Of the six primary campgrounds only two will stay open. Curry village and 50 of the up er pines campground. The lodge and the hotel will still take reservations. In many ways its a dress rehearsal for the up coming school year. A school reopened, Sunrise Middle School welcomed back 60 students for Summer School. Kids lined up single file. Six feet apart, all wore masks, got their temperatures checked and will be required to wash their hands regularly. They are all spaced apart. That s what right now, 6 30, a Coronavirus Vaccine could be ready by the end of this year. That is what the top medical leaders testified on capitol hill today. On a national level, its been a while since we have heard from dr. Anthony fauci. He is no longer part of the regular white house briefings. But today, he did testify before congress. It comes as 23 states report a surge of cases in the reopening. We have more on the testimony on capitol hill. With the u. S. Coronavirus death toll topping 120,000, the nations Top Health Officials are called before congress to give a pulse check on the pandemic. In some respects we have done very well. Infectious disease expert dr. Anthony fauci calling progress thus far a mixed bag at best. In other areas of the country, we are now seeing a disturbing surge of infections. The officials citing evidence of new spikes of southern and western states with some states rolling back reopening plans. And cases rising among the young. President trump again confusing the issue of whether he ordered top officials to slow testing. A stunning claim made at his tulsa rally. So i said to my people, slow the testing down, please. The white house said he was kidding but this from President Trump today. I dont kid. Reporter but today, each of the officials in turn denied that President Trump gave them any such order. I know for sure, that to my knowledge, none of us have been told to slow down on testing. We are going to be more testing. Not less. Reporter and amid the National Upheaval of systemic racism, dr. Fauci said it has contributed to the virus. The Africanamerican Community has suffered from racism for a very, very long period of time. And i cannot imagine that that has not contributed. Reporter sobering testimony that contained a key note of optimism, a vaccine could be ready by yearend. Nbc news. Washington. A lot to digest, its a pivotal time for us, every bay area county is reporting more cases. Santa clara county is seeing some of the highest increases in daily cases since the pandemic began. So, what now . Joining us is dr. Peter hong, Infectious Disease specialist, you have been with us since day one and it seems like we are back to square one. How concerned are you . Well, raj, im a bit nervous about california, but im more nervous about the sun belt states of arizona and texas, florida. You know, i think in the bayier, we are seeing a stability really but in southern california, and in california in general, we are seeing an increase in the test Positivity Rate that suggests that its beyond amount of testing, and more concerningly, we are seeing the increase in the number of hospitalizations. About 15 above where we were last week. And just to be clear here, President Trump doesnt like more testing because its leading to more cases why is widespread testing so important. We have discussed it for months, but to clarify an update. Because its the only baro meter we have, raj, otherwise, there will be shooting in the dark. We need to know what is going on in the community, so we can perhaps scale back on opening up if we need to as long as we have enough contact tracers. So it will help us. We dont want to wait until people overrun the icu. I know you are still working with covid19 patients there at uucsf, i know some of your colleagues in chicago had new discoveries, has the virus mutated and are there various strains here . Yeah, theres different strains for sure, but im not concerned or worried about mutations that it affects vaccine efficiency so far. We can look for the proteins on the surface of the virus to determine where it came from so for example, theres a chinese virus, a europe virus and new york strain. So far, they are similar enough that the vaccine that we develop would be pretty stable as far as we know today. We just heard about a minute or two ago from dr. Fauci testifying on capitol hill, he said that he is fairly optimistic there could be a vaccine by the endis that reali . I think in the beginning we thought it was 1218 months. And then we have been really pleased by the Rapid Advances and speed in which the companies are going. I think the end of the year is a little too early for me. Im thinking spring for the first roll out of a vaccine. We will probably seeing it rolling on out in stages. The rule of thumb, a couple of months ago when we were talking was that it was for older people and the people 20 and 40 are not impacted but that is changing, why is that . So, i think we are seeing more and more young people getting it. There have been reports in sacramento of family gatherings and graduation parties as being a source. Theres been reports in texas and some of the sun states and pledge parties, and fraternity parties, large number of people and risky for young people getting covid. Thats the epidemic we are seeing right now. And finally in terms of your staff and fellow doctors and medical workers there, is the burn out already there or is it still to come for you guys personally . I think we are a bit weary and fatigued. We trying to take each taday a step at a time. We are just trying to practice some self care, you know, take it close and enjoy the sunshine while we have it. And maybe take a few days off. Thank you, we always appreciate your time. Thanks, raj. Right now, President Trump is on his way back to the white house after a visit to arizona today. His trip comes amid on surge of coronavirus cases in the state. President spent the day meeting with Border Patrol agents and visiting the border wall, he just finished speaking to a crowd of more than 3,000 at a church in phoenix before taking off back to the white house. The church encouraged attendies to wear a mask. The countries move to reopen is not to blame for the higher numbers, rather its the increase in testing. It sounds bad. What it is is, we are finding people. Many of those people are not sick or very little. Large protesters gathered outside the president s evening event. Police dispersed the crowd before the president exited the building. And in atlanta, a Rayshard Brooks was remembered as a hard working employee, a week after being shot by police. An over flow crowd watched the service outside of the baptist church, that is where Martin Luther king, jr. , used to preach. Inside the church, his daughter, paid tribute to brooks who left behind four children when he was shot to death in a wendys parking lot. Recorded on video, it was an act that sparked a lot of nationwide outrage, protests and maybe some change. I believe that we will finally have the type of Police Reform for black and brown people that includes compassion, grace, mercy. In the wake of brooks death the police chief stepped down and to officers involved are now facing criminal charges. East bay students are taking action, holding a demonstration and march to support black youth. It started at 3 00 in the b. A. R. T. Station. The black Student Union at berkley high, partnered can cals black Student Union to put on the event together. Students performed dances and sang songs and gave speeches. Demonstrators planned to march to another park across from the rose garden. Well, still to come, get ready for the drivers license test that changes coming to the bmv this week. Were all doing our part by staying at home. That could mean an increase in energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. It appears the push to legalize Sports Betting in california has gone bust, they have tabled the bill that would make Sports Betting legal in the state. The napa lawmaker said he does not think it would pass in time to qualify for the november ballot. 60 native american tribes that run casinos in california have strongly opposed the bill. Supporters argue that it could raise an extra 107 million in state revenue. An exciting announcement for anyone looking to get the drivers license for the first time. The behind the wheel drivers tests are starting up again friday. Because of the pandemic, things will be different. The routes will be shorter and masks are mandatory. Say goodbye to the segway, its creator predicted it would revolutionize personal travel. Some Law Enforcement embraced it and the mall cop, president george w. Bush fell off of one, he was okay. I have been on the ones without the, not the scooter but the handles, the flat, its like a skateboard that is automated. The hoverboard . Maybe that is what its called. Dangerous. Wow. Fancy stuff. Back to the future. Jeff, lets talk about the forecast this week. Its warming up. Oh, yeah, definitely is. We have 90s inland and we have a fog back at the coast line, we are going to get you all ready to go 54 the next couple of days and we will look at the wind in the up coming forecast that is about six minutes. Plus, should San Francisco schools end its relationship with police . The proposal that could change how police and students interact. At San Francisco public schools. When we closed our doors in march, wynn committed instantly to keeping all 15,000 team members onboard. We then focused our fivestar level of service to all who needed it. We made improvements to peoples lives. We strove to be better and we made people happy. This closure may have temporarily taken us out of wynn and encore, but it couldnt take the wynn and encore out of us. And now, we are proud to welcome you back. Today, the board wants to discuss changing the current agreement between the police and school district. As we found out, the conversation got much bigger. Reporter this goes beyond redistributing funds from the Police Department to other sources of resources. For example, west Contra Costa County pays its Police Department, 2 million, and Los Angeles County pays its Police Department, 70 million. Here in San Francisco, they only pay 45,000. This is about preventing conflict before it spills in to the schools. That means us being really clear about how we support school safety. How we support students and families and how we have clear plans of making sure that when the police come in to our schools, that they are, we are making sure to minimize contact with students when its not necessary. San francisco board of education commissioner Allison Collins wants to do away with the current agreement between the San Francisco schools and the citys police. And instead, begin investing in problems before they arrive in the classroom. And we know when communities are better resourced, they dont come in, in trauma and in crisis. Reporter to do that, they are thinking of taking funds from Police Coverage and directing it to social workers and counselors. One is to outline when officers are called to a school and what they can do on campus. We want to move away from the mou, it has not been effective in managing police and it has not been effective in really clearly defining what we should be doing better as a staff. Reporter the most recent agreement between police and the district expired in january 2019. But it was in affect in august 2018. When board member collins said that police violated it at the Balboa High School shooting. The board needs to look past agreements and look at Community Based organizations. In a statement, the San FranciscoPolice Department said it values the relationship with sfusd, and wants to continue working with them. We firmly believe that our youth and School Resource officer programs serve as positive ways to build lasting and healthy relationships between our officers. Once the district assesses the staff and comes up with a more detailed security plan, then it needs to present it to the board for approval. In San Francisco, jackie ward, nbc bay area news. Heres a reminder that fire season is here, along with the fourth of july. This small fire on a popular south bay trail, this afternoon. About a quarter of an acre burned along the loss gatos creek trail near camden avenue, thankfully nobody was hurt and no word yet on a cause. You can see in the live High Definition sky network. As we get a view right now. Theres a lot of fog and low clouds rolling in. The fire danger lower at the immediate coast line, again, for the inland valleys today, it was hot. Up to 95 in concord, and 95 walnut creek and livermore coming in at 95. Saratoga 94 and morgan hill, 93. We have hot High Pressure to the south and that is helping to fuel the heat. Moving in from the south and take a look at the storm system off shore. We are not going to get any rainfall from it here. But the circulation around that is what is pulling up just a little bit of humidity. You may have noticed it outside. So, as we roll in to tomorrow morning. We will see the clouds and fog right near the immediate coast line, with any kind of thunderstorms we are seeing sierra thunderstorms those would stay away from us. So, you will see as we move through tomorrow morning. We will start off with plenty of 60s. Really nice start here for us. 63 in the peninsula, 68 in the trivalley and best chance of the fog is over San Francisco and the north bay as we start off tomorrow morning. So we as we start off at 7 00. You see the low clouds over the north bay, and San Francisco and right down the coast line. As we roll through the afternoon. We get the sunshine here for most of us and then, if you are headed to the beaches do expect some of that fog to linger. For the peninsula, at the 80s for palo alto, and right up to daly city, it drops off to the 60s with the cold ocean breeze. A mix of 50s and 60s for San Francisco, with the clouds lingering in to the afternoon. And for the north bay, going up to napa, sonoma, and in to novato, look for 80 and is 90s tomorrow. With sunshine for the afternoon. And not look that breezy. Winds out of the northwest at 12 miles an hour. My extended forecast for San Francisco, next big change, i want you to focus in on it, and it gets here sunday. We are looking at winds. 1540 mile an hour, gusts in the evening and wind in to early monday morning. So, that is going to increase the fire endanger, its not a dry easterly winds. Nonethele nonetheless, it will be gusty. Coming out of the west, 1540 miles an hour sunday. 81 on sunday. So, we definitely have a lot happening on the next seven days. I think the bifth thing would be looking ahead to the wind as you move through sundays forecast, you guys. Okay, thank you. Jeff. Still to come, a deal has been reached.
