Pg e is preparing for power shut off this fire season, but they vow that this year will be different. California Public Utilities commission and pg e will hold a meeting this morning on the companys preparedness for the upcoming shut off. The press democrat report says pg e will cut the number of customers to lose power down by onethird because it made smaller sectors in the electrical grid. Many states grappling with covid cases and businesses struggling to stay afloat, the medical community is forging ahead on their search for a vaccine. Today in the bay Cierra Johnson is live in San Francisco to explain where researchers are in that search. Cierra, how can they be a part of it . Yeah, definitely. Were going to have more information and as those researchers are working to find that vaccine that uses that type of technaology, that new Type O Technology theyre looking for a group of people to go forward with the study. Africanamericans and latinos this call for participants being made here in california, as well, as oregon. Thousands of kaiser patients are being asked to take part in the study from pfizer and a german company. That Hospital System is looking for 1,400 participants in both states and hoping to have a large threephase study to make sure that drug is safe. Now, take a listen to why researchers say this vaccine is different from others in the way it works. And that includes dna vaccines which you may have also heard about. This is a new technology for vaccines. There are no currently licensed vaccines developed using this technology. Researchers say those who take part in the study will either be given a placebo or that vaccine and monitored for two years. The study has already begun enrolling participants in santa clara. Researchers say if this study is successful, it will be available for distribution pretty quickly and as i mentioned, theyre looking for the africanamerican and latino participants. A new stanford study that is shining light on why covid19 actually affects people in different ways. In sunnyvale a family there says they all contracted the virus. But they all had different symptoms. Diego was hospitalized for a week. His wife and two kids recovered at home. Doctors at Stanford Research why Family Members who contract the same strain of the virus have varying symptoms and theydiscoi. Bideteies and hypertension and age can all effects on the disease severity. Researchers say it will still take more studies to determine why some patients get sicker than others. As hospitalizations go down in the south bay, testing sites are going up. A new testing site opening today in Santa Clara County. This is all part of the countys rotating popup site. It will be at the Los Altos Youth Center in cupertino. You will need an appointment to get tested. Oakland School Leaders and teachers have come to a tentative agreement of what the new school year will look like. Students began Distance Learning on monday and both sides settled on terms that offer teachers flexibility and students have live interaction but exact details are still being fine tuned. The agreement comes following a month of negotiations between the two sides. San Francisco State university is making it easier for students to transfer after a decline in enrollment. According to the chronicle the university lost about 2,000 students this year because of the pandemic. The transfer students were required to be at Community College for two years, not any more. But students need to show that they have taken the basic math and writing classes. S. A. T. Scores are not required. On friday, San Francisco Police Officers will vote on a new contract agreement that includes delayed raises. The San Francisco examiner spoke to the San Francisco Police Officers Association President and called the new contract a, quote, sacrifice. The deal calls for officers to get a new 6 pay hike over two years starting in 2020. In turn, a 3 pay raise the office is expected to get next year would be delayed until june of 2022. That hike has already been pushed back by six months because of the pandemic. Well, a protest is set for this morning as thousands of San Francisco renters fight to try to make it in the bay. Now, we have been reporting that the city is looking to end an emergency rule on evictions. This morning, supporters of the Eviction Moratorium plan to protest in front of the state building on golden gate avenue. Back in april, you might remember the District Council voted to ban courts from prosecuting eviction cases from people who couldnt pay their rent because of the pandemic. Now the council is looking to reinstate that rule. Well, new details this morning. A new warning to tourists going to lake tahoe. Quote, dont trash our home. Lake tahoe residents say theyre fed up with people coming in droves to visit the area and possibly spreading covid19. Post on facebook is going viral of a man saying the number of tours are continuing to rise and people are trashing beaches and the city isnt doing anything so locals are planning to protest this weekend demanding that the area prohibit tourists from there. Well also start to see a surge in clouds later on this evening and thats the humidity arriving. That humidity is going to make that heat oppressive for tomorrow. Talking about the heat up all week. Is it finally here . It is getting here, yes. We are going to have some hotter temperatures today. As we start out with a clear morning taking a live look outside in walnut creek. A lot of sunshine in our forecast. Now, although we have a nice comfortable start to our morning, if youre about to head out from antioch, low 60s but look at later this morning at 10 00, were rolling the windows down but then at noon were conditioning as temperatures reach into the upper 80s. Lets go through all of our microclimates and look at our high temperatures. For today up to 93 in los gatos and gilroy reaching 98 degrees and you get over towards the inland east bay and triple digits here with a high in danville reaching 100 degrees and 101 today in antioch. For Half Moon Bay were in the mid 60s today. Palo alto reaching 87 degrees and today well reach 70 on the embarcadero and north bay high temperatures from 66 in point reyes to 103 today in ukiah. Were going to start to feel that heat today, but check out what is happening farther to the south. Look at all the rain and even some lightning strikes off the coast. This is all happening because of the remnants of a tropical system that has weakened and it is actually bringing rain to parts of Southern California. Now, as it gets closer to the bay area, a lot of that rain falls apart. But were going to feel a surge in humidity starting late this evening and then continue throughout the day tomorrow. And its also going to make it feel very muggy and combine it with these temperatures. So look at this. Were up to 104 degrees for our inland areas tomorrow. Its still going to be hot on saturday, but at least the humidity will start to come down and this heat continues into next week. Our coastal areas in San Francisco will be in the 70s and even some low 80s here. As we head over to you, mike, how is it looking right now for the commute . Well, breaking news, recovering this morning, a fast moving fire burning dangerously close to homes in Southern California. We have live pictures here of the lake fire, it is burning near Santa Clarita north of los angeles. The fire exploded from 400 acres to an estimated 10,000 acres just after a couple of hours, a very dry conditions. Hundreds of homes, in fact, have been evacuated. Officials set up a shelter for people in parking lots, but theyre actually telling them to shelter in their cars at this point. Firefighters may have a chance to make some progress today because theyre expecting some cooler temperatures, but theyve got to act fast and do what they can do as they battle this fire because the heat wave is expected to start back up on friday. Well back here at home, you may have more dining, workout and personal care options in san jose. This as the city looks to expand the outdoor Space Available for businesses to serve clients outside. This is the parking lot behind the famed willow glen downtown area, lincoln avenue. This is one of the first spots that will open up for expanded services outside for any business that wants to apply for a permit. Now, lots of parking lots like this one and other open areas will be available to any business that is within a quarter mile of here. And that is also a large number of restaurants, hair salons, nail salons, gyms and other personal training studios along with retail businesses. No doubt, there will be costs associated with doing business outside, but paying the city a permit fee will be one of them. Were waiving all the fees for doing it and accelerating the process to help businesses stay open and really to survive. So here are all the areas now available under san joses new expanded al fresco plan. All cityowned properties. Downtown plazas and all city parks that are bigger than an acre and surface parking lots like the one were in this morning and private parking lots also available and streets where restaurants are already serving customers outside. One salon said she cant offer favorite services outside like color and blowouts and some companies are rolling back their street closures because they found they werent getting the boost that they were expecting because with limited parking, people just werent showing up. 2,000 San Francisco businesses list themselves on the review site as closed permanently. President trump has said several times that he wants to go beyond his executive order to suspend payroll taxes and make them permanent. I cant stress this enough under the Current System if it goes through, you will owe these taxes just not on your paycheck. As for the payroll taxes the problem with making the cut permanent they are what pay for your Social Security. The president says he wants to change it so that the general fund, the taxpayers pay for it. When we win the election when i win the election im going to completely and totally forgive all the third payroll taxes without in any way, shape or form hurting Social Security. That money will come from the general fund. Changing or even talking about changing Social Security has forever been considered a third rail in american politics. Thank you very much, scott. We have some new details. The remains of several military members have now been recovered after that big training mishap that happened in Southern California. Last month 15 marines and a navy sailor were doing a water Training Exercise at San Clemente Island near san diego. Their water vehicle started filling with water. Eight marines were rescued but seven of them and the navy sailor were lost at sea. The remains are now at a base in delaware. One Family Member says even though it is a sad occasion, its a relief to have answers. Its more of a relief and its not like, you know, were wondering where hes at. We know now for sure we have answers and, obviously, its not the answer that we wanted but, you know, its very comforting to know we have those answers. The military says its still investigating the cause of that accident. Los angeles is working to develop more rapid athome covid19 testing. The citys mayor says hes now converted a National Coalition to accelerate that procedure. The hope is to identify where outbreaks are and try to get them under control. Youre watching today in the bay. On friday, San Francisco Police Officers will vote on a new contract agreement that includes delayed raises. The San Francisco examiner the Association President who calls the new contract a quote, sacrifice. The deal calls for officers to get a new 6 pay hike in two years starting in 2022. In turn, a 3 pay raise that officers are expected to get next year will be delayed until june of 2022. That hike has already been pushed back by six months because of the pandemic. Well, back home this morning, a sick hyena from the oakland zoo is reportedly doing well thanks to veterinarians in redwood city who stepped up to help for free. Now, want to show you tusker a spotted hyena. Hes been playing happily in this video but recently he kind of started behaving differently and zoo staff didnt really know why. He was brought to the states Veterinary Center in redwood city. Doctors there offered to give him an mri, something that would usually cost thousands of dollars and they did it for free.
