Jimmy how is the fam hows life in quarantine right now . Pretty good, man, relatively speaking i mean, overall were sort of still choosing safety for the family weve got my 88yearold mom with us. Weve had her with us now for 17 weeks were still doing a pretty quiet quarantine but relatively speaking, man, were solid. Yeah jimmy i want to talk about your book, greenlights. Yeah. Jimmy this has got to be, in your life, one of the biggest things to ever happen. I mean, cause you cant release a memoir twice, really you can only really do this once [ laughter ] right no, i guess you cant. Well, you could. You know, you could rewrite it and some people probably think theyre worth putting out a memoir every year. [ laughter ] but its not totally a memoir. I guess, maybe it was coming on 50 years old and ive been keeping journals and writing things down in my journals for 36 years. And i was always daring myself hey, you may have a book you want to share in there and i built this big Treasure Chest full of these thousands of pages of journals and never had the courage to go away, to go off and say, hey, lets go find a book. Um, and then, coming on 50, i had an open three weeks in my calendar, and that chest was staring me in the eye. And my wife looked at me, she goes, you know what you got to do get your ass out of here take that Treasure Chest, dont come back. Go write it on your own. Jimmy thats right and so, i packed it up, loaded up and went off into solitary confinement and i came back with this, a a book yeah jimmy i mean, yeah i love it, you know. Oh thats what im talking about. I saw that cover and i go, thats iconic. I think its brilliant is it based on something that you remember or is that just a a drawing or what its an over all approach to the book and thats why the title, greenlights. Look, in the highway of life that were living, we got red lights, yellow lights, and greenlights. We dont like the red lights, they stop us, they get in our way, they make us jackknife. They, you know, they keeps us from getting where we want to go we dont like the yellow lights, we got to pause. Theyre an intervention that make us stop and think what we like is the green lights because they say, go, baby. Jimmy yeah we affirm your way. Yes to whatever youre doing we approve, keep going but even though we dont want the yellow and red lights, i found that eventually in life, those yellows and reds do turn green. I mean like, my father passed away that was a major red light in my life. Ive noticed through the years how his passing away turned into maj incentive things that he taught me that i took into my life. The man im trying to become based on what he taught me were green lights of his red light of passing away. So, i really believe that, that, you know, in this life or the next, were going to look back on our red and green light of our life and you go, oh, there was a lesson in that yellow and red and they all eventually turn green. Ah, thank you. So thats what greenlights is jimmy was your dad a big influence in your whole life i mean, is this before yeah, i mean, this storys dedicated to the one thing i always knew i wanted to be, and thats based on my dad but the one thing i always knew i wanted to be was a father. At eightyearsold, to me, being a father was in my mind when you had made it as a man. [ light laughter ] it was the reason in my eightyearold mind why i was shaking hands with people he would introduce me to and saying, yes sir and no sir. It was like, oh, theyre fathers. They have children and i was like, thats it. And so, that was a you know, now ive got three of my own, and that was one of the biggest rights of passage. Sort of, ah, now youre immortal mcconaughey every father you become a a father, youre immortal. Jimmy thats it. Your lineage lives on, you know you pass it on jimmy yeah and so he was a huge influence for me he moved on when i was 21, but we got to spend a great summer together, it was just he and i which happened to be, as i found out 15 years later, i didnt know where my mom was at the time, i found out later, it was during their second divorce. So she was gone. They did get remarried again but, we got to spend a great summer together and become friends. He actually, this is really cool, he was alive five days into the shooting of dazed and confused, which was my very first film i ever worked on. Jimmy wow. So, at that time where i took on something acting, i thought might just be a summer hobby. I might never do it again. He was alive five days into me shooting it. So, he was alive when i started something that i thought might be a hobby, but turned into a career so theres great serendipity in that for me. Jimmy aw, he got to see it thats amazing i love that. Yeah, i you would say this is not an advice book, right no, its not really an advice book. Um, look jimmy but you can take it that way and its kind of a more what yeah, theres a lot of good wisdom in it but i mean, look, advice advice is touchy i mean, look, nobody really wants to hear advice from a celebrity. [ laughter ] and nobody likes to be told what to do, especially me. [ laughter ] jimmy yeah i love preachers, and i love to preach. But i had to really try to watch how much i preached in this book. Id call it an aspirational book its about an approach to life its stories, insights, philosophies that you and anyone else can objectively understand and if you choose, you can subjectively adopt them, and take them into your own life and either change your own reality or change how you see it jimmy this an excerpt that i read that involved a thing called prescribes. Yeah, man jimmy what do you mean by prescribes . Prescriptions, sir. [ laughter ] you know, prescribes jimmy thats right approaches to life, Decision Making paradigms compasses that help us stay on our path and we all need a prescription from time to time. And prescribes are for how to handle a tough time. How to deal with being in a rut. Prescribes are also for how to deal with successes and times that we want to double down on a situation. For instance, one that we all can use personally in the world right now, one of the prescribes i call is, find your frequency. You know, individually and collectively, i think we can jimmy oh yeah. Were living in a very disruptive time. Were out of whack, were balanced we do not have a station on our radio that we can all tune in to, much less agree we want to listen to. So we got to turn the page and we got to find our frequency again. And i believe the key to finding our frequency again begins with each of us individually looking in the mirror and challenging ourselves to more responsible, more empathetic, value ourselves and other more, and just plain be better people. And thats the frequency jimmy wow. That we find. Jimmy i love that. Is that what you hope readers take away from the book . Well, what i hope they take away from the book is a few things i mean, it is a comedy, it is true look, its people, places, stories, prescribes, poems, prayers and a whole lot of bumper stickers, you know . [ laughter ] my initial goal with this book, when i set out, was i said, look, can i write a book thats worth reading, even if it was written by an anonymous author but at the same time, can it be a book that once you read it youre gonna go, bam, theres nobody, but mcconaughey could have wrote that. Jimmy no, that is so unbranded. Its so you. I got to say, everything i read, obviously with covid, i didnt get a physical but i will im going to preorder it and get one cause this is going to live in my library in my house its a good taste of medicine the book is like taking a couple of aspirin instead of going to the infirmary, taking a spaceship to mars without needing your pilots licenses, going to Church Without having to be born again laughing through the tears its good news in a time of a lot of bad news. Jimmy come on. And i got to say, the title, greenlights has got to be theres got to be people who are going like, how did he of course thats the best title. Jimmy what inspired this so, really what inspired this was, me just wanting to like be a different type of person you know, i love david bowie and i just wanted to be a new person, you know and i just wanted to go over here and do this and i did that, and now i just want to be different so ive been listening to a lot of older music and ive been really, really inspired by the beach boys, and their harmonies, and their guitars and all of the interesting sounds that they use in their music so, i spent this whole time just listening to old music with my guitar teacher and studying music theory, and studying all of these Different Things that are in the music that you might not notice.
