And with that lens of wanting to serve the community and serve the Farmer Community specifically because i grew up with parents who supported ufw and with the work of ufw and recognized that access to health care and social determinants have a big impact and still continue to impact our community. And thats a lot of what were seeing right now with covid19. Well, two of the finest people anybody will ever get to meet. Tell us about this group. And well talk to you about the efforts there in the valley. Salud para la gente is in watsonville. It was founded a little over 40 years ago with the goal to provide health care to the community. We now serve about 28,000 patients, perhaps a bit more. Weve had more access here in the recent months and we provide comprehensive services that includes family practice, object stetices and guideline geology, behavioral health, dental, optometry, and we provide a lot of social services that darlene can tell you about. Were focused on providing comprehensive care. Thats great work out there. As a former, i raised my hands as we are essential workers during this pandemic. But with that what have you seen as some of the consequences with our farm working communities . Well, one of the huge impacts has definitely been a loss of wages. Also the concern of how to put food on the table. And really a loss for some of the benefits that they were receiving. So really what some of our partners are doing is really focusing on that idea of social determinants in health and really making it a fullscope agency in order to just really address all of their needs and support them even for those who are unable to qualify for the funding that is available. So along with Community Ventures and a lot of our other partners, weve been really focusing on just educating and supporting our farm worker community. I dont ever remember my dad going in for a physical, going in for his annual, going to the dentist, nothing like that. Do you find that still prevalent widespread in that community . Its something that this group has really been focusing. And, yes, were seeing that. And what we really have been doing is making sure that they have access to care monday through sunday. So we do have our agency open in order to have families and the household able to really make sure that they make those appointments, dentist appointments, even if its a chiropractor appointment or counseling. We have been able to give full access monday through sunday. And, amy, what have been your challenges as a center like the one youre operating and how has covid maybe made those challenges a little more difficult . I think theres been challenges and theres also been opportunities to do things differently. Some of the challenges that weve had is with covid you have to work to limit the infection spread and make the clinic safe. So we work to provide quality telehealth services, either through phone or video, and changing our operations quickly so that we could provide that. And then we also developed an outdoor respiratory clinic so that were able to see our patients who need care for sick visits outside and make it safe for staff as well as for the patients so that people can feel safe when they need to be seen. One of the things with covid19 is we know that if people are healthier, theyre going to do better. Theres risk factors or if you have diabetes and obesity are risk factors for covid19. And one of the things weve been folk yu focusing on is helping people stay healthy during this time. We have many people coming in to get information about the virus and to get seen to be tested. And this has been an opportunity for people who dont typically come to the doctor. Were able to reach out and say, hey, you know, youre here for testing. Can we also set you up with a primary care provider and help you maintain your health all the time and doing a lot of education around how can you stay healthy and how can you stay physically distanced . A lot of our patients dont have the opportunity to work from home. And they have to work, as darlene mentioned. So really reaching out to them to help them learn about what are things that you can do in your home and in your daily life to stay as healthy as possible. The biggest challenge with all of this has just been making sure that were still reaching all of our patients. Weve made a big effort to call everybody, to text everyone, to have videos and have a lot of different forms of communication and ways to reach out to people. Because everybody is going to receive things differently. And then also having it available in multiple languages. For us thats primarily, english, and mixed teco. Were talking with sal salud para la gente. Well continue to talk about these important issues in a bit. So stay with us. And were back here on comunidad del valle. We ask you to bear with our technical glitches. We are doing this in a virtual setting. And so youll get a few hiccups here. Were speaking with sal salud para la gente on the show. You mentioned, amy, in the last segment. I come from greenfield. Probably half the population is mixed teco. Youve got to now provide in a third language that is prevalent. That is a challenge, and its not a written language, which makes it challenging as well. Were very fortunate that we have two language activists with us. Theyre interpreters who help us with this. So weve recorded videos that are in mixed teco. And for all of our visits were able to provide translation during the visit, either on the phone or through video or through inperson visits. And weve worked with different local partners to make sure that were providing appropriate services and providing access. And the Community Knows that they can come to access care with us. The request for services has increased. But like many other agencies, the funding might present another challenge to you. Right. So one of the things that we actually have really partnered with as i had previously mentioned and some of our other local agencies, we were able to get a lot of funding for the undocumented, again, because they dont qualify for some of the services that the state is offering. And 350,000 has gone to the community. And that is not including some of the other funding thats been provided to some of the other surrounding counties. So we focused on avenido county and Santa Cruz County. We have been trying to be supportive of our community to make sure that they are educated on really how to stay safe and also to get their basic needs met. Ive asked a lot of questions, amy. You probably have a list of things you want to address. I think some of the things weve seen with covid is really been focused on addressing social determinants of health for quite a while. And impact your health and has really highlighted that for a lot of the country. We hope that we continue to see a focusthat makes a big differe outcomes. And in terms of what were seeing in Santa Cruz County is that 50 of the cases of covid19 are in the Latin X Community. And the Latin X Community only represents about 30 of the county. So its a disproportionate number of cases. And where were seeing that spread is when theres multigenerational households, crowded housing related to the cost of living is really high and housing is really high. And a lot of these people are in essential jobs with low wages. And theres a lot of close contact with crowded housing and thats a big part of what were seeing with this. So i think one thing that were also seeing is that the spread households and its important that people are sheltering in place as much as they can when theyre not at work. Not going to parties between different peoples houses and not you want to go visit your friend or Family Member when theyre sick, but that could potentially expose you and expose the rest of the community. Were really focusing on helping people to shelter in place, reminding that thats important when youre not at work and po wa to wash your hands and wear a mask and social distance. And how is the outreach . How is the county doing . Its their responsibility as well. How are they doing and handling the outreach to make sure that people are aware of the Important Messages that you relate today. Weve been partnering with our local county. Last night we had an event for the thriving immigrant community and one of our physicians speaking with covid. It was i think a trilingual event that was online. We have had really good support from the county with helping to reach out and education available. Thats been helpful. And, in turn, we also are supporting the county with helping with Contact Tracing and case investigations. All right. And what about you, darlene . What Important Message do you feel we need to know . I think that one of the things thats important is the full scope agencies. Were doing medical, dental, optometry and a lot of other services. But we are also offering things such as Food Distribution on fridays from 10 00 to 12 00 p. M. And we have seen a rise in that. And so were still open and able to provide more food to the community. And another thing thats important is that were also wanting to canvass the different local growers and educating our farmers on staying safe and best practices at work as well as at home. Also this Group Offers Free legal aid. So anyone whos interested or has questions or concerns about any issue with social determinants of health, we also have that available. All right. Well, you are doing some fabulous work out in the watsonville area, Santa Cruz County. Any final thoughts before we let you go . Keep wearing a mask and wash your hands a lot. Yes. Shelter in place is very important. Yes, it is. We all thank you very much. Again as we mentioned its very important work. Were glad that youre able to spend some of your valuable time with us here on the show. Thank you so much. Thank you. And well be back with the u. S. Census on your comunidad del valle. Stay with us. Having an open and honest conversation about race is difficult. If youre feeling uncomfortable, thats okay. Here at nbc bay area, we want to help with that conversation, maybe even help you start it on your own. With interviews, suggested books and our series about race in america. Im marcus washington, and i invite you to join, be engaged, and share what you learn with those you know and love. Be a part of keeping the conversation going. Visit nbcbayarea. Com raceinamerica. And were back here on comunidad del valle. Were talking about the census now. Thank you, damian. So good to be here. Thank you. Well, give us an update. Where do we stand as far as the census count . I know we have until the fall. But where do we stand as far as the citys concerned . I just checked the numbers before joining you today. Were happy to report that the city of san jose is at 70 of response. Obviously we want to get to 100 by october 31st. And more importantly before august 11th when the census workers are going to start going door to door to knock on peoples doors who havent responded to the census yet. So, the National Performance right now is at 62 . So we are doing better than the national level. Why do you think that is . Why are we so far ahead here . Its been so far to get the word out the way you wanted to. Why do you think were ahead of the curve here . Well, i think a lot has to do with just the partnerships that we have with our communitybased organizations. We started working on the census in 2018 to Start Building those relationships, start putting together the plans, the outreach plans for each individual population so that each message is very specially crafted for each population in our community. And even with covid and the sheltering in place, we still are doing our job in getting the word out. Obviously, weve had to find other alternative, more creative ways to get the message out. But weve been working very hard with all our key partners in that. How can we reach those other 30 , as you said, hopefully before august 11th . Were ahead of the curve, but we still have 30 to reach out there. You know, that is the challenge now because weve been doing a lot of the, you know, lowhanging fruit type of outreach right now. Weve been doing a lot of social media. Weve been doing a lot of Facebook Live events and interviews and things like that. But really i think that right now were at that point that for that 30 were really going to need continue to have those oneonone conversations with the community. So what were asking is for people who are trusted messengers, who are community leaders, to really start helping us reaching out to those Community Members and start using their voice and influence in getting that 30 of the population to complete the census. And you mentioned the cbos, communitybased organizations, they were so ready to put their foot soldiers on the ground and start pounding the pavement. But, of course, the pandemic has changed everything. Are they still able to do something other than having to knock on doors . You want to go to churches and get the attention, but you just cant do that right now. They are actually. We have so many different groups that understand you know, before covid, they knew the importance of gettingmunity bec thats how we get federal funding for the next ten years. But the pandemic i think really highlighted the importance of a complete count, not only for responding to the pandemic to know where the populations, the populations who are most at risk who need the most services are at, how to get to them, what languages they speak, and so forth, how many children. But i think that need is highlighted. They are the ones who are our foot soldiers right now. Theyre district information via their Food Distribution methods, for example. The Catholic Diocese has been very important. We need to get counted so that our community can recover from this pandemic through the federal funding that we need to have come to us for that. All right. Were talking to the city of san jose census efforts. Well talk more about this continue work when we continue. Stay with us. California phones offers free specialized phones. Like cordless phones. phone ringing big button, and volumeenhanced phones. Get details on this state program. Visit right now or call during business hours. And accessoriesphones for your mobile phone. Like this device to increase volume on your cell phone. phone ringing get details on this state Program Visit right now or call during business hours. And were back with the city of san jose census efforts. The pandemic is causing a lot of problems. But you seem to have overcome in. What happens if we dont reach the other 30 who need to be reached . You know, thats a great question, and its something that keeps me up at night just because i really care about the san jose community. I care about just california in general. Were really getting hit right now. And so for us, really 30 is su. Because we feel that thats a population thats going to benefit the most from the programs and services that are supported through censusderived data. Our schools, for example, they have come theyre getting hit really hard right now. And we really need to make sure that we do our part to ensure the future of our community. So we really need people to participate in the census. And its confidential, and i think thats the key message that we really want to get to the community who may be hesitant or have concerns about participating in it is that it is confidential. Your information will not be shared with any other agency, whether federal, state, or local. And it takes only ten minutes to complete. So its super simple to do. People might think, and i think my parents were of this belief way back when is [ speaking spanish ] it doesnt impact me. But it really does. Its a matter of do i get to have another fire truck at my local fire station . Are we able to respond faster to 911 calls when we have an emergency . Can my kids continue to get the free meals at schools . It impacts everybody. It absolutely does. The roads that are getting worse and worse with time. And absolutely. If you have grandchildren, what kind of programs are you going to have . As you are aging too, what kind of programs are there going to be for the older adults . Its a very you really dont understand the impact of the census unless you start really peeling back. But it really impacts the daily lives of everyone here in california and in the country. And its an opportunity for us to be counted and to have our voice heard. Because we dont need to be u. S. Citizens or have any type of legal status or any type of anything to be heard and counted in the census. So, i think that is a way for us to really show ourselves and gain power back for our community. Another thing that might be helping is before is do we have Internet Access at home for some of these less affluent communities. And now with the learning at home, the Distance Learning methods in schools, a lot of kids were given these mobile devices that allows them to have Internet Service at home. So maybe that might help a little bit in making sure that people are able to go online. Maybe its going to take a fifth grader to help their parents fill out the form if thats what it forms have already been mailed out. We encourage people to check their mail and make sure that if they havent done it to check their mail, see if its still there. You can go online to my2020census. Gov. And its very easy because the census is available in 12 different languages, plus english and spanish and vietnamese are two of the main languages in the san jose community. Those languages are available. Theres also over the phone. You can complete it over the phone as well. Theres different methods to be able to do it. And of course if you dont complete it on your own, you will get visited by a census worker. Thats something that were trying to avoid for the Community Just because of whats happening with the pandemic, also some community populations are concerned or fearful of having anyone from the federal government coming to their door. So, thats why we are encouraging people to selfrespond as soon as possible. Thats what its going to take. Thats how serious it is is it takes a visit even during this covid time because thats how important it is. Thank you so much for your work and good luck and keep us posted in how we do with the other 30 . Thank you, damien. Thank you very much. Thank you for watching us here on comunidad del valle.
