Its easy, even dangerous, to become numb to the scope of the coronavirus tragedy thats all around us. Yesterday the United States hit a total of 5 million cases. That is 2 million more than brazil which is second in the world in cases. The panel is with us from their weve also passed 160,000 remote locations. Msnbc anchor joshua johnson. Deaths, 163,028 this morning and nbc news capitol hill correspondent, kasie hunt and the university of washingtons model projects the toll could rich lowry, editor of national roughly double to 300,000 by the review. To sort of set the table here i first of december, but lets put want to show case our nbc news that 160,000 figure into a political units first little bit of perspective. Battleground map of 2020. Thats about 40 more than the full disclosure, i am a member total number of americans killed in world war i. Of said political unit. It is nearly triple the number we will start with the states of americans killed from Hillary Clinton won if 2016 all of which remain in bidens vietnam, and if that yfrunivers column which compatrump carried of washington figure is connect 2016 we are currently we would have passed the battle deaths from world war ii all in demonstrating a a tossup in less than one calendar year. Stripes. The six trump 2016 states that heres another perspective. Weve been considering the key over the past two weeks weve six battlegrounds for 2020. Suffered one death from covid19 wisconsin, michigan and every 77 seconds. President trump continues to pennsylvania in the north. Insist as he put it, it will go right now none are tossups and away like things go away and all have biden with a consistent when pressed in an interview recently mr. Trump added they lead. Biden would have 324 elect ral are dying, thats true. Votes if just the states hes it is what it is. Leading in went his way, far yes, it is what it is, and what more than the 270 he needs on par with the barack obama it is is a once in a century electoral numbers of 2008 and crisis made worse bipartisan politics, testing mistakes, 2012. President trump leads in 20 states good for 125 electoral evolving advice. A public too quick to ignore votes and nebraskas second safety guidelines and a Congressional District we hagia president who has chosen to dismiss and distract for far too and texas all of which president long. Adding to that, washington seems trump won last time as the more paralyzed than usual, remaining tossups with 79 deadlocked on a relief package electoral votes and if those are prompting President Trump who the tossup states you know himself has refused to meet with where the map is. Negotiators personally, to step rich lowry, i start with this, a in late yesterday and attempt to backdrop because i ask this sidestep congress. Simple question, why is the taking executive action. President not taken the weve had it. Democrats deal at this point because it seems it probably President Trump signing a series of executive orders after would help his reelection prospects. His own negotiators failed to make a deal. It wases a disappointing yeah. Chuck, theres some dispute meeting. This morning was about how the real reduced disappointing and i dont care what rose they try to pin on it, spending is in the democratic offer, but the white house has its got a lot of thorn. We did not make any progress been reluctant to get much above today. With a nation in crisis. A trillion dollars and i think whats at stake for my family is being able to stay who we its with an eye to renewed republican concern about the deficit and i very much get concern about the deficit, but are, being able to maintain the life that we have. The real sin here isnt deficit the limited actions are likely to be challenged in Court Spending in the midst of major as President Trump takes on economic dislocation. Powers constitutionally granted it was all of the deficit to congress. Spending that took place when maybe theyll bring legal the economy was good. Actions, maybe they wont, but they wont win. 30 million americans are set joshua johnson, i had one to miss another be democratic aid. This week an Eviction Moratorium thats been whats made these expired last month for millions negotiations so odd is that the more the small paycheck normal rules of politics they Protection Program lapsed on thought would apply to the other saturday and some student loan side which is the political relief will expire at the end of pressure of the moment has not impacted them yet. September. President trumps action sets a weekly unemployment benefit at yeah. Its kind of interesting the way that the political pressure has shifted over the course of this 400. Why did you decide on 400 pandemic. I mean, Mitch Mcconnell was when previously families were interviewed by politico this week and said its a lot harder receiving 600. Now than it was four months ago. That will be a hardship. This is not a hardship and were that much closer to the election. I do think dr. Navarro made an this gives them a great interesting point in saying that incentive to go back to wok. You dont negotiate in public. State, many dealing with that may be part of why this is budget gaps and pleading for so hard. More federal support must i think its also telling that contribute 25 in order for both sides cant seem to come to americans to qualify. An agreement perhaps because of which governors have told you the publicity around these that they would sign on . Well, if they dont, they negotiations. It might be bet or both sides if dont. Thats up to them. They just sent delegates and if among the new orders, deferring payroll tax for those all of the Major Players stayed home and stayed away from earning 100,000 a year and a cameras for a while, but yeah, move opposed by Many Democrats as we get closer to the and republicans suggesting election, unfortunately, it seems like less and less is federal agencies consider some getting agreed to because every eviction protections and sound bite after every deferring student loan payments. The constitution does not give negotiation became something the president power to either that would end up in an appropriate or tax without opponents campaign ad. Congress. President trump once promised to they have to come to an be a dealmaker. Im different than other president s. Agreement. Theres just no cho im a dealmaker. The economic fallout is just too i do hundreds of deals. Great not to. The deals come out of my ears. Yet, do you see them landing you have to do deals. This plane this week . We dont want to do the i think the blame game has executive orders all of the made that potentially very time. It wasnt supposed to be about difficult at this point, chuck, executive orders. And republicans are essentially like tip oneal and ronald reagan, you have to bring them together. With the two sides trillions making a bet that democrats are not going to go out there to of dollars apart on a package knock down the unemployment which should include money for schools, reopening, for virus insurance executive order because they simply cant be testing and aid to cities and seen doing that and i think states. I say come back when youre there are real questions about ready to give a higher number. At his golf club this weekend mark meadow, the white house chief of staff and his role in the president spun the facts the negotiations because steve both on the economy, for 20 straight weeks unemployment claims have topped 1 million mnuchin seemed willing to cut this deal with democrats and shattering historical records. There does seem to be this the single threemonth period of job creation in american overarching bets that the people history. And on the virus. That will pay the ultimate a pandemic which is political price for not doing a deal will be republicans in the senate and the white house. Disappearing. Its going to disappear. Whether thats the best course of action for the country, i and joining me now is peter think is up for our viewers to decide. Is the real problem here for navarro. He is the director of trade and the white house the fact that manufacturing policy. Ha also the National Defense production act coordinator. Any deal that Congress Cuts is going to be Majority Democrats dr. Navarro, welcome back to having to vote for both in the meet the press and i want to house and the senate . Start with something the chief yeah. Of staff said on friday. Yeah. Thats another constraint, but take a listen, sir. Its definitely in his political were going to take executive interest to do this, to get a orders to try to alleviate some deal. These executive orders are of the pain that people are nebulous, theyre confused and theyre a poor substitute for experiencing. This is not a perfect answer. Law making and i should note, well be the first ones to say even if theyre technically that, but it is all that we can legal, this is not how our system is supposed to work where do and all the president can do congress affirmatively declines within the confines of his to do something and the executive power. President rummages around for authorities to try to do it on so is this an his own. This is part of a longrunning acknowledgement . Do you agree with the chief of staff that this is not enough . Trend on trampling on an that this is a small amount here and in order to do more thats effective congress. Are you in the ben sasse necessary you still have to work with congress . Camp, chris, with constitutional he didnt say it was a small amount, chuck. Slop . Yeah. What he said was its not its against the spirit of our system. Its when many of us invade enough. Against obamas second term what weve got here is the president taking action on four governance and its an extension of that. Yeah. Fronts to help four discreet i want to pivot to veepstakes since well stick with politics groups. So you have the payroll tax cut which is effectively a here. Joshua, the David Axelrod tweet they asked senator durbin about, substantial wage hike for americans who have their jobs. It is sort of it is an you have a plus up for workers who are on the unemployment insider conversation that this lines. Youve got relief for renters idea that are some candidates and singlefamily homeowners so running too aggressive of a they dont become homeless and campaign for this number two you have, for our young people slot . Thats the thing. Im not sure how to read the have this crushing burden of campaign. Like, you know, if you were student loan. You have relief and those are asking me who was going to win four, targeted solutions and the nba championship, i know the that will help deal with the rules of the game and how the pain. Its unfortunate that we have players have done. No one knows the rules of this not yet got a deal, but in the game and no one knows what the Campaign Strategy is, who the absence of that president donald players are or who the j. Trump is acting on behalf of leaderboard is. Theres no way for us to know the american people. Which makes this whole political i want to ask you about these season even more opaque, forgive provisions. Me, chuck, by the way, but i did some of them look legally dubious here. Want to mention before we get are you confident what gives too far out, dr. Navarro did say you confidence that the president has the power to something to you that was a bit decide when to postpone the deceptive in his assessment of collection of taxes . The pay that the payroll tax has well, one of the things i learned here, chuck, at the been viewed which makes his white house going through a lot of work on executive orders is negotiations harder which said what we have the statutory nancy pelosi supported it in authorities to do, and im confident that every single one 2011 and that was two percentage of those orders which cleared points and not a payroll taxt through the office of legal and that was deceptive in what he said. And there was a plan to counsel will stand up. Restore Social Security. You get to the challenge of if you look, for example, at the trying to fit an hours worth of eviction and foreclosure television in. Right. Exactly. There were a lot of things that i had to unpack on that language in your opener there you noted the words shall one. Kasie hunt, were going to hear consider. Thats how you have to write it, from the Vice President at some point about his runningmate, but Everybody Knows in that bure maybe tomorrow. Ok ras they you damn well should it does feel as if were still sitting in and its Kamala Harris versus the field and do it and you will. The payroll tax cut, we clearly biden world seems divided. Some think its the perfect pick h had the authority to do that and that could be done easily and some think can you trust her to be your loyal number two . Through the treasury defendapar and i would note in 2012 nancy David Axelrod didnt name pelosi was a strong supporter of name, but the underlying the payroll tax cut and barack suggestion has been that its obama used bonds funding to make Kamala Harris camp thats playing political hard ball sure that the Social Security behind the scenes here in trying was not harmed in any way and to make sure that her way to this pick is relatively clear. President trump, theres nothing im not saying that we have more strongly than he supports is the integrity of social reporting on that, but the suggestion from people in public security. So each of these provisions is very strong, and i think work. Its unfortunate that these thats rubbed a lot of women the negotiations to date have wrong way. Women operatives ive talked to failed, but look, this should be have looked at this process and easier than it is, chuck. Feel that, you know, were we have two sides and ones that experiencing a little bit more of what Hillary Clinton went want one trillion and the others through, that this process is want 3 trillion and the first this way partly because its thing is agree on some number in women fighting it out and people between and step two is figure are less comfortable with women out within that what you both in that role and at the end of agree on Something Like a 1200 the day it will come down to the check to every american and then relationship between the vice what you do president and the person that he ultimately picks so only he right. You trade off and go back and knows the answer to that forth across the table what you question. And the fact of the matter is want respecting each others red lines. You dont make the republicans we know hes probably met with play for planned parenthood or more of these folks face to face than weve been able to track platforms, for example, this should be easy. During this pandemic. The question weve had watching all right, guys. This unfold. Well done. The question the president has thank you very much. When we come back, you want to know which states the is whether the democrats really vo 2020 has been the year of the unthinkable. Are sincere when they come to the table, and im not sure and millions of americans are struggling to put it doesnt help when speaker food on the table. So wells fargo is helping our neighbors feed their loved ones. Pelosi goes out after every day using some of our locations as driveup food banks. With scarfs flying and beats the heck out of us for being cruel and helping provide 50 million meals for americans in need. People. Let me follow up. Go ahead. No, let me ask you this, the unthinkable has happened. Where is the president . Why was he at his golf club all now its time to rethink how to make a difference. Weekend . Why isnt he negotiating . Look, i understand you guys wells fargo. Dont like each other and nancy pelosi well, where is he . Why isnt he involved . You have to understand this is the hardestworking president in history. He works 24 7. Come on in, were open. He could be in bedminister and maralago and he could be at all we do is hand you the bag. The whirlpool factory like we simple. Done. We adapt and we change. Were thursday celebrating you know, you just figure it out. Weve just been finding a way to keep on pushing. Working men and women. The problem here is capitol hill, the swamp. The two houses that are too far apart. The lord and the Founding Fathers created executive orders because of partisan bickering and divided government. Thats what we have here, but the president has taken action. His constituency, lets be clear. His constituency is mainstream republicans and blue collar democrats and independents who are sick and tired of the swamp and he reached out and he took action. He didnt have to he could have just let this keep going, and he did not. He took action, action, action and action. You okay. You outlined how a negotiation works and you did something very interesting. You said the democrats are 3 trillion and the republicans are 1 trillion. Thats what the democrats proposed. They said hey, lets meet in the middle on a number and it looks like mark meadows said no. No, no. Thats not accurate. Heres the thing the Cardinal Rule in negotiations is you dont do them on tv. You dont do them here on tv and you dont do them in capitol hill in the rotunda like nancy pelosi does. You do it with sincerity and have to have both sides to do a welcome back. Data download time. Deal. I know a deal could be done if if you want to know what a you just go by that rule. Campaign really thinks about its it can be done, but in the chances, dont listen to what it absence of this president says. Follow the money. Trump will act to help people since june theres been some who are unemployed, who are interesting movement showing us which states each campaign is hurting, people who are working that need more money. Bullish about and which ones are renters, homeowners who are neck and neck. First, the big three blue wall really facing a bleak future of states that went for trump in eviction and foreclosure s and 2016. Both campaigns were fully engaged and all three until students that need to get out midjune, but in recent weeks from under the burden of debt. Weve seen some changes. Lets take a look at the state assuming negotiations of michigan. Continue and a deal happens in a in the week of june 2nd, the week or two weeks i assume the trump and biden forces were executive orders become null and spending at roughly the same void . If congress solves the level there, 474,000 for team problem theres no need for the president to take executive action, okay . Trump and 484,000 for team well see what we get, but biden. Biden built a substantial heres the point. Polling league and by july 21st, lets not go there. Lets go to this. The financial numbers were we have four actions President Trump has taken that will help workers, the unemployed, roughly 16,000 for trump in michigan and 1. 6 million for renters, homeowners and biden in the state. Students. Then there are the states students who have student loans. What we need is sincere donald trump won in 2016 where the Biden Campaign and probiden negotiation. We have to believe that both sides actually want a deal and outside groups are offense, North Carolina, arizona and there is this theory, chuck, that the democrats would prefer florida. Well focus arizona. Trump spending was at 161,000 to see the economy go into the versus nothing for biden. By the week of july 21st, trump tank for another 90 days because and company were spending that harms the president. I hope that capitol hill hasnt 1. 1 billion, then there are the become that cynical, but states Hillary Clinton won where watching these negotiations makes me wonder. Think the cynicisms are too she once saw an opportunity, nevada, new mexico and extreme. Minnesota. I take your point. The Trump Campaign is spending very little now in new mexico were it willing to bend. And minnesota. He has a reputation of lets look at nevada, protrump killing more deals thats not fair. Spending has gone from zero the hes a great negotiator and week of june 2nd to more than 400,000 and stayed there through what we dont want is to have july 21st and while biden seemed this break down and we went up to think it was safe enough not there in good faith and we to spend early on and more didnt see our side going out in recent ad buys suggest theyre the rotunda throwing grenades not paying attention to nevada. The heavy campaign ad is yet to and it was the other side doing that. Let me ask you about the dp hit and cbattlegrounds can apart of your job. Continue to shift and so far the advertising map continues to yes. You wear a lot of hats. Expand for joe biden and the last days of summer how President Trumps team is mostly trump fell short in containing a having to play defense. When we come back, coronavirus virus and i want to pull out this paragraph because i think and the classroom. It impacts you, dr. Navarro, the when will it be safe enough to send children back to school. Administration has resisted this Upcoming School year is doing so. Trump and several white house aides have instead continued to overwhelming. Think that it is politically how will we build engagement with our students and make it advantageous to see the issue to the states to avoid taking feel like were still in a ownership or blame for the issue building . My biggest concern about going back is being able to even though testing shortages are largely seen as to figure to help fix this testing problem in the country . So were going to come out with a report early this week that identifies all of the things the president has done using the defense production act. Theres over 30 actions weve taken. A lot of them related to testing. I think the posterchild for that was a dpa title 3 that we did that got gilford maine, and upping the production of swabs to 20 million a month. Those are the things were doing and were fighting using the dp on all fronts. Were using the defense production act in cocomo, ready to shine from the inside out . Try natures bounty hair, skin and nails gummies. I that. The number one brand to support silky hair, glowing skin, and healthy nails. Where is that urgency for beauty comes naturally, testing. Pardon me . Only from natures bounty. Where is the urgency for beauty comes naturally, testing . Thats the point here. Over time, you go noseblind to the odors in your home. Ill give you another example. Selective instances. background music but others smell this. We are issuing grants to mach sure we get point of care virus upbeat music thats why febreze plug has two alternating scents testing. This, to me, is going to be the and eliminate odors for 1200 hours. Breathe happy febreze. Gamechanger where right now weve got two types, right . La la la la la. Weve got a lab test that takes a number of days which is not a diagnosis of Metastatic Breast Cancer optimal. Its highly accurate and we have can bring up questions that make you feel like shutting down. The i. D. Now of abbott which go here findyourmbcvoice. Com takes 15 to 20 minutes and were expanding that reach and we have a point of care thats like a were all doing our best to keep each other safe. Pregnancy test where you can do it at your home. At walmart, despite everything thats changed, chuck, we are working 24 7 on one thing hasnt, these things and theyve made and thats our dedication to you and our communities. Great progress on therapeutics. This president is going to probably be able to get one or were working together, instore and online, more vaccines by the end of the through pickup and delivery, year. Thats a third of the time it to safely get you the essentials you need. Usually takes in using a defense production act. So ill get you ill personally send you a copy of this report when it comes out. You tell me afterwards whether weve done a lot using that dpa, but its the most rapid industrial mobilization in this country since world war ii. And i think there are a lot of people that hear your enthusiasm and want to see you use it even more, but dr. Navarro, i want to leave the conversation there, thank you for coming on and sharing the administrations perspective. I appreciate it. Yes, sir. Joining me now is dick durbin of illinois. Welcome back to meet the press. I want to start with something Peter Navarro just said. For spending a perfectly reasonable amount of time he said in negotiations one side on the couch with tacos from grubhub . Has one number, and he said rewarded there needs to be something in the middle, and when i heard get a free delivery perk when you order. That i thought, well, that [group] grubhub. Sounds like potential progress. Did you hear that as suddenly the white house wants to move to the middle because that doesnt seem to be what mnuchin and meadows did. Chuck, let me just tell you, if that is the standard weve not only accepted it, weve offered it. We were 3. 4 trillion dollars in the bill that nancy pelosi and the House Democrats passed 12 weeks ago. 12 weeks ago, and now weve come down to the range of 2 trillion. They were at a trillion. We asked them to come up to a trillion and it does exactly what mr. Navarro suggested. We are ready to meet the white house and the republicans half way. Weve said that from the start. We have priorities that may be different from theirs and in terms of the dollar amount we are at where mr. Navarro suggested. Im concerned about the president s authority to do these things in order to get the courts to look at it, do you think congress ought to file suit on, for instance, the payroll tax eo or the unemployment eo . This is a moral dilemma. We want Unemployed People to receive benefits. We never wanted them cut off at all. So im not going to suggest we run out to court at this point. I think some will. There will be some challenges. This country club fix suggested by the president will be a cut in the Unemployment Benefits for 30 million americans. Its either going to be cut from 600 to 400 or from 600 to zero where it is right now if the president s executive orders dont stand. The bottom line is this, these welcome back. All this week nbc news and msnbc people are not lazy people. Are airing a special series, we have five unemployed americans for every available coronavirus in the classroom an education in america during job. This urban legend which i say is the covid19 pandemic. The big question, of course, an urban lie about people whether schools can be opened sitting at home bingeing on and opened safely and how do you netflix and eating open them . Chocolatecovered cherries. Ive met with these families and this morning we brought together intimately involved in trying to theyre desperate to go back to get students educated this year while also trying to keep work, and theyve taken a cut to teachers, students and their wages below the unemployment parents safe all at the same benefits and they want back in time. Jacqueline dungy is the the job and they understand principal at the new paradigm unemployment is a temporary Loving Academy in detroit which helping hand. So this notion that theyre lazy is hoping to create a and if they tried harder theyd find jobs just doesnt work. Combination of inperson and want to put up a comment from Virtual Learning and hes a a House Democrat who is in a teacher in las vegas and they plan to start online own and swing district and listen to christine mcclary is a nurse at what he said yesterday. The east Sanford School in representative Tom Malinowski of auburn, alabama, where parents new jersey, a firstterm democrat, he warned a lack of an get to choose between inperson agreement would prompt his and remote learning. A principal, a teacher and the voters that congress is broken school nurse, you guys are on and washington is broken and the front lines of all of this that is great for challengers, in many ways. He added. Jacqueline, i want to start with the question is do you feel you as a principal, i have a pressure that you have to cut a brotherinlaw who is a principal and hes feeling it from all sides. Deal even if you dont like what the pressure not to open, the pressure to immediately open. Youre getting . Do you worry that the democrats everybody wants immediate are taking too hard of a line answers. I can only imagine the pressure here and at some point you have youre feeling right now. To move more than you want to . Just tell us a little bit about chuck, thats the nature of a it. Well, of course, we all want to ensure a safe return to negotiation. You have to give a little to get school for our students, our a little and thats what it boils down and look what families and even our staff, and with that being said, there are happened on march 26th and march so many things that have to come 16th when we passed a cares act. Into play to ensure were able to do that. We surveyed our families. 960, bipartisan and we now have 20 republican senators who said we wanted to make sure that they not a penny. Felt comfortable with even zero. Nothing at this point, and we coming back to school. Have Mitch Mcconnell, the we put together a task force to study, you know, make some republican leader who is not even attending the negotiating decisions about what are we going to do in the future sessions and same thing with upcoming because we knew this was going to be a long kevin mccarthy, the house experience. Republicans and look at the theo, in las vegas, your First Priority and the first school youll be starting online priority, of course is only at first. Whats the biggest hurdle youre unemployed and even higher than that is doing something concerned about clearing as you correctly about the coronavirus. When i heard mr. Navarro with prepare for this onlineonly his talk about testing im environment in a couple of thinking are you in touch with weeks . I think the biggest thing, the real world . The fropresident has been sayin chuck, is that its new for for weeks and maybe months, if everyone, right . Its new for me as a veteran you test you can get it. Teacher. Its new for the parents and that wasnt even possible and families and it will be new for youll have the same instant the student, and so i think the results of testing that he does biggest hurdle for us is how do i engage students in an online with white house visitors and that isnt the real world out platform and how do i make sure here. The people waiting in line for that theyre showing up every testing and theyre waiting for day, that im building results from five to 12 days relationships with them. Which makes them almost thats going to be the biggest pointless. Thing and the toughest thing that is a priority for us. That educators are facing right testing to deal with the now is just that engagement and coronavirus is key to opening getting those kids to show up economy and opening our schools. And understand what School Looks Like this year. Right. Christine, lets go final question with a little democratic politics. Believe it or not, and i dont i want to put up this tweet from know how many people watching David Axelrod and you know him, know this, but most schools do not have a fulltime school longtime chief strategist for president obama, an illinois guy these days, and he says this, i nurse. According to the survey, we were able to find about 35 of cant remember any vp Selection Process where so Much Research fulltime and other 30 of has been dumped. Schools have a parttime school if i were joe biden looking for nurse and about a quarter dont a good and loyal partner that should be a source of concern. Have any nurse at all. David axelrod didnt imply who so first i want to talk about was behind this, but there has been a lot of negative stuff what role do you believe you should be playing when it comes dropped on a couple of candidates, susan rice and karen to opening these schools . Bass in particular. Do you feel like you and your are you concerned about how all fellow School Nurses, you should this looks . I am concerned, but not be doing the testing or supervising a testing strategy . Surprised, chuck. This is the political world we having a safe school live in. Throughout our state and it never was bean bag. Throughout the country is its always been a tough game, paramount for all School Nurses. But its gotten much worse over the last several years. First of all, i would say we need to have a fulltime nurse the level of preposterous claim, the charges that have been in every school every day. Thrown and theyve gone out of that would really help with the children and their safety and sight, lock her up, lock her up, their health. For goodness sakes. As far as testing, this alabama that goes way beyond anything association of School Nurses did any of us have seen in come up with a plan that was president ial campaigns and that is the nature of this business fourpronged that addressed and those who stick with it and potential testing in the schools with parental consent in order my colleague, tammy duckworth, to get results back more quickly for goodness sake, shes all, so we would know if children but an American Hero for what were actually sick or not. Shes given to this country and we actually were looking into there have been those on rightwing Television Shows that doing thermal scanning with a. I. Have criticized her as not being technology to determine if a worth of consideration for this child was symptomatic quickly office. That to me shows extremes that before the child got into the school and potentially, posed either their teachers or other theyll reach. Dick durbin, im going have students. What about the technological to leave it there and the divide . Who closes that gap . Democrat from illinois, senior are you expected to do it for these parents . Senator from illinois. Are you expected to find the thanks for coming on and sharing your perspective. Thanks, chuck. Technology for these kids or is thanks, chuck. Ack, someone going to come in here and get these resources . As a School District we were able to get during the spring 99 of our families engaged in Online Platforms and we weraible to provide technology for any of the students that were in need and we were able to provide support with internet as needed and necessary. So we havent been able to get support as well as shift some of our funding to bridge that Digital Divide because that is a huge concern. That led to me as a person, but this year, the Alzheimers Association as our Leadership Team and other thanks, chuck. Ack, walk to end alzheimers is everywhere. Principals doing home visits to ensure that students had the on every sidewalk, track, and trail across this country. Technology that they need as well as ensuring that they knew all of us are raising funds for one goal how to use that technology and that that wasnt a barrier a World Without alzheimers and all other dementia. Because we know that with our students that are in those because this disease isnt waiting, neither are you. Distressed and lower socioeconomic groups that we have to make sure that we are take the first step on your walk right now. Bridging that gap. I think the biggest thing that we have to remember is that go to alz dot org slash walk. The School System is meant to actually uphold the community, our best to keep each other safe. And i think that in the spring time we make sure that our at walmart, despite everything thats changed, students have the technology, one thing hasnt, but if i have a family that has and thats our dedication to you and our communities. Two or three children at their home, i need each of them to were working together, instore and online, have a device. The first thing that i have to through pickup and delivery, do as a teacher is figure out to safely get you the essentials you need. What that family needs and find out and survey them and do they have wifi . Can they get on . Does their device work . And so all of those things are the first things we have to do to engage those families at the its called ubrelvy. Very beginning, and i the the migraine medicine for anytime, other thing, because we have anywhere migraine strikes without worrying christine on, too, teachers cant do this without the if its too late or where you happen to be. Others support and the one dose of ubrelvy can quickly stop a migraine educators who are out there in its tracks within two hours. Helping us. Many had pain relief in one hour. If i have a family and tet do not take with strong cyp3a4 inhibitors. Few people had side effects, them on then my school most common were nausea and tiredness. Psychologist, my school ask about ubrelvy. The anytime, anywhere migraine medicine. Counselor, social worker, school nurse, those folks are essential to make sure that all of those needs are taken care of. How much would it cost to make sure there is a school nurse in every school this year . Do you have an estimate on Something Like that . Because thats obviously, one in four schools have nothing. Welcome back. As we mentioned earlier we had 5 i assume this is something that would have to come from the million u. S. Cases yesterday. Federal government. For some perspective, the first well, currently, chuck, it covid19 case in the united doesnt. States is believed to have at least in my state. Occurred on february 6th. It is funded by the state. We hit 1 million cases on april when we applied for cares act 28th. Funding the Alabama Association 82 days later. Of School Nurses in our plan, we it then just took 43 days to hit applied for cares act funding the 2 million mark on june 10th. For our plan and so that would have funded for a school nurse we hit the 3 million mark on in every school in the state of alabama for one year. July 7th and that was 27 days you know, i think the approach later and just 16 days later we to reopening schools has reached 4 million u. S. Cases on somewhat been back card. July 23 d ard and again, it too we approached it from an educational standpoint and not a just 16 days to hit this 5 health standpoint, and i think if we had started looking at million reported case number that time from a health right here in the United States. Joining me now is dr. Tom standpoint, how do we reopen safely . How do we get isolation rooms inglesby of the johns hop kens and so forth instead of what can we do to keep kids safe at home and we have a lot more School Systems opening up. Scho the rest of o you put out a list of ten recommendations. You guys didnt call it a reset, how do we get control of this virus now . Ago one of your sort of colleagues in the larger sense Michael Osterholm is calling for a reset of some sort New York Times today editorial page calling for this. Officials are calling for some sort of reset, partial lockdowns and things like this and yet we are not having that conversation at all on the political side of things. Are we doomed to sort of live with this virus now if were not going to at all look at your recommendations . I dont think were doomed to this fate. I think we know what to do. Other countries have done it. I think the purpose of these resetting reports and these calls for a reestablishment of the basics is that we know that in other countries, the universal masking, physical distancing, avoiding large gatherings and those kinds of things have worked. If we look at countries like italy, spain and france. They have a total of seven or eight deaths a day and we have a thousand and its not magic what they did and i think if we act together in national unison, we can get there and thats what the purpose of these many of these reports are. Want to bring up the issue of masks. There have been some people who said we have 95 compliance on mask wearing we could sort of get this virus under control. Is that unrealistic and do we need to do more than just mandating masks . We do. I think masks are not alone and not by themselves are alone the solution, but they are a critical part of it. We know that physical distancing makes a big difference. We know that large gatherings are places where super spreading, venspreading events occur and the vier you hto get around quickly and infect many people at once so we have to do a number of things together. In terms of simple things like diagnostic testing results coming back much quickly. Its unacceptable for the country to have testing come back a week or two weeks later. A staggering toll. Its not useful at that point. The u. S. Crosses 5 million its not useful even doing the coronavirus cases, raising new tests and there are a number of fears for the school year as things that we have to do, but packed events roll on despite theyre not complicated. The pandemic they may be hard, but we have to and a curveballin the battle over benefits do them in unison. President trump takes matters into his own hands, signing a and all of those are not hard series of executive orders, except when the word politics including a payroll tax cut. Gets involved and it makes but it comes with a major catch everything harder and i want to for the millions waiting on keep you out of the political space here. Relief North Carolina rattled let me ask you a question about the state cleaning up after vaccines and to sort of set getting rocked by its most expectations, dr. Fauci implied powerful earthquake in a hundred that the first vaccine that we years. Early today starts right now get, he hopes its 75 effective. The fda said theyll approve any vaccine thats at least 50 effective. Can you explain to the public what that means . What it means and what it doesnt mean and what our expectations should be for the first vaccine . Well, we know that many of the vaccines that we use are not perfect. They dont prevent every case of disease, but if they prevent a substantial portion of disease then that can help us get to a point where most of us are protected, the disease cant spread quickly between people anymore, a concept that is called herd immunity. Herd immunity doesnt mean we wont have the disease anymore. It means it wont as efficiently spread in an epidemic form. Is there a percentage figure in your mind that you think will sort of give us a huge step in the right direction . Is it a vaccine that is at 75 or it is 50 , do you fear that could be a false sense of hope . I think we would take 50 because 50 is a lot better than what we have now. We have no tools, no vaccine tools or medicine tools that we can use to slow this down, so 50 would be far better than what we have now. Of course, we all want something that is 75, 85, 90 effective, but well have to see what we get and i think for the amount of time that has passed since the beginning of this pandemic to have this vaccine thats 50 effective in the coming months or in the beginning of 2021 would be phenomenal, but we hope its better, but 50 would be better than what we have now.
