The other Important Message that weve been repeating is bring your patience because you do have to practice social distancing. You have to spread out your appointments and so things will not run as smoothly as perhaps they were back in january. Yeah, but, i mean, what i perceive is that the people that can come here, they can go very fast because thats what we are trying, not to keep people for a long time here at the consulate. So it takes once they get assisted, like an hour. I also ask the people dont go too early. Some people were arriving too early in advance of their appointment. Dont do that because we wont be able to assist you. There is no more waiting room and were back here on here, so only the people that we comunidad del valle. Were joined bayou jey eugene are assisting. And we dont want you to be waiting in line outside in the rodriguez. Welcome to the show. Streets. Only arrive like 15 minutes thank you very much. Committed to the children in our neighborhood. Now, you just committed a well be back with these message ands talk with our guest about these important topics. Stay with us. Ame in. Coup. You were able to recruit a legend in the music of rock and roll industry. What did you do . Were working on a video for our churchill children. We had to cancel our spring recital because of the covid and weve been working online with the kids. And so i thought it would be nice to do Something Special for them, to celebrate their accomplishment. So we made a video. Everybody socially distanced from each other, all participating together, and we reached out to our friend david whats on your mind . Can you help keep these guys protected online . Hidalgo, who is the legendary singer frontman for los lobos to easy. Connect to the xfi gateway. What about wireless data options for the family . See if he would join you can customize and save. Hes very often on the road, so he cant always join us for special projects. And were back with the but on this one, lobos arent consular general of mexico in touring because of the pandemic. San francisco. So he jumped in right away and we appreciate that very much. The consular here on comunidad all right. Del valle. Before we get into more of the were going to be showing that issues here, on your left is video in its entirety in our that beautiful painting, its a. Next segment. Who should be watching this video . What should they be getting out of it . Well, i think whats important is that we remember that our children need space for joy. Children need space for expression, and were all, our stress. But we need to always cultivate that little magic inside of our kids imaginations and help them cultivate the tools to express that magic. Like a lot of families, mine included, its all Distance Learning and its not the same. My girls dance, and their practice sessions are the way you and i are doing this interview right now. Its all virtual. You dont get the same feel of that facetoface instruction. How difficult has it been for your kids there . It is actually very challenging as you know. However, one advantage that we have is that most of our students have been with us since they were 4 or 5, and now theyre preteens or teenagers. Many of them also attend for their entire lives with their siblings. So what weve done is basically are training them as Little Family groups. So theyll practice at home with their sibling playing music, dancing, things. Thats been an advantage for us. In fact, last month, we took a production crew to the homes of our children and we recorded them on their front porch. We called it the front porch series. That was very successful. Great to see them even if it was from a distance, but it was also a really wonderful opportunity for us all to be together, through production technology. Eugene, tell us, i mean, it would be easy for any group like yours to throw your hands in the air and say, you know what, were in the middle of a pandemic. Were going to cancel classes until further notice. Maybe until 2021. But obviously you all decided not to do that. Well, as i said, ive been doing this for over 30 years, and the people that teach the classes began in our program when they were teenagers. Theyve been with me 25 years. I call ourselves lifers. Were not going to go anywhere and do anything else. It never occurred to us to not do classes. Not only did we do the online classes immediately. We gave the children more individual time and we provide the classes for free. We always have had a modest fee for the classes, but we eliminated that and just took it upon ourselves to find the resources to give these kids the support they need. And its good for us, too. With all the things going on in the world, for me just to see a smile and the expression of a child grow is comfort for me and the teachers as well. What happens to the video, it becomes a Marketing Tool . Its great to put on the youtub and watch it, right . Right. Its a great source of pride for the kids. A great source of pride for their families. But weve always used media to help amplify our message because our focus is on our neighborhood, but were also thinking about everybody in the country, everybody in mexico, everybody in the world. Its a way for us to get together to support culture and support children. You kind of touched on it. How big of a boost is it to have the lead singer to come in and join you in your jam . Well, having dave part of our project, when he comes to our center, we have a little store front that used to be a liquor store. We turned it into a beautiful little cultural center. When dave comes, he takes that 16 foot ceiling and raises it another 100 feet. His creativity and generosity is infectious. Working with dave has taken us to all sorts of levels. Hes creative, but hes also very humble. He ends up thanking us. Hes like a brother, like a brother in the best way. Thats my next question. Ive met him a couple times. He seems quiet, modest, like you said, humble. Not hey, im los lobos. Im one of you guys. Thats right, he is one of us. We love him as a brother. Were really appreciative that, once again, he comes out and makes music with us. All right. Well, were going to watch this video in its entirety in our next segment. Were talking with eugene. Stay with us. Sweer bawere back with eug rodriguez at san pablo here. Some of have lost their Music Program. This is music kids need an avenue, escape avenue. Music is one of those that allows them to expand, maybe some talents that are hidden inside. Yeah, you know, when i started working over 30 years ago in the bay area, we had a very robust Music Program in the richmond school. And it was great, you know. The kids would come in already knowing the basics of the violin, the clarinet or the trumpet. When that fell apart, it just became very difficult for agencies like us to kind of take up the slack and teach kids from the very beginning. Thats not what were designed to do really. But we did. We did the best that we could. And i think that its really important that our children can learn music, learn arts in the school sequentially, from kindergarten all the way till they graduate. Its not an escape, but its also an incredible way for them to learn other subjects as well and to learn about themselves and about their families. Who can sign up, who can come in and say i want to be part of this . Anybody can come and take classes. When were working online, its a little bit trickier. When were working in person, you know, the only really draw back for people is the traffic if youre trying to come from hayward or something. It can become a little maddening. So usually people local, you know, come. But everybody is welcome to come ages 4 and up. Just give us a call. And what is it about it you think you said a lot of your former students are now back and teaching the classes. Sounds like a familia type of environment there. It was. I was fortunate to have music in my home. Not everybody has that in their home. For those who want it, this is a great place for them to feel connected. Kids come when theyre 4. They stay till they graduate. Some keep oncoming back. I think its really about letting them explore the arts. As a discipline, the arts are a discipline, but also in a fun and social way. And one thing you could have done is have the kids shoot their own stuff. Everybody has an iphone. Shoot their own parts. This is highquality video that you have. Well, yes. We have a wonderful network of production people and, you know, we like to do phone videos. We do that as well. We have a lot of very active facebook account and instagram. You know, right now even people who make video are maybe not working as much. So im happy to just make everything look as good as we possibly can within our resources. Of course, people give us a break because they love the work. They love the vibe. Absolutely. Anything else that youd like to share before we let you go, eugene . I just want to thank you for having us on. Los anselmos, our kids and the families, i appreciate the invitation. Thank you so much. And comunidad del valle. Were going to leave you this week with the sounds of los anselmos with dave. Well see you next week. Im sara gore and this is open house. But first we are with indemand la architect, paul mcclean, in the hollywood hills. So here it is, the view. Why people want to live in the hollywood hills.
