Some because of fireworks paired with smokes from fireworks is causing air quality issues this morning. 56 degrees. Wind speeds at 17 Miles Per Hour in walnut creek. 65 degrees already and we will be warm again. Just to give you an idea about five degrees warmer in livermore, san jose a few degrees there. Todays micro climates highs in the 70s, 80s and 90s. A spread of good old micro climates. Now San Francisco yesterday did hit a high of 76. And here is what im talking about air quality, down to the south moderate. In the east bay its unhealthy especially for sensitive groups. Ill go into more detail on that coming up in a few minutes. Kira . As vianey mentioned, we are following dozens of fires erupting across the bay area. Many likely caused by illegal fourth of july fireworks. All but one official fireworks displays were called off this year to stop the spread of covid19. It does appear people, residents, made their own shows igniting brushfires across the bay. We begin with breaking news out of the south bay where families this morning are being evacuated because of a 100acre fire in morgan hill. Cal fire is battling this east of morgan hill where 25 homes are threatened by the park fire. East dunn avenue and jackson oaks drive are closed. The fire i go niggnited around midnight. Moving uphill in steep terrain, difficult access for fire crews. Our objectives are to keep them from crossing the ridge. Evacuations are in place. Cal fire was awaiting sunrise this morning so they could deploy their air tankers and make aerial drops. Hopefully the planes will make headway in the firefight this morning. And in san jose a fire in a park forced a closure of highway 101 overnight. This is at watson park near downtown san jose and japantown along 101. The fire put up a lot of smoke. We were able to see another Vantage Point from a Traffic Camera. The flames and smoke are on the left side of your screen along with fireworks displays. The chp says the fire spread to trees right next to southbound 101 forcing them to shut down several lanes at mckey road. Again, no official word on what sparked it. And in San Francisco dozens of fires as well. One of the largest fires in the city last night was this one, a fouracre fire at mclaren park. You can see the intense flames and people even watching from homes below in visitation valley. Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to the homes. The cause is under investigation, but crews suspect it was ignited by people setting off illegal fireworks. And more illegal Fireworks Shows illuminating the skies above the east bay last night. This is video from our Traffic Camera in emeryville. Contra costa county fire had its hands full. In fact, at one point crews were battling 14 fires at the same time yesterday. The fire chief tells us they were prepared since may 1st. The county has been experiencing a 400 increase over the same time last year and an increase in illegal fireworks usage even before the Holiday Weekend began. Dozens of the fires, particularly over the last three to four weeks now, are directly attributable to fireworks usage. Crews tell us, unfortunately, the fires happened on a day and night when fire danger already is high. Arson investigators are still at the scene of several fires. Now to a tense confrontation in martinez. Just yesterday activists painted a large black lives matter mural in front of the county courthouse. The city gave permission for the message to be painted there. But within a matter of hours of its completion a man and a woman showed up and started painting over the letters with black paint. The pair started arguing with activists shouting that all lives matter, and Police Killings are the result of suspects resisting arrest. Witnesses tell us they were incensed. I was thinking i cant believe that this is happening right in front of my face. I expected something to happen. I didnt know what it was. When i saw this happening, i got a little bit excited and i tried to make sure to get in and film everything that happened. Martinez police are now investigating. Activists were able to record the license plate number of the couples truck and repaint their mural. Social justice, of course, is on the minds of many people on nbc day weekend. There were protests across the bay area including these in alameda and oakland. We were able to speak with some organizers. The whole point was like a new orleans jazz funeral for all of the black lives lost to police brutality, Racial Injustice as well as senseless violence like gun violence. Some of the emphasis was around justice for Breonna Taylor and improving prison conditions. Now to covid19 coverage, a major setback for reopening in the south bay. Santa clara countys request to move into the next phase is being rejected. County Health Leaders put in a request with the state a few days ago on thursday. It would have allowed businesses like hair and nail salons and gyms to reopen and large social gatherings to resume. The new order was hoping to take effect july 13th, but that plan is now on hold. The county says it is still talking to the state about that application. And Santa Clara County is one of the 19 counties on governor Gavin Newsoms watch list. These counties are considered high risk and in need of closer monitoring. Just yesterday the state removed marin county from the list after adding it on friday night. Californias top Health Officer says labs in california are overwhelmed with covid19 testing, so one doctor is now telling them to prioritize tests for people in hospitals, longterm care facilities, and inmates in prison. Take a look at the states testing in the past week. 1. 3 million californians were tested for the virus. More than 85,000 of them tested positive, thats a rate of 6. 5 . Now to shock and confusion, thats how some south bay Restaurant Owners say theyre feeling after state agents informed them they need to shut down. We have Surveillance Video of those agents with alcoholic Beverage Control, abc, walking into the ladera grill friday night in morgan hill. Were told several other businesses in the area also were targeted. Its part of governor newsoms crackdown to make sure businesses are covid compliant. The agents told the restaurant to shut down or theyll be cited. But the restaurant was open. Owners say they have adhered to social distancing and safety protocols. They say theyre confused and angry because the county does allow outdoor dining. I have two guys in costume come in and tell me that i have to shut down, or my customers will be cited and i will be cited and my managers will be cited. Its irritating. Its unprofessional. Abc says in a statement the county had not received variance to open. Santa clara county says it is aware of the incident but isnt weighing in on whether it thinks there are violations. And an update on the sheraton fire near sunol. Cal fire says it has burned 85 acres, is 75 contained. High winds were a big problem yesterday afternoon. Crews remained at the scene throughout the fourth of july night. No word on the cause of that fire. And back to getting fireworks off the street, a special Enforcement Team with the Concord Police department confiscated all of these illegal fireworks. Weve seen similar busts in recent days, and people were allowed to relinquish their fireworks without penalty. 7 09 right now. Much more ahead on today in the bay. We take you out to washington, d. I want to jump right in here because, unfortunately, we wish we could have you for the entire hour but we have you for a mere moment. Regarding reports of russians paying afghan fighters to kill american soldiers, wondering if you think congress is likely to look into that allegation. And if so, how seriously . I think the House Democrats are certainly looking into it and the intelligence committees on both sides, but the Republican Leadership and the senate are resisting it. Youre seeing suspected politicalization of intelligence with the only leadership in the intelligence community. The fact the president was not verbally briefed on this is astounding to republican and democrats and also to former Foreign Policy officials, nonpartisans from both republican and democratic administrations because this involves russia, the safety of u. S. Troops. They thought it was serious enough, credible enough to protect our troops, to take action there to hold an Interagency Task force meeting to tell the allies but not to tell the president of the United States and not to warn him before he got on the phone with vladimir putin. It is raising big concerns. And shifting gears a little bit, covid19 largely has relegated Presumptive Democratic president ial nominee joe biden to hiding. People calling it his basement for the past three months. Do you think if this continues in the fall we really only have four months until the election. What impact do you think it would have on the Biden Campaign . In the past week he gave a major speech on the pandemic. He reacted in real time to the president s comments after the employment numbers where the president was, as he put it, spiking the football on the 50 yard line because of the Economic News for the 50 million Americans Still unemployed. Hes coming out more. The other argument is hes doing very well in the polls, leading in the polls in battleground states and the national polls, even though polls are unreliable. The president seems to be running against himself with a lot of unforced errors in the last month. Hmm. Well, i guess well continue to see if he continues to make his face shown and his voice known over the next couple of weeks and couple of months. Andrea mitchell, thank you so much for joining us this morning and for your insight. Thank you very much. Good to be with you. Be sure to join andrea for this mornings meet the press. Now to, gosh, i woke up and my twitter feed was full of kanye west because he is announcing he wants to be president. He is known as a trump supporter and is announcing he intends on running in november. West tweeted yesterday saying, quote, we must now realize the promise of america by trusting god, unifying our vision, and building our future. I am running for president of the United States. 2020vision. Elon musk even told kanye that he has his vote. You may remember west has done this before. In 2016 he said he would run for president in 2024. All right. Now back to more relief for Small Businesses hurt by the coronavirus. President trump signed into law a temporary extension of a Subsidy Program that pushes the deadline for applying for the Paycheck Protection Program to august 8th. Lawmakers created it in march. It began with 660 billion. Theres still about 130 billion available to businesses. And in San Francisco it certainly wasnt your typical fourth of july. Beaches were open but the parking lots werent. And you had to keep moving no lying around. This was the scene at baker beach. A fair amount of folks enjoyed the day, but nothing like typical holiday crowds. Those who did go were largely supportive of the restriction. And it is no secret the fourth of july looked very different this year but it didnt stop other people from celebrating including our very own chris chmura. He helped host danvilles virtual Independence Day parade. It featured pictures and videos from previous years events. And in fremont people decorated their porches and front yards for the citys porch parade. Some were featured in a Virtual Event hosted by mike inouye. Judges went around to the homes to pick out the most creative porches. Oh, i love that. Its time now to check in with our own vianey arana for a look at our microclimate forecast. A warm fourth of july, even warmer today. Is that right . Yeah, were going to still keep the dry conditions out there, though. As the winds increase into the afternoon, well, there are a couple of things we have to keep in mind. As you said, kira, we saw a number of vegetation and brushfires break out. Some related to fireworks. Right to san jose. 61 degrees right now. Were pretty warm to start out. Considering its not even 8 00 yet. San francisco 57 degrees. Winds 17 Miles Per Hour. And i want to show you walnut creek at 65. You may notice it might look a little hazy outside. Well, we are going to see another dry day so still have the High Pressure which means another day in the 90s for inland areas. Now yesterday San Francisco managed to thithit a high of 76. Today a high of 71. Upper 80s and 90s. But if youre noticing that haze, you may want to be careful out there if you suffer from any sort of, you know, breathing condition, lung condition, or anything like that, any sensitivity, even your sinuses or allergies because the air quality right now because of the overnight mix of nearby wildfires or a wildfire in your area and fireworks, fireworks smoke. There is going to be unhealthy air quality especially right now. In the east bay it is really unhealthy. So down from the north bay down to the south bay limit outdoor activity. Hopefully well get some clearing heading into tomorrow. For today at least for the first half of the day for sure, keep that in mind. The good thing is we should all be wearing our masks right now so hopefully that aids in that. Were noticing the haze because of that smoke. Now the fire danger, we talked about it yesterday. Some folks with the illegal fireworks action. I hope we dont see that again today because the winds are going to be getting a little breezier today. So fire danger right now, i pushed the time line forward to about 3 00. Look up in santa rosa, 17 humidity. Morgan hill 17 . Anything less than 30 is not good when it comes to the humidity. That means its pretty much bonedry out there. And then looking at the winds, sure, right now its not gusty but as i fast forward that time line if you look at the time bar up top right around 5 30 p. M. , look what happens to the wind gusts. We get onshore winds and look at santa rosa, 29mileperhour winds down through morgan hill, 27. And keep in mind morgan hill will be 15 humidity. Three factors we look for, remember, how dry is it . Is it windy and is it hot . Because that elevated fire danger will remain along with winds expected through tomorrow. As we get an increase in the onshore winds what will happen on monday were going to cool off just a little bit. As far as your beach hazard goes, its still in effect and will remain in effect through 8 00 p. M. Today. Sneaker waves and strong rip currents for the coastline. Inland temperatures, take a look at the next seven days. I mentioned the increase in onshore winds and that will cool us off by a few degrees. More noticeable for inland areas. But it will remain breezy for tomorrow. Then we stay sort of in the mid80s, heading into the middle of the week. And by next weekend we heat up again. After all we are officially in summer yet again. San francisco expect a high of 71 degrees today. Again its 68 for tomorrow. And then well stick to the 60s all weeklong and warming back up again by next weekend. Todays daytime highs 80s and 90s for inland areas and then 70s for the bay and coast. A couple of upper 60s, even santa cruz will be in the upper 70s today. So it will be a great day. Remember, we have some pretty unhealthy air quality. Kira, back to you. Indeed. Vianey, thank you for that. It is 7 21 right now. We do have much more ahead. A bay area Nonprofit Organization being forced to scale back. But its not just because of the pandemic. Well tell you about the branding problem, the shop with the Cops Foundation is now facing. It is a particularly tough time for Charities Across the nation with so many millions of people unemployed and unable to support those in need. Its not only about talking to them and giving them snacks and getting a sticker, it builds a strong relationship with our families and the officers there as volunteers. Reporter the agency was already considering a name change to better identify with all its services. Cortez says now might be the time, the change to a name like badges for education as they try to reconnect with the community. We have to go out there and rebuild this trust. Its very easy to lose the trust in the Community Based on everything going on in the community. Hopefully last night you saw or dvrd the documentary about Betty Reid Soskin who at 98 years old is the Oldest National park ranger serving in the United States. Cheryl hurd had a chance to sit down with soskin to talk about the past and the present. The current climate noticing todays black lives Matter Movement is different, the movements shes seen in the past. A smattering of white folks who were looking for answers to problems that were immediate. Now there are towns where there are almost no black people. And those towns are marching. Soskin keeps working at the betty trosie the riveter museum and feels a sense of satisfaction. It makes me feel as if a number of those things i was looking to find in my life have now all arrived. Dry conditions which, of course, elevates that fire danger weve already been seeing all weekend long. I do want to show you how fantastic this view looks using our Weather Underground camera. Kira mentioned its pretty much sunny and blue. If you notice that thin layer just below or i should say on top of the buildings, that could be the haze kira was mentioning. We have seen sort of a decrease in our air quality, a mix of fire paired with the fireworks smoke. So keep that in mind if you are going to be out on an Early Morning walk. Up through the north bay expect another day in the 90s as well. Overall, something to keep in mind in terms of your air quality, a mix of wildfires nearby that were burning last night and also that fireworks smoke, we are seeing some unhealthy air conditions especially for those sensitive groups. Be mindful at least for the first and second half of your weekend because we will be keeping that High Pressure rolling over, something to keep in mind, limit outdoor activity. As far as the fire danger we will keep the fire danger in through the entire evening and into the start of the workweek because of that low humidity. Were talking about less than 30 up through santa rosa, right around 3 00. Dipping down in through the, i would say, 19 , 16 , as far as your estimated wind speeds were not too concerned about the winds but as we head into the dinner time we will see gusty conditions kick up especially up to the north bay, 20plusmileperhour. A mix of low humidity and wind is definitely a bad combination for when it comes to elevated fire danger. Well keep the breezy winds really all the way through tomorrow. Notice how it stays in the 20s. Beach hazards that will remain in effect until 8 00 p. M. Due to sneaker waves and the potential for pretty strong rip currents. Well see slight cooling heading into monday by as much as five plus degrees compared to what weve seen this weekend. Well keep the conditions dry all weeklong, not just for inland areas. Back to you. All right, vianey, thanks so much. And before we go this morning we want to take you back to our breaking news out of the south bay where homes along finley ridge are being evacuated because of a 100acre fire. About a dozen families, at least a dozen families, are threatened by whats called the park fire. East dunn avenue and jackson oaks drive are closed. The fire ignited around 11 00 last night. Evacuations are in place. Were not sure if those evacuations will spread to nearby neighborhoods. Cal fire last check was waiting for air tankers and choppers to arrive on scene. Theyre concerned about the wind and want to get the fire contained before the wind kicks up this afternoon. This is a live picture. Look at all that smoke. Were awaiting word on whether it has spread larger than 100 acres. Hopefully the planes will arrive soon and make headway in the firefight. Well continue to update you on nbcbayarea.
