We have a great show tonight but before we get into the show, i just do want to say, its so tough this week. Its thursday. And i know everyones everyones at home doing their part, staying at home, which is great. I just wanted to give a special shout out tonight to new york city because we do our show from manhattan in new york city and were very lucky to do our show from there. And so i just want to say, new york city, youre in my thoughts all the time but especially today were losing a lot of lot of great people transit workers, sanitation workers, firefighters, police officers, people that are just doing their jobs and thats all theyre doing and i just want to let them know that they will not be forgotten and what theyre doing is an amazing job. And you make our country proud so thank you so much and just like the sun the sun will shine again it will. And well be back in this city doing the show from there. We have an amazing show tonight. My favorites of all time, rap icons, new york city icons speaking of new york, adrock and mike d from the beastie boys are on the show tonight and their charity is foodbanknyc. Org. Again, thank you winnie for drawing these. Kind of looks like i could have done this one anyway but the beasties have a story called the beastie boys story on apple tv this friday coming out. Also, we have anna kendrick, whose film Trolls World Tour is out also on friday. And universal dreamworks this cool thing where theyre releasing it through tv, so you dont have to go to theaters i think thats a good move her charity shes working with is the Trevor Project, which helps out lgbtq youth communities. And youll see what they do. The great stuff if you go to that website also our buddy sting, speaking of legends, stops by to help me and the roots out. We mightve forced him to do it might have but youll see what we do with classroom instruments kind of, just stuff that we can do around our house with the roots. Its an all new tonight show. Lets start it with the monologue. Jimmy hi, guys welcome to the tonight show at home edition. Well, passover started last night. Jimmy adrock and mike d are two of the three that make up beastie boys. Were going to talk to those guys about their new documentary thats on apple tv called beastie boys story. They are two of my idols and to join me, is another person who loves them so much. And i love him too questlove. Here is me and questlove interviewing adrock and mike d of the beastie boys. Jimmy guys, thanks so much for doing this hi, guys, its me and questlove. Hi. Questlove hi hi, you and questlove [ laughter ] questlove hey, beasts. Jimmy guys, this is beastie boys book. Beastie boys story is coming out on apple directed by spike jonze. Tells the story about you guys but also, have you seen it yet, quest . Questlove hell yeah, ive seen it. Jimmy it is so good. Its directed by spike jonze, but its actually a live a live conversation with you guys but also classic never before seen video from you guys and and its just just to hear your perspective, i thought it was so different and so cool. For a lot of people that dont know, beastie boys before rap, how would you say howd you both meet . You were in two separate bands yeah. Adam was in a band called the young and the useless. Yauch, mca, and myself, we started this band called beastie boys along with john berry and kate schellenbach. So and you know, just after school wed either go to yauchs house in brooklyn or wed practice at johns house on the Upper West Side and then adam was in this band, the young and useless, who were we were, say, i dont know, 15 and 16 years old. And those guys were 14 and 13 years old so they were the next generation they were all [ laughter ] all were a year younger. And, i dont know, adam was just around. And then john berry, who was the guitar player with talent was sick of it wasnt you know, didnt he wasnt into it anymore. And we were like, hmm, what are we going to do . And adam adam was kind of there was that thing, you know when youre 15 and it switches up who you spend every day after school with. And it would kind of get switched up that we were hanging out with adam every day after school anyway, so it was like, yeah, you you play guitar, right . So do you want to be in the band . Jimmy when did you start getting into hiphop well, growing up in new york, you know, it was it was always around so we kind of always loved it since it came downtown. For me at least. Once rap got on the radio, i remember my brother and i hearing rappers delight and being like, what is this . Jimmy ive got cooky puss. Cooky puss. Jimmy right here was that was that the first time you were you were heard in clubs this wasnt on the radio, right . Not really, no. I mean, it was maybe on College College radio but that was like for us, our experience was more that was the first this record we put out was a 12inch. And all of a sudden, djs would play it in these clubs that wed go to so imagine for us when were, whatever it was, like 17 years old. Thats a big game changer when youre in the club and theyre playing your record. You can actually talk to girls at that point. Questlove what would you say . Thats me thats me [ laughter ] we werent even cool enough or suave enough to do that you know what i mean but it gives you the idea that makes you think you could talk to girls at that point questlove hey, question. What wasnt there a story of a travel agency or an Airline Using the backdrop of cooky puss as their commercial or Something Like that . Yes yes ding, ding, ding [ laughter ] ding, ding, ding yes. Its in the book. Its in beastie boys book if anyone wants to go to you know, online and purchase it what page, adam what page . Audiobook who chose the story in the audiobook . Maybe you . I dont who tells the story but do you guys know that we have an audiobook thats really, really, really, really good questlove im obsessed im jealous and obsessed with that book. I thought i was changing the world with my audiobook with sound bites and what not and then, you jimmy it is great. Questlove next level my my book was yo bum rush the show and your book was it takes a nation of millions to hold us back. [ laughter ] jimmy what was the jam on yo bum rush the show . There was one. Questlove public enemy no. 1. Public enemy no. 1 is on there. Questlove timebomb. When you guys did the grammys, you played timebomb. Jimmy oh, i remember that questlove you know how i knew you all were cool when you all came out to present the Grammy Awards and you all played public enemy out your boom box. We did . Questlove i was like, all right, these guys can do no wrong. Jimmy mike was doing mike was doing the wop questlove the wop. Jimmy i just you just tweeted about doing the wop. And that dance never really took off but that was your move its the one dance i can do and it didnt really take off. Well, i have questlove no, the wop took off. If it took off in the hood, it took off in new york and philly, the wop was big. Questlove i mean, the wop the wop wasnt national on a tiktok level. But, you know, if urban city kids are doing the wop, then its official. So, no you were spot on point doing the wop at the grammys that was a moment. My mom and dad were scratching their heads and i was like, yo, theyre playing public enemy right now. That was an important moment for me jimmy, do you have a Remote Control for your record player jimmy yeah ive got a Remote Control. Really . Questlove how many records are in your collection, jimmy, right now . Jimmy good ones . Questlove out of all of our record collections, i will say that only 10 of them are keepable and good. The rest are just taking space i have 190,000 records i only know 300 of them. Jimmy yeah i got like i got like rappin duke somewhere questlove i like rappin duke, personally. Jimmy yeah, im like personally, like hes a nice guy personally questlove no, no, no i just meant or just like, ha ha ha . Questlove its any any song that comes out between i think that between the age of 11 and 15, anything that comes out that you take in, youre going to like, whether its good or not jimmy guys, when we come back, more with beastie boys talk about their movie people used to care. Heck, theyd come all the way out here just for a blurry photo of me. Oh, thats a good one. Wait, whats that . Thats just the lowbattery warning. Oh, alright. Now its all, check out my rv, and, lets go fourwheeling. Maybe theres a little part of me that wanted to be seen. Jimmy welcome back to the tonight show, everybody heres part two of my interview with the beastie boys. Jimmy hey guys, were back with mike diamond, Adam Horovitz and Ahmir Thompson were talking about beastie boys story which is on apple plus im so happy its out because we need content, we need things to watch and we love you guys and its so fun to hear your story and how you evolved and changed and grew and became who you were and i just loved every second of it yeah, quest . Questlove i have one complaint about the movie, though oh, okay. Questlove i personally think that you two dont really bask in the glory of what is pauls boutique. And, like, i know its hard for you to brag and talk about, like, what an artistic achievement it was, but i i just have to say that pauls boutique really changed lives creatively and i feel as though you guys dont give yourselves enough credit for that record hmm questlove so my only slight complaint is the way that you kind of downplayed it like it didnt work. No, that record was everything even more than licensed to ill. I feel that that record was is your magnum opus. I taught college about that record so Everything Else after was just sort of like questlove no no your entire canon is amazing jimmy you keep writing anthem after anthem. But, i mean, like, but pauls boutique, i remember my dad brought it home from work. He stopped at square circle. That was the name of our record store in our mall. Your dad brought pauls boutique home jimmy well, i asked him for it i didnt have a car, i was in high school. So my dad stopped at the mall on the way home and i gave him the money. And he brought it home thats a nice dad jimmy and, dude, it just kept folding and unfolding and unfolding. But it was like, it wasnt only an album for me it was wallpaper. I put it up in my bedroom i was like, what, this is the coolest thing in the world questlove you hung it up as wallpaper . Jimmy yeah questlove i hung up their Rolling Stone review right, that foldout but, we all right can i say one thing though questlove yes. Thank you for the compliment but i guess all we could do is tell our story within that and i think the way what our story in making pauls boutique is like we put everything, you know, since the nba season is not a season anymore, ill put it in basketball terms we left it all on the floor. Like, we we put every idea that we had into that record every sample, everything that we thought was funny to each other. And we you know, its like that thing where you work really hard on a record and you think its dope. Thats when the word dope was big. Questlove hmmmm its not so big anymore questlove itll pass its good. We thought, all right, we made this record thats thats dope. And, you know, and like we talk about in the show, put it out and its crickets. So our experience so, i mean, crickets being a term for when nobody gets it and nobodys on board. And then so, its weird its funny to us that then years later, theres a lot of people like yourself who love it and talk about how it affected them. Questlove changed their lives. But adam and i are kind of like, were like, why didnt you buy it when it came out then questlove me alone, that album, like, really made me want to create music, you know when Rolling Stone gave yall that lead review, i hung that above my bed and read it every morning. You know how people put postits there like, i wanted to create something so great and someone say words about what i created like, i put that lead Rolling Stone review of you guys, that axl rose issue, i put that on my bed and read it every morning. How do you remember all of this stuff and do you have a picture of your bedroom from then because we need to put it up on questlove you want proof [ laughter ] i just want to see what your bedroom looked like. Questlove anyway, i didnt mean to take it over, but im just saying that you guys dont give your genius for pauls boutique enough credit. And i want you well think about that. Well interflect on that jimmy what do you consider your best work do your opinions differ . No. I dont think its not that i think anything less of pauls boutique. Although i do remember the things that i and adam and i talk about this all the time, and probably ahmir, its probably the same for you. What we remember about our records are not the things that are good about them. Its like, oh, why did we have to put like theres a song on wait, whats the song on pauls boutique . What comes around . What comes around. Like, we clearly, we shouldve left that song off the album every album has that. Questlove is it the scatting at the end . The scatting whats that questlove with the scatting at the end of the song scatting . Probably questlove you guys were scatting at the end of what goes around. Jimmy doodoodoodoodoo. Questlove that meant everything to me like, you think its dumb. It had the scatting on but not the song is a brick its a dud of a song questlove i mean, you know, one mans dud is another mans life change. Jimmy i want to talk about quickly the documentary. Is it a documentary . What do you call this . A story . A live documentary. Jimmy basically it takes a a really, very emotional turn when he starts to talk about yauch and i understand that. Obviously, you guys, i cant even imagine losing your friend like that where you had your whole career together since you guys were kids but you talk about the line that he wrote in sure shot and how much that kind of it wasnt that big of a deal when he wrote it, right no. What we were saying was at the time when we were recording the song and the record and everything, we just we would always just write our own lyrics and then just say a a couple, and the next person would say a couple, and wed just sort of would get feedback from each other, how or what we thought. Most of the time we were just like, okay, im going next and so when yauch said a a specific line, it wasnt a a big deal but when we wrote this book and put the book out, we started doing interviews for it. And almost every person asked us about these feminist lines that yauch wrote in a song 20whatever years ago. Jimmy yeah i think that meant something to spike, to spike nz because he wanted to you know, that was important to him to put in the movie and to discuss. Transformations. Jimmy yep. Thats exactly right do you think sense of humor i want to say is probably one of my favorite things about beastie boys you guys always were either ahead of the joke or just understood comedy. You guys worked with a director called nathaniel hornblower. Yauchs uncle, yeah jimmy oh, sorry, i forgot they were related. And when he jumped up on stage, i dont know if you guys remember this, but, for oh, yeah. How can you forget he didnt jump up on stage. We were all backstage, so he just walked beside us. Jimmy he could jump if he wanted though, yeah . He bum rushed the stage, though he just bum rushed he just ran out there. Sorry, i interrupted. We were about to actually play at that awards show jimmy yeah and he was backstage and he ran out. Was michael stipe, was he surprised . Yeah. Its great in our film when you watch it i still enjoy watching how Michael Stipes reaction to hornblower when hornblower blows up the spot and bum rushes his whole the whole situation. cause stipes kind of like trying to be cool with it but hes not really cool with it and then he doesnt know, like, is hes supposed to be cool with it or is it part of the show he just doesnt know jimmy im glad that he got out that he had the ideas for star wars and everything everything. Everything. Jimmy guys, i appreciate you taking all this time to talk to us you know we love you and im speaking for quest, im assuming you love them yeah, think about it beastie boys story this friday on apple. Check out the book, check out the audible. And pick up all their records. Theyre just the greatest. We love you guys you know, you guys are our favorites. Thank you so much for this, especially during this time. I know we ask everybody if they have a charity that they want to mention, and you guys chose food bank of new york city yeah. Jimmy so well put up the website for that, the smallest amount feeds goes a long, long way thank you guys so much for doing this thanks for doing it thanks for having us its so nice to see you guys jimmy thanks, quest. Jimmy im so happy that youre doing our show. Thank you so much. Where are you and how are you doing . Im in my house in l. A. Im doing amazing, obviously, as is everyone, i dont know [ laughter ] jimmy what are you doing to spend the time well, i feel like one weird thing thats happening is like, im my own, like, kid and mother like, i feel like a kid because theres, like, nothing to do and ive got all like this pent up energy. So ill try to be responsible and do emails and, like, clean something. And then ill have this conversation with myself, like, mom, can i, like, do some legos and watch west wing like yeah, mom says its okay. Like, yeah, all right. [ laughter ] jimmy are you doing a lot of legos im doing too much lego i have never really done like legos, like the lego kits. Turns out legos are amazing. Jimmy theyre kind of unbelievable its so much fun. It shouldnt be this fun im a grownup. Whats happening jimmy what are some of the things you are making with legos . Im doing like a couple projects at once i just finished the millennium falcon and im doing jimmy no thats the biggest one yeah, well i think the death star is the biggest one, actually i think [ laughter ] jimmy youve become like a a lego nerd. Yeah, actually, i think youll find that check this out jimmy holy mackerel hi, oh, thats just hi jimmy oh, my gosh. Its beautiful i love it im like weirdly attached to it like, obviously im going to, like, take it apart, and im going to like, you know, give it to a kid when this is all over but, like, its hard for me to not want to, like, build a a shelf of like all the legos that i made. Because i do feel like weirdly proud of it. Like when you make an ikea piece of furniture and youre like, maybe im a carpenter. [ laughter ] maybe im amazing at all this. Jimmy speaking of movies, what a great segue Trolls World Tour. You know i dont know if youve been on the show since the first trolls. I think you have but, you know, youre like the beatles in my house to my kids because they listened to you all the time get back up again im sorry im so sorry im so sorry [ laughter ] okay, okay no, no, no can i just Say Something can i just Say Something jimmy yeah because this is something that justin i know, youre all of our americas friend, justin timberlake. That justin, like, specifically talked about, you know, that its a movie that your kids are gonna watch a lot. And he, like, wanted to make sure that parents didnt hate him too much because theres like a certain thing that happens when parents are like, oh, my god, like, trolls, like my kid loves trolls. and theres like a tone and a facial expression that says like, genuinely im happy that like my child is experiencing joy. But i will kill you. [ laughter ] so im sorry about jimmy no, no, no it is a great thing. Is it odd promoting a movie from without going out and actually going to shows and promoting it and going on well, its weird. It makes me appreciate like how much work goes into, you know, producing a show and, you know, getting everybody together because you think like, its easier from your house but like, im my own, like, camera woman and i, you know, i had to find my psychotic blank wall. And jimmy well done. And i did, like, you know, i have to, like, do my own hair and makeup well, actually, i still have a a dress that my, like stylist, picked out for me to wear on your show, in the before times jimmy yeah so im like wearing the dress. But im wearing it with sweat pants on underneath. [ laughter ] but, but theres heels why the heels, anna . Why . When they told me that this is, you know, what they were going to do, you know, rather than, like, delaying the release of the movie, you know, that they were going to, like, find a way because this movie is only supposed to be in theaters now. So, you know, to figure out a way to get this movie into your house, to have the Movie Theater come to you, i think was probably no small task im not like being told to say this, but shout out to universal and dreamworks for figuring that out. Super [ applause ]wanted the movie to be in theaters. We wanted everybody to be able to experience it in a theater in a crowd and, you know, its if youre in the house and youre stuck with maybe your kids are restless or anxious. Jimmy yeah, you think . Theyre so fun and so colorful and honestly, when i found out we were going to do that, even though its such short notice to try and figure that out, it just made my heart so happy. Jimmy i think in a weird way, it makes the movie more special because were all at home right now doing our part and staying at home, which is smart. Yeah. Jimmy to be with your family, its were going to have a movie night its like, were looking forward to it. Its like a date night it comes out friday. And i cannot wait. Trolls world tour. Anna kendrick, we ask every guest that comes on our show, and thank you so much for coming on, to talk about a a charity that is close to them or something that you like to bring attention to and you chose the Trevor Project. Yeah, so the Trevor Project is this hotline and its this amazing resource for lgbtq youth. When they are struggling, they can reach out, and trevors kind of there and theyre a Mental Health resource and obviously, a time like this more than ever its just an amazing resource that exists.
