Ben platt. Musical guest brittany howard, and the legendary roots crew its the tonight show at home edition. Steve and now, heres jimmy. Jimmy hi, everybody. Thank you so much for watching our show im jimmy fallon, welcome to the tonight show. Here we go time to get some news, and it isnt good the daily number of new coronavirus cases in the u. S. Is at its highest level since the peak in april. Yup, apparently the rising numbers in america have forced other countries to make a tough decision the European Union is considering a ban on travelers from the u. S. Over the coronavirus failures jimmy yeah, the european leaders disapprove of trumps handling of the virus. Right now, the only ones who approves of trumps handling of the virus is the virus thats right europe is banning americans from entering. Even worse, europe was like, how do we put this . Um, this has nothing to do with the pandemic we just hate americans okay byebye. When europe said theyd block americans from entering trump was like, wow, that must be some wall. Some wall. Some wall. Some wall thats not a good sign that europe is more willing to accept tourists from wuhan than the u. S. The bad news is, you cant go to europe. The good news is, your friend cant come back from spain being like, its pronounced barcelona. and its not only europe that is changing travel rules listen to whats happening locally as well. Governors of the tristate area are announcing new travel restrictions there in new york, new jersey, and connecticut for all travelers coming from states with spikes in coronavirus cases. Jimmy yeah, new york, connecticut, and new jersey. Tourists were like, damn, now we cant travel to new york and connecticut. Quarantining for two weeks sounds like a lot, but its all worth it once you get that first hot slice of times square pizza hut. Yup, a twoweek quarantine new yorkers are like, just think about it as a cab ride from the east side of manhattan to the west side. [ light laughter ] its a new york joke, but, gosh, theres a lot of people that live in new york. They know this joke. Meanwhile, looks like trumps handling of the virus is really affecting his poll numbers a new New York Times siena poll shows biden is currently leading President Trump by 14 Percentage Points biden gets 50 in this poll. Compare that with 36 for President Trump. Jimmy yup, joe biden has his biggest lead yet when he read about it in the paper, biden was like, wow, good for joe biden he must be thrilled. Meanwhile, trumps poll numbers are so low, he asked if he could declare bankruptcy and start over [ light laughter ] [ bell rings ] got a ding on that one ding those numbers are so bad for trump, today he held up john boltons book to change the subject. And he held it like this, too. Many pollsters are claiming that this a huge lead, but after 2016, thats like the mayans claiming, okay, the end of the world is next, next week yeah, the end of the world this week is good. Your count no, trust me you read all the calendars, monday isnt monday in the mayan calendar its friday, so, no, yeah. So. Not only is biden ahead in the polls, he also raised more money than trump last month. Yeah, trumps so desperate for money, hes going to start writing a tellall book about himself. As if there arent enough going on right now here in new york, theres another issue that the state is being forced to deal with complaints about illegal fireworks are soaring in new york city. Its getting so bad, mayor bill de blasio is forming a task force to combat the problem. Jimmy the Fireworks Task force has the nypd, the fdny all searching for the fireworks as well as your cousin who always goes, this has to be the big finale yeah, this is got to be it trust me what, another song more fireworks wow. Thats the best one. No, thats the best one. Members of the Fireworks Task force are like, this sucks, but its better than being on the illegal sparkler task force. You have the right to oh, forget it. Well, it turns out members of that task force are going to be the only ones running around new york city for a while. Organizers announced they will cancel the new york city marathon, the Worlds Largest marathon because of the pandemic jimmy man, no trips to europe and no marathon your annoying friend on instagrams gonna have a a fullon panic attack what am im going to post . Are we cousins . Yeah. Did you see those fireworks . Cancelling the race is probably a good idea. You know that feeling when someone jogs by you, and youre worried about the virus . Multiply that by 53,000. Yeah good call. When the news broke, america was like, oh, no. I was totally going to run the marathon this year yeah, im so disappointed. And finally you guys, lately ive noticed more white people are promoting equal rights on social media, which is great but it makes me wonder if its always for the right reasons watching tv today, i saw an ad thought it was interesting check it out have you been participating in social justice more than ever before, but you feel frustrated that no one is noticing try backpat. Jimmy our first guest is an amazing actor, oscar winning actor who you know from films like gladiator and a beautiful mind. He has a new thriller out called unhinged. Here is my conversation with Russell Crowe. Jimmy Russell Crowe, it is awesome to see you, buddy. I miss seeing your face in person, man. Thank you so much for doing this i appreciate it. What what time is it in australia right now . Cheers jimmy. Lovely to see you too, man its just after 8 00, maybe a quarter past 8 00 in the morning. Jimmy are you quarantined . Where are you . Are you with the fam or yeah, well, im in the bush so, im sort of isolating in isolation. When this isolation thing first started where is that there you go you know, we had sort of family discussions and stuff about, you know, where people were going to be and all that you know and my parents are here in the bush you know my dads 84, my moms 79 you know, theyve got the complications that come with age. So i just made the decision that i had to be here, you know so, you know, i was talking to my boys, and they kept the schools open here for quite a while. So theres a bit of confusion there about where people were going to go and all that and then at the end of the day, my kids decided to isolate in sydney i was jimmy wow. You know, i was a little affronted because its the bush we got the wideopen spaces. You know we got all of these Amazing Things up here, right . But they were like, no, no, dad, weve made the decision that in a pandemic, were going to isolate in the most populous part of the country, surrounded by the areas that have the most infections. And im like, guys, can i ask why . And my youngest one, who is just too honest, said, uber eats. [ laughter ] jimmy uber eats . Uber eats jimmy isnt that great in a pandemic, my fatherly roles and responsibilities were passed over for that jimmy kids are going to be kids, right . I mean, i what what a year its been, an unfortunate kind of year for australia. Describe the vibe with the fires out there. I feel so bad for everyone over there. Whats the vibe over there it certainly has been a bit of a you know where i am here in the bush, we you know, this time last year, we were sort of about two years into drought so we were extremely brown and the dams were all going down. And then, as we went through the winter, we didnt get the rains that we were hoping for in the spring. We got a little bit, but not enough and things just got hotter and hotter and hotter. So by the time, you know, september, october rolled around, the fires were already starting to burn and they started off a long way away from here, you know they started off a couple of hundred kilometers away but you could just see it encroaching on a daily basis you know then come the end of october, i had to fly to america. I was working in wilmington. But november 12th, the fire hit here, in not only in this valley, in this piece of land. Im looking out a window over there and i see a tree with fresh leaves on it but that tree would have been aflame right there. You know and we were surrounded on three sides. Now, you know but we went from that drought into that fire, you know, and that fire threat was around for months and then when the fire threat was over, the heavens opened up in february. And we had pretty much threequarters of an annual rainfall within a few weeks. So the whole valley got closed down every road out was flooded it was it was like just one extreme to another and then we come out of the flood, of course, into this coronavirus. So its been just a series of events, you know, that but, you know, i think when you look back through history and you realize lots of other people and times have been way more serious than what were dealing with, as serious as it is. You know, theres ways forward you know, you just got to keep doing your thing, jimmy. Jimmy you also did a great thing with the with the rabbitohs that i want to talk to you about but i before we get into that, you know, black lives matter, the protests have been, obviously, all over the place not only just in america but also the protests have theyre very big in australia as well. And you did a very cool thing with your team to explain for people, you know, i have an ownership in a a rugby league team, in whats called the nrl here in australia. The south sydney rabbitohs is the name of the team its been around since 1908. It was a Foundation Team you know you know, within australian culture, you know, of course, theres, you know, australian aboriginals and also many maori people from new zealand and other nations like samoa and tonga and Papua New Guinea and, you know, the player base for the game of rugby league, you know, definitely has a a majority of of black players. You know and as a club, we just asked them if they wanted to make their own statement. And so they took it upon themselves and they talked to their opponents on the night, the Gold Coast Titans and they also talked to the referees. So before that particular round started, the entire squad both squads, and the referees and any administrative staff and stuff that were there in the stadium, of course the stadiums are empty at the moment, they all took a knee together and you know, that was just a gesture of support from across the other side of the world. You know and, you know, the great thing about it was that right across the board from the top of the sport through both clubs and the administrations to all the players and Coaching Staff and everything, there was 100 agreement that thats what we should be doing. You know jimmy really to offer support but also to bring light to certain issues that are prevalent in australia, you know . We have a really negative colonial history of how we treated the Indigenous Culture that was here when we, you know, when the english first arrived to settle the place. You know so theres a lot of those things that are Public Knowledge and are discussed at certain points that just need to be fully addressed. And one of them is a thing that requires a lot of focus, and thats black deaths in custody theres been an inordinate amount of aboriginal men and women die in Police Custody since the early 1990s. And these things just simply have to stop there has to be the focus given and the seriousness given to reachieve some balance. You know or achieve some balance for the first time in a lot of cases jimmy absolutely well, i think the picture even just of both teams on one knee was a beautiful thing. And it did send a good message they sort of seemed to naturally i dont think there was any plan, but it kind of formed a heart. So it was kind of a poignant moment and ive had, you know, and the club has had nothing but absolutely positive feedback for it jimmy good for you i wanted to tell you before we got going on this, but ill just say it now, you were so great as roger ailes and congrats on winning the golden globe. Crushed it you were so good as you always are. But that was great and i wanted to get a message to you, let you know how much i thought what a great performance. You were amazing thank you very much you know, that was a hugely challenging job. And i kind of you know, going into it the first time i did the makeup test, man, it was six hours long you know im staring down the barrel of that job you know and 68 makeup applications or whatever, going, seriously . You know jimmy we got to do this tomorrow again, too, and the next day and the next day, and the next day yeah we got it to to an efficient level and then over time, learned a lot about, you know, the best way to approach it and adapted the schedule completely around it. So i was very lucky i was working with blumhouse and the people that made that easier than it might be for me. But yeah, that was a seriously challenging gig. Jimmy you did a great one. You did a great one. I want to talk about your new movie, unhinged. Im also a little frightened to talk to you right now, because you are scary as hell in this movie. But can we talk about that movie when we come back . Is that okay can you stick around all good. Jimmy more with Russell Crowe when we come back, everybody. More with Russell Crowe when we come back. Grab a box of 15 or try them loaded. Get em now with no contact delivery. Jimmy heres part two of my conversation with Russell Crowe. Russell crowe, thanks again for talking to me. Lets talk about your new movie, unhinged. Its in theaters july 10th now this you are absolutely terrifying in this movie really i mean im going to tell you im going to give you maybe three minutes into the movie, Something Like that where i go like, okay, no, no, oh, my goodness, no, you messed with the wrong dude. And its kind of based off of road rage where a woman is behind you at this red light and just lays on the horn. Its one of those films that on the surface it seems to be a particular type of genre movie or whatever, you know. But it also has extreme resonance for the time we find ourselves in you know, we seem to have gotten to a point in history where its very difficult for people who hold differing views to have any polite conversation you know and as the character states in the film, weve developed an inability to apologize to anyone for anything. You know yeah, i mean, when i first read it, man, i wasnt i didnt think i wanted to do it in fact, i was pretty damn sure i didnt want to do it, you know but what stayed with me i had probably a fortunate series of events where because i had read it, and it was such an extreme script, and i happened to be in los angeles, and i was seeing friends who were actors, you know what have you been reading . I was like, id be reading the thing i had to describe it to them. And male or female, they were like, oh, wow, that sounds amazing. And i had, like, turned it down you know i was like, this it . Jimmy do you really think hold on one second. What a came to realize, man, i simply was afraid of it. Because it was so true at its essence that, you know, people who allow the events of their life to strip them of their humanity and then, you know, act out against others and were seeing it, you know, more and more often with Mass Shootings and other events and, you know, its a real thing in our society, and its something that should be put on the table and discussed and broken down. And, you know, hopefully eliminated because we focus on it you know, what is the Energy Around us at the moment that is causing certain people to respond to their lives in that way . Jimmy you were saying when you said, eh, im going to pass on that. Did you feel that way about gladiator . Or no, youre like, oh, i got to do this. See, gladiator kind of is a unique experience because the script that they had was so bad. It was just so bad you know its like, okay jimmy really yeah. But, you know, the producer didnt know i had actually already been able to get a a copy but you know the thing he said is, i dont want to send you the document we have because you wont respond to it. He said, but i want to encourage you to have a meeting with ridley scott. And heres the thing that i want you to think about. Its 180 a. D youre a roman general, and youre being directed by ridley scott just think about that. [ laughter ] jimmy yeah, exactly. The one and only so i went to see ridley, and he was so prepared and the things that he could show me, and the visual images and the mathematics of how he was going to not have to build an entire coliseum, yet still shoot the coliseum and we just clicked on that first meeting. So, you know, there was a little it was definitely a little bit of risk involved in it at the time, you know. Jimmy did you know it was going to be a big hit . Did you know that you were going to be quoted for the rest of your life not on day one, man [ laughter ] but by the time i was leaving the set i definitely felt the collective energy of that cast was fantastic. You know you sit back and think about who was actually in that movie you know, great english actors like derek jacobi, and oliver reed, and david hemmings, you know and youve actors like tomas arana and djimon hounsou, you know and then you got Connie Nielsen with a career best performance you got joaquin phoenix, just smashing open, you know, anybodys assumptions of what a character like that could be and how i mean it was just everybody bought into it, man. It was like one of those things, nobody was going around and tommy flanagan, too. Of course, nobody was going around winking at the camera, you know nobody was going around doing that sort of performance where you give the audience the knowledge that you understand youre in a funny costume. You know everybody just lived in that world that ridley created. The thing is so it might have been different with somebody else. But hes such a visual artist that every space that you walked into, even if it was only a partial space that would be filled in with cgi, you know, that space was so amazing. You know, and everything felt like on a scale, you know . So, i mean, it was an extremely difficult job. And, you know, kind of terrifying in a lot of ways but jimmy it stands the test of time its fantastic its unbelievable 20 years later, people are still talking about it you know, it doesnt happen with every movie, man. Jimmy yeah it doesnt happen with every film you know, when ridley and i sit together and talk about it, the main thing we do is just laugh about what we got away with. You know ridleys attitude is like, how many bullets did we dodge in one movie . And it came out, and it came out, and it was successful, not only was it successful, it was the best film. It won the oscar, you know jimmy and theres paintings of you forever i mean, theres people dressing like you for halloween theres every interview i see you in, they end up going, mr. Crowe, were very entertained. And you go, oh, my gosh can you not say that to this man . I would only say that to you through zoom i would never say it to you in real life, ever. Because i would be afraid. I go, oh, my gosh. But you knocked it out and i appreciate you taking the time to talk to me about all this thank you for everything youre doing over there in australia. And love to the family, and you, stay safe i really want to jam out with you again. I want to pick one of those guitars up with you and play, buddy. Cool, man, lets do that. Jimmy thank you so much again. I appreciate it. My thanks to Russell Crowe stick around for ben platt, everod come on back cheetos has popcorn now . Hey, im going to need you to. Never mind. Who he won he won a tony for that one hes amazing and season two of the politician is starting up right now. Here is ben platt. Jimmy ben platt, thank you so much for being here i appreciate it, buddy how are you doing, and where are you quarantined, bud im quarantined in l. A. , in my childhood home, in my childhood bedroom with my parents. Jimmy no of course of course. Yeah, im a new yorker usually, but i you know, i wanted to get some space and so ive been in the teenage room, and reverting slowly to my teenage self. But doing doing just fine jimmy what was the first thing thats kind of, like, weirded you out . Are you sleeping in the same bedroom, or no the same bed that i grew up in, yeah i mean, i i i have, like, started eating cereal in the morning again. [ laughter ] all of my, likinhas changed. Its very untouched. Jimmy this is, like, where you we talked about this. Where you kind of got your bug and you were doing the broadway shows in your backyard, or something i read yeah, we have, like, a little platform in the backyard that, like, in my eyes, works really beautifully as a stage so thats where i did all of my productions growing up i did, like, you know, lion king with a bunch of kids from my First Grade Class that i could, like, convince to come over on the weekends and perform. Jimmy first grade . I got four or five of them to show up and, like, even when there were only five kids, i was like we got to make sure one of these kids is playing young simba, and one is playing old simba because you gotta see that transition and sort of, like jimmy youre a producer. Wow. So, like, you know, we dont have enough for timon and pumbaa, but it doesnt matter. As long as theres a moment where young simba becomes old simba. I feel like that was jimmy and how would that moment how would that moment happen well, still i had the one kid was on the stage, because he had done the beginning of the show he was young simba and then we pulled a bunch of flower petals out of my moms flowers garden just ravaged her stuff and just threw them on him, and then the other kid ran in and switched with him. It was very theatrical really beautiful directorial choice, i think. Jimmy yeah and im sure your mom was happy that you ripped up her garden, too. Absolutely thrilled yes, she loves she loves when stuff gets ripped up. But, yeah, thats where i got bit. Yeah jimmy hey, i wanted to ask you about dear evan hansen. I know we talked about this, and man, you were fantastic in this play. But there were rumors that dear evan hansen could be a film, and you would be in the film is this happening . Well, i mean, were kind of in this weird, like, covid limbo, where kind of anything can happen its something we definitely have been trying to get together and make happen i know universal really wants to make the film and you know its kind of a tossup at this point just based on can we do it safely and can we get it together in time and, you know, some of us are getting a little long in the tooth. So i think its, like, kind of a now or never kind of thing but im hoping im hopeful that it can come together and we can find a safe way to do it and, you know, youll be the first to know, but as of now, it could really go either way. But i think it could be a beautiful thing still. Well see. Jimmy people would love it i mean i mean, i think once people see whats gonna happen with hamilton, everyone will be going, yeah, we should have filmed this. I mean, you were unbelievable. By the way, what is going on with the stache i cant believe i havent brought this up. This is unbelievable i just figured now or never jimmy im going to give it a standing ovation, if you dont mind [ applause ] thank you heres a closeups of the stache. Thank you. Jimmy what are the reviews well, ive always wanted to do it. Ive been afraid to do it, and i figured, like, quarantine, now or never kind of thing my boyfriend noah really likes it, so it makes me really like it and certainly, if we did the evan hansen movie, this would go away. But for now jimmy you got to show range, you gotta show your range. It could be like a you know, a fastforward scene of dear evan hansen. Like, its you hes like a grown, kind of 70s dude. Yeah jimmy yeah, looking back, and its like a stand by me. You can narrate the whole thing. I grew a mustache last summer no, two summers ago. And i called it the summer of stache, i was very excited about it and universally [ laughter ] like globally. They dont get it but thats okay. It makes me like it a little more, i think. Jimmy you have to do it. You gotta do it. I mean, when youre much older, youll be like, look how young and cool i look like a stud, i had a cool mustache. Its awesome, its fun [ laughter ] i want to say also, thank you for what youre doing with your activism as well of course jimmy i see you on that, not on your socials, but just in the news and everywhere youve been to a few protests, and youve been donating a lot of money to different causes whats your thought on everything that is going on . I mean, its wild i think its been incredibly eyeopening for me the way it has for everybody in a lot of different ways particularly white people. I think that you know, its been a really important thing to come to terms with the difference between just avoiding being an active racist and being an active antiracist. And i think figuring out the difference between being actively an ally and accomplice versus just, sort of, being neutral is really important and something that goes really overlooked particularly in something that is so systemic and pervasive and i think no matter how pure your intentions or, sort of, how benevolent you feel like you are as a white person, there is just something innate and inherent that we have to, kind of, take ownership of and, sort of, act against and so, thats been a really nice wakeup call, i think. And for me its just been all about making sure im amplifying the right voices. You know, the black leaders and activists that have been fighting this same fight for a a lot longer than just these past couple of months, and who know a lot more about the ins and outs of all of this than we do and making sure those are the voices were following and listening to, and not speaking before i understand what im really saying and jimmy people have the questions about, obviously, theres places to go but you can start with bens social ben platt, hes got a lot of good spots that thanks. Jimmy open your eye a little bit and have you start thinking how to make the world a better place jimmy speaking of that, the politician season two. We just had your costar Gwyneth Paltrow on the show a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, oh, my god, yeah she was just so hard to talk to and deal with. But she gave you rave reviews, buddy. Rave reviews as everyone does everyone who talks about you, they nothing like watch out for this guy, hes unbelievable. Thanks, man jimmy but explain what is happening this season. Yeah, of course payton so yeah. The full first season was kind of like this backstory, setting up this character of payton, whos like this crazy, egomaniac passionate politician to wants to be the leader and wants to be the president and it was this whole kind of High School Drama madness and now, you know, hes a bit older, all the characters are a bit older. Theyre in their 20s i miraculously get to play my own age, which is a bizarre new experience for me. And its all about a state senate race in new york where paytons running against dede standish, whose played by judith light shes, like, been in that seat for 13 consecutive terms, and hes the first person to challenge her in a long time and her Campaign Manager is, of course, bette midler, who plays hadassah gold. Which is just, you know, very casual to have bette midler just, like, giving an allin comedic performance next to you. Jimmy judith light and bette midler, two two legends. So now youre going for senate with your dreams are to become the president , really yes, thats yes, yes yeah, no, so yeah, its all about state senate its obviously somewhat fantastical. And the nice thing about it coming out in this moment, is that its pretty much an escape i mean, theres a few things that obviously are relevant. Theres an episode about cancel culture, and theres a bit about, like, activating young people to vote, which i think is a really powerful and fantastic message. Biktarvy is a complete, onepill, onceaday treatment used for hiv in certain adults. Its not a cure, but with one small pill, biktarvy fights hiv to help you get to and stay undetectable. Thats when the amount of virus is so low it cannot be measured by a lab test. Research shows people who take hiv treatment every day and get to and stay undetectable can no longer transmit hiv through sex. Serious side effects can occur, including kidney problems and kidney failure. Rare, lifethreatening side effects include a buildup of lactic acid and liver problems. Do not take biktarvy if you take dofetilide or rifampin. Tell your doctor about all the medicines and supplements you take, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis. If you have hepatitis b, do not stop taking biktarvy without talking to your doctor. Common side effects were diarrhea, nausea, and headache. And ask your doctor if biktarvy is right for you. Yes.
