Seth but those are all bad things he didnt say hes done good things for black people. He just said no one has done more, and hes right no one has done more for black americans, to make our lives worse. Jeff, wonderful to see you how are you . Its very wonderful to see you, seth. I am good, everything considered, you know my heart goes out to all those who are not so fortunate, of course seth but you are but now, were okay im here with my family in england. Were shooting that Jurassic World movie and theyve put their heart and soul into the protocols, and were safe and having a creative blast, you know. Seth thats really nice. You were one of the first productions to go back, the new Jurassic Park film and i think one of the things that was nice, was not just the safety protocols you were talking about, but this is the first time that you and sam neill and laura dern have been together for 30 years, correct . Yes, yes, thats right. Our characters, certainly. Oh, weve been in touch here and there. Seth yeah. But, thats right our characters, sam neills character and laura dern, were back together. I have a piano in my room and charlie is taking piano lessons, had been, but im taking him through not only do i do my piano homework, but taking him through his suzuki lesson every day. Hes proceeding today. Seth and now tell me, how young were you when you started . When you got your first lesson i think as i remembered, tenish or nineish, or tenish. Hes, for heavens sakes, five hes way ahead of me, not to mention the bicycle. I think around the same time, ten. I started get on the bike. Hes whizzing around, you know seth and is he taking the piano . Do you feel like he has a natural skill for it well, who knows i dont think hes any mozart, but theres no indication of that yet but hes kind of like me, disciplined. I mix around all the time and he sees me playing all the time, so he likes to check in we go through the stuff and ill be darned if he isnt, you know, playing a bunch of stuff you know, its thrilling for me. Seth thats amazing. Its sometimes maddening for me too im very kind of, around piano, i get kind of, you know, im not like the father in shine im not, you know, a maniac. Im not going to but im, you know, focused now. I want to be focused, a little tough, but you know, i think its good. Hes taking to it. Yeah, hes doing okay. The other one the other one is taking a little lessons river is taking lessons, horrible, horrible he comes in and all im supposed to do is if he doesnt do it, which he doesnt, is take his fingers like a puppet and push them against the thing i play Twinkle Twinkle Little star every day with his right hand, his left hand, as hes moaning and stuff, and i just kind of do it. [ laughter ] you have to say, do it quick, quick as you can. Because afterwards, we give him gummy bears. So thats a seth oh, well, there you go. You have to reward them somehowe been doing this show you know, weve done more than a first person to reference the father in shine. And i really appreciate because i feel like thats a call to a reference weve lost over the years. Oh, yeah. But they were new, they were Ground Breaking and on an occasion, there was trex that was life size that when you went into the sound stage they said, and dont go anywhere near it because it can get kind of morbid and were still trying to figure out how to operate it. Hey, the world according to Jeff Goldblum. We talked about it last time here, this is you exploring topics that you were not an expert in before an episode would take them into account i know you had to cut short your Second Season, but are there things while youve been in quarantine that you thought, oh, id really like to moving on, id love to explore this . Yes were all talking. We were excited about doing it we love what we did the first time, and sort of coincidentally, the theme became, the first season, objects that we all love and that bring us together around which we have a connection you know, rvs and, you know, barbecues and denim and jewelry and cosmetics and pools and all that so were sort of set off in an area that might adapt to the new changing and changed world, but were also thinking, feverishly, about what could even more relevantly, and interestingly be talked about this year we had started with fireworks. Which was another thing that, you know, had a long history in science and future and brings people together and all that seth sure. And it sort of set us off into left field areas like people who live in the darkest places, neighborhoods in america so that they can see at night. And they all have great big telescopes in their backyard and then we talked to an astronaut whod been up there and seen the planet from afar and been close to the stars because we thought that fireworks were possibly depictions, another sort of ersatz way of, you know, finding the mystery, majesty and poetry and awesomeness of where we are in the universe. All that kind of stuff, and were trying to in the Second Season in this vein, kind of expand our intellectual substance and all that we have people on the team to help us do that. Not me, you know, im an expert in nothing but im an eager learner seth you mentioned rvs which, you know, rvs are having a real hot moment right now. You were sort of at the forefront of this because now you couldnt get an rv if you tried because this is the safest way, i guess, to have a vacation with your family right now im just learning that, yes ople who put them all went to together, these stateoftheart things, and talked about the history of it. But and went to the family who just the dad had taken off work and they all went across the country you know and were finding a beautiful time together, but now that this last period of time, this last unfortunate period of time has befallen us, yeah. I guess people i hadnt thought of it that much. Yeah, they get it. Its a way that you can, you know, clean up your own area you dont have to rely on other peoples bathrooms and stuff, sleep in your own bed but not be cooped up, get the family under control. [ laughter ] keep them seth have you and move around. Seth did it appeal to you when you did your episode about it did you think, oh, this is something the goldblums should do . Well, im a kind of im not a big camper and it feels a little adjacent mentally, camping. Seth yeah, i agree with that, i agree with that. Yeah, yeah. Although, theyre very nice. We met nice people and its you know, if i could clone myself and live in parallel universes, yeah, part of me, id love to do what Albert Brooks just go on the road again like they do and, you know. Seth yeah, thats true once again, a reference for the teens, Albert Brooks lost in america. A movie that did not really serve as great advertisement for as city People Like Us joining the camping lifestyle. No, no. cause nowadays no, you and i are both, you know, urbane seth yes authentic and connected to the earth. Seth yes i tried to yeah, i tried to have and you do. You stride the earth in seven league boots like a colossus seth hey, i want to ask before we go, you know, we have a very polarizing addition to the show since we started doing them in this location, which is the sea captain. Are you pro or anti the sea captain . Heres what i think, honestly i love him i love him in the set just aesthetically. I like that particular picture that operation is a little like, you know, like clutch cargo. Seth yeah. You know. Seth i think would definitely owe a debt of gratitude to clutch cargo. Yes. Heres my conversation with annie murphy hi, annie. How are you . Hi, seth. I am doing just fine how are you doing . Seth im doing well. Its really nice to meet you i wish it was in person. But i was talking to your costar dan levy and he was saying that really, its the most fitting outcome that the year Schitts Creek gets 15 nominations it will be a virtual emmys because were in the middle of a pandemic precisely i couldnt agree with him more [ laughter ] seth it must have been, you know, your show took this, i feel like had this crazy arc isnt even the right word because it kept going up which is, it was a show not a lot of people saw and then it was this building sort of cult feeling about it and then all of a sudden, in its final year, its an emmy darling what a fun run that must have been for you its been so wild because when we started out, it was really just this little show on the cbc in canada and we shot, you know, in toronto and then we go up north 45 minutes and shoot in this little town called goodwood, ontario. [ laughter ] seth thats hilarious. Hold on to that for a second. So yeah, it felt really small and insular. And so to have it be where it is now is, its pretty wonderful. Seth is it true that you felt nostalgic and make a trip back to goodwood recently . Yep, yep. [ laughter ]inest moment, i would say. I was getting a little stir crazy and nostalgic, and i was like, i want to take a little drive. Im go to go to goodwood and they have these, theres a bakery in goodwood called anninas, which is the best bakery and they have do you guys have butter tarts in america . Seth no, ive never heard of a butter tart. Okay, a butter tart is just that, a butter tart, but with brown sugar. And anyway, its delicious seth yeah. So i was like, im going to go get a butter tart and walk around and so i did that, and i was strolling around the streets of goodwood, and this car of ladies pulls up to me and theyre like, alexis . I was like [ laughter ] what are you doing here . Like they have because goodwood, i guess, has become a bit of a hot spot for tourists now. Seth sure. But they had driven three hours to come and take pictures of goodwood and there i was just wandering the streets like a maniac and then literally, three days later, the show Schitts Creek posted on socials. Please, people, stop going to goodwood there is a pandemic. Everyone needs to calm. And i was like [ laughter ] seth it is really funny because of course the last i mean, you might expect to see, like, an annie lookalike that the town hired for the purpose of tourists, but to get the real thing just wandering around. [ laughter ] now i think that they think that i just go there every day just to wait for people to come and take my picture. Seth to recognize you, sure. This is Something Else thats a little bit embarrassing, but again, this is something you made the mistake of sharing with the world, which is that when you found out you were nominated for an emmy, this is going around, you choked on bacon. [ laughter ] which is, by the way, the way i would imagine all canadian actors finding out about emmy nominations, just choking on bacon. [ laughter ] it was one of the things that like as i was saying it, i was like, dont say this out loud to somebody but yeah, i was sitting on the floor eating pancakes, as one does [ laughter ] got the news and inhaled or exhaled in a poor way and yeah, and thats how i rung in the news was choking on bacon. [ laughter ] seth what, i cant even imagine what it was like to have both comedy royalty and Canadian Royalty in eugene levy and Catherine Ohara as your parents. What was it like when you first started working with them . I mean, obviously, the scripts are so funny, but you know, they elevated so much by being the kind of performers they were was it intimidating or was it just amazing from the start . Uh, both. Seth yeah. Im going to say both they are they have been my idols for so many years and when i found out i got the job, because i hadnt worked for so long, teemed with the fact that like, it was my dream job that i booked i was kind of floating on this high that i had a job and i was going to be working with eugene and catherine, but i didnt really realize until a couple of days before when a friend was like, hey, you have to now act with eugene levy and chatherine ohara. [ laughter ] and i was like, oh, no. Oh, no, no, no. And it really dawned on me and i had a bit of a a bit of moment and was terrified going in the first day i was so nervous but luckily, dan levy was equally green and he was nervous too. And so we kind of went in trembling together and got the first few takes out of the way and then eugene and catherine being who they are, it never felt like we were the new inexperienced kids that we were. It was so warm and awesome and they couldnt have been more lovely so seth i was talking to dan about this you know, six years ago, he and euge premiere of Schitts Creek and was the choice that they had made with the name and it was really fun one, they obviously, you know, the secrets out they have a very loving father son relationship, but you actually in the city doing press and ive heard that you actually went back you went to their hotel room to watch it air, which is probably pretty late at night. I did, and it was i can stay up late [ laughter ] yeah, so that was one of my very first of many, but very first moments of what is my life right now. Because i was in new york city for press and they put us up at the Waldorf Hotel and wed just gone out for this beautiful steak dinner and there was a snowstorm. And i was like, i was crawling into bed and i got a call from dan being like, were going to watch seth meyers. Come on up and give me your room number. And so, i pulled on my crumpled clothes and went up. [ laughter ] and it was like an impressive number in the hotel. And so i went up to the room, and knocked on the door and martin short, dressed in a tuxedo, opens the door and goes with a tray of champagne and goes, annie murphy and i was like, what . And i proceeded to go into martin shorts hotel room at the waldorf and watch my friends, seth myers and it was a very, very i think its like a flash before my eyes while im dying moment seth it also seems very cool and i think one of the most special things about all the nominations is that both eugene and dan got nominated and i can only imagine how proud it made eugene you know, hes got two kids in the cast as well is it true that he just delights in watching his children perform . Couldnt be more delighted watching his kids perform. It is, that is actually one of the things that im going to miss the very most about shooting is watching eugene watch sarah and dan. Because he stands he goes, first of all, he goes to get snacks and then he stands behind the monitor and just watches them act and hes much like a dance mom s very sad when theyre sad and happy when theyre happy [ laughter ] like when its going on, all of the crew kind of nudge each other and we all take great pleasure in watching him watch them seth it is fully adorable. And i want to ask about catherine. She made so many wonderful choices in her delivery and diction. Was there a certain word of hers that you enjoyed hearing the most over the course of the six seasons . Yeah, and its not the word you would expect because its not one of the flowery, you know, pieces of vocabulary that she chooses. But she was able to make the word how, just the word how, how, three syllables it went from how to how. [ laughter ] and it blew my mind. It blew my mind. Shes a miracle. Seth yeah well, you were very lucky to be that proximity to greatness its very rare in this game, and its really awesome that the emmy voters recognized how across the board wonderful you all were on that show. And congratulations, annie thank you thanks, seth it was really nice to meet you seth it was the same here. Seth our next guest is an emmy nominated writer and comedian whose work you know from saturday night live. Her standup special sam jay 3 00 in the morning is available on netflix now heres my conversation with sam jay. Hi, sam, how are you hey, seth, whats going on . How are you . Seth im doing great i want to talk about your special which i loved, but i also want to talk about when we collaborated, i guess you could say. When i hosted snl, you and Gary Richardson wrote a sketch for me do you want to describe the premise to everyone . Well, the premise of the sketch was that you were like an executive for a company and you had dressed up like cardi b. For halloween but all you did think. And Everything Else was just a mans business suit, so you didnt really commit to the costume. And then you got very frustrated with your employees because they didnt recognize who you were. [ laughter ] seth it was a lot of fun, and it was a very natural conclusion as to what to write for seth meyers. I appreciate it was definitely one of those ones where we were into the sketch, and were like in the first blocking, i was like, gary, i dont know if seth wants to do this. [ laughter ] seth no, no. I swear, i was all in. [ laughter ] i was all in if anything i dont know if he likes this seth i think you were up against my limitations as a performer if anything. So you youre a writer on the show, but you i didnt realize that you had auditioned. Thats how they that they basically found you to join the staff. What did you audition with when you just standup thats all i had so i just went up and just did my jokes which was very nervewracking because thats such a weird space to do just straight comedy in seth sure. Not that theres worse space to do anything in but particularly, like, comedy because everyone is just off in a corner, like, staring at you, you know seth yeah, its definitely one of the hardest rooms ive ever been in and i can imagine how it would be particularly tough for standup where youre used to doing it for an audience yeah, or at least people that are willing to react like give you a reaction [ light laughter ] seth its a pretty chilly room so sam, it was interesting because, again i you know, i met you at snl, and being a writer at snl oftentimes, youre trying to figure out, like, whats the voice i can write for this host this week or how do i find the right thing for this person to say. And i loved watching your special because obviously, that is naturally your voice. You know, it would have been nothing in that special would have worked in anyone elses you know, for anyone but you so how what is the difference like when youre trying to write for snl and write for standup at the same time i mean, i think its just, you have to learn how to write for other voices, really, and also kind of like start to watch the cast and really figure out what they like and what type of things they really thrive in so, its way more collaborative and like, standup, which is all, like, in a corner being cynical, you know, with ourselves. Seth yeah. And then, like, improvs so happy. One, its just such a happier space. And sometimes, that was definitely offputting at first. I was just like, i dont get why everyone is so joyous. And then, its also just learning how to write for four and five different people and truly cast a piece, and choose the right people for the right things seth of course, the nice difference is, i feel like after watching your special, i have a far better sense of who you are. I feel like i know you now, which is, you know again, i think what the best standup specials do. You called it 3 00 in the morning. Why did you come up with that title . I just really felt like thats where the special got made i just felt like thats when i was up at the cellar arguing with Keith Robinson about, you know, whos better, whitney or beyonce or just having some, like, mindless comic fight that would inform a joke or an idea or it when it was up when my mind was stewing on things or when i was arguing with my girl for being out too late at the cellar, you know, so it just kind of felt to me, like thats where all the sweat equity happened and i didnt want to call it, like, shes upset or something, you know seth right i wanted to think of something that felt natural and good and really embodied what the special was for me seth it also you know obviously im gonna assume you didnt shoot it at 3 00 in the morning but it really has this nice look and feel to it that i think captures the idea of the kind of conversations and kind of things you say when youre with a group of people you feel comfortable with that late in the night. Yeah, that was also, like, im glad you picked that up because that was a part of my genius you know what im saying [ laughter ] but that was definitely, like, something that i wanted people to feel i wanted it to have that old, like red fox special feel like, this is late night thing and youre probably going to hear some things that you probably dont want to be playing in the day. But like, were up, were drinking, and its grown folk talk you know what i mean i just i definitely wanted it to feel like that. Seth one of the cool things about snl is you get to work with your heroes, sometimes on things that are specifically the reason theyre your heroes i remember getting to work on waynes world with mike myers and dana carvey and pinching myself the whole time. When eddie murphy came back, you got to work with him on velvet jones what was that like it was surreal, because it definitely was one of those relationships where i used to watch the best of Eddie Murphy Snl tape every day for like a whole summer, and i would just watch those sketches over and over and velvet jones was definitely one that stood out to me and always made me laugh. So when i got when i was able to do that and like, the original writers that came with eddie to, you know, help him that week and when they were even like, yeah, this is super funny. It just felt like a weird validation of like, oh, im like a good super fan. [ laughter ] seth yeah, absolutely. When you realized, look, you know im a fan, but at least im the right kind of fan because i understood what was funny about you. Yeah, exactly and so that felt that felt amazing. Seth it was such a fantastic week to watch because its weird how i just forgot the best thing about eddie is that all his characters are in a good mood. Theyre just all happy yeah. Seth and then youre just its just so contagious to watch him. Yeah, and it was crazy to, like, watch him get his feet under him. You know, you could tell when he was first walking around, it was like, this is familiar space but unfamiliar space, you know what i mean and then by like, friday, youre in blocking and youre like, oh no, hes full eddie murphy hes in it again and it was kind of cool to just watch him get his legs back under him and get to running it was great you reference a purple couch yeah, well, when i first was with my girlfriend, she was like, she had a business and stuff, so she ran her own business on auburn ave in atlanta. And she was the first professional girl i had ever dated and i was like kind of a super bum. And like, i worked at a starbucks and i didnt even have money to buy her pizza on our first date it was super embarrassing and all of that. But she was like, the first girl that i ever had to call a a doorman had to call up to let me up that kind of jazz. And she had this very uncomfortable purple couch in her apartment that she had purely for vanity and not for comfort in any way [ laughter ] and one night, we were sitting on it and she just kind asked me what i wanted to do with my life she was like, i just dont feel like this is what you want to be and you know, what is it that you really want and i told her that i wanted to be a comedian and she asked me why i just dont go do it and i told her because i was afraid so she was the first person that i was vulnerable about my dreams with in that way and to then be able to share doing a special with her, it was just such a full circle, like, really, touching moment for us seth thats really cool. Its also, i mean, i could say the same about how supportive my wife has been. Of course, the price they pay for being with comedians, as we talk about them a great deal when we get on stage does she sign off on the things you talk about yeah, for sure. Like, i always run things by her. Even if i get up and i just say it without her knowing beforehand, as soon as i get off stage, im like, were you cool with that . Would you rather i never said that again you know, im very, like, particular about checking in with her because i live with her and i seth yeah. Next to her, so i should want to make sure that shes good seth thats a very, youre playing it very wisely lately i feel like the best thing to do is say, like, hey, heres what i want my special to be you can veto three jokes and i feel like you try to have at least 20 in about them, then three is a very fair tradeoff yeah. Plus, with my girl, like, she likes for me to talk about her a little bit you know what i mean seth sure, yeah. So shes like, yeah thats shes kind of into it, depending on what i say. Seth well, that would, i remember saying to my wife, what else do you want me to tell jokes about . I literally spend more time with you than anyone. Right, i dont have any other options. Sometimes it feels bad, like youre mining your partner, but its like, im with you all the time so, like, i dont know what else to do. Seth i think were both very lucky to have understanding partners in that regard. Sure. Seth hey, congrats again on the special and its really nice to see you sam and hopefully, one of these days, ill bump to you in 30 rock again yeah, and maybe this halloween youll be cardi b.
