Pants and thats when it fell to the seat. Reporter thats when he started panicking. The first thought in your mind what was in that needle. About two minutes later i decided to check on the train, i pulled down my pants on the train and basically checked and there was a puncture. Reporter hew took this picture of the wound and called 911. He didnt want to leave the needle unattended and wanted to make sure police picked it up to get tested. There was definitely like some residue on the inside so it was definitely used. It wasnt like a brand new needle. It wasnt capped. Reporter but police and paramedics met him on the west oakland station. They snapped pictures and bagged the needle as evidence. He later had his blood drawn at kaiser to test for viruses. I asked b. A. R. T. If they would get the needle tested and a spokesperson wrote back it depends on the blood test and theyre pulling video to determine what happened prior to their contact with marcel. Now hes worried about longterm Health Problems if that needle was carrying something dangerous. 2, 3, 6 months from now are i still have to be tested for those things because those things dont show up overnight. Jeff, weve been waiting for that summer heat wave and here it is. Reporter yeah, weve had pretty easy so far this summer, but hot for some places tomorrow to get outside. I wanted to start off with a look at our temperatures today and how that compared to records. And you can see we did get up to those 100s. Concord, 102, which will be a new record when thats certified. Livermore not good enough for a record. You had to get all the way up to 110 today. And downtown San Francisco at 78. So here is the deal. This is prolonged event for us. From tomorrow into next wednesday were going to see upper 90s and low 100s. So thats why we do have this excessive heat warning here for the inland valleys in this orange to red color over salono, contra costa, alameda and santa clara counties specifically for tomorrow most critical where we will see temperatures as high as 106 to 108 degrees. It is that time to make sure to drink plenty of water and check on those elderly neighbors especially without airconditioning. We also have humidity moving in from the south. You felt it today. Its producing some thunderstorms. You can see the radar layer on here but notice this purple layer. Thats the moisture and the midlayers of the atmosphere. Its the humidity youre all feeling out there. Its another snapshot way to look at it. No storms right now for us, but we are monitoring that and anything that gets near us we will let you know about that. Now with these thunderstorms and the heat this will increase our fire danger to some of the highest levels weve seen over the past several months. Today we had a burn index of 80. That is high. Tomorrow it goes up to 100. Now, the good news in all of this i do not do not see a major wind event for us so, yes, it will be hot. Fire danger will be increased but thankfully no marriage winds right now, raj. Well take a look at those 106 to 108 temperatures in about 15 minutes. Very good graphics there. Explains a lot to us. So we have high temperatures, fire danger possibly and that threat of lightening. Today cal fires heletech crews went over. Over the years weve had many lightening fires in the south bay. One of the biggest ones was the whitehurst fire in 2008 that scorched almost a thousand acres. We reviewed the lightening activity levels and what is predicted to possibly happen and what we might be faced with. Cal fire has also sent resources from santa clara and alameda counties to the lake fire down near l. A. And heres why. The lake fire continues to grow. Its charred more than 10,000 acres. It started yesterday afternoon near lake hughes in the Angeles National forest. There are no reports of any injuries but a number of people have had to evacuate their homes. A change of plan at stanford. The campus will remain empty. In an email to students today campus leaders said most inperson classes have been switched to remote instruction, and housing will only be offered to people in special circumstances. Now, if allowed freshman, sophomore and transfer students will be allowed back for the winter quarter, and juniors and seniors will have to wait until the spring quarter to come back to campus. Well, as parents many of us we get it. Distance learning is challenging. Some parents are going an extra step here. They are suing Governor Newsom for keeping the campuses closed. Today they spoke about it publicly for the first time. Lets bring in janelle wang, and do they have a legal standing here and whats the states response . Well, they say, yes. The state says no. These parents want to have the choice to be able to return to class in person for inperson instruction and not have to state tell them yes or no. So this case goes to court on monday. A judge will decide whether or not to grant a temporary restraining order against Governor Newsoms order which says schools must start off with Distance Learning if they are in a county on the state watch list. The center for american liberty which is headed by a leader ina has filed this lawsuit on behalf of these groups of parents. Many from southern california. Some who spoke on todays virtual News Conference says Distance Learning has hurt their kids emotionally and academically. Theyve already seen the effects after the end of last school year and want districts to have the choice whether to hold inperson classes. The district and schools say people will want to return, and thats what this lawsuit is saying is give districts the choice. Dont just lump them in. Give them the choice to take the steps necessary to make parents, staff and the community feel safe to return to school. Reporter we spoke to state superintendent tony therman exclusively this morning. This was before we knew about todays News Conference, but he did speak to us about this upcoming year in these uncertain times. Theres no question this is the biggest challenge weve ever experienced in our lifetime, but as it relates to ensuring kids still get a quality education there are ways we can do that. Again, i recommend our parents, our students, our teachers this is hard but everyones leaning in and we can do this and keep our kids safe and ensure they get a good education. He says the state is discussing child care pods which will provide child care for kids who have working parents. It would have to be in districts, though, that arent on californias watch list. As for the lawsuit as i mentioned it goes to court on monday. The governor responded to this lawsuit when it was first filed last month saying science drives the states decision when it comes to schools reopening, and it has the authority to make these decisions whether the districts start off with Distance Learning or inclass learning. So were going to see on monday what the judge might rule. We will follow that case very closely. Heres something we havent heard until now. One of the poorest districts in the state says Distance Learning is a blessing in disguise. Now every student is connected to the internet at home. Nbc bay areas daymond trajillo in san jose with more. Reporter many of his students were being left behind in access to tech, but now the district says theyre about to even the playing field. The park is a summer relief for the cardoza family. At home theyd have to deal with no computers, no internet. She says they have to use up expensive data on their cellphones to get online and downloading apps gets expensive and is time consuming. I think that was a great wake up call for all of us as leaders. Reporter the School Superintendent says 1 in 10 of her students does not have home internet. And now that Virtual Learning is mandatory the district had four months to make sure every student had an internet hot spot and either a chrome book or ipad at home. It may be Virtual Learning may be the best thing that ever happened to us. Reporter the technology was four years in the making. Now thanks to city and county grants the district says it will be on par with other more affluent districts. Today families with tech issues on their new laptops were able to bring them into schools to get their questions answered. It was pretty sweet, too. It was nice for them to do stuff at home. A 10yearold girl from yemen is expected to land at sfo this evening after being stranded in egypt without her family. Last month her family fled wor attorney yemen. The familys attorneys said her papers never arrived and if the family had stayed they would have been at risk of losing their visas. So they left for San Francisco without their child. The embassy recently got permission to issue the girl a visa. Her family says they are so grateful for all the support. Well, admit it theres a good chance you do this, right, try to avoid touching that pedestrian button when you cross the street. I like it a lot and its really fancy i guess. Reporter the next step for the county is to identify the 25 busiest intersections and install the hands free devices there. Its a 10year plan aimed at creating new musical works from black composers. Its called the emerging black composers project. Winning composers will each receive a 15,000 commissioning fee and mentorship from three wellknown bay area music directors. Besides the heat im sure you felt it today, the humidity felt a bit like the east coast today and i wanted to show you where thats coming from. We talked about it all week long leading up to today. We have this humid air moving in from the south. Theres the radar overlay on top, but this purple color here, thats the moisture in the midlevels of the atmosphere, and this is all moving up into the bay area, and its an indication of that more humid air that were seeing right now. So well keep a slight chance of thunderstorms for us as we head through tonight and also tomorrow morning. So as we move into the forecast its all about this area of hot, high pressure. Thats whats producing the heat, and its going to be a prolonged event for us. Right now our heat and warning starts from tomorrow all the way through next wednesdays forecast. Thats where the inland valleys will range anywhere from 95 to 105 degrees inland. So youve got to remember to take plenty of breaks outside and drink lots of water. So as you move in through tomorrow morning its pretty simple. With that hot air in place temperatures are going to start off warmer merchandise i have 75 in the south bay, 73 in the peninsula, trivalley at 77. Again, that is your morning forecast. For the east bay, 76. San francisco, a little bit cooler with some fog near the immediate coastline, and 67 degrees and the north bay at 72. Now for my daytime highs this again may be too hot for you to handle. Down here in the south bay got you up to 106 in gilroy. East san jose, 102. Even hotter over to the east bay. We are close to some record setting heat and even some alltime records. 108 in livermore, 109 in antioch, 107 in concord. Right through the peninsula well get close to 100 here in redwood city at 97. San francisco also has some 80s tomorrow. This rarely happens this time of year. Weve had a lot of fog so youre kind of thawing out tomorrow. 87 in the mission, 80 for the marina. 102 sonoma, 104 novato and also 104 in clear lake. It will be a prolonged event. San francisco warmest day tomorrow and then well drop off into the 70s as we head through the next seven days. For the inland valleys warmest day also is for tomorrow. 106 degrees, slight chance of a thunderstorm, and then well see it drop albeit it stays hot as we head through the next several days with upper 90s and also low 100s. The pavement was 105 degrees and with the sunsetting were now down to 107 for the pavement so its a little bit better, but tomorrow we could be 140, 150 for that pavement whereby so watch out for the kids and pets if you have to go outside tomorrow in some of those hottest cities.
