Dr. Ramirez was acting director of length and Human Services pandemic and emerging Threats Office in the obama administration. He is an Emergency Room Physician in nashville, who has been treating covid19 patients and just finished an overnight shift. I know how busy it is in an e. R. On fourth of july. We appreciate you spending time with us. What are your concerns as you look at these celebrations . I can say, a lot of people were out treating the fourth of july like any other fourth of july, having big parties and Everything Else. As we see the spikes across the country, including in your state, what are your concerns about the Holiday Weekend . You are right, willie. Having worked overnight, people are out celebrating as i just experienced. It was a busy night here. I think were in an Inflection Point for the country. People are looking around and realizing that were at a different place than we were whether we were co when we came off memorial day. We were coming off lockdowns and case counts were coming down. The message was we moved past this. States were starting to reopen aggressively. I think as a result, people started to socialize too aggressively. Now i think more and more particularly over the last week, people are really realizing the case counts are accelerating. I think thats giving people cause for concern. I think there are some bright spots. In the last week, we have seen states start to implement mask ordinances. I think we are up to 23 states. In addition, i think anecdotally, im hearing from patients that they are starting to take the social distancing a little more seriously this week after seeing what is happening. What i think people have learned is that this isnt just a northeast phenomenon or a red state or blue state phenomenon. It can spread anywhere. If you are out and you are socializing, you are vulnerable. My hope is that all of the things that have been put in place are going to pay dividends that we didnt see after memorial day. To put it in perspective in the last ten days, our country has seen nearly half a million new cases of coronavirus. As you say, we certainly have not turned a corner. I want to ask you as you focus on some of the promising news about the possibility of a vaccine, i think it is becoming more clear that we will never quite be through this until there is a vaccine for everyone. Where are we in that process . The president yesterday and the day before again just touting that theres something coming soon on the horizon. Dr. Fauci has shown optimism, perhaps by the end of the year or early next year. That feels like a long way away. Where are we there that process . We are making progress, willie. I thi you have to look at this sort of pandemic in two parts. The first is whats happening with the immediate disease outbreak. Like you pointed out, theres a lot of bad news and news thats not encouraging as the cases accelerate upward. I think we are making better progress on the therapeutic and vaccine front. Just to put things in context, what i want people to really realize is that all of this work were doing around masks and social distancing is about trying to keep case counts as low as possible until we can bring these things online. I think they will come online as we approach the fall. From the therapeutic standpoint, i know folks have heard about remdesivir. They are starting to hear about another medicine thats shown improvement. As we get into the fall, we will see antibodies and frozen plasma going through trials and should be available for use. On the vaccine front, theres a lot of good movement. Globally, we have about 140 vaccines that are currently in development. Of those, about 18 are in phase one and phase two, which are early clinical stage trials. There are three vaccines moved into phase three, which is promising. From the u. S. Perspective, they are managing all of that through something called operation warp speed, run out of the department of health and Human Services. Their goal is 300 million vaccines by january 2021. Theres encouraging signs as we see more vaccines moving into phase three trials we might be able to reach that goal. Its never a certain thing as we heard from dr. Fauci this week. We are lhopeful we will get there. I know its been a very long night for you. We are grateful you would spend time with us and talk us through this. Thanks so much. I know you have former National Security adviser susan rice on the show this morning. You will be talking about that widely reported russia bounty story, where american intelligence Officials Say russias intel agency paid bounties to talibanlinked militants to kill american troops in afghanistan. White house says the president was not personally briefed on this. In your experience in washington covering administrations, does that sound credible . Number two, now that they are aware of the intelligence, what is the administration doing about it . Those are the issues exactly, willie. It was in his daily brief. He didnt read it. They say he was not orally briefed about it. Why not . Was that because the intelligence officials are afraid to tell him anything that is negative about Vladimir Putin because he blows up over that . Why isnt he doing anything . If it was important to put in the daily brief, daily intelligence, why didnt they act on it . Why didnt they brief him . Why did they let him have six phone call with Vladimir Putin and after the written briefing and not bring it up . Why was there no action taken . Why did they think it was credible enough to reinforce the troop protections, to tell allies, to put it in the brief, to hold a National Security interagency meeting but then not take any action . All of those are the Big Questions we will have for susan rice. We will be watching. Thank you very much. We will look for more this morning on meet the press when andrea is joined by susan rice. Im kira klapper. Vianey arana has a look at your microclimate forecast. Hey, vianey. Good morning, kira. Hey there, 56 degrees right now in San Francisco. So were waking up to comfortable temperatures. Well see overall a lot of sunshine today, wind speeds at about 17 Miles Per Hour and in through san jose, 59 degrees right now. Again, wind speeds have calmed down. Were going to see a shift in the winds with onshore winds increasing this evening. Todays microclimate highs will be in the 80s and 90s and, yes, another day of the 70s. For San Francisco a little warmer around the peninsula. The heat even managed to make its way there. I do want to talk about the fire danger and how todays air quality is doing at 7 00 a. M. Kira . Well see you at 7 00, as vianey mentioned fires abound in san jose. Firefighters are battling a fire near japantown along 101. The fire put up a lot of smoke. No word on what sparked it, but we were able to see the fire from one of our Traffic Cameras. You can see the flames and the smoke on the left side of the screen. The fire is still burning close to southbound 101. Chp says a tree caught fire next to the freeway forcing them to shut down several lanes. And illegal fireworks lit up the skies above the east bay, across the bay area, in fact. This is video from our Traffic Camera in emeryville. Looks like a professional show. Contra costa county fire had its hands full. In fact, at one point battling 14 fires at the same time. The fire chief tells us the writing was on the wall since may 1st. The county has been experiencing a 400 increase in grass fires over the same time in 2019. And the Department Already noticed an increase in illegal fireworks usage even before this weekend began. And dozens of the fires, particularly over the last three to four weeks now, are directly attributable to fireworks. Officials say, unfortunately, the fires happened on a day and night when fire danger already is high. Arson investigators are at several of the scenes this morning. Social justice is on the minds of many on Independence Day weekend. There were protests around the bay area yesterday including in alameda and in oakland. The whole point of it was like a new orleans jazz funeral for all of the black lives lost to police brutality, Racial Injustice as well as senseless violence like gun violence. Some of the emphasis yesterday was around justice for Breonna Taylor and improving prison conditions. It is 6 29 right now. I lead a group of immortals, an army, i guess, soldiers, fighters like you. Youve got questions, kid. I get it. You want answers . Get back in the car. That is oscar winner Charlize Theron starring in a new netflix movie the old guard which stre streams this friday. In the film, she plays the leader of a group of immortal warriors who have fought together through the centuries. Since leaving south africa as a teenager, first to model and dance in europe, then to act in america, she worked her way to the top of hollywoods a list. She won an akcademy award for hr role in monster and has been nominated twice more, including this year. Mov this reminds us she can handle herself in a fight, too. We got together for a virtual sunday sitdown while shes home in california with her two girls. I just got finished watching the old guard which is phenomenal. Its an asskicking movie. I think thats fair to say. Yeah. Theyre a group of immortal mercenaries. They have this great ability to not die, yet sometimes they can. When you look at immortality, characters who are immortal, you run up against this problem and thats fake. If you walk in knowing you are not going to die, whats really at stake . Thats not fun to watch. It was important to give them this ability to lose it so you are worrying for them. The theme that it explores, the characters who are at the core of it, theres something very intimate about the emotion. Its interesting to hear you talk about the existential question about immortality. We assume we would want to be immortal. But is it appealing . When you break it down to emotional suffering that you would have to experience over and over and over and over again, i think you realize that it becomes a very lonely experience. Ultimately, everyone leaves you. The closest thing that i could relate to as a mere mortal was dogs. They live for such a short period. I have lost dogs in my life. Its brutality. Its so brutal. Luckily, you have been good at repopulating your home with dogs. Some who running under your feet. We have two new members to our family. My daughters have been begging me for their own dogs. We have always had dogs. They are right. They are my dogs. Mom, we want our own. I finally caved in. They have their own little puppies now. I bet you get to help with taking care of the puppies. It always comes back on us. Lets be clear. Lets be very clear, yes. I basically have two new puppies. Thats been a big part of your quarantine life. What has it been like to be home not able to go out, not able to work and just kind of being with your girls, going through school and Everything Else . I had been working quite a bit that previous year. I was actually really ready to just be home. I would say the biggest challenge for me was just home schooling. Amen. It was a really, really hard it was mentally just really challenging for me. I was alone with two small children. One kid downstairs and one upstairs. The other one could have very well just burnt the house down in the kitchen. The other one upstairs was complaining about what a material ma terrible math teacher i was. I will make any action movie over and over and over again before i home school again. Theron was growing up on a form in south africa, during a time whethn her home country wa ridding itself of apartheid. Today, shes raising her two africanamerican daughters in a moment when their home country is undergoing a reckoning of its own. You want to believe that we learn and we will never go back. Yet, here we are finding ourselves at the crossroads again. My oldest girl is 8. I had this moment the other day where it started with the pandemic, wow, i have never been in a lockdown. What are my kids making of this . Then all of this other stuff that then followed. I had this flashback where i remembered vividly, my god, i was 8 years old when the aids epidemic hit south africa. We were going through the first real struggle since having apartheid broke. That country almost broke out into a civil war. It helped me navigate how i went about telling my girls what was happening right now in a way that wouldnt freak them out or scare them or wouldnt feel appropriate, but felt truthful. Thats a tough conversation. You dont want your 8yearold daughter or 5yearold daughter theres a sense of innocence lost. Theres a little innocence that is not there now. In a weird way, i see how it has empowered them. They have been empowered by all of this. Thats a good thing. Whats their reaction been when you start to tell them all these things that they may well encounter in American Society . One of my kids shes more sensitive to it. I have another child who shes not so sensitive. Shes more she wants to be proactive. What am i going to do . We make signs. We have signs. Shes that kid. Im trying to have them do it on their own time. While she treasures time at home with her children, work is on hold. Do you see a day soon, somewhere on the horizon, where you are back on a set with directors and actors and extras and everybody else making movies again . My industry is a tricky one. Its one of those jobs where it takes a village. You need a lot of people in order to do it. I dont know how were going to do that any time soon in a safe manner. A lot of my colleagues are actively trying to be inventive and trying to figure out ways where we can do that. I dont know i honestly dont foresee the very, very near future where we will go back to making films the way we used to. You will have to get back eventually, because based on what i saw at the end of the old guard i think there might be another movie coming. Am i on to something . You are a smart man. Very astute of you. It begins streaming this friday. My big thanks to charlize for taking time with us from her home. Subscribe to the sunday sitdown podcast to hear the full interview with Charlize Theron. Find it on apple podcasts or wherever you get yours. Coming up, we want to hear about your fourth of july celebrations in this strange time. Use sundaytoday and we will read your sunday mail at the end of the show. Good morning. We will be enjoying another great day throughout the bay area. Sunny skies expected today. A little hazy right now. 65 degrees in walnut creek. Now the reason for this we are seeing moderate to unhealthy air quality, the combination of last nights fireworks and also some fires burning nearby. So be mindful of that especially for those sensitive groups. Todays forecast will be in the 70s along the bay and the coast. 80s and 90s in inland areas with dry conditions expected to remain through the start of the week. Born and raised in philadelphia as one of seven children, henry joined the Army Specialized Training program while attending Lincoln University during world war ii. Private first class henry was sent to a pair of segregated bases, one in virginia, another in missouri. A College Football knee injury prevented him from shipping off to war with his fellow soldiers. He drove a taxi while getting his degree at temple university. Eventually, became a manager at a philadelphia employment office. Recently, henrys family took up his fight once again.
