Its certainly the right move to hit the pause button. I think when we were seeing increased cases in california, we were saying, wow, is this just a testing phenomenon. Were testing more people. But i think we all start to get nervous right now, because our hospital beds are filling up in the state and our icu beds are filling up. Once hospitalizations and icu admissions increase, we start to get nervous about not flattening that curve as we did a few months ago. The governor called that out today. Specifically Contra Costa County and santa clara county. Their hospitalization rates are up. What are you seeing at ucsf . How is it looking there . Were still in sort of a lull here in San Francisco county. But its starting to affect us, because at ucsf we get transfers from a lot of other counties. Particularly for investigational drugs or higher levels here. Were starting to see more transfers. We still have capacity. But again, its like that tank that fills in very slowly and at some point the tank overflows. We want to stop it before it get there. Were hearing a rising number of cases of hospitalizations in young people. Can you get more into that . Yeah. So weve been getting some information from contact tracers. So when we investigation the outbreaks, weve been seeing theyre associated with a lot of large indoor activities. Behind closed doors. Graduation parties, and in the south weve been seeing frat parties and pledge parties being the source of a lot of outbreaks. So i think thats whats driving the epidemiology shifting to younger individuals. Of course, theres that feeling of instability and the understandable feeling that im tired of being at home for all these months. For sure. People have cabin fever, especially the young folks out there. You are treating covid19 patients, things are opening up. I know youre busy working 24 7 at the hospital. When you do go out, do you go out with your family, are you comfortable with it at all . Thats a great question. Usually im i dont care egg salad or getting salmonella or anything. But this time and this period, im still nervous. I havent even eaten outdoors in a restaurant. Ive gotten takeout. Im going on day trips to wine country, but not really feeling comfortable being in a congregate setting yet. As people are going out, what should they do . Wear their masks, socially distan distance. The three ws. Wearing your mask, the second is washing your hands and the third is watching your distance. I think the most important thing that i think most people are not doing yet everywhere, i think the simple act of wearing your mask. That helps protect you from transmitting to others, mainly, but also from you getting it from somebody else. The more people that wear it, the better we are as a community. Its estimated about 80 of us need to wear it before we can flatten that transmission psyche. Okay. With the spikes were seeing, its mandatory by the governor. Its a mandate by the governor. Law enforcement said so many people broke rules that it was virtually impossible to enforce it. Shop owner Kathleen Mendoza is thrilled restrictions have been lifted. She says many businesses on beach street have taken a big hit. For us, it just means that there will be more people coming here to enjoy the beach and actually bring us more business. You might think all beachgoers are carefree. But everyone we talk to still has covid on their minds. They seem to be smart about wearing their masks and restrics being lifted, the countys current shelter at home order will expire july 6th. Wearing face coverings in public will still be required. Reporting from santa cruz, laura sambol, nbc bay area news. Looks beautiful down there. At least people are spread apart a bit. Oh, yes. Keep your distance, find a spot on the sand where you can stay away from people. Enjoy the sun. Jeff ranieri, how much more of the sunshine are we going to have . I think pretty good amount here as we head through the weekend. It would be nice to have that sabd between our toes, wouldnt it . Definitely a good way to relax out there. Through the area, we did have warm temperatures. You know, a little above average. Down into concord. 93 with the average at 85. Also reaching up to 93 in livermore with your average at 83. So those inland locations certainly warm today. But we are going to see things gradually beginning to drop as we head throughout the weekend. Lets put a focus on the fog. We have had to deal with that through the morning. Its going to be a similar situation as we roll through tomorrow morning. If youre up early, expect patchy low clouds. Back into San Francisco. Berkeley, oakland and down the coastline. Thats about it. Once we roll through the afternoon, sunshine inland and then if youre headed to the beaches, patchy areas of fog at times. But, again, temperatures do begin to drop a couple of degrees. As we get the cooler system moving across the west, thats also going to pick up the wind. Not a tremendous drop but definitely out of the mid90s inland. 83 in san jose. 79 palo alto. 80 in napa. San francisco, 64 degrees. Weve been talking about this chance of wind this weekend. The good news on the latest update is, it may not be quite as gusty as thought earlier in the week. That is good news. Tomorrow afternoon, i see winds to 20 Miles Per Hour coming out of the west. Everything will be breezy. 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour. Except the higher elevations. We could see those 20 to 40 Miles Per Hour wind gusts. Certainly breezy through the upcoming weekend. A nice long look at that forecast. Well tell you when the wind calms down. Ill see you in 25 minutes. Thanks, jeff. See you shortly. Up next, preparing for the real thing. By all indications, Major League Baseball is back. Next wednesday the giants and as begin practicing in the bay area. In late july the season start. With the new surge in cases here and the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, is this a good idea to have baseball back . With us tonight, giants firstyear manager gabe kapler from his new home in San Francisco. Great to have you back on the program. Im a huge baseball fan. Not sure about all this. How are you feeling about returning . I can totally understand that. I understand the trepidation. I understand the concern. I personally share it and the Giants Organization does as well. At the same time, maintaining optimism that were able to get to the ballpark in the next week or so, get together as a group and start this modified camp that our coaches and players are really, really excited about at this point. Gabe, buster posey, hunter pence, pablo, what are their concerns and how are they voicing it to you . I think they share the concerns of the community and San Francisco. I think there are concerns that arent just covidrelated as well. Mainly, though, i think right now as it stands, guys are looking forward to getting back to the ballpark and playing. We will say this. Were going through a year through our safety protocols that Major League Baseball spent a lot of time putting together. Im sure you heard the document were following is over 100 pages. Its extremely meticulous. Our medical staff has done a tremendous job of preparing us for this moment. We ran a camp in scottsdale over the course of the last couple of weeks and our players were able to stay safe. We have one scare. We took them off the field immediately. All of our players tested negative, as did several of our Staff Members that were in the building. Were looking forward to getting back to work and doing so safely. But ultimately allowing ourselves to smile about the fact that getting back together to play baseball. Were excited speaking for a lot of baseball fans. One question, youve been engaging in the social injustice issues. Is this something you chat about with the guys . Absolutely. When we get back together with the players, were going to touch on three main topics. The first topic well talk about is Racial Injustice, the fact that we have very, very clear systemic racism both on the local level, but the National Level and in the world today. Were going to allow our people of color to talk about that. Specifically, one black player, jaylen davis who recently wrote a post with joan ryan that was really, really thoughtful. So jaylen and i discussed the possibility of him standing up in front of the group, sharing some of his stories. Sharing some of his concerns and basically helping us understand how we can support him and the black community. That will be one of the main topics well discuss. Well talk about how staying healthy in this time of a pandemic can not only be good for our families but also can be a competitive advantage. Then well talk about adhering strictly to the protocols that Major League Baseball has put in place. The third thing well do is open up a discussion for our players and staff and talk about what theyve experienced over the course of the last couple months. Both in quarantine and also with a lot of the Racial Injustice that we saw. We wont forget that that was front of mind when we get back to baseball and when people are really asking questions about game strategy and about player performance. Were still going to keep those issues front of mind. Were going to speak up about them as a group. Last question. We appreciate your efforts. This is your first season as skipper of the giants. Are you excited, nervous . A little of everything. Today we have a group call and we were talking about a bunch of our players. Talking about getting back to oracle. Ive walked that park several times over the course of the last ten days in an effort to see what the modified camp would look like, utilize every nook and cranny of the ballpark. When youre walking the field and thinking about a modified camp, a lot of those nerves and some of the butterflies come to the surface. Because you know its real, you know its right around the corner. Your heart starts to beat a little faster. I think thats an excite ng part of being in maim juror League Baseball right now and having a San Francisco giants cap on and giants across my chest, which i take very seriously. Look forward to having that uniform hanging in my locker. Youre getting us excited. Gabe kapler, good luck this season and we look forward to seeing you in person one of these days. Thanks, coach.
