Everybody, despite the very bad news, was harboring some sort of hope that we would be just able to hunker down and defeat the crisis, much as some of the european and Asian Countries have done. Now were coming to terms with reality. Reporter professor walker says the end of the covid relief bill and the 600 it provided each week is really going to hurt. When we looked at the numbers, we found that without the 600, about half of Unemployment Insurance claimants in california were below the poverty line. Reporter he said it may mean job seekers are going to have to retrain and look at other fields. Something bernard said hes already doing. You cant be too picky. I had to lower my standards and an hourly rate and hope this would be a steppingstone. Tougher for a lot of people. A notable announcement from the state that impacts many small businesses. A hard freeze for the watch list. Doctors are making difficult decisions on who gets what as they face a shortage of a key drug and blood. Lets bring in janele wang now with the details. Reporter raj, doctors ideally want three things to treat the sickest Covid Patients to help them survive. One is a steroid drug. Theres plenty of supplyly. Its chcheap, its readidily available,e, its b been arorou decadedes b but theress a s s of thehe other twowo things. Onone is s remdesivirir. Its d developed b by gilead i foster city. Its expensive. Its the only drug thats received fda approval to treat Covid Patients. The other is convalescent plasma. All three are needed because they target the virus in different ways. One is like the virus part, like making sure you make less virus, which angers to body in terms of the immune system. And the other part, which is where the steroids come in is quieting down the immune system so it doesnt get super angry and cause the lung and hearts to be super inflamed. Ideally you have all three to treat a patient, but right now youre making difficult choices depending on peoples conditions who gets what. Yeah, so its all about supply, just like the supply lines for masks or ppe, except that these supply issues have graver potential consequences for the patients who need it the most. But ideally, if my grandmother were infected with covid, i would want to have all three available and then i would have that choice or use all three together. Reporter so the steroid the hospital have plenties of, but as they try to secure more remdesivir, they are pleading for people who have had covid to please donate their blood at a blood bank. They need it to basically treat the most seriously ill patients and help them survive and survive covid. It may be a little bit more inconvenient. Theres some paper work, more time consuming, but sit is life saving. Doctors are pleading if you could do that it would help the patients in the hospitals right now. It can protect your sometimes substantial investment in your childs Higher Education if they cant complete a semester. Theres a lot of money on the line here. So today we looked for price quotes. We saw them between 400 and 700 bucks a year. What do you get . It varies. One pays 100 back to you, up to a limit. In other words, 85 and some will cover housing, too. Many policies have restricts like this one that says the illness, injury, or medical condition must be enough to make a reasonable person completely withdraw from school, plus you have to have a doctors note. You dont have to shell out big bucks. We asked if a student gets covid19 and cant finish the semester. There does appear to be some flexibility. Lets talk about san jose state. They told us they will review illness withdrawals on a case by case basis. Ucberkeley said fees could be refunded if theres a medical withdrawal and it is approved. The bottom line here, if youre concerned, ask the college or university first. Then if youre interest in the buying tuition insurance for extra protection, shop around.
