It is a hassle moving every year. We had to move last year because of what happened last year. This is a first day we had a shift in the wind and a concern now is the fire pushing to the east as well as up and around the northeast. Reporter the first time these winds shifted in this directi direction. They prepare for the possibility specifically doing air drops in parts of sonoma county. That possibility of dry lightning coming into the area in less than 24 hours is a cause for concern. Our concern is what we saw last week of dry Lightning Storms system come to the area. The concern is a, we can have initial start and b, we could have potentially erratic fire behavior of the passage of the system. Reporter a lot of these firefighters are stretched thin. Some of them are working long hours, for some of them have worked 72 to 96 hours straight. Thats a lot of hours worked on these wildfires. Reporting live, pete surators. Pete, thank you very much. The second largest fire in states history. It is burning across five counties. Both of these fires were sparked by unusual Lightning Strikes that happened last weekend. Speaking of those Lightning Strikes, check out this map showing where the Lightning Strikes parked the fire which interestingly outside the perimeter of the fire they started on august 16th. I thought i knew everything about evacuations, i found out about curtains and ladders. If you dont know about it, you need to check out our website. I would pay close attention when kari talks about the weather but considering a situation we are in right now. I would pay close attention to what she says and whats coming this weekend and what is it going to mean for the fires in our area . So much going on. Lets start with the sunset that we have right now. This bright orange sunset. We know we get this beautiful tropical sunset. It comes with an ominous reason. That particle is giving us an orange hue right now. You can see this smoke spreading in across the bay as we look over towards the west. Lets take a look at whats going on with these fire conditions and what firefighters are facing right now. Temperatures wise we are feeling warm air, low to mid80s. The winds are still calm, we are seeing low humidity right now in a 30 to 40 range. As we look at whats going on with scu lightning complex in parts of the diablo range, temperatures in the mid70s. Humidity is not too bad. We expect for it to go down everyone moeven more. We are seeing a surge in moisture into the bay area, this is something that well be watching closely because this can detect lightning as it happens even if there is no rain in that spot. We have been talking about the remanence of this tropical system coming again as it continues to move closer well have high surge in humidity in the upper levels of the atmosphere. The set that we are seeing right n now is not the same as last weekend. We have the same area of High Pressure and with this clock wise flow well draw the r remanence of the tropical system. This system is going to interact with the fires we have. We may not have the same weather set up. It is hard to pinpoint where well see those Lightning Strikes but it happens higher in the atmosphere. As it falls into the dry lair of the atmosphere near the surface, the rain evaporates but we are left with lightning. You get high wind gusts come out of the storm that can make it erratic and changing direction which is not good for those firefighters out there on the frontlines. We have a chance of storm tomorrow morning. Some stronger storms by tomorrow night and monday morning. Some of those gusts may peak at 60 miles per hour. Of course we know lightning means new fires. Look at our temperatures tomorrow, it is still going to be hot. Upper 80s and low 90s. Some pospots will reach into th low 90s. Along the coast, mid80s for palo alto. We are watching all of this. I will have another update coming up later. Thank you, kari. Coming up, these fires are not just affecting humans but animals as well. Where this Mountain Lion was spot. An extreme effort that firefighters going through to save the observatory. Making sure the observatory remains safe during this fire. In the East Foothills down in san jose. A look from above the lick of observatory, you can see smoke in the background of it. It is fine, the observatory is 133 years old. Check this out, a surveillance camera caught this lion roaming in the san bruno neighborhood. The big cat is hanging around someones fire. The fires are forcing animals to leave their usual habitats. The daily city is one of several cities securing this massive effort. Wildlife displaced by the fire. Basically any animals rescued or evacuated are headed to the cal house. Coming up, smoky skies across the bay area, contributing to some of the worst air quality in the world. Well take a look at how much air quality has changed in the last 24 hours. Ich wildfires threaten tens of thousands of homes. We are watching the fires line all weekend long. Make sure you join us at monday morning 4 30 to 7 00 a. M. Right now on a special edition of nbc bay area, a race to get flames under control. Another round of dangerous weather begins to move in. Firefighters are making some progress. There is a real threat ahead, strong winds could undo all the gains made today and the threat of lightning could start more fire. Our sky ranger was over the north bay, this is beghters hop not find any more scenes like this. I want to give you some kind of perspective on this. More than 700,000 acres have burned. A million acres have burned statewide. The czu complex destroyed and 2 structureses astructure are threatened. The smallest of the complex fires and 5 contained. Thats up from 2 last night. The scu complex fire is massive, 340,000 acres thats burning in multiple spots, alameda and contra costa county, containment remained at 5 . The at thats in the north bay including napa and sonoma. Four people have died in that fire. It is still at 15 of containment. Lets keep on talking about the lnu fire. Bringing in pete surato. I know we heard from the update tonight that they made some gains today and they feel confident in fighting that fire. What are le creuseting of the success today and the next couple of days will be like . Reporter of course they are looking to the shifting winds to the northeast. We are standing here in the west, a little bit of a concern. Theyre worried for that dry lightning and of course theyre saying firefighters have been stretched fairly thin. I know i mentioned in the last report they were anywhere from 72 to 96 hours. Some of those firefighters even having their lunch break on the fire line. While they made some progress today. They know these fires and winds are shifting. Very important when we talk about the spread of wildfires and containment. Theyre keeping an eye on thatn tomorrow, theres concerns could be a repeat of what we saw last week. All of this that impacted wildfires and dry lightning last week. Now thats something we are looking forward to. Pete, it is obvious that when this extends over a period of days, it takes a toll on firefighters but it got to take a toll under the community as well. Being under the threat of fire for so many days. Been your exp of talking to Community Members whether to stay or leave. Reporter we cover so many of these wildfires in the north bay. They tell me they feel like it is the north. This year they are dealing wildfires. They are ready to evacuate and have their bags ready and ready to go. I went to windsor talking to one person. He moved to his windsor home because last year he was evacuated due to the kincade fire. I am sure our viewers remember that. Across the street i talked to another guy, you know what i am going to wait to see how these winds shift and from there i will make my decision if i want to leave. Windsor is under an evacuation warning. So it is a mix bag but the most important part for our viewers, you got to put safety first. If you have these warnings in place, take them seriously. I know you mention items people need to have. Thats something they need to take seriously even if it is just a warning in their area. It is interesting, pete. Obviously you know how bad it could be because we lived through it before. People can be complacent and maybe they are not taking this as seriously as they should. Pete suratos is live with us. A live shot at fremont right now. You can detect the haze and smoky skies. Now we are looking at the possibility of dry lightning. Kari hall is joining us. What are the chances of some lightning accompany by rain later on or sunday ormo monday Something Like that, could that happen . Well, the rain does not look likely at this point. We are seeing some Lightning Strike in the southern sierra right now. The air near the surface is so dry. Looks like a lot of that rain may evaporate before it makes it down to the ground. High clouds moving again and clouds lower at the atmosphere and tropical system moving closer to the bay area. Well be tracking this hour by hour. Honestly, the model, we are seeing some clouds here, there will be the possibility that those clouds may spark some lightning. Here we are and sunday morning of our highest chance of stronger storms moving in. I will be tracking this and well talk more about what it means and our forecast going into next week. Thats coming up a little later. Thank you very much, kari. A lot of people concerned of that air quality. Anoushah is joining us with where things stand. Things seem to be improving a little bit. Yesterday morning, the bay area blanketing in yellow. On this map we capture in the bay area. Yellow meaning moderately unhealthy air. The red color you can see areas surrounding vacaville and livermore and santa cruz. Conditions became worse at 2 00 with most parts of the bay area covered in red. Now our realtime map showing you some improvements parts of San Francisco and oakland and the peninsula. The bay area air Quality Management district warning folks that conditions are not where is we want them to be. We are hoping that smoke and air quality does improve over the weekend. However, without fire containment we are not going to be able to enjoy clean air over this weekend. So obviously this air is dangerous for children and the elderly and anyone with a health or a respiratory issue and for anybody whos healthy and does not fall into this category obviously irritation in the eyes or the nose and throat, if you have any trouble make sure ucy u you consult with a doctor. You are going to get smoke from one of those fires. Absolutely. As we have seen unhealthy air levels for not just people but for pets as well. Chris chmura is with us. Good evening, air goes for all of our dogs. We talked to dr. Heed today. She says it is important to keep pets in doors with windows closed as much as possible right now even if you dont haves your airconditioning. Getting a fan on them and keeping them moist and fan blowing ace greblo blowing is a great way to keep them cool and keeping the windows closed. The air quality is so bad and it comes into your house. Probably good a idea avoid long walks out there right now. Threatening of another lightning lets bring in our meteorologist reminded me when we had this early Lightning Storm it was proceeded by some huge gusts of winds which then were not so much of a problem but now we have the fires, when that winds comes, i cant fathom what it can do. Right. You think at those storms that do develop and how they can affect the wind direction with those crews out there who are trying to get some containment and fighting those fires on the frontline. Lets take a look at this shot from atlas peak. You can see the plume of smoke coming out and flattening as it metlif moves away from that area. We see weather gets created around the bay area.
