Gohmert appears to be the 11th member of congress to test positive for covid19. Meanwhile, the president is doubling down on his posting of a controversial video on twitter. It shows people claiming to be doctors who say that the drug hydroxychloroquine works. Now the fda says it does not. One of those doctors featured in that video has also posted claims that medicines are made with alien dna. Also more testing sites at a time when we are learning more about who is getting tested and who is getting sick here in the south bay. Nbc bay areas bob redell is joining us live from one of those new testing sites in san jose. Bob, i heard you just spoke with the health department. What do they say . Reporter first off, were at the Santa Clara County office of education. This is one of those three new popup testere has been a long people out here for a number of hours before testing began this morning. Theyre waiting to be tested for covid19. And, yes, we are learning more about who is testing positive in a Facebook Live the Santa Clara County Public Health department does this three times a week. They announced that the latino population is bearing the brunt of this outbreak in the south bay. Latinos represent almost half the cases, even though they are only a quarter of the population. The department didnt offer an explanation as to why thats the case, why theyre seeing such a higher number of people testing positive. The highest concentrations of cases are in East San Jose and south county. And more than half the people who have contracted covid are under 35 years of age. So its not a disease of old people. Its a disease of all people, people who may notg people. Have a lot of symptoms or feel sick all the time, and maybe with no symptoms with still bring that disease home to the family, your mom, my dad, and, again, not willingly or knowingly sometimes, but they could potentially infect them if theyre not really safe. Regarding those three new popup test sites here in the south bay, theres one at oak grove high. Testing will happen from 1 00 to 6 00 today through friday. You can get tested in gilroy at the south county annex and here at the Santa Clara County office of education where im at. This week the county is also testing out its new wrist band system intended to cut wait times. Show up early, you get a wrist band. That gets you a slot for later in the day. Starting today up in at city wi tests, the same kind of mouth swab test and use by los angeles county. This is tone coura to encoura people who are afraid of the more invasive swab test. Ive had the nasal swab. It really wasnt that big of a deal. These people are going through that right now. And by the way i did test negative. This comes as protesters continue to fight back against their presence overnight. The office has reached a deal to have Border Protection and i. C. E. Agents depart as soon as tomorrow. However, the department of Homeland Security indicates that its forces will remain in the city. This is part of that agreement. The white house sent federal agents to portland earlier this month following violent demonstrations. And a statue some consider controversial has been removed from marin county. That statue of sir Francis Drake has stood near the Ferry Landing for decades. But this morning it was removed. Nbc bay areas Cierra Johnson is live for us in marin county to explain who removed that statue and why so many people wanted it out. Reporter good morning. That statue that you mentioned was of sir Francis Drake. He stood with a flag planted in the ground as well as a sword. That statue is now gone and its nothing but gravel. Thats because the lake spur city manager removed it after protesters with a rally planned tomorrow said they would tear it down themselves if it still stood. Now the city tells us the statue was being stored until conversations about its next steps can be discussed. This move comes after petition to change the name of the boulevard went into circulation. And last month those organizers held a protest in this very spot protesting the statues presence. Those protesters were hoping to enact change and have the statue of that man that took part in the slave trade removed. We spoke with one of those organizers of that june protest today and the moments after he first saw that removed statue. Take a listen to what he had to say. I grew up here, and i had always known the statue was sir Francis Drake. And i realize that now is the time we had to take it down. And so we just started advocating to bring it down peacefully, and today we see the fruits of our labors right here in this empty ground. Reporter and you just missed someone. I want to tell you about an incredible woman who is this month lieutenant maddie became the first black female tactical jet pilot that. Wasnt her goal but thats just what she did earlier this month while pursuing her dream. Reporter for lieutenant junior grade maddie swagel, the sky isnt the limit. Its just the beginning. Its fun because it is difficult at the same time. Reporter swagel making history this month, completing her final training flight to become the first black female tactical jet pilot in the navys nearly 110year aviation history. I think that representation is important because we are a very diverse nation. So i would like everyone to believe that they can achieve whatever they want to do. Reporter in an interview released by the navy, she says growing up her parents told her she could be anything. When she saw the navys blue angels, she knew her calling. They were just so cool. I loved them and i swegel going train among the countrys best for the last three years. Its amazing to think about where i started, and i had never been in an airplane before. Its just one step at a time. Reporter her historic achievements celebrated by many. Senator Kamala Harris writing youre paving the way for young girls everywhere. Go further and kick butt. Swegel joining a list of other trailblazers. The navys First Female Fighter Pilot in 1974. And brenda robinson, the first black female to earn her wings in the navy in 1980. But the navys lack of diversity among its pilots has been criticized. A 2018 investigation found that out of roughly 1,400 fa18 hornet pilots, only 26 were black. And only 33 were female. Last month, the navy creating a special task force to address the issues of racism, sexism, and other destructive biases and their impact on naval readiness. Swegel now hoping her story will inspire many others. I hope that my legacy, there will be a lot of other women and minority women and just different faces that come forward and know that they have all the tools that they need and follow their dreams. Following dreams gold in a ceremony this friday. Well, food vendors at chase center and oracle park in San Francisco are the latest victims from the economic fallout from the pandemic. Roughly 2,100 Food Service Workers are going to be cut. Those cuts include 667 hourly Union Workers at the chase center and 737 at oracle park in addition to 660 who work at both venues. Back in april the organization with the oakland as established a 1 Million Relief Fund for their concession workers. Meanwhile, san mateobased Biotech Company genatech has announced nearly 500 new layoffs. And more help is coming to residents in marin county just trying to make it in the bay. Supervisors just extended the countys eviction moratorium. That now lasts until september 30th. That moratorium was put in place when tenants were faced with difficulties paying their rent because of the pandemic. Renters have up to 90 days after it expires to repay back that rent in full. This is a look at our view from mount tam looking over toward San Francisco where the fog is just rolling over the hills. And were also stain to see clear as it stretches across the bay. Were getting a little bit of sunshine in oakland as we get ready for the first pitch in the game that starts at 12 40. We cant go to ring central coliseum, but we can watch it on tv. And we are going to have some great weather throughout the afternoon as we reach into the low 70s here and a lot more as we also get ready for more evening, we are going to see temperatures in San Francisco at 6 45 at the first pitch at about 65 degrees and then more clouds moving in. That fog will roll in quickly and we wont get much sunshine today. But if youre in the south bay youre enjoying sunshine, great grilling weather. If youre going to be out in the backyard grilling some hot dogs, getting ready for those games, we are going to see our temperatures in the low 80s. And then dinner outside at 6 00 as well be in the upper 70s. So very nice. As we go through all of our micro climates and what to expect for today as we look at concord, were at 86 degrees at 2 00 in the afternoon. But notice the low to mid60s well have along the coast line and that fog still stretching into the coast. In. Into the evening more fog well stay in the low 70s for spots like palo alto and some low 80s in san jose by 5 00. And if you want to go walking later in the evening closer to sunset, its mostly going to be in the 60s and 70s for much of the bay area. So its going to feel very nice. And then that fog gets thicker and stretches across the bay area. So as we go through this forecast, not looking at many changes here. Some low 90s today. And well see that weather continuing into the end of the weekend. But there might be a slight cooldown on friday as a couple of storm systems pass us to our north. But then once that moves out, weve got warmer weather in time for the weekend. Were coming up a couple of degrees for our valleys. And well see more of that for early next week. For San Francisco, no changes here as well. We still have our micro climates and our temperatures along the coast and in the city well be in the looking at some sunshine but were expecting more drizzle and fog.
