Okay. Images like that are a nightmare for doctors to see going into the Holiday Weekend. Hospitalizations are going up and icu beds are filling up. Dr. Peter chin hahn, Infectious Disease specialist joins us again. Hi, doctor. This is troubling, troubling news you are telling us that Covid Patients have doubled in two weeks and icu beds at 75 capacity right now at ucsf . Yes, more than doubled since midjune of Covid Patients at ucsf, and icu capacity at 75 . Is this the worst you have seen it . It is not the worst but it is equivalent to the highest peaks we had in march and early april. So we were so vigilant the first twoandahalf months of this pandemic, then things started to open up and now people seem to be taking risks. We keep saying, social distancing, wear your mask. Maybe people are not getting it. Is there a different way to paint the reality of the situation and how bad it is getting . Yes, this is really serious. You know, on the front lines people are being admitted to the icu with covid every day. You know, we still dont know a lot about this virus. We are still learning every hour actually, we are getting new information. Theres still no vaccine. Even if you dont get to the icu, were knowing that there is a group of people, a large group of people who have chronic symptoms for many months after, that sort of like really putting a cramp on their life. I think we all need to be responsible including myself, remembering the three ws of wearing a mask, washing your hand and watching your distance. Speaking of wearing masks, there are different ones out there. How effective are they in preventing covid and the spread of it and which masks are the best . Well, janell, the most important thing actually that sometimes gets lost in the narrative is comfort, because it doesnt matter if you wear the most effective mask on earth if it feels suffocating and uncomfortable to you, you wont keep it on that long. You know, you have seen people walk around with the mask with their nose exposed and thats not very effective, unfortunately. I think having a mask that fits snugly and comfortable, i like the ones elastic like this because you can hold it by the elastic and then put it on your face, and then it is fitting snugly behind your ears. Those ones, whether or not they are, you know, from hospital grade or homemade or bought, they are still going to be effective if theyre comfortable for you. Okay, yeah, because you dont want to keep pulling it down and pulling it off trying to breathe, but you have to cover your nose and mouth. Thats the most important to prevent the droplets from entering your sigh nussnuses an. What about bandannas . People are pulling sheets over their mouth. Is that effective at all . Theyre effective if you can tie them pretty well, and my mom actually ties them pretty well. I have seen people who are constantly adjusting them because theyre kind of loose so i worry about that. Again, you want a snug fit. If you are a really good bandanna or scarf tier so if you sneeze or cough it will block it from getting to the other person. After memorial day weekend is when we started to see numbers rising. When will we know how well we did after this Holiday Weekend . Well, we will probably know in two weeks, as theres usually a twoweek lag from intubation period from when people get sick. But we are complicated by what we talked about last time, which is this incredible outbreak at san quentin which is adding another layer of complexity. Those numbers are spiking in marin county and basically all over the bay area. How are you feeling . Nervous . Yes, nervous. Again, nervous because this is not our peak yet and it just seems you know, today i was talking to the icu director and i was saying we have to brace ourselves again, just like we did early on in the pandemic. Yeah. It is unfortunate and we are feeling for you and all of the hard work. I know you are exhausted. Dr. Peter chin hahn. From ucsf. If you have a few people over, definitely social distance and wear a mask. Stay in your bubble. Yes. Thank you so much. Thank you. Great advice. A sad ending to share with the story of a Young Mountain lion that prowled around San Francisco. It was hit by a car along highway 1 in pacifica. We dont have to ask you that this year because there are no fireworks. No. Yeah, no kidding. People watching their screen savers at home i guess this year. At least if you are outside in your backyard like i am out here in danville, the weather is quite nice. Weve had three days of cooler temperatures. Things are going to reverse course a little bit for 4th of july as temperatures start to climb. Walnut creek, i think we will see 90s making a comeback. Today 85 was the high. Currently, a pleasant 82. San francisco continued to be chilly. 60 degrees with a west wind at 18 mourns. Patchy low clouds off to the west. In san jose, clear skies as the planes come in towards san jose airport out of the south. 78 was the high. 75, currently. Winds out of the northwest at 14. You can see the case for the ocean air conditioning, winds up to 20 Miles Per Hour inland from the south through napa and out of the west into fairfield. That has brought our temperatures into the 70s and 80s the last couple of days. That will start to go away tomorrow. We will have a closer look at the warmup in a moment, but i want to point out as our temperatures warm up over the next couple of days and if you are heading to the coast, watch out for a beach hazard statement. What that is different from the winter when you get 20foot high waves and breakers on the south, this is approaching from the south. The southfacing beaches once in a while will see larger waves leading to sneaker waves and stronger rip currents on the coast. Watch out for that, you will notice that advisory or is up u on sunday as temperature, warm on up. We will probably get mon sunshine on the coast. As you can see here, this futurecast, skies start to clear. We get more of a north wind down the coast which will bring some 80s to places like santa cruz for the weekend. Notice we start off the morning in the 50s and 60s. By lunchtime tomorrow warming up quickly, close todays high temperatures. Well get there by 11 00 to noon tomorrow, and by 3 00 in the afternoon you see more red on this map. Those are areas around intercosta county. Sonoma and into sunday, temperatures will warm up. It will be gone by the end of the weekend. Santa cruz, look at that. The numbers just updated. They keep going up a little more. If you want warm temperatures on coast, santa cruz only will be the warm spot but with the beach hazard statement watch out on the southfacing beaches. Notice as the high starts to kind of shift back towards the desert southwest, thats going to help to allow more coastal low clouds, more of the ocean air conditioning. One thing to watch with that high over the desert southwest, we could see our first taste of monsoon moisture, made a boost in humidity later last week which we will be watching closely moving towards southern california. Around San Francisco, a brief taste of some warmer weather, closer to 70 for saturday. Trending cooler early next week and you can see the inland locations into the 80s and 90s for the next two days, and then cooling down a bit as the sea breeze picks up into early next week. If we had to spend a Holiday Weekend at home, weather looking pretty close as we have temperature pretty close to summer microclimates for early july. Back to you. Thanks, rob. It looks nice.
