Parishes. Pastors do. The pastors office at saints peter and paul church declined to comment. One parishioner called this a perfect example of why the covid19 numbers are spiking. Without leadership thats going to put everybody in the same place at the same time on the same page, doing the same preventions, were going to keep repeating this. Reporter the Public Health department would not comment on this specific case but said Contact Tracing is typical in these kind of situations. We left a message with the bride but did not hear back. In a statement, the City Attorney said he hopes in part that this incident will shock the archdiocese into taking responsibility for whats happening in its churches. In San Francisco, robert handa, nbc bay area news. Thanks, robert. Californias Central Valley is a new area of concern for covid19. The Governor Also Announced a 52 million grant from the cdc to bolster testing in that region, Contact Tracing, and other support to the Central Valley. Hes asking californians to wake up and wear masks. Lets broaden our view statewide now, and cases continue to climb. This graph shows us the number of new cases added each day in california since the pandemic began. Now, you can see just in the last 24 hours, the state reported nearly 6,900 new cases. Now, thats about half the number we saw last tuesday, nearly 13,000, but that was the single highest day total since the pandemic began. So while todays number is considerably lower, its still a significant amount of new infections. Now, sadly as our cases increase, so do the number of californians dying from the virus. Take a look at the daily death in the state. You can see a number of peaks throughout april and may. Now take a look out at july. We have those same peaks, but those peaks are higher. On thursday, the state set an unfortunate record, 159 deaths in 24 hours. Over the past few days, the number of virusrelated deaths has gone down, knthough. Yesterday the state recorded only 29. To help you stay safe, Many Companies are having their employees work from home and today google told their employees they can keep doing it until at least next summer. Many other Tech Companies are now expected to do the same thing, but what does that mean for Small Businesses and real estate here in the bay area . Our business and tech reporter scott budman takes a closer look. Reporter its a giant campus, and its going to be quiet for a long time. Googles ceo emailing employees that in order to give them time to plan ahead, we are extending our voluntary work from home option through june 30th of 2021 for roles that dont need to be in the office. I almost guarantee that all the other, you know, businesses based in Silicon Valley, large and small, and the Tech Industry will follow. Reporter he has a point. Google, because of its size and success, helps set the tone in Silicon Valley. Video game startup deck of dice says its also working from home, which given what houses cost here, actually helps it recruit employees. Our philosophy has been to always hire the best person no matter where they may be. This just makes it easier. Reporter but heres another effect of so many people in Silicon Valley working from home. Until this office fills up with techies again, many of the local restaurants andhat depend on their business are going to struggle. Ive lost 80 of my sales. Reporter sales from walkin customers and big catering orders for meetings. Without them, many Small Businesses simply cant afford the rent here. And its not going to be possible if people if people decide that theyre going to continue this work from home forever. Reporter but what about big, expensive campuses like the apple spaceship or googles next buildings . They will start to say, i miss talking to people in an office. Reporter someday. In mountain view, scott budman, nbc bay area news. Republicans unveiled major parts of their Coronavirus Relief proposal today. Benefits to protect americans impacted by the pandemic are running out. Some have already expired like the federal ban on evictions, though many state and local bans remain. Federal covid Unemployment Benefits run out on friday, and the Payroll Protection Program for businesses ends next month. The gop plan would pay 70 of a workers previous wages, replacing the 600 per week unemployed workers have been getting. It would also shield businesses from lawsuits. But we have to do it in a way that does not slow down reopening. Were also going to help this country pivot into recovery. The American People dont just want relief. They want opportunity. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says democrats have had a relief bill on hold since midmay and have been waiting for the gops counterproposal. One big step closer to a vaccine. Today two major drugmakers kicked off phase three. Pfizer and moderna will have trialing enrolling 30,000 americans each. If their vaccines prove to be safe and more than 50 effective, they will likely get fda approval. I spoke with nbc medical contributor dr. John torres today about that 50 efficacy rate. The reason they said that, if you look at the flu vaccine right now, the flu vaccine goes anywhere from 30 to 70 effective. If they get 50 , thats a pretty good season for the flu vaccine. 60 , even better. The reason is because the vaccine, even though it doesnt prevent you from getting the flu, if you do get the flu, it prevents you from getting those complications or at least makes it less likely. Theyre thinking the same thing here with the coronavirus vaccine. Even though the effectiveness might only be 50 . That doesnt mean if you get it, its not going to protect you from getting it, and thats what the hope is. Today modernas president said a vaccine by the end of the year is possible. A total of drugmakers are now either in phase three or close to starting it. The verdict is in for former San Francisco 49er and oakland raider dana stubblefield. Hes guilty of raping a woman while using a gun. This was earlier today in Santa Clara County courtroom as stubblefield heard the verdict. Thats where we find nbc bay areas marianne favro. She joins us live at the hall of justice in san jose. Marianne . Reporter garvin, stubblefield barely moved when he heard those verdicts read in court this afternoon. Now, he faces 15 years to life in prison. The former 49er sat quietly wearing a mask as a jury found him guilty of Forcible Rape using a gun and felony false imprisonment. The assault happened in april of 2015. The victim is a developmentally disabled woman who had come to his house in morgan hill to interview for a babysitting job. He took advantage of her and clearly preyed upon her based upon her level of disability and the fact that he had her alone. He, you know, didnt think she would be able to report, didnt think she would be able to be understood, and didnt think shed be believed, and the jury spoke otherwise. Now its going to be in the hands of an appellate court, and were going to do everything we can to make sure that we represent mr. Stubblefield and make sure that he gets a fair due process that hes entitled to. Reporter the allpro defensive tackle was best known for playing for the 49ers from 1993 until 1997, winning a super bowl in 95. District attorney jeff rosen says during the trial, two other women took the stand to testify stubblefield had sexually assaulted them as well. And rosen says the victim was a model of resilience. He said she testified for more than five days during this trial. Reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Thank you, marianne. 200,000, that is the projected bill for cleaning up and repairing the vandalism in oakland over the weekend. A Awesome Group broke away from a peaceful demonstration saturday night in support of Racial Justice and police reform. The vandals smashed windows, set fire to an entrance at the superior courthouse, and spraypainted the walls. They also attacked a police substation, shot fireworks at officers, and targeted the federal courthouse. Oakland police made several arrests. Now, on the heels of that vandalism, oakland city leaders announced legislation today to prevent President Trump from sending federal troops to the city. The president made that threat last week after he sent federal troops to protests in portland, oregon. Oakland officers fear President Trump will follow through now in light of what happened in oakland over the weekend. The proposed legislation directs the city leaders to take any and all lawful means to protect its residents. They want to incite a riot. They dont want to quell a riot. They want to incite a riot. Reporter kayla salazars family was supposed to be preparing for her quinceanera right now, her 15th birthday. But instead the past year has been a nightmare for the family from san jose. Translator i miss my baby so much. Its an uncontrollable pain. Reporter she remembers what she thought was a young man trying to sneak into the gilroy garlic festival last year. Earlier this month, the governor announced he plans to release some 8,000 inmates from california prisons on august 1st, which is this saturday. Thats 7 of the prison population. Lets take a moment now to check in on our weather forecast. Chief meteorologist jeff ranieri joins us right now. Oh, and, you guys, we are getting so lucky this week. If we didnt have these two systems im seeing develop in the pacific, we would definitely be in the 100 to 105degree temperature range tomorrow. So we are getting saved from what we usually see as some pretty brutal summer heat. So theres some good news to start off at least your night, something to think about that way. Well go ahead and get you into the weather maps right now. You can see the two different systems im tracking right now. Thafrp o theyre out in the pacific. Theres no rainfall with it. We have this first one tuesday and wednesday moving close. By thursday and friday, this one moves off towards the north. Again, its going to really help to buffer us from this hot, hot weather in the desert southwest. So overall we will have some isolated heat this week, some 90s, but i do think well stay out of the 100 to 105degree category. So, again, some great news on that front. So lets get you ready for tomorrow morning. We have had that persistent fog pattern the past several weeks. Pretty aggressive pattern of fog for the morning. This has also helped our fire danger. We have this back for tomorrow morning at 8 00 here from the north bay down to the south bay, even possibly a little bit of drizzle right there at the immediate coastline. Then as we roll through the afternoon, we get sunshine away from the coast and i think were setting ourselves up with a good day. So if youre up early, do expect these Cool Temperatures to start. Down to 56 for the trivalley. South bay, 57. And lets bring you over to the east bay, 58 degrees. San francisco a chilly 54. The north bay at 56. As we roll through the day tomorrow, again there will be some isolated heat close to the bay. Youre going to find some of our most comfortable temperatures like 83 in cupertino. Head away from the water, youre up to a warmer 89 in morgan hill. Same thing here for the east bay. 72 in oakland. Then over to concord, pittsburg, and antioch, low to mid90s. The best weather the past several weeks has definitely been the peninsula. Weve really been locked in with a lot of 70s, and you can see thats going to be the case again with redwood city at 79 degrees. San francisco, no hope of 70s. We are locked in with 50s and 60s. In my forecast, were going down to the chilliest in the marina at 59. For the north bay heading up to napa or sonoma will be in the low to mid80s tomorrow. Much, much hotter up near ukiah as weve seen lately. With no ocean breeze, youll be at 99. I really wanted to take a look at my longrange forecast. August 1st through the 15th, a 75 chance hot 100s stay away. The first two weeks of august may not be as hot as we typically see. Only a 10 chance of rain for august. San franciscos forecast, 60s with some morning fog over the next several days. And for the inland valleys, were going to go up. Were going to go down. Were going to go back up and back down again with plenty of upper 80s and low 90s through this week. Janelle and garvin, the great news also is that the wind forecast doesnt look extremely gusty this week, and that will also continue to help our fire danger out right now. See you all at 16. 6 00. Coming up, its hard to tell who was happier to see who. Were there as the animals and visitors at the oakland zoo see each other for the first time in months. A month ago the oakland zoo issued a dire warning that if it couldnt reopen soon, it would have to close forever. Today its wish came through. Reporter normal . Freedom . Not terms usually describing a zoo. But the oakland zoo reopened its gates for the first time in four months. Good because were not cooped um and we get to see the animals. Reporter soo officials caution they were on the brink of closing for good with 1 million in Monthly Expenses and no revenue coming in. Were not like a retail shop or restaurant. You dont turn the lights off and go home. Weve got a living population of animals. Reporter the zoo will limit daily attendance to 2,500 people, enough to keep it going. Good news to families who have been stuck at home. Its been fun to find Different Things at home but its so nice to be able to get out of the house. Reporter visitors now must buy tickets online and wear masks inside. Today raj mathai sat down virtually with today host and weatherman al roquer. It was part of the commonwealth clubs series. And i thought, well, maybe well get some pushback from viewers, and there was none. People welcomed the conversation. They sure do. Ive talked to a lot of people who said, you know what, its almost mustsee tv in terms of just the dialogue. And the best dialogues right now are sometimes the most painful. Yeah, al went on to say that we are seeing more diversity, including in ads, but many people might feel that were living in a postracial society. But he says there is still work that needs to be done. And, yes, much work still to be done. Yeah.
