlight another life well lived. On december 7th, 1941, the 20yearold american sailor named floyd welch just had stepped out of the shower aboard the uss maryland when he heard a series of explosions and the ring of alarms. They were the first sounds of the japanese attack on pearl harbor, which would kill more than 2,400 americans and draw the United States into world war ii. Welch, who was born and raised in connecticut and had joined the navy a year earlier, sprung into action and encountered a horr scene of smoke and flames, with theas welch and hi rescued men from the water by boat, they heard tapping from inside the neighboring uss oklahoma, which had capsized. They rushed to get the oklahomas blueprints and found safe places to cut through the steel and pull survivors to safety. In all, 32 men were saved from the oklahoma. Welch served out the war on the maryland, known as old mary, as it survived torpedo attacks and a kamikaze strike at the battle of okinawa. Afterward, he returned home to connecticut where he married marjorie and became a farmer before starting his own construction company. In an interview with the hartford current around the 75th anniversary of pearl harbor, welch said of that day, its something we should never forget, even when all of us are gone. Our first high goes to the revelation that a Virtual Political Convention just might be better than the traditional song and dance weve been doing for generations. Instead of the usual pageantry inside a balloonfilled arena, this weeks democratic National Convention was stitched together with politicians, celebrities, delegates and regular citizens scattered across the country to give speeches, performances and testimonials. Chief among the improvements to the format was the roll call where 57 states and territories officially announced their votes, but this time not inside a sterile convention hall. The 30minute roll call took veers on a trip across the country where everybody really could show off their backyards and their signature dishes. The consensus star of the show was a hearty platter of delicious calamari from the small but great state of rhode island. Calamari is available in all 50 states. The calamari comeback state of rhode island casts one vote for Bernie Sanders and 34 votes for the next president , joe biden. That is rhode island Democratic Party chairman joseph mcnamara. The masked chef next to him with the giant plate of calamari is john bodiari of iggys restaurant. Mcnamara is a big calamari guy. A few years back he led a Successful Campaign to make the dish the official state appetizer. There was an actual heated fight, believe it or not, in the state legislature on that question as many Rhode Islanders claim a kind of clam is the quintessential ocean state seafood dish. Rhode island truly a beautiful. Our first low goes to the reason youve always got to keep your head on a swivel at a Major League Baseball game. Lets go out to Oakland Coliseum where the as were hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks on thursday night. The dbacks rip a foul ball into the seats and drills one of the spectators right in the head. Luckily for everyone involved that spectator is a giant teddy bear. As you know, the teams have been getting creative to fill their seats without human fans. The as going with a family of plush bears in that section. The teddy bear appeared to be smiling even after taking a line drive to the fluffy melon and the as confirmed the bear is okay. Were happy to report that t bear despite feeling a little stuffy has passed concussion protocol and will be ready for tonights game. His new seat neighbor grabbed a helmet out of his trunk, get it, as a precaution. Our next high goes to americas Great Teachers who are getting creative to make this Strange School year somewhat normal for our kids. Nearly every school has installed more dispensers for Hand Sanitizer and spaced desks farther apart as part of the effort to keep coronavirus away. But thats not the fun stuff. Check out this first grade classroom at st. Barnabus Episcopal School in florida. The teacher set up each desk to look like a little jeep complete with plexiglass windshields. Shes teaching the kids simple social distancing rules like dont get in someone elses car and keep your hands inside the vehicle at all times. Teachers who School Online are keeping their kids engaged with eyes like bitmoji classrooms. This one is in corpus christi, texas. Its a virtual classroom with the teachers avatar and a space decorated like the real classroom. And this third grade teacher in franklinton, north carolina, had her students pick stuffed animal seat fillers so she wont feel so lonely while teaching to an empty classroom. Teachers obviously are the best. Our final low goes to an indiana 4yearold named charlie who became a viral star this week when she was having none of her first dance recital. Thats her in the front row. While the other kids danced along to the paw patrol theme song, charlie stood her ground. Lets see if the chicken dance is more charlies speed. Nah, not feeling that one either. Even as her friends danced the chicken dance, charlie barely moves a muscle. Okay, surely she cannot resist baby shark. No, nothing there either. But wait, it gets better. The dance structure you see in front of her right there, that is her older sister, giana. Maybe thats the problem . We are told charlie did start feeling it for the finale and brought down the house. Make em wait and then hit em with it.
