What does joe biden in your view remember, you can get your need to do to really make it sunday today mug at the nbc online store. Matter . Well, i would say in a normal its great for morning coffee. Political environment, id say, thank you for spending part of you know what, you dont want to its a little bit of a risk even when youre running against the incumbent to simply be the im not the incumbent candidate and you would normally say thats not a good place to be. I would argue one of the reasons donald trump won in 2016 is there were a lot of not hillary voters, if you will. There were people that werent trump fans but decided they didnt want to vote for hillary clinton. So joe bidens strength in this poll, as you can see, is that hes not donald trump. Its almost the single biggest attribute that he has that voters seem to side with. I do think this week thats o e against, but theyagainst. Should try to do some case for themselves. I think in some ways thats joe bidens job. Kamala harris i think will prosecute more of the case against donald trump during her speech, which is a lot of times the job of the running mate. Definitely a lot to look ahead to. The convention happens this week, all of it against the backdrop of this Postal Service crisis. We know that the usps can handle a lot of mail, right . We see it every year around the holidays. But these changes at the post office have a lot of people concerned about what this means for mailin ballots. What needs to happen to restore potentially Public Confidence to get things back on track here . Well, i think number one what needs to happen to establish Public Confidence is the president needs to back off on his rhetoric here. He has added to this concern that people have about the mail. But physically it seems as if, you know, its hard to ignore all these anecdotal reports all around the country, whether its slow mail in montana, removed mailboxes in oregon. Theres just a lot of odd stuff happening at an odd time. And ill say this, hallie. I think this is extraordinarily risky for the president on the political front because one of his bases of support is rural america. Well, the Postal Service is extraordinarily not only popular in rural america, its arguably as important of a lifeline as there is in this country. Slowing down the mail is going to hurt him with voters that are normally very, very supportive of him. He is i really think he is chuck, thank you much. Lots to talk about for sure. Well look for more this morning on meet the press when chuck good morning. It is sunday, august 16. Looks ahead to the Democratic National convention with vermont an unusual start to the morning. Vianey arana joins us for your georgia ranks fifth in the number of covid19 cases forecast. What a wacky morning, vianey, nationwide. Back in april the state was one of the first to reopen and for weeks now its been the center of this backandforth over whether or not to require masks. Today that debate enters a new phase. This morning in the face of face coverings, a reversal from georgia governor kemp. He signed an order to enforce citywide mask mandates, something he previously blocked, even taking atlantas mayor to court over it. I dont believe georgians need a mandate to do the right thing. Reporter the order stops short of a statewide mandate and comes with restrictions. Notably, local businesses cannot be forced to comply. I think the best thing that you can do for businesses generally across the state is to require everyone to wear a mask, get virus numbers down. Reporter ben johnson owns five restaurants across metro atlanta. He requires masks in all of them and says he was glad when the city did too. Why is a citywide mandate something that youd like to see . Because it establishes a norm that everyone is out and about with a mask. Reporter nationwide, more cities and schools are struggling to balance reopening with safety. In arizona, a district outside of phoenix is forced to cancel mondays first day of school after a teacher sickout. And for some college students, movein day is giving way to mounting fears. Im really nervous about classes being in person. I think thats a really big risk. I could hear parties happening last night from my apartment. Russian president Vladimir Putin made headlines this week when he announced his country was moving full speed ahead with a coronavirus vaccine, planning to start vaccinations by october. Theres a lot of skepticism in the medical community about how effective the russian vaccine will really be, but it highlights the worldwide race to protect as many people as possible. Still, even when there is a vaccine, how well will it work and will it really come as soon as we think . Molly hunter takes a look in our sunday focus. Reporter as russian president Vladimir Putin boasted to the world that his country had produced a vaccine first, announcing plans to vaccinate 30 million russians in october, scientists from around the world were doubtful. I hope that the russians have actually definitively proven that the vaccine is safe and effective. I seriously doubt that they have done that. Reporter the most likely scenario is not a vaccine this fall or even a guaranteed vaccine thats available everywhere and works for everyone. There is no Silver Bullet at the moment, and there might never be. Reporter theres never been a successful vaccine brought to market like the type moderna and oxford are testing right out of the gate, the two leading candidates. So what if we have to live with the virus, and what does that look like . I think most scientists would tell you that there is a really good chance that we will have a vaccine at some point. What they cant tell you is how many people it will work for, what types of people it will work for, how often theyll need the vaccine, and what elements of daily life will allow them to do. We live with viruses, even lethal viruses. We allow our lives to go on. We dont let it cripple us. So we can live with this is what youre saying . I think one way or the other we will live with this and we will minimize the losses in the process. Reporter now, a lot of the adjustments that weve all been making, including shops and restaurants allowing fewer people inside, spacing people outside, a lot of these adjustments may be here to stay even once we have vaccines. The vaccine dangled as a promise, a get out of jail free card, a savior. Were going to have a vaccine very soon. A vaccine is going to be a Companion Technology that will complement and help improve some of the existing approaches that were using for control. So we cant just stop social distancing when that first vaccine is announced or stop Wearing Masks or decide to just go back to normal . Thats right, especially the first vaccines that were hearing about. Reporter right now there are at least 167 vaccines in development. More than two dozen in human trials, and three in phase three trials. All approved vaccines must be safe and effective, but that doesnt mean they perform the same. The measles vaccine, for example, is 98 effective. But the flu vaccine most years just 40 to 60 effective. For coronavirus, the fda will require the vaccine to be at least 50 effective, and by that they mean prevent or reduce its severity in at least 50 of the people that get it. The bottom line is our first vaccines may not be our best vaccines. Our best vaccines will likely come later. Thats why i dont like using this term race because its extremely misleading. If it is any type of a race, its a several year marathon. Molly joins me now. Molly, so once there is a vaccine, hopefully in record time, right, thats not the end. How many people need to actually get it for it to be effective . Reporter thats right, hallie, a lot. So its not just the vaccine that can save us, its the vaccination. Experts say in order to achieve herd immunity and stop this thing in its tracks, we need to achieve 70 to 80 global coverage. Were talking huge numbers of people that need to be vaccinated. A new Gallup Survey in america suggests that one in three americans wont take the covid vaccine, hallie, even if its approved by the fda and even if its free. And for the scientists that i spoke with, thats what keeps them up at night. Hallie. Satellite radar right now showcasing all those lightning strikes. Weve had several dozen here in the bay area. Its a storm system, fastmoving thunderstorms, i should say, that pack a punch. Were talking about lightning. A couple of viewers reported they could see hail. Im going to zoom this closer because there is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning right now. And that originally was set to expire at 5 13, it got i can definitely tell you that all of us here at nbc bay area including floor director aaron, ive had janelle, a couple of other people text me, have felt the thunder either shake their house, have seen the lightning, the wind and the rain. So definitely were monitoring this very closely. The forecast at 7 00 a. M. See you at 7 00, vianey, thank you so much. As she mentioned, it was a rude awakening, unprecedented thunder and lightning. We want to get right to some video sent in from our viewers. Our first video, wow over downtown san jose. Just take a look at that. Not what you would expect in the bay area. This to the north, over mill valley. I mean, this lightning covered the bay area. This happened just about three hours ago. And from emeryville, the bay and the bay bridge illuminated by multiple lightning strikes. Same goes for santa cruz, what a show over pacific ocean. Exciting for weatherlovers and frightening for little kids like mine, they both woke up crying. Sfo just lit up by that thunder and lightning. It was truly a remarkable way to start this sunday morning. And we are tracking this, Power Outages across the bay area. These are not related to those rolling outages we saw friday night to preserve power. Many of these blackouts came this morning as soon as the lightning hit the bay around 3 30. This pg e map shows the red, more than 5,000 customers without power. Thats san rafael, san mateo, and down south in san jose. The orange 4,099 customers with power and the yellow shows just about 50 to 49 customers without power. Coming up this morning on today in the bay, well tell you about the role the nba played in developing a potentially groundbreaking covid test, coming up at 7 00. Hope to see you then. If you had a good pregnancy, if youre someone who enjoyed being pregnant, i just hope your car flips over. Thats what i wish for you. That is a rather pregnant amy schumer in last years netflix standup special growing and she was. The 39yearold made her name in standup comedy over the course of 15 years on the road with her brash and relatable and aggressively honest act. But it wasnt until 2015 that schumer became a household name when she starred in train wreck and earned herself a best actress golden globe nomination. That same year, she also won an emmy for her Comedy Central sketch show and in 2018 a tony nomination for her leading role in Steve Martins play eteor sh15monthold son, gene, and still putting on new shows. I mean chris and i were talking about it. We havent been apart for, you know, even a night, like a dinner, for so long. We wake up at 6 00 a. M. And, you know, its like this i dont know who i am anymore. My identity is gone. No standup. Especially for somebody whos made her living on the road. It must be wild to be that sedentary. It really is, but it is not as hard as i thought it was going to be. I like staying home a lot. I like also not seeing anyone at all. You know, its like, hmm, maybe ill live like this forever. Keep mincing. Staying at home has meant time in the kitchen for amy schumer and her husband, chris fisher, an acclaimed chef. They are the stars of a cooking show on the food network called amy schumer learns to cook, which is truly homemade. Im a comedian and chris is a chef. And also youre an actress. Thank you. Almost everything you do, you just feel like youre watching you being you, him being him, ignoring you occasionally. It feels like an actual window into your house. Is it . It really, really is. They got the news their family would be growing while schumer was performing standup on a 60show, 42city tour for her netflix special growing. I found out two days ago that im pregnant. Im so excited. In keeping with her honest, unfiltered style its a boy schumer decided to share her life on the road during a very difficult pregnancy for an hbo series called expecting amy. Still working and puking. Chris had to take me to the e. R. Because i couldnt keep anything down. Were there ever shows or moments where youre right before you go out on stage youre sick and then you have to go out and do to come see you . That must have been really hard. It was really, really hard, but i think probably every woman can relate, strangely enough. For me going on stage and doing a show like that, even though its physical and everyone is looking at you, its still my job. And so if youre a teacher or a nurse or anything, if you are really sick and youre pregnant and you still have to work, and no one no one gives you any leeway, they really dont. So gene is what, 15 months now, i think . How has he changed your life, amy . Oh, man, i mean come on. I mean hes just life is so much more beautiful and like the best thing in my life. I dont mean to rush you along, but do you and chris talk about more children at this point . We did ivf. Ivf was really tough on me. I dont think i could ever do ivf again, so i decided that i cant be pregnant ever again. We thought about a surrogate, but i think were going to hold off for right now. Is there part of you as someone whos doing tin rat lie that feels like i dont know, i dont know road like that . No, not for a while. Its not good for you physically or mentally. Im feeling really good about roots being down. Take two. A Welcome Break for schumer after a wild fiveyear rise that began with the hit movie train wreck where she was both writer and star. You never spend the night. What were you blackout drunk . No. Two drinks, three max. Four now that im counting. She also won an emmy that year and published a bestselling memoir the next. Does that feel like a long time ago or does that feel like it just happened . It feels like a long time ago. It really does. It was such a cool time. Has the fame side of it been weird, though . All of a sudden you walk out and paparazzi is outside your amous very quickly. All of a sudden youre like kin woman is supposed to be dressed up. You kind of lose your identity in there until you go actually i am a person and im not all these other things. Youre kind of made to feel like you need to fit into. Its really satisfying to get a grasp of that. I mean it just comes with getting older. Youre out, like maybe shopping. Standing in a store, what do i wear . Who am i . And so now i feel like i know, you know, instead of trying to be something else, im someone who likes sweat pants and tshirts. Thats the one that g the right to vote. The anniversary is happening a week after another historic moment, Kamala Harris chosen by joe biden to be his running mate. With so many powerful women in politics today, it seems unimaginable there was a time when women had to fight even just to get to cast a ballot. But for women of color, the battle for equality is not over, not by a long shot. Rehema ellis has more in our sunday spotlight. Your next Vice President of the united states, Kamala Harris. Reporter another groundbreaking moment in our nations history. I do so mindful of all the heroic and ambitious women before me. Did that amendment give all women an equal opportunity to access and to exercise their right to vote . Unfortunately, it didnt. So we talk about this being a commemoration as opposed to a celebration. That really is why. Reporter black women were relentless in the cause, despite discrimination. And that fight, she says, is still not over. In certain communities, Voter Suppression is real. It just looks different in 2020 than it did 50, 100 years ago. Unfortunately, our ability to have participated in this democracy has involved struggle every step of the way. Reporter representative karen bass knows all too well the roadblocks to progress, but she also knows that given the opportunity, black women show up at the polls in higher numbers than other voting blocs. As voters, how powerful are black women . Extremely go to the back of the bus, people get mad. When people get mad, people act. Women have powered every movement throughout history. Now we finally get to lead it in front of congress, in front of the white house. Our vote is what changes all of that. Reporter for sunday today, rehema ellis, new york. Rehema, thank you. This week we highlight another life well lived. We all know how dangerous the coronavirus has been. Its now killed more than 170,000 people here in the u. S. One baltimore doctor with a rare autoimmune disorder knew those dangers and still put himself on the front lines every day. Walgreens. Everyones place, for healthy and safe. Hey, hallie, i know youve got to do the highs and lows of the week. Im out on asmiesignment or Something Like that. So glad youre week. Id like to submit my high of the week as the return of Hallie Jackson from maternity leave. Were so glad youre back. Dont worry, you didnt miss anything in the last several months. Welcome back, hallie. Coming. Hat is so great. Willie, thank you so much. It is great to be back with everybody. Willie taking a break from the shaving, i see, this week as well. Some muchdeserved time off. Our highs and lows of the week for everybody. Our first high goes to the Police Officer who looked more like a super hero as she raced to save a man in a wheelchair seconds before a train goes gby. All of this caught on her body camera in a clip that has rocketed around the country. Theres a male stuck on the tracks. Trying to get him out. Can you get it . Get him, get him, get him, get him. So heres the back story. The officer was on patrol in lodi, california, when she happened to see that 66yearold man stuck in his electric wheelchair. The entire time between her bolting from her car, pulling the man from his chair and the train plowing through was just 15 seconds. The man hurt his leg, but is in the hospital in stable condition. Her Department Shared the moment online, praising the 14year police veteran for her heroism and for risking her own life to save another. I honestly dont think i did special. I just did what i felt that anybody in my situation would have done. Not just amazing video, but an amazing person as well. Our first low goes to yet another example of just how weird live sports are getting in the year 2020, right . My hometown Washington Nationals were up against the Baltimore Orioles in d. C. Last sunday when a storm rolled through in the sixth inning delaying the game. So the nats ground crew jumped into action to try to protect the field. Well, they jumped, but the action, well, just watch. They lost momentum. Come on you got this. Yeah, that tarp, not unrolling smoothly at all. Yeah. 20 minutes of that. 20 minutes. At one point they even tried to roll the tarp back off of the infield to fix things. Not that it helped much. That poor crew. You know after it went viral someone would have to give it the classic benny hill treatment. And sure enough, somebody did. By the time the grounds crew figured this thing out, the rain had stopped, but the field was completely soaked so the game ended up postponed entirely. Honestly there is some sort of 2020 metaphor in there. Our next high is a sweet moment from inside the nba bubble where players have been quarantined since july. Usually before an nba game youre going to hear a very excited announcer with a very deep baritone announcing the players. But on tuesday, the phoenix suns heard from someone else. Their families introducing them. At center, 611 in arizona, number 22, deandre aydon. At forward, 68 from the university of north carolina, number 23, cam johnson. Go cam remember, the players have not been able to be with their families for more than a month which explains why this is such a lovely surprise for these guys when they announced the starting lineup. Everybody loved it. Steph curry, kyle lowry tweeting about it, even lebron james who called it amazing, giving a shoutout to the suns for that and adding, i miss my family. Our final low goes to the super chill, perhaps overly super chill reaction one family had to an unexpected visitor at their summer picnic last week. Look at this. The group was eating lunch outside their cabin in deep creek, maryland, when a huge black bear decided to crash the party. He sits down, makes himself at home, helps himself to the meal. One guy you see trying to take selfies with the bear, another gives him a Peanut Butter sandwich. Basically everything youre taught not to do around a wild animal. The Property Owner says the same bear shows up pretty regularly and doesnt bother anybody. Heres your friendly weekly reminder, you should never do this, even if its yogi bear this, even if its yogi bear carrying a picnic everyday its agetting closer going faster than a rollercoaster love like yours will surely come my way ahey, aheyhey music playing love like yours will surely come my way
