Continue. Governor newsom signing a proclamation to allow some of the emergency and energy users and utilities to use backup energy sources. This is to relieve that pressure on the grid during those peak times. We have Team Coverage for you this midday. Nbc bay areas bob redell is live for us in brentwood. This is where several crews are fighting those fires. But we want to take a look at the weather with meteorologist kari hall. We saw lightning yesterday. And lightning has been the cause of some of these fires. Right. And were seeing the sky just lit up once again. I want to show you whats going on as we take a live look outside in San Francisco. If we were to just sit here and look at this shot, you could see the sky lighting up as we are seeing another active morning for the bay area. As we get a look at the radar and whats happening right now, a lot of storms across the north bay and right off the coast that are getting ready to move into the bay area. So this round of storms for a lot of people a few hours later compared to what we had yesterday, and across the north bay all of those icons that were seeing there are indicating some live lightning, and, boy, it is looking pretty bad for marin county and moving up towards sonoma county. We can see all of the live lightning strikes along with some heavy rain for coastal marin county thats moving off towards the north and east. But weve also seen more storms offshore that will be moving toward San Francisco over the next few minutes. I will be tracking this as well as the high fire danger and the temperatures. Well talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. In spite of the best efforts, firefighters have not been able to get any containment of the large fire burning in contra costa county. Lets go to nbc bay areas bob redell who is joining us live from the command post in brentwood. I know we talked about those mandatory evacuations earlier. They are still in place for about 150 to 200 homes along marsh creek and Morgan Territory roads. That fire is burning behind the hills at the round valley regional preserve in the rural part of brentwood. The east Contra Costa Fire Protection Department puts this as the deer zone fire at 600 acres. Cal fire estimates that its nearly double that. East coco says that the 600 is a conservative estimate. They will get a better sense once an airplane is able to get overhead. Lightning started these fires yesterday morning during that large thunderstorm. There were six fires. Four small ones are contained. The remaining two are still burning. Those are large ones. Humidity is high, which makes the fuels less dry. But it is breezy, extremely hot out here. You can see the sweat on my forehead which makes it difficult for the 300 fire fight errors trying to put this out. And the terrain is steep and remote. Water must be hauled in. Those factors combined explain why this main fire is 0 contained. The lack of being able to throw up aerial support on a regular basis, it is much harder to try to get a containment on this fire. So, as much as we have, we have eight bulldozers out here working on all these fire lines. And with those were trying to make those fire breaks to be able to contain that fire more effectively. Right now throughout the night we had fire that was actually jumping over some of those fire breaks. Reporter take a look at where evacuees can go. There are two locations out here. The Community Center on oak street in brentwood and the Clayton Library on clayton road in clayton. Two locations for evacuees. 150 to 200 homes still under mandatory evacuation. You can see any fire action behind me. But if you were to look off camera, we could see lots of smoke. We know that smoke is widespread, spreading south into the trivalley. If youre anywhere along the 680 corridor, its most likely this thats burning. Talking about smoke, take a look at this. Were tracking another fire. This is a new one in napa county. That is from an image from our skyranger right now above the fire thats burning in napa. These are live pictures. This is near sota canyon road. Were working to find out if there are any homes being threatened in that area. But of course you can see the thick clouds of smoke there. I saw an airplane riding through there dropping some fire retardant. But of course this is just a big problem were seeing across the bay area today. All of these fires. The fire burning south of there as fire crews are just as busy. This fire is called the marsh creek complex fire. Its already burned about 1,700 acres in that area of calaveras road. Ten homes there are under mandatory evacuations. And that wild weather continuing throughout the morning. This is a look at the wave of lightning rolling through the bay area. This is flashes of lightning that we saw through all parts of San Francisco this morning around 6 00. Look at that. Also in the north bay. They also got a pounding by the storms this morning on the upper righthand corner. You can see the lightning there striking certainly a light show throughout the morning in the skies across the bay area this morning. This was in downtown sonoma. And with that heat taking over the bay area, meteorologist kari hall has been working nonstop for us to give us uptodate accuracy of whats going on. Shes even giving us those mini forecasts on the go on social media. So if you want to see those videos, you can follow her on instagram, twitter, as well as facebook. Well, turning to decision 2020, the stage is set for this unconventional convention, and it is going to kick off with some of the biggest names in the Democratic Party from senator Bernie Sanders to former first Lady Michelle obama. This is all happening in milwaukee where it is going to be a packed arena. They will replace it all with a virtual conference. Well, the top goals here is to unify the party and introduce the country to joe bidens running mate Kamala Harris. Nbc bay areas Kristen Welker is where that acceptance speech will be given later this week. Reporter in just hours an unprecedented Democratic National convention will begin at what will be an almost entirely virtual event. The party will officially nominate joe biden and Kamala Harris to lead the president ial ticket. What people are going to see is the unity that not only cuts across our party, but their unity and values across america. Reporter the party aiming to highlight its most agenda items to fighting covid to racial disparities. Night one kicks off with Amy Klobuchar and gretchen whitmer. Also speaking, former campaign rival senator Bernie Sanders, all aiming to unify the party. We have got to do everything we can to come together to defeat donald trump. Reporter the night culminating with one of the partys biggest stars. Former first Lady Michelle obama. When they go low, we go high. People remember that in 2016 former first Lady Michelle obama said, when they go low, we go high. Whats your message tonight . Well, i think that you might hear that again. But with some additional meaning behind it now that weve lived three and a half years, almost four years of a donald trump presidency. Reporter meanwhile, senator harris the first black and asianamerican woman to join a Major Party Ticket is hitting back at racist and false conspiracy theories still not dismissed by the president that she may not be eligible to run. Lets just be very candid and straightforward. Theyre going to engage in lies. They are going to engage in deception. Joe biden goes into the convention with a substantial lead over President Trump. Scott mcgrew has the new numbers for us and a new poll. Scott . Reporter yep. Good morning. The poll which we take every month, marcus, shows a little progress on the behalf of President Trump. Trump up a point, a single point, though that still falls within the margin of error. So we cant say for certain its progress or even statistically exists for that matter. But overall the picture does remain the same with biden far ahead. You were mentioning Kamala Harris. She is helping the poll found more people liking her than disliking her. She is the only one who can say that, not biden, not trump, not pence. She is the most liked among any of them. But as i often remind people when we are talking about national polling, we do not elect a president nationally. We elect them state by state. There are very key states. If we elected a president nationally, Hillary Clinton would be president right now. Part of that reason, no doubt, that President Trump is headed to minnesota and wisconsin today, is that they are key states. Hes going to be talking about the economy. Hes also talking about traveling to iowa, which has been hit by so much rain. A surprise visit to iowa if we can get it in were going to do that. But the very important thing is that we approved the Emergency Declaration for iowa. So theyre in good shape. Theyre working as we speak. Also fema is in iowa now full force. Reporter trump would later say i like iowa, theyre loyal. He won iowa in the six electoral votes in 2016. Most of the news today is going to be about the convention and politics. But lets keep an eye on iowa as you know that storm with hurricaneforce winds went through the midwest. That was last week. And there are still 83,000 iowans without power. Thats how powerful that storm was. It was a week ago. Wow. All right. Scott mcgrew reporting for us. Dont forget to join nbc news tonight for prime time coverage of the dnc race. Coverage begins at 7 00 tonight. New at 11 00 for you, the rock is back open for business. Alcatraz, the iconic bay area prison is ready for visitors again. Nbc bay areas Cierra Johnson is live for us at pier 33. This is where folks are preparing for that first ferry to alcatraz in months. A lot of people have been waiting for this. Reporter exactly. Im pretty new to town and have not had a chance to check out alcatraz. But it looks like i actually just missed the first ferry heading over to alcatraz. It left very promptly at 11 00. But over my shoulder there are some folks checking out the little monument of it, the markup of it. Reservations are required for the before you can even step foot through the pier, youll have to have your temperature checked and have to answer a series of Health Questions and be required to wear a mask. Once you arrive on alcatraz, the famous cell door will not open so folks will have to tour the trails and areas outside. But take a listen to why one of the park rangers feels this may be the best time to visit. Basically you have a great opportunity. Theyll have everything but the crowds. And on a busy Holiday Weekend last summer there might be four to 5,000 people during the course of the day. Today that will be capped at only about 750. So there will be 150 of the public per vote. And that allows Alcatraz Cruises to comply with social distancing. Reporter and you can see those folks over there anxiously awaiting. Everyone weve seen come through has been following those rules wearing their mask and standing six feet apart to have their temperature taken. Back out here that ranger that we heard from, he said he is very excited for himself as well as some of his crew members to get back out there and just enjoy what they do best, interacting. And a new and faster coronavirus test is out, and the fda is calling it groundbreaking. Its a saliva test that could drive down the cost of covid testing and make them available to more people. Nbcs Stephanie Gosk has the latest on this good news. Reporter this morning a Breakthrough Development in the fight against covid19. The food and Drug Administration granting emergency use authorization for saliva direct, a salivabased covid test developed by researchers at yale. This is one of the most significant advances in the six months weve been living with coronavirus. Reporter the new test is far less invasive than the widely used nasal swabs and can actually be selfadministered. Subjects only need to spit into a tube. And thanks to a simplified testing method, the turnaround time is cut from a week to less than 24 hours. Something top doctors say is critical to stopping the spread. If the testing is done to really determine if you are infected and would you be infecting somebody else, thats an unreasonable amount of time to wait. Reporter but perhaps the biggest game changer, the price. One test could cost as little as 10 making it more affordable to test more people more frequently. We envision saliva direct to be a screening tool for large returnto programs. So whether thats return to work, return to school. Reporter the nba which gave around half a Million Dollars to fund the development of saliva direct allowed the product to be tested on some players, coaches, and staff before they reported to the bubble in disney world. They found the accuracy of the saliva direct results matched almost perfectly with proven testing methods. Researchers behind the test hope to scale it across the country and around the world within weeks. A similar test developed at rutgers is already being used by major league baseball. Players and staff are tested every other day. It takes three minutes to complete the process. Its no big deal. Reporter 30,000 saliva samples are taken into this rutgers lab for analysis every day. Roughly 600 are Major League Staff and players. Lab chief andrew brooks breaks down the results with us. Right here is a patient sample that you can see all three genes light up in addition to the control gene. This persons positive for covid. So out of all the thousands of samples a sample is a sample is a sample. That could be a major league player. That could be a grandma in indiana. Reporter it is sharing that process with labs across the country that already have the technology which could have a big impact on testing accessibility. Stephanie gosk, nbc news. Well, happening today, a judge will now hear arguments from concerned parents about whether children should have inperson classes. The governor says that he ordered the Distance Learning for all students and counties that are on the state watch list. Now, with no preseason games on the schedule, the 9ers first game happens september 13th at levis against the cardinals. All right. Lets get a look at that weather today. Because it has been busy for us the lastve got another round of storms coming through. I want to show you whats setting that up for us here in the bay area. We can see this long line of clouds. This is actually tapping directly into a weakening tropical system thats bringing in all of that rain and now that lightning that were seeing again for the north bay. As we get a closer look, so many lightning strikes here. And each time the lightning goes from cloud to ground, our radar is able to detect that. And then it puts a lightning icon on there. And you can see just how many there were yesterday it was estimated that we had about 2,500 lightning strikes across the bay area. And today were seeing another busy one as especially the north bay gets in on some of those storms moving through. Right now northern marin county moving into sonoma county. And this is the second round of storms weve already had this morning, an earlier round of storms. And just lost electricity here. So, i think im oh, wait, the lights are coming back on. All right. We can still see everything behind you. I guess thats just oh, okay. All right. Well, good. Ill just keep going then because this is something weve had to deal with too. Not only the lightning strikes but people losing power. And so unfortunately we are going to have to deal with this for the next few days because its been so hot and humid and we had those rolling blackouts. As we get a look at whats going on as well, we are going to continue to have some very active weather as we go through the next few days. Im going to toss it back to you, marcus.
