We have been talking a little bit about that, and of course theres the vaccine, and thats being developed and thats way off. Dr. Torres explained the antibody treatment, how theyre being used to give another layer of protection, and he highlighted the fact that its the underserved communities being hit hardest and need this help pronto. Theres a lot of attention being paid to people of color, those in food deserts, not getting t getting the diets they need. Thats impacts their health and on top of that you throw coronavirus. Were learning more and more when it comes to Public Health, its across the spectrum of people across the entire country. Can you tell us a little bit about the trials of antibody drug thats happening . We have two different ways of using the antibodies. One, the plasma. That means taking the plasma from somebody who survived coronavirus and giving it to somebody suffering from coronavirus. Thats hard because there arent as many donors as those suffering from coronavirus. So theyre taking the same antibodies from patients and synthesizing more in the lab and giving those to pash as well. What the trials are looking at, two different things. If people are sick, seeing if these antibodies can help them recover, and if arent nursing can prevent them from getting sick. Were all so worried about coronavirus that were really not taking care of ourselves in other areas and going to the doctor for regular checkup. Especially worrisome is children that maybe arent getting their regular vaccinations. Were focusing on one thing that we may be ignoring our own personal healthcare in other areas. Keeping up in the classroom will no doubt be a challenge for everyone this school year with online learning. How are parents and teachers going adjust. Joining us now from sacramento is e. Toby boyd, president of the california teachers association. Thanks for joining us. The school year is about to begin. You you know that very well. You worked for elk grove for 25 years. Some districts starting up next week. How are teachers holding up . Are they ready for this new normal . Thank you, first off, for having me. A new normal is a good way to say it. Our teachers, the educator that are working throughout the state, theyre frightened. They want to make sure that theyre going to go back into a safe environment, and theyre frightened for their students also, because if a you know, just if a child has asymptomatic symptoms of covid, they may take it home and thats the last thing any educator wants to do. I also have to say that what we want is to truly get back in front of the students in the classroom, but we have to make sure its safe for them to do so. You wrote Governor Newsom a letter saying you want schools do reopen, but when its safe. Do the schools have the resources, the funding, the money to make sure all those safety protocols are in place and they have the ppes, the disinfecting wipes the supplies . What we are seeing throughout the state, the majority of School Districts do not have the necessary safety precautionary measures in place, because it costs money. Now, remember that we had a 54 billion deficit, and schools were going to take a 10 billion cut at that time. That was eliminated, thank goodness. But it only allows them to have the startup. We still need additional funding for devices, for the Digital Divide in terms of connectivity. So they really dont have to funds to truly provide for the ventilation, the ppe, the distancing thats going to be needed. So theres a lot that still needs to occur, but we dont have to funding so thats why we are trying to truly depend on the federal government help us with that process. And until that occurs, i cant see it truly being safe nup enou enough for us to go back to school. As we start off with Distance Learning its heartbreaking to know so many kids dont have access to a laptop, they cant afford it. They dont have access to the internet. How big of a problem is this . Its a huge one. This covid19 exacerbated the problems we had in terms of equity for our students. Every child should have access to a digital device. Its the schools responsibility to make that occur. If they dont have to funding for that, it makes it difficult. Same for the connectivity, the broad band. If you have five children in a home and theyre all trying to get online at the same time you know its going to be a difficulty with that occurring. So, you know, the places that have the connectivity, that have the devices and then there are those that do not. Unfortuna unfortunately its your lower socioeconomic schools that are hardest hit. Toby, we are out of time. One last question for parents who are freaking out. What advice can you give to parents, as you wrap it up quickly . Very quickly, if your children are going to go back to school, you have to make sure theyre going to be in a safe environment, because thats whats needed for them. Trust me, our educators truly want to be there, but we cannot go back and i hope you will not send your children back until you can guarantee and the districts can guarantee that they will be safe. Okay, e. Toby boyd, the president of the california teachers association. We appreciate your time and commitment to the schools. Thank you so much. Thank you very much. And we are continuing our commitment to keeping up in the classroom all week. Reporter deloitte tur vaed parents. Only 43 of parents said Remote Learning makes children academically ready for the next grade. Eventually well get sun breaks in here later on. This is certainly changing it up for us. So much so that forecast models are continuing to hint here at what i think could be measurable rainfall.
