Im marcus washington. Right now we want to get to meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast that we can expect today. Talk about what is behind you there. This is the last image captured in the Santa Cruz Mountains shortly before midnight before flames overtook this camera. We know this fire is spreading rapidly across the Santa Cruz Mountains, as well as the rest of the bay area as weve seen some very warm weather. Lets take you to the north bay. Several fires burning here and temperatures this morning mostly in the 70s. The humidity is coming up just a little bit but look at the gamble fire. Humidity levels only at 21 . Very dry. So that causes those fires to spread more quickly. As we head to the Santa Cruz Mountains, we had a lot of smoke coming into the south bay and our Current Conditions, our temperatures in the upper 70s. Early in the morning, we havent seen a good recovery here where we look for lower temperatures and lower humidity, as well. As we look at what is going on jose, east foothills. We are seeing the temperatures now in the low 70s. Low humidity and thats the reason why these fires are spreading rapidly, even though we dont have a strong wind this morning. Well be watching this with more updates on the fire weather conditions. Mike, hows it looking as people are fleeing their homes . Well, kari, obviously, a scary situation. You can see fire from the freeways. Stay with me for one second here. Were talking about these, the hills around san jose. Observatory youre able to see the glow of the lights and 130. Off for a good portion around the observatory and then heading east and the freeways all right and thats why theyre in green and the major left, youre seeing red there and closures because of the fire down in towards the Santa Cruz Mountains and were also looking up towards the north bay where 128, 121 all affected by the alameda fire. The big changes down in the south bay. Hand it right back to you, marcus. Thanks, mike. Want to get to the East San Jose area. This is where today in the bay bob redell is live this morning. The flames on the move overnight in the hills area. Talk about the latest that is going on now. Youre talking about the scu complex burning from brentwood and here in Santa Clara County and this is something if youre driving into work this morning along 680 and the 101 corridor and you look in the foot hills, you will see the glow of this fire as evidence of a couple photos viewers sent in to us. Youre looking at shots from san jose. We just bring this up because it shows how much closer to home this fire is. Now there should be noted no indication this fire is going to come down the hill and into the foothills and the flat areas. Still way up there. But, again, as youre driving, this is something you can see. This is what it looks like on the lines itself. From the San Luis Fire Department and gives you a sense of the fact that this fire is so big they had to pull people in and this is just video of them fighting at the peak of mt. Hamilton. You can see just get a sense of how steep it is there as theyre trying to protect that home. This fire right now is at 102,000 acres. Now, its about roughly 20 different fires, including the one burning on mt. Hamilton all the way north to the brentwood area as i mentioned and east in the Central Valley and the San Joaquin County area. We were reporting on this 12 hours ago, 85,000. It has grown 17,000 and, unfortunately, this fire is only 5 contained. This is something we were talking about yesterday. What makes this fire unusual or unique is that a lot of the areas that are burning, in some instances, they never burned before. They at least had no recent prior fire history. So, a lot of the fuel there theyre older which means theyre drier and more established and a lot more of it. Much more conducive to burning. Reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you very much, bob. I know you were talking about mt. Hamilton. Take a look at this, this is the Lick Observatory if youve been up the steep hill that goes up to the Lick Observatory. You see how close the fire is there. This is just one of the many areas that were watching including grandview restaurant is up there, as well. Well continue to keep our eye on this fastmoving fire as bob mentioned. Just 5 contained at this point. More video to show this morning, laura. This is showing the power of the czu lightning complex fire. Those flames are engulfing those homes in Santa Cruz County. The fire covering cars and other belongings that people have in that area. The wildfire, it has more than doubled in size within the last 24 hours. It has now scorched 25,000 acres and it is 0 contained. Multiple mandatory evacuation orders in that area are in effect. We want to give you a different perspective. Check out this new video cal fire posting to twitter. The view from inside a helicopter flying over empire grade in Boulder Creek in Santa Cruz County. You can see the thick blanket of smoke there and flames just burning up trees. We have another aerial view from over uc santa cruz. This video was taken by Jack Ocallaghan just before nightfall. You can see that eerie glow and you can feel that glow over most of the south bay yesterday. Although theres no flex alert today, people are still being urged to save that energy as much as possible especially from 3 00 to 10 00 p. M. Well, everyone across the bay area is being impacted from the smoke and haze from the fires. Take a look at this satellite photo taken by nasa. The thick plumes of smoke go over much of the entire state right here in the bay area where the fires are burning. A spare the air alert is in effect until sunday. Were not going to get any relief from any of this smoke in the air. Want to check in with kari right now. She has a look at our forecast and we need cooler temperatures and a nice, big breeze but thats not coming our way. We are not going to see much of a breeze and temperatures only come down just slightly. As we look at our wind gusts were seeing right now, currently, most of those wind gusts are at about four to nine Miles Per Hour for the north bay. We are seeing slightly higher breezes right along the coastline down to the south county and this is also going to help spread the wildfires in some of those areas. It does come off of the ocean and has higher humidity which may help in some of those efforts but we havent seen a good amount of humidity during these Early Morning hours. But then also as we look at winds, we look at our air quality as were going to see some unhealthy air quality today anywhere from yellows to oranges to reds indicate some unhealthy air quality. We do still need to limit our time outside and the worst air quality is going to be from san rafael down to San Francisco and over towards the east bay and especially bad in the south bay today. Well be watching this. Well talk about those temperatures in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. All right, sounds good, thanks, kari. It is such a busy morning. Good morning. Yes, were here, obviously, very early for you because were covering all these fires throughout the bay area. We want to check in with kari right now. Well check in with mike, as well. You know, 80 was closed. Kari, boy, we could use some relief. Thats not coming our way. Its going to come down just slightly. Let me show you the changes were seeing right now as we take a look at our live camera in San Francisco. Something we havent seen in quite a while. Some fog here that means higher humidity and that will help out especially along the coastline but for the inland areas, the humidity is still very low. As weve been saying, if you are told to evacuate, make sure you have your emergency kit ready to go and, also, have those important papers gathered and a change of clothes, food, water and medication for you and the family and possibly enough to last you for several days. If you are able to get those things prepared, it will help you quickly evacuate, if you are given the word. As we look at our temperatures today, we are going to see a slight cool down. Were in the upper 80s in cupertino and 95 degrees in morgan hill. Even though these temperatures are above average, this is the break that were going to get before our temperatures go back up. So, were looking at 94 in pittsburg while hayward see the temperatures reaching into the low a80s. Coastline upper 60s in Half Moon Bay and for San Francisco, were going to be in the low 70s this afternoon. And for the north bay, expect those temperatures anywhere from 72 in point reyes to 94 in santa rosa. As we looked at our weather set up and what is causing all of this heat, this expansive area of High Pressure that causes the air to sink. As it sinks, it warms up. A clockwise wind flow around it. It is bringing the heat into the bay area. As we look at what is coming down the line, the possibility that this will not budge over the next few days. It may just kind of move back and forth just a little bit, but well watch where the possibility where this could happen to some tropical moisture from a weakening hurricane thats right now over cabo san lucas. As we look at the Current Conditions right now. This is still hurricane genevieve that continues to weaken. Right now wind speeds at 80 Miles Per Hour. As it moves farther to the north, well see it continue to weaken. But, once again, that High Pressure may draw in some of that tropical moisture and we know that is what sparked the storms and the lightning. As of right now hopefully that stays to the south and well just see the warm weather continue. That will be the bestcase scenario here. Looking at the sevenday forecast. A lot of 90s for the interior valleys. Still not coming down into the 80s and i think our temperatures will peak on monday at 97 degrees. With San Francisco going to see those high temperatures in the m mid 70s over the next few days. Mike, you have been watching the commute, as well as evacuation routes. Any issues . Well, the evacuation route, we have areas to avoid, obviously. The commute is just fine, for the most part, as well. Well look out to the live look first from emery ville where we see the view from the east bay. Little hazy. Youll see that all around the bay continuing today. A lot of smoke and distraction as plumes rise up behind hills. As we look for the maps for the area, the bay bridge not a problem as you can see from the live look and getting over towards the north bay more slowing as folks are traveling over the fire area of 128 and 121 and silverado trail and should have updates and maybe some roadways reopening as early as 9 00 a. M. Stand by for that. The locals, of course, youll watch for Traffic Control no matter what my reports say. Down towards the bottom of your screen, closures for highway 1 and down in towards santa cruz and highway 9 for the areas around Boulder Creek and san jose off of 680, you saw fire and that shot of downtown san jose from the hills and 680 and 101 comes around the bend towards 680 and that is where you can see the glow around the conservatory. Back to you. All right, thank you very much. Weve been also monitoring the fires in Southern California, as well. Weve told you about it. Its actually gone down in containment. Firefighters say the lake fire burning in l. A. County near Santa Clarita has scorched nearly 26,000 acres. About 36 contained at this point. It destroyed at least 12 structures. Nearly 13 other structures are threatened right now and evacuation orders still remain in effect. Even though democratic vp nominee Kamala Harris was far from home, she tweeted her concerns about californias wildfires saying in part, while i visited firefighters in california some had lost their own homes, i was struck by their sheer braveryrv thinking of all the firefighters in california and their families right now. And, of course, we are committed to following that breaking news for you all morning long. All of these wildfires continue to engulf parts of the bay area.
