The occasion was an organizing effort to get people from San Francisco and the bay area to travel to the south to assist in the Voter Registration operations that were being conducted primarily in mississippi. Reporter he says over the years he would introduce him at events, or they would dine together. He recalls a strong, principled man. John was the most evidence of love, without being confrontational. Reporter the longtime georgia congressman, who was there for critical moments in the fight for civil rights, and inspired so many. Whenever he saw me, the first thing he would say to me, jeff, my brother, my friend. Reporter in millbrae, Jeff Steinberg reflects on a long friendship. Hes the founder and executive director of the sojourn project. The group takes students into the deep south, retracing the Civil Rights Movement of the 50s and 60s, meeting with key people. Lewis met with 90 of their groups, always generous with his time. He would share with the students the principles of nonviolence. Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. Reporter christie smith, nbc bay area news. Among the many people reflecting on the life and legacy of john lewis tonight, fell Congress Member barbara lee. She said its hard to imagine a World Without him. He always said we had to keep our spirits alive. You know, dont let them get you down. You know, youve got to keep on keeping on, keep your eyes on the prize. Exuberant human being, such a powerful man and such a committed person to see this country live up to his creed. Lee says lewis called on her to continue the fight for equality for all while sick in bed. She says he was a Critical Force in america. And former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice tweeted this earlier today. John lewis was a giant among men. He loved his country so much that he was willing to give his life as a young man to change it. Rice continued, quote, his work is not done but he has fought the fight and finished the race. Its up to all of us to follow his foot steps. Rice is currently at stanfords hoover institution, set to become its droeblthirector in september. Military medics are being called in to help with the surge of patients in hospitals. Some are helping doctors in palm springs. Theyre assigned to covid isolation units at Rancho Mirage hospital. The hospitals icu is full. Theres 80 capacity in the rest of the hospital. Rancho mirage is not the only hospital in Riverside County in need of help. Some 17 hospitals in the county are relying on traveling nurses to cover the surge in covid cases. Lets take a look now at the latest numbers across the bay area. Tonight more than 39,000 reported cases. In the past 24 hours, Alameda County has added 241 infections, bringing the total there above 9,000. Santa clara county has 7,300 cases. And statewide, cases are also on the rise. California now with more than 375,000 cases, almost 7,600 people have died in california because of the virus. Now, the surge in cases across the bay area and the state is raising familiar concerns. Will hospitals be able to care for the potential influx of patients . This graph shows us the number of californians hospitalized with the virus since april 1st. You see we start now in april with just under 2,000. Well, then that rises but then plateaus again. But then it reached a peak in the middle of june. Just over 3,000 before then shooting upwards to where we are now, almost 7,000 patients currently being treated for the virus in hospitals across the state. Lets take a look at where in the bay area now people are being treated. Overall, 672 people are hospitalized across the region. Thats 153 down in the south bay, but you can see that number slightly higher, 157 in Alameda County. That county remaining a bay area hot spot. Getting results from your covid19 test is hopefully about to get faster. The fda gave the green light for Quest Diagnostics to pool samples. The decision comes as the demand for testing is high amid a surge in cases nationwide. And in some cases, people are having to wait a week or more for their results. So what this means now is Quest Diagnostics is now allowed to pool samples from up test for c. Samples need to be tested individually only if the pool result is positive for the virus. The fda said in a statement that this will help get, quote, more tests to more americans more quickly as well as preserve scarce testing resources. Tonight, eight out of nine bay area counties are on the governors watch list, but you can see there that San Mateo County is the only one not on the list. The counties in red have been forced to shut down certain highrisk businesses, including gyms, nail salons, and indoor malls. If San Francisco stays on the list for another day, it too will have to close more businesses as of monday. With reopening plans constantly evolving, sometimes by the hour even, we know it can get confusing, so weve tried to make it easier for you to follow. Weve broken it down county by county. Dozens of Alameda County sheriffs deputies and staffers have tested positive for covid19. The Sheriffs Department says back in march, there were just two cases, and then no more until late june. But in the last few weeks, 38 employees have tested positive. Most of them are sworn deputies. Early this month, about 70 employees were quarantined either because they had coronavirus or they were exposed. Some of the infected deputies work at the santa rita jail, which is trying to curb an outbreak. As the pandemic rages on, many people are still struggling financially. We captured this scene in daly city earlier today. A popup food bank that drew in that city a line of cars. People who showed up received boxes that were loaded with food for free. Firefighters in san jose had their hands full today. Several small fires burned in a creekbed near tours road and capital expressway. No structures were in danger, though. Firefighters are also mopping up another fire near fourth and commercial streets. These flames broke out at a homeless encampment on the south side of 880. Fire crews attacked the fire from both sides of the encampment. They were thankfully able to put it out quickly. Two people are in Critical Condition tonight after a fire in daly city. Firefighters tell us they responded to a fire in a duplex near the intersection of bismarck and mission streets. Crews had to force their way into one of the apartments. Heavy smoke was coming from it. They rescued an unconscious man and a child in one of the bedrooms. They were both rushed to the hospital. Crews tell us the fire started in the kitchen but still they are investigating it. Up next, forgetting waiting days or weeks. The way one man is helping people bypass that frustration to get through the Unemployment Office in minutes. And hoping to hop their way into a world record. The event thats bringing one San Francisco neighborhood together while also staying socially distant. And we saw a warmer start to the weekend with valleys in the 90s, but get ready for some cooler changes which may include some drizzle on the coast, and were watching thunderstorms in the nearby mountains. A closer look when we come right back. First responders rescued a cement truck driver in a remote part of the east bay today. Cal fire tweeted this picture of the scene east of concord this afternoon. The truck rolled over, and the driver was trapped on marsh creek road in contra costa county. Crews airlifted the driver to a hospital. Its not clear what led up to the crash or how badly the driver was hurt. To our making it in the bay series. The Housing Market made a big comeback in june. It was a perfect storm of pentup demand, record low interest rates, and low inventory. According to the California Association of realtors, sales of existing singlefamily homes rebounded 69 last month. Thats the biggest month to month jump on record. Median price of a Single Family home in the bay area, 1 million. Thats up 4. 2 from last year, and statewide home sales rose 42 from may to june. For those who have lost their jobs during the pandemic, there are still long waits, and there are still unanswered calls. Frustrations are mounting about the unemployment department. Now a San Francisco app developer says hes figured out a way to connect people hasslefree. Lets turn to consumer investigator chris chmura. Reporter good evening. So many viewers have complained to us that their calls to the state never go through. A San Francisco app developer found himself in that predicament too and then started coding. Countless unemployed workers are continuously calling for help. I called them every day. Some days i even called over 300 times. Reporter but the state isnt always answering. We know that frustrates people. So i kept trying to call, kept trying to call. Reporter when Andre Woodley couldnt get the state Unemployment Office to take his phone calls, he went to work on a solution. Tapping experience making apps, he created a bot, an automated Computer Program to dial for him. Built it in like 30 minutes, launched it, and was able to connect within five minutes. Reporter now for 30, you can use the bot too. Andre founded a business called auto dial. After you sign up, you can just go about your business. Auto dial will call you when a state worker is ready. Testimonials on the auto dial website say customers waited as little as two minutes. Andre says hes helped about 700 people so far. So whats the secret . Andre says hes figured out edd has two distinct recordings, one if it isnt going to take your call and another if it is. So the bot just calls over and over, possibly thousands of times in a row, until it hears the right recording. And when it does, it calls your phone and connects you to the line. Youre on hold for about five to ten minutes to speak to a rep. Reporter since andres bot is burning up the Employment Development departments phone lines, we inquired. Edd said it would get back to us but hasnt yet. We asked andre if his bot is making the edd situation worse. He said no. The only thing the bot is tying up is the useless recording that gets you nowhere. Sometimes uncle sam frowns on companies for auto dialing calls. So we asks the federal communications commission. Were waiting for a reply. Andre told us his bot is legitimate because it represents a real live caller who really wants to talk with edd. Its the same as an agent or someone calling on your behalf, like lets say a Family Member saying, im going to call you. Its the same as that. The difference is the bot is dialing faster than any human ever could. If you dont want to pay auto dial 30 bucks, we did squeeze one free nugget from andre. The best times to call edd. Lets show you what were seeing right now in San Francisco as we take you outside. Sunshine right now, but that sea breeze is picking up briefly today. We had temperatures close to 70 degrees. 67 right now. Wind at 18 miles per hour. Currently 65 in San Francisco. Out towards the east bay, dublin, you see the smoke in the skies. Well talk about that in a second. 85 degrees after a high up to 93. So the summer microclimate is on full display. Walnut creek, 86. Youre also seeing a bit of that upper level smoke and temperatures in the 80s now after low 90s earlier. In san jose, 78 degrees after a high of 81. So the good news where the smoke is concerned is most of it is higher up in the atmosphere. So in terms of near ground level smoke, concentrations tomorrow with the regional smoke advisory still in the good to moderate range. But the story with smoke usually is its the late night and Early Morning hours, as we see that inversion setup sometimes. You may get a little more spoke free area south of san jose earlier in the day tomorrow. Then as the sun comes up and breezes pick up, well see improving air quality. The sea breeze starting to pick up now. More overnight. Notice how the low clouds make a big come back. Tomorrow morning temperatures in the 50s, and our highs tomorrow very close to what we had today. 80s in san jose. Closer to 90 degrees in morgan hill. Trivalley over towards can cord and antioch still near 90 degrees. Peninsula, 70s and 80s. Coast side up towards San Francisco in the mid60s. Youll notice the north bay not too bad. 70s and 80s around mill valley up towards santa rosa. Whats interesting to watch obviously is the low clouds coming back. Thats going to lead to morning drizzle on the coast. If youre going to head up towards the sierra, watch out for some thunderstorms. We saw that today. Well likely see that tomorrow. Whats kind of interesting about that is some of this later next week may try to drift a little bit closer to the bay area. Right now the good news is its bringing rain to the Pacific Northwest and parts of the sierra where those storms arent causing lightning sparked fires. You get the cooling around the bay. Valleys into the 80s. A chance of thunder in the sierra that we might see some of that try to drift a little bit farther off to the west as we head towards next weekend. One mile total extension of the missing link for the San Francisco bay trail, a commute trail, a recreation trail, and a linear park. It will connect to unconnected pieces of the 8. 5 mile Mclaughlin Eastshore state park. Park leaders also encouraged people to wear face coverings and social distance when visiting the park. A local boxer hosted a special free event for children in oakland today. The stand up and knockout racism event was billed as a black and brown wellness gathering. The focus was on boxing. Kidded were invited to learn a variety of moves from dahlia gomez herself. The professional boxer says she wants to give kids tools to work through the tensions and feelings they face and not just physical tools. I cant just exercise my issues away.
