Tonight, that fire is 60 contained, and all the evacuation orders have been lifted. And this is a common cause, illegal fireworks are believed to have started this small fire in livermore. It happened around 2 30 a. M. It burned a couple of acres before being contained. The fireworks have started dozens of fires across the bay area. Lets turn things over to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Jeff, the temperatures have certainly been pretty hot, and were going to be probably seeing a lot more of this fire danger. Its just going to continue until we get those first storms in here, the high heat, the low humidi humidity. The one good news for firefighters lately, with a lot of these spot fires cropping up is the wind gusts. We havent seen them too gusty for an extended period of time and that has enabled them to get a hand on this fire activity. Tonight on our microclimate forecast, you can see those mostly clear skies from downtown san jose looking off towards the d dista d distance. July can tend to get hot, but to compare it to record heat. The records today, 88 in santa rosa. We would have had to hit 102 to break a record. Concord, 10. Thankfully not that hot. If we did not have the ocean sea breeze, close to recordsetting temperatures. So there is a little bit of good news in this forecast. Tomorrows numbers go up, but well stay out of the triple digits. I have us up to 95 here in obje antioch. 92 in morgan hill. Cooler ocean breeze book at the coast 60s over to San Francisco. My extended forecast, keeps it dry with sunshine and 90s the next several days. And by next wednesday, we go down to 89. So with this dry weather, i did want to give us an update on the reservoirs. You can see some of our local reservoirs, 79 at laguntas. San pablo, 73 . So not that bad there because of some strong rains way back this past season, at least a few good storms. Then the season before that, last year we also had some good rain. And our state reservoir, central and southern reservoirs around 100 to 110 normal. A drop at Lake Oroville at 75 . But we dont have any water rehave you ber restrictions right now. Coming up, well look at the microclimate forecast and well see if we can get lucy up from her nap. Shes wandered back behind me. Shes taking a nap. Well try to get her up. Thats a dogs life right there. Lucy there she goes. Thanks, jeff. Thanks for bringing a smile to our face, jeff. Up next, 48 hours away from their first game. The earthquakes, the first Bay Area Team to return to action. Janelle wang rejoins with us one of the teams top players. Its go time. Mls is back. The San Jose Earthquakes play their first game this friday against seattle, and the mls tournament taking place in orlando. The earthquakes are healthy and covid free. You cant say that about some of the other teams. Dallas had to withdraw this week, because ten of their players tested positive for covid19. Earthquakes, no one has tested positive. Big reason why, unlike other teams, the players did not practice together until they arrived in orlando two weeks ago. Everyone tested negative before boarding the plane and everyone has tested negative since then. They are staying in a bubble. They practiced together, hang out together and cannot believe their complex in orlando. Its go time. You have the first game on friday. How is it going, how are you gearing up for it . Yeah, im excited. Weve been in orlando for around two weeks already. And the environment has been great. Its been giving us an opportunity to train as a team, which was something that we werent able to do for a really long time. So to have everything come together the way it has is exciting, and i actually just got out of a team film session where were figuring out how to go about the game. So its getting real, and were ready to go. What do you do in your free time . I know you guys are practicing like crazy. Afterwards, you guys also hang out together, you have a game room, you can socialize and mingle together but you cant mi mingle with anyone outside of your team. Were on the first floor of the hotel, so we have a game personally, i have been ames, running some youtube training sessions as well, which has been a lot of fun. So ive had the opportunity to coach kids across the United States from my hotel room here in orlando. In his spare time, he teaches the kids all the tips and tricks of beinging a Major League Soccer player. Kids are in lockdown, many staying at home. Soccer may be a team sport, but Thompson Says you have to build that foundation of ball mastery. So just a lot of time with you and the ball. Dribbling and juggling. I dont know how to play soccer, but i may sneak on to his youtube page and learn the tricks, and get some exercise. But lets watch the pros. I want to see that. I cant wait. It sounds like a tiktok video. So big game friday, earthquakes versus the sounders friday night. Theyre going to have a drive through like a drivein movie theater. You can drive in and watch the game on a big screen, but you have to watch from your car. Up next at 6 30, the clock is ticking for students and parents and teachers. Were following breaking news in San Francisco. Mayor london breed is awaiting covid test results after attending an event with someone who knew that they were positive. Mayor breed announcing moments ago she just tested herself and has been limiting public will limit Public Events in the next ten days and is following all Health Precautions such as wearing a mask. Well follow this story and provide updates on air and online when we get them. Also right now at 6 30, open defiance from new yorks governor, andrew cuomo dismissing President Trumps demand that the nations schools fully open. He says School Openings are state decisions, period, and the president has no authority to overrule them. Governor newsom is also pushing back. Today, the president wants to push to fully reopen the nations schools, which doesnt mesh with cdc guidelines. So the white house is writing its own rules, facing a record increase in covid cases. The administration will issue its own reopening map. This comes after President Trump attacked a blueprint from the centers for Disease Control as too tough and too expensive. If schools dont reopen, the president threatened to withhold federal education funds. Its absolutely essential that we get our kids back into classroom for inperson learning. Were going to be looking for ways to give states a strong incentive and encouragement to get kids back to school. And its a polarizing issue. A lot of parents are for it or against it, creating tension around the country. The Vice President says new documents preparing communities for School Reopenings will be issued by next week. San franciscos Public Schools now know what theyre supposed to do to make it safe for kids to return. The health depth released recommendations today, including mandatory masks for all students, and having the teachers move between classrooms instead of the kids. Heres a closer look at what school will look like this fall. Reporter we could expect to see face coverings, outdoor classes if possible, assigned desks for physical distancing. Despite these specifics, its still unclear what class will look like in the fall. The unknown is the hardest part. Its like its really challenging. Reporter Kimberly Rosario teaches high school in San Francisco and has concerns about the possibility of returning to a classroom setting and for her son, who attends school outside the city and who has Underlying Health issues. It is not perfect by any means, and i know its not perfect. Reporter today, the department of Public Health released guidance for safety for inperson instruction possibly in the fall if conditions allow. That includes face coverings, screening people who enter, and frequent cleaning. We recommend staggered schedules in school to prevent the mixing of cohorts in hallways at lunchtime, at arrival. Top of line for virtually everybody has been around safety and wanting to know what our plan is, which we havent totally come up with. Reporter mark sanchez is president of the board of education. There are town halls and working groups as the district plans what learning will look like in the fall and if and when students can return. Mainly a small cohort are able to go back at the beginning, august 17, and most are at home, thats a hybrid model but we dont know what it will look like exactly. Whatever we end on will be the safest route that we can take for our families, students and the staff. Reporter its an issue districts are facing across the state and one thats become increasingly political. Troy flint is with the California School Board Association and says many districts are considering a hybrid model, but there are still many unknowns. Thats probably the most common configuration, but many districts have not announced and some are juggling multiple plans. And things are still really rounding into shape. Thats another area of concern as we look at resuming school here in a month or so. Reporter some educators expressed concern about proper ventilation, even transportation two tow and from school. As it stands right now, schools are not allowed to start inperson instruction just yet. Fall learning is expected to start august 17. In San Francisco, christy smith, nbc bay area news. We mentioned the budget cuts at stanford. A university with an endowment of 27 billion. Stanford is among the richest schools in the world. But today, it cut 11 nonmajor sports. Among them mens volleyball and fencing. Many of the athletes past and present are shocked, including alexander, who led stanford to two ncaa titles in fencing and won the silver med el at the 2016 olympics. He joins us from his home in San Francisco. You have given your heart and soul to stanford athletics. Any indication this was coming and your thoughts this eving . Absolutely not. There was no indication of this coming, not to the alumni, not to the coaches and not to the athletes themselves. The first thing i did when i heard the news is call the stanford coach. She told me she was notified 20 minutes before they were supposed they emailed the students that they were having a in 20 minutes to announce the news. So that 20 minutes later, that they could release the news to the public that they are cutting these 11 sports. I can see how frustrating it, is alexander. The Athletic Department is facing a 25 million deficit. What would your suggestion be to save these sports or help with the deficit . I think alumni outreach is extremely important. When stanford fencing had a chance of being cut in 2010, we were notified a year in advance about this situation and able to raise, you know, several Million Dollars in 11 months to continue the fencing program. Without that outreach and notification, obviously this wasnt the case for these 11 sports at stanford. Im extremely disappointed that is the case. Its a 27 billion endowment. Stanford in their defense says the endowment is separate from the Athletic Department. Do you buy that, and is it frustrating . It is frustrating for me. You can do the math. 25 million out of 27 billion is what, 0. 09 or Something Like that. It doesnt sound like a very good reason to me. Its just beyond the monetary reasons. It is the money reasons, we have a chance at raising that money to get these programs going again. If its not about that, we need to assert ourselves to say that stanford, these sports need to be varsity and olympic sports. I represented stanford in the olympics, and its disappointing to see them promote my results and use me as an image of stanfords representation at the olympic games, when theyre doing things like cutting stanford fencing and also not giving adequate aid to a lot of these sports to start with. You mentioned the olympics. Not only in london and rio and in theory next summer er imer. Stanford gets a lot of mileage out of you. You know, im not the perfect person to ask this, but i do think that the ncaa system has, you know, been able to exploit athletes in the past. But i also know the system, and it gives opportunities for people like me and fencers who are a smaller sport to have these opportunities to attend a major university. I loved my time at stanford. These were four of the most amazing years of my life. I love everyone in the stanford sports defendant, whether the trainers or medical or the coaches. You know, i wouldnt trade those years for anything. Thats why im so up in arms about this. Because i want these opportunities to be given to athletes that come after me, not just in fencing, but in the 11 sports that have been cut, as well. Weve seen you grow up in San Francisco, and then in stanford, as well. Final question as we wrap it up, any resourcourse here, any opti to get these sports back on . Absolutely. Right now, im mobilizing a group of alumni from these 11 sports to come together to form a response, and to try and find out to figure out action we can take to help save some of these programs moving forward. We have already reached out, as i said, to rowing, fencing obviously, volleyball, and many more are already coming in. So any kind of support, whether it be an email support or any ideas as to how we can save these programs are greatly appreciated in these times. Thats where im going to be focusing on in the immediate future. Alexander, thanks for your time and good luck. I know youre continuing to train to get that gold medal next summer at the tokyo olympics. Thanks for your time this evening. Thank you so much, raj. Up next, combatting gentry fi case. A bay area citys plan to make it in the bay. Affordable housing projects are ramping up in berkeley. This shows what this Community Building will look like, just blocks from the ashley b. A. R. T. Station. The goal is to slow gentrificati gentrification. Sometimes that means living in areas of pollution, other times it means having to commute far away to your job and drive your car and put gas out. So now we have Environmental Justice being memorialized, because this building was built through cap and trade funds. Millions of dollars from the state with bond money will launch the project which will break ground next year. In these 17 weeks of sheltering at home, weve come to a place called lucy wednesdays. Lucy is somewhere in that living room. Lucy, come here. Yes, there she is. Come on up, up up up. There she is. She knows i have the turkey bacon treat, you guys. Well say hi to lucy again and check in on the full forecast coming up. You want a treat . Well get you one. Im sure she does. More than just one, jeff. A group of travelers went nowhere. What are the details here . You got me at 100 grand. They went nowhere, thats the problem for that 100 grand. We hear almost every day from folks whose flights and other travel plans are in limbo because of the pandemic. That included a group of people in the south bay. They paid a travel agency six figures or an African Safari to take place in may. But it became obvious their trip of a lifetime wasnt going to happen. All of us two are aged 65 and over were having anxiety attacks for the last three months before we canceled our trip. His friends turned to us. Protective plexiglass is up in the lobby, social distancing marks on the floor and the air inside the building is filtered. All the exhibits feature snoopy, Charlie Brown and the rest of the peanuts gang. Staff members spent the threemonth shutdown going everything they could to make it safer. Capacity is limited, though, and masks are a must. That will be a fun little trip for the family. And theres the lucy we know and love. But is she bossy like lucy in the peanut gang . Shes so sweet. She is very bossy sometimes. Its like, its time for dinner. That means turkey bacon treats are her favorite. Hes been standing watch, but she wanted to say hi to you guys. And all of her fans out there. Yes, every time we get her on, i get lots of emails about all the other dogs that are watching, too. Hello to everybody back at home with your dogs watching tv, as well. Lets get you into that microi o microclimate forecast. We have clear skies looking back towards San Francisco. A little bit of fog right there near the immediate coastline, as she looks for more treats down here. Cooling off as we head through the next couple of hours. Its going to make it real comfortable across the bay. Tomorrow, we have this area of High Pressure down there across the desert southwest. Thats trying to edge just a little bit closer here towards the bay area. But we still have that cool, foggy breeze at the coast and mild air to the north. As ive been saying, if it wasnt for those two components, temperatures would be a lot hotter for us. So as we bring you into that forecast, tomorrow morning, starting off here with low 60s, a mix of sun and clouds. 60 for the south bay peninsula at 62. East bay 64. San francisco, coming in at 60. And then as we move through the day tomorrow, notice the temperatures in the south bay. I definitely have some low 90s coming back in from melpedas to gilroy. So keeping that fire danger up there, but the cruz fire down near gilroy is at least 60 contained. Thats just due to the lack of major winds. Tomorrow, i only see wind gusts up to 20 miles per hour, so that is further good news for the firefighters. In the east bay, hot here, going up to 96 in pittsburgh, 95 in concord. Look at the difference it makes with that bay breeze. We are 78 here in oakland. 80 in hayward. For the pernninsula, 85 in palo alto. 71 in the mission. Over towards the outer sunset, 64 degrees. Lets take you up to the north bay and you can see marin, napa, sonoma counties, upper ya80s, l 90s. 93 in santa rosa. As we take you to that sevenday forecast, you can see in San Francisco, well stay dry. Temperatures in the 60s next selfdays. No big changes. Very stable weather pattern for us. Right here across the inland valleys, we are going up to the low and also the mid 90s as we head through the next couple of days and dropping down to some 80s. I know a lot of you have been doing stuff in your gardens, but if you have still been looking for more projects to do, maybe plant a tree. They help to remove Carbon Dioxide and clean the air and water. Look at these facts. One three or all of the trees in San Francisco every year help to save 2,627 million gallons of storm run off. So nothing to do, kind of just sitting around with nothing on that todo list. Maybe plant a tree. Okay. Ive got to give lucy another treat now. I had one in my hand as i was doing the whole forecast. It was hard to concentrate there, because she was going after that treat the whole entire time. Ever get tempted to eat one of those bacon cheddar bites . They sound delicious. She has these chicken rollup things. They smell really good. We digress. You never know. Bye, guys. Shes beautiful. Bye, lucy. Up next, we have trouble in 49ers land. The star player wants out. We see her, we know good things are around the corner. This is her 13th season with the giants. Opening day is july 23rd at dodger stadium. Trouble with the 49ers. Rahe Raheem Mostert wants out. This comes after months of unproductive talks with the 49ers about a pay raise. Right now, he makes about 2. 5 million. He led the niners in rushing yards and touchdowns during the regular season, but then remember this, he saved his best against the packers in the nfc title game at levi stadium where he set the 49ers single game playoff records with 229 yards and four touchdowns.
