Its a different kind of coronavirus test. Makers say with a swab and 48 hours you can find out if any surface is contaminated with the virus. The team took swabs and fanned out across the country to find out what you are touching in public could be a hot spot for the virus. We got an exclusive look at how that works. Reporter were going up. From handrails to Elevator Buttons indoor and out. Could the coronavirus be here . This new test lets nonscientists like us find out whether anyone with covid19 has touched or breathed on the spaces were in. Its made by San Franciscobased company that gave us swabs to collect samples. Were trying it out for the first time. We have exclusive access to show you what the access is and how it works. You take a swab, dip it into the solution and swab any surface you want to test. Were doing this playground steering wheel. Snap the top of the swab off in the sample tube and youre done. I swabbed all over new york city, in busy public spaces like the subway, coffee shops and the grocery store. All right. We will see on this cart handle. The seat belts and door handles in a taxi and inside an uber. Not pretty. But we got to check. Even inside a public rest room. And what about these high touch items at a restaurant . I wasnt alone. We enlisted news producers from coast to coast swabbing surfaces in five states, including hot spots california and florida. 48 hours after shipping our samples to the lab, we got the results. All our swabs from pennsylvania and new jersey came back negative for coronavirus. No traces of the virus on the trains, at the drugstore or on the mail we swabbed. Not even the chair in the pharmacy waiting area. No positives in california either where the producer swabbed a gas pump, bus seat handle and this el va tor button. In new york, two positive hits. This grocery handle was positive. And this selfserve bread bin also positive. But the worst was florida. Nearly 20 of our samples from miami were positive. Overall, 6 of the samples came back positive within the 5 to 20 shared by the company. We shared our results. Is it reassuring for the public to know that maybe coronavirus isnt in all the places we thought it might be . Absolutely. It is reassuring to know some of our prevention measures are working and that were not seeing coronavirus in places like the mail or on certain public rest rooms. While im definitely surprised by that, i think thats good news. What are the limitations of a positive result . You really dont now how much of the virus is there and you dont know if its dead or alive so you dont know if it could infect somebody or not. Jessica green says the tests are useful for businesses to monitor indoor exposure to covid19. The real power lies in knowing whether or not you have infected people that are asymptomatic that are shedding the virus in closed indoor spaces. Like a school or a nursing home . Yes. This type of test could be used in schools, in nursing homes, hotels, restaurants. She says if you regularly swab a school or an office and see a sudden spike in positives, it can mean people there are infected even if theyre not showing symptoms. Thats valuable information if you want to curb the spread of the pandemic. Remember, doctors say touching contaminated surfaces is not the main way covid19 spreads. For large indoor spaces where you cant clean every surface, surface testing could be the future. But it is not cheep. A ten pack of swabs will cost you about 400. New details in the case of a researcher turned fugitive over alleged ties to china. The federal judge in california has denied a bail request. San franciscos first female black mayor running a pandemic. The side you may not have seen before. Hello. This is the london breed you probably know. And heres the San Francisco mayor you dont know. Actually, youd be surprised but i do like to play dominos. Dominos and uno. She said she doesnt know whats funny anymore. Thats because shes running a city during extraordinary times. So whats it like being a black mayor during george floyd and during a pandemic . The answer is complicated. There is a level of frustration because the privilege that so many white people in this country have always had is even manifesting its way through this movement as if black people dont know whats in our best interest and theyre here, you know, in some ways to save us. Thats been my experience in some ways with a lot of the political structure here in San Francisco. And its been frustrating. Mayor breed was born and raised right here in San Francisco. Running the city was the farthest thing from her mind because she grew up in the projects not far from here. I went to funeral after funeral watching police brutality, losing people that you love. Born london nicole breed in august 1974. She grew up in a tough part of San Franciscos western addition. I have lived in a storm for most of my life. Thats because her sister died of a Drug Overdose and her brother is in prison. It is a miracle she beat the odds. She gives the woman who raised her all the credit, her grandmother. Her parents were slaves. Her whole family were when they were freed they were they were sharecroppers. She made me appreciate what i had. Like it didnt even matter. Your circumstances to never determine your outcome in life. Breed was sworn in as mayor in july 2018. Her hands are especially full now. Yes, im the mayor, but im a black woman first. With recent protests following the killing of george floyd, along with the covid crisis, her job has been overwhelming. People have come to my house in protest before. It was the manner in which how they came to my house. You know, after 11 30, you know, all white walking down the street with these fire sticks chanting, calling me names, telling me to come outside like they were going to do something to me. All of this taking place as the country is going through a covid crisis. Were living in covid. Were swimming in covid. Breed was the first to declare a state of emergency back in february. And the first to issue a shelter at home order in march, way before the coronavirus surge. Were living in covid, as you know, until there is a vaccine. The good news is were testing more people because people feel more comfortable with getting tested. She hopes thats because shes besting more testing sites in black and brown communities, areas that are impacted by the deadly virus. But through it all, mayor breed stays optimistic about the future. I want to be able to be able to live here for the rest of my life. And i want to make it into the city that i know it has the potential to be. In San Francisco, nbc bay area news. Coming up, they just want to jog in peace. Well show you one group protecting africanamerican women during their daily workout. And were seeing the return of low clouds and Cool Temperatures in the 50s. It starts the morning. But when we could see light r it is the simple act of going out for a run that many africanamerican women say they worry about their safety. As Stephanie Gosk reports, one group is getting healthier by training together. 4 45 a. M. In stone mountain, georgia. This is what commitment looks like. When i wam up and i dont feel like rolling out the bed, i know there is some ladies on the pavement expecting me, waiting for me. This particular morning there were five out here together to run. We have runners. We have people who run and walk in between, but there is always going to be somebody waiting for you at the end. And in many ways, that is the principal behind black girls run, an organization started over ten years ago. Now with 74 groups nationwide and 250,000 members. The group committed to accountability and encouragement. J. L. Alexander is the ceo of black girls one. We think its very easy just to get up, lace up your shoes and headad out the froront door. But as mayaybe not manyy people realize, sometimimes j just by skin color or just by being a woman that sometimes makes us very vulnerable. Creating a safe and supportive way to run can help turn around a deadly epidemic, overwhelmingly impacting africanamericans. Four out of five black women in the u. S. Are overweight or have to besty, leading to high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. And all of those diseases make people more vulnerable to covid19. It is super crucial that that activity plays a role in preventing weight gain. What would you say is the most important message, particularly for young black women when it comes to exercise and their health . Just do it. Actuallyly it is byy far one ofe thingsgs that wee can do or we take ownership of and do it in such a way that we will feel better. For april moore, finding this group was a lifeline. My mother suffered a stroke when i was 16 years old. And so watching her and the impact on her health has definitely been a motivating factor for me. Now shes running marathons in far flung places. We are officially the Largest Group of africanamericans that have ever run a marathon on antarctica. It was a pretty dope experience. Back at home, there is strength in numbers. And these women are only getting stronger. Good job. We got it done. Stephanie gosk, nbc news. All right. Meteorologist rob joining us now. We had some beautiful weather right now, rob. Hopefully we keep it going. Yeah. You know, its been a little too warm for some of our inland locations around walnut creek. You are about to see a big time change in the seven day forecast. Those arent typos. The temperatures are really going to drop into the 60s and mid70s inland. Right now temperatures in the mid60s in san jose. Air quality will be the thing to watch. The sea breeze keeping most of the near surface off the east of us. Around Solano County and out towards antioch and brentwood, you may see smoke coming down that will try to drift south at times for the next couple of days. Here is whats going to help. As long as that sea breeze goes, it will probably push more smoke away from the bay area. More clouds making the comeback. Probably not quite as much in the way of low clouds being pushed as far inland. For tomorrow, i think we will see a bump in our temperatures. 90s for morgan hill, down towards gilroy. Tri valley into walnut creeks. 80s over to freemont. 60s near the coast and not much change. San francisco still in the mid60s for now. But the wind coming off the ocean 15 to 25 and north bay temperatures at least for the moment still seeing some 80s and 90s. The big change for us and we dont often get this in august is the tropical pressure Strong Enough to bring chances of rain to our north but it will also take the low clouds, force them to climb up over the hill tops and the weather models have been hinting at this now for the last couple of days. You see it right there. We zoom in and take a look at those prospects here more closely. And look at that. You know the average monthly rain fall is anywhere from about 100 of an inch of rain to a couple hundred. If we can manage that tuesday into wednesday short term that would be a pleasant change from the fire danger in hot and dry conditions we have been seeing around the region. The big cool down, well have to watch the wind, though, especially around the hill tops before that cooler air rises. And valley highs in the mid to upper 80s and low 90s, well see it tomorrow. And then 60s to low 70s. And, yes, maybe a bit of a drizzle storm for wednesday morning and then just like that back into the 90s for next weekend. In terms of the forecast, a lot going on. Start with the 90, end with the 90 but who knows what in between. Rob, thanks a lot. Still to come, welcoming a new bundle of joy social distancing style.
