Jimmy and his guests senator Kamala Harris. Talib kweli. Roy wood, jr and the legendary roots crew its the tonight show at home edition. And now, heres jimmy. Jimmy welcome, everybody thank you so much for watching were going to get to everything thats going on in the country right now. Last night, there were a lot of peaceful protests around the country, more peaceful than other nights so thats a step in the right direction. Also today, all four Police Officers were charged in the murder of george floyd so heres hoping for some justice for that family. And theres many more families that deserve justice, as well. But again, these are all steps in the right direction my guests tonight are senator Kamala Harris. We also have talib kweli, who is a rapper and activist, and we get to catch up weve known each other for a a long time. And we also get to hear fromr. Its going to be a fun show. Lets get to some news here, you guys after nine days of protests, a a new poll found that pretty much everyone thinks President Trump is not doing a good job. Check it out right now, based on the data we have, the public is not with this president his Approval Rating continues to be terrible, 54 disapproval. The highest ever for a a president at this point in his first term jimmy yeah, not good even worse for trump, that poll was taken among his kids right now, trump seems to be polling somewhere between jake paul and that time i decided to grow a mustache for the summer honey, you liked it . I did i liked it i was the one. Jimmy my heavens theres got to be someone else no, probably not when trump saw his numbers, he started crying and then he was like, im not crying, its the tear gas from my church photo shoot blowing back in my face. Thats right, everyone seems to be turning on him. To give you an example, fox and friends is now just fox and friend. You know, at this point, trump should just go for 100 disapproval and then take credit for uniting the country but trumps thinking can trumps thinking he can turn this around. Tomorrow hes going to walk to the vatican, hold up a bible and like, okay, pope francis, now lets do a silly one. Speaking of that, how does trump not know how to hold a a book ive never seen anyone hold this is have you ever seen anyone hold anything like that its like a broken g. I. Joe hand or something. Ive never its like hes plucking the bible from the bible tree ive never seen anyone hold have you ever seen anyone hold anyone honey, have you read this . Does anyone want to read this . Can i have another can i have another glass of water . Sure all right, you can put your hand down now on the cup meanwhile, former president george w. Bush released a statement that some people derstand the meaning of america or how it becomes a better place you know its serious if they got george w. Bush to write words. Even televangelist Pat Robertson called out donald trump for his response to the protest this is Pretty Amazing watch this he said, im ready to send in military troops if the nations governors dont act to quell the violence he spoke of them as being jerks. You just dont do that, mr. President. It isnt cool. Jimmy yeah yeah, he was like, this isnt cool probs out. Microphone drop. You know we live in crazy times when were all agreeing with the guy who once that said gay people cause hurricanes. And as more of the country turns on trump, republican senators still have very little to say take a look at this. Senator mcconnell, was what the president did last night the right thing to do . Was what the president did last night right . Senator enzi, are you concerned at all about what happened at the white house last night jimmy he was actually asked the same question after leaving lunch. He was like, um, im late for dinner well, you may remember last week, trump was rushed to the white house bunker for an hour because of the protests. Well, earlier today, trump said the report was false take a listen. Well, it was a false report i wasnt down. I went down during the day and i was there for a tiny, little short period of time and it was much more for an inspection jimmy yeah, its kind of like running into a friend at a cvs when youre buying hemorrhoid cream youre like, im not buying, im just inspecting the what is this . Hemorrhoid cream im just inspecting. Im a hemorrhoid cream inspector. Whats the big deal . I dont want that. And finally, after a rough few days, heres something to bring us up. So were going to start manufacturing doses of the vaccines jimmy and heres something to bring us back down. But if it acts like other common virus common coronaviruses, it likely is not going to be a very, very Long Duration of immunity jimmy yeah you guys, senator Kamala Harris is a senator from the great state of california. I got to talk to her today here is my chat with senator Kamala Harris. Jimmy senator harris, thank you so much for being on the tonight show and coming back to us. Thanks. Jimmy i know these are very difficult times and youre very, very busy right now. So i really, really appreciate this thank you. Thank you so much for this good to be with you, jimmy. Jimmy if you dont mind, id like to get right to the breaking news today was that the three other officers involved with the death of george floyd have now been charged. What are your thoughts as of today, were one step closer to justice. But you know, i have long believed, and i think we all know justice delayed is justice denied and why it had to take so long for those other three officers to be held accountable has, you know, caused pain for mr. Floyds family, and the community, and all of us who watched that video and are watching whats happening. But thankfully, keith ellison, the attorney general, has taken over the case and is obviously not wasting any time in making sure that justice is delivered to mr. Floyds family and to that community and to our country. Jimmy what are your thoughts on the Administration Currently and how theyve been dealing with this on top of the pandemic i mean, jimmy, weve got a president of the United States, or at least somebody who occupies that position, who doesnt understand the job and is incapable of performing the job. And most recently, you know, frankly the words that he a president , theyre the words you know, i joined the protesters in d. C. Jimmy i saw that so ive been out there, you know and i will tell you that, had my parents not marched and shouted in the 60s, i would not have been together with all those who did. Im pretty certain that i would not be talking with you tonight as only the second black woman ever elected to the United States senate there are so many things that we as a society have benefited from because people took to the streets to exercise their First Amendment right, to speak out and speak to their government so that we could see progress. And the idea that just a couple of nights ago, this guy, donald trump, who happens to right now be president of the United States, would throw tear gas at people who are peacefully protesting so he could clear the roads. Right . It reminds me of the emperor with no clothes, so he could clear the roads to walk, to carry the bible, the holy bible. You know, as though it were one of his steaks, one of his trump steaks, for a photoop and that night, cause i was at my apartment in d. C. , i heard the blackhawks flying. You know the last time i was on a blackhawk . When i was in afghanistan. Jimmy wow. Thats these are military aircraft that are being turned on the people of america hes talking about turning the u. S. Military on its own people i serve on the Senate Intelligence committee i serve on the Homeland Security committee this is not the america that people fought for. And this is not the america that is the america of our idealsthis is something all togr and thats why people are marching and shouting. And the optimism that i have is the optimism that all of us have whenever we are in these kinds of fights, which is, its not a fight against something, its a fight for something jimmy wow. But you know, donald trump doesnt get it, and thats why everyones got to make sure that we vote in november and show ourselves and the world that we are better than this jimmy speaking of november, ive seen you in numerous interviews saying that its going to be a very important time in our history. Yes, it will be jimmy what are we looking at here in november coming up . Okay. So first of all, theres so much at stake in the election. I mean, so again, were in the midst of a Public Health were in a pandemic. We have had over 100 thousand souls, in just less than 100 days, perish, die. Millions of people have contracted this virus and are suffering in its grip. We have over 40 Million People who were working, who are now unemployed just in the last 100 days because of this pandemic and one of the things that one, i will again say that we would not be in as bad of a situation as we are, had the president not taken immediate action had the president not called it a hoax and minimized the seriousness of it. And we are where we are. So in terms of the election, one of the things that we have to make sure is that people can go, and vote and be safe so i have a proposal i call it the vote safe act. That basically is that states should have all states should have vote by mail all states should have early voting, at least 20 days before election day, so you can figure out when it works for you to go vote and all states should also, for people who do go to the polls, have safe precautions, things like curbside voting or put in place wait times so that unlike in wisconsin, people stood in line for two to three hours, people would only have to stand in line for a certain number of minutes. So these are some of the things that im fighting for. In terms of this b. S. About fraud, listen, donald trump spoke the quiet words out loud when he said that he was concerned that he and the Republican Party would lose if people vote by mail. Meanwhile, he himself, and i believe family members of his have voted by mail consistently so the whole thing about fraud and the vote by mail system is really it is a red herring to distract people from the seriousness of this moment, which is that were in the middle of a pandemic we want people to be able to be safe when they vote. And we definitely want to make sure that people dont have to make a choice between their health and their right to exercise their voice, especially at this moment in time in our country. No strings attached. Jimmy heres more of my conversation with senator Kamala Harris. Is there anything you can give our viewers, maybe a message of hope or any words of wisdom to anyone that are watching tonight, watching Kamala Harris . You know, so recently ive been meeting by zoom with young leaders, and im talking about 8 and 12yearolds theres a little girl who i met with and she is literally doing the work shes got a whole outreach system that she has for Elementary Students and middle School Students to talk with them about their experiences during the pandemic. And so she calls it, covid19 for kids. Her name is alyssa jennings, and shes just extraordinary and she talks about how because she also has a Health Condition that she has grown up with and so shes talking about, to these other kids about, how to get through this when theyre at home, and they cant be with their friends and theyre doing everything online. There was a young hes 7 yearsold, Cavanaugh Bell is his name and he decided to create this whole effort where he is gathering food and getting donations to feed seniors. I mean these jimmy wow. These incredible kids who are who know what i have long believed, which is, were all born as leaders. And then its just a matter of when you decide turn that on and these kids inspire me like you cant believe. So, there are a lot of good stories. Jimmy do you get that energy from your parents or the thought of hey, i have to fight for whats right yeah. Jimmy and ive got to get out there . I mean, when were you out there protesting well, i was in a stroller [ laughter ] i was in a stroller. And so i was out there jimmy wow. And in fact, my mother used to have a very funny story about how i was fussing and she said, kamala, what do you want . And i said, and this is how she would say it, and she said, kamala, what do you want . And i said, fweedom. [ laughter ] l jimmy oh [ laughter ] oh, come on. Fweedom. It was a much cuter story when she would tell it, but thats the story she told. [ laughter ] yeah, so jimmy i mean, do you think that thats when you get instilled to fight for whats right and to make certain choices when you, you know, starting as young as stroller age . Yeah. Well, you know, heres the thing, jimmy, i was also raised that and this is what i strongly believe, you know, theres a a big difference between charity and duty, okay charity is, oh, i got a little to give. Look at how great i am im so benevolent. Im just going to give im charitable. And then theres duty, which is really what i believe, which is that, we each have a duty to each other its not charity, its not as if i have some extra, ill give you some its that it is literally each of our responsibility, whether we feel like it or not whether we have the extra time or not, to participate and to see what we can do to lift up the condition of others. You know, the real measure of the strength of the human being is not like donald trump, based on who you can beat down the real measure of strength of each of us is based on who you can lift up. Like the kind of muscles that you can see youve got when you help somebody out and you say, wow, ive got that kind of power in me to actually help someone else and make a difference in their life . Thats the measure of strength and so thats how i see it jimmy senator Kamala Harris, thank you so much for doing this, and taking the time and coming on our show id love to see you again, next time in person, hopefully. Yes you be well, be safe, and thank you. Jimmy my thanks to senator Kamala Harris. Jimmy talib kweli is a a rapper and activist and a good friend of mine. I got to talk to him today lets hear his thoughts. Here is the great talib kweli. Jimmy talib kweli, its so good to see you. And thank you so much for being on my show i know this is really kind of a difficult, painful time right now in our country yeah, yeah. Jimmy i just would like to talk to a familiar face and a familiar voice thank you for having me its my honor and my pleasure to be a part of this good to see you, too jimmy i know i miss you i always get excited when i see you because do you remember when we first met . I do. The first time we met was in the reggae taxi i think. Or the airport in amsterdam with Justin Timberlake and cameron diaz jimmy doing the disco taxi, thats right yeah. Seth and we went to africa together we were kind of forced to be friends. We were roommates for the whole time right we were tapmates i learned a lot about white People Living with you, jimmy. In a tent. [ laughter ] jimmy oh, no, can you say it on the show or you cant . I learned that white people, and im generalizing here, but i learned that white people play a lot of poker and drink a lot of whiskey at least the white people i was around jimmy i think i did a lot of that, yeah, yeah, yeah. I want to get into this with you if i can because i really respect your opinion on everything and why is this time feel different or does it this is interesting reparations for africanamericans is sort of a a polarizing issue but during the civil war, there was a general, tecumseh i feel like was his name. He did special orders number 15 where he said if you fight with the union or support the union and release your slaves, you get slaves get 40 acres and a mule now, spike lee named his film company after 40 acres and a a mule we never got that Andrew Johnson reversed that back in the day. But it was one of those moments in history where they needed black people so much and they needed black people to participate in the country so much, but they were making promises to us with 40 acres and a mule now we have a situation where young people of color young, marginalized people have been trapped in the house because of the covid Lockdown People havent been able to celebrate birthdays with their friends. People havent been able to graduate with their friends. And then, you have the perfect storm of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery and george floyd being murdered by police or by white supremists who think they are police and so you have this energy of people who have been trapped inside the house and they need to release so we have this perfect storm of this sort of riot energy. The last time we saw a Police Precinct burned down was in 1968 when dr. King was murdered now, six days of rioting, they passed the Civil Rights Act after that so dr. King said a riot is the language of the unheard. When voices are unheard, they rise up in the streets and so now, now that the violence and rioting in the streets is starting to like dissipate a little bit, youve got to look at what are the policies and changes that come out of this . What can we vote into being . What can activists, whether they believe in voting or not, contribute to the situation . And i think were talking about police reconstruction, defunding the police the police have received 220 more funds in the last 30 years you know, talking about reparations. Now is the time, because i think the country is in a place to hear us now jimmy youve been through your career, very outspoken about racism and Police Brutality i was wondering if you wouldnt mind maybe telling me what are your earliest memories of racism wow you know, i grew up in park slope, brooklyn. I remember being called the n word by a little italian kid that was on my soccer team like, you know, he was the cool kid on the team. His name was nick, and we had a race and he was like i was like, if i can beat him in the race, i could be one of the cool kids, right. So we raced. And as soon as we finished the race, i beat him and i was like, ha ha, i won. He was like, of course you won, youre a [ bleep ]. So, i knew the word was bad. Thats the first time i heard it, but the feeling of feeling cool and feeling like a winner and feeling like i was one of the cool kids immediately was deflated with one word and i didnt respond to that situation, because i was like seven, eight years old i didnt know how to quite respond. But it stayed with me, and i vowed that i would never let a a white person call me that word without any consequence or pushback ever again. This is stuff that ive never spoken to a therapist about. This is stuff that ive never spoken to my parents about but black people have to not have to, but weve internalized this trauma and this normalization of racism that, when it bubbles up to the surface, people are like, how are you dealing with this . So sorry. Like, yo, ive been dealing with this my whole life. Ive been black my whole life. This is nothing new. Jimmy yeah do you think with twitter that its magnified because people feel safer that theyre anonymous and that theyre behind their keyboards and you dont have to see their face and be up front . Yeah, a lot of people are critical of my amount of my twitter engagement you know, im on twitter a lot and so, me as a i consider myself a problack person. My problackness means that i combat bigoted ideals. You know, i dont go for individuals. If you Say Something that punches down to marginalize people, if you Say Something thats hateful or bigoted and it comes across my radar, i was taught that i cant ignore it. Some people have to ignore it for selfcare. But my selfcare is always speaking out jimmy and how about has that spilled over on to your kids oh man, a shout out to amani and diani. You know, my kids are wonderful. I love them so much. When Trayvon Martin was murdered by george zimmerman, i went to have a meeting with Harry Belafonte and a bunch of other people who could amplify activists voices. Harry belafonte put me in touch with the dream defenders they were occupying the state capital in tallahassee to sort of try to reform and change stand your ground laws and so, when trayvon was murdered, my son was 17 years old. And i took my son down to florida and we occupied the building with the dream defenders. That w now, ive been stuck in california, i follow my daughter diani eshe on instagram. Shout out to diani im following her and shes out there protesting in the street with the people in brooklyn in a neighborhood where my bookstore nkiru books used to be so it hits close to home i see my daughter out there with these people and i get worried, i get scared. Im like, yo, youre out there, theres a pandemic going on, you could get hurt, you could get killed. Anything could happen. But then, im like, im proud of her at the same time. Shes my daughter. Shes doing exactly what i would have been doing at that age. So ive got to just like let it be shes the new me ive got to let her have that. Jimmy yeah is it tough watching the news . Particularly for black people, theres two sort of trains of thought. One is we shouldnt be retweeting and showing traumatic black images its like how whto lynch black e these picnics and parties and just watch black death so i get that people are traumatized by it and dont want to see the images but the flipside is, without us seeing those seven minutes of that cop, chauvin i think his name is, kneeling on george floyd, he would not be arrested if some people cant deal with it, i get that but us seeing it moves the dial forward. Jimmy yeah, and its a a tough job for those journalists and reporters on the field, as well yeah. I mean, you know, were in an era look, donald trump is trying to be a dictator. Donald trump might not be he might not think hes a fascist, but hes moving in fascist ways when he talks about when the looting starts, the shooting starts, its illegal to shoot someone for taking your property, especially if youre a cop paid by tax dollars to protect the people so when he says that black people who are rioting are thugs and he says the press is the enemy of the people, they feel empowered to shoot thugs. They feel empowered to shoot at the press because the press is the enemy of the people. I watched a black cnn dude get arrested on live tv. This is insane when the police are targeting the press, we dont have a a democracy or a republic or whatever you want to call it, we have fascism. We have a dictatorship jimmy is there hope . Yeah, theres got to be im an artist. Im an optimist by nature. You know, but you have to follow the lead of the people who are doing the work dont engage in erasure of the people who are talking about this when the cameras are off. When the cameras are not focused on george floyd or Breonna Taylor or Ahmaud Arbery, there are organizations on the ground doing the work theres the movement for black lives, the website is m4bo. Org in minneapolis, theres black visions mn blackvisionsmn. Org theres weclaimtheblock. Org in minneapolis. You know, theres a new one. I was reading a shout out to alicia garza from black lives matter she works with an Organization Called black to the future, which have laid out a 27page black agenda that i completely agree with and i think that the things that are in that black agenda are good for the whole country you know, the black agenda is not something that just helps black people the black agenda is something that helps the marginalized, the poor, the people who are the fuel to the fire that creates america. Jimmy i always love having you on, man. I really, really appreciate you taking the time talking to me and, again, as i said right before we started, i miss your voice. I miss you too, brother jimmy do you have anything new coming out i know were not here to plug anything right well, i mean, i got a new album with diamond d, shout out to the legendary hiphop producer diamond d that im working on. But in the spirit of what were talking about, a lot of people have been hitting me up and saying we need that black star album. We need that black star album. Me and mos def are in the final stages of the black star album. Its produced completely by madlib, so shout out to madlib and everybody at oxnard. But the new black star album is dealing with a lot of this subject matter and im working hard, trust me when i tell you, im working hard to get it out to the people jimmy i love you, man. I cant wait to see you. Hopefully, next time in person, okay no doubt. Lets get it jimmy stay safe. Bye, buddy peace jimmy thank you, thank you, thank you. My thinks to talib kweli more tonight show when we come back. Come on back, everybody. Choose between a Great Network and the best prices. We give you both. Jimmy hey, everybody i got a chance to talk to the very funny roy wood jr. , whose been on our show numerous times. But right now hes quarantining in the beautiful birmingham, alabama. Heres my chat with roy wood jr. Jimmy roy wood jr. , thank you so much for joining me i really appreciate this where are you quarantined right now . Is this are you in new york no. We stayed as long as we could and then a couple of weeks ago made the drive down south, myself, my girl, our 4yearold and drove 16 hours to alabama. So thats where we are now, good old birmingham. In birmingham, in alabama so birmingham, you know, i dont think its really that different from a lot of whats going on in other places but we did have something interesting, you know, that gave me a sense of the community of what alabama is and so, on sunday night, we had we had a protest. We had a peaceful protest at a a park downtown in the civil rights district. And so this is where birmingham to me is just such a different place to be from, is that, you know, you talk about justice, this place is just rich with it and its rich with people willing to fight for it. So everybodys at the park for the peaceful protest and a good friend of mine, comedian jermaine funnymaine johnson, he says to the crowd, you know what while were down here, why dont we try to tear down that Confederate Monument over there . And the crowd was like, all right, yeah. Lets go do that. So, you know, people were trying this is how ready birmingham is to be done with racism somebody in downtown birmingham pulled up a pickup truck with a rope to try to pull down a a million ton Confederate Monument with a pickup truck thats how tired we are. It didnt work it didnt work jimmy i was going to say, did it work . No but mayor Randall Woodfin came out you know, he spoke with jermaine and he spoke with the crowd. And he said, give me two days to get this done and the mayor got it done in one and the Confederate Monument is down and that came as a result of people, you know, coming together you know, there was a lot of stuff that happened after that in the streets of birmingham, no different from everywhere else and a lot of that stuff, all of that stuff happened, you know, without the mayor or, you know, Jermaine Johnson telling people to go do that. Nobody told people to go do that people were going to tear up stuff on their own, and they should and thats what happened want to get to is that the next morning, in that same civil rights district, theres a a black woman optometrist, dr. Adams. And dr. Adams one of the places that got torn up. And myself and a gang of other locals, we just showed up and we just started cleaning, man. We started cleaning. And during that time, just shoveling glass, i mean, the entire city came together, black, white, young and old. People brought food. People brought music and water a homeless person came up and donated their time and jimmy wow. To be able to see that sense of community here, you know, that was dope. You know and jimmy thats amazing i really hope that i really, really hope, you know, doesnt happen is that we dont, you know, lose sight of that and so so to bring that all back together, so then we catch this is how this is how together the city of birmingham is, jimmy so we have a peaceful rally for george floyd we tried to get down a a monument the mayor steps in, and says, hey, you know what . Give me a minute ill get a crane dont tear up your pickup truck. Ill take down the monument. Next day, the city cleans up then the state is going to fine the city of birmingham 25,000 for taking down the monument a wonderful woman with a Church Downtown started a gofundme, raised the money to pay the fine and going to give the difference to black civil rights organizations thats what the city of birmingham is about. Jimmy well done. Oh, my goodness. Can you imagine that in 24 hours, that all went down, huh . Yeah, i just think that theres just a wonderful show of initiative happening here in the city and, you know, ive never been more proud to be from birmingham then in the past 72 hours jimmy thats a beautiful thing. Right now i think we can both agree that we need leadership in this country. Is there what would you want the president to say, if you can have him say anything . I resign. That would be a start. You know because its not about saying anything anymore, its about doing something. And i think thats why i hate the rhetoric thats going around with regards to protesting versus looting. Oh, you shouldnt violent protest. Why is that a topic of discussion if you put a pot on the stove and the pot started to boil over, the first thing youre going to do is take the pot off the stove. Jimmy sure nothing to concern yourself with why the steam is coming out every which way. When you look at racism and systemic oppression in this country, thats a kettle pot thats been sealed shut and put on the stove for centuries and every time the kettle spot starts boiling a little bit, the conversation is about why is the steam coming out . Thats the not the way stop talking about that take the pot off the stove and thats the only conversation that needs to be had. I think thats the conversation that gets lost in the midst of everything that happens, you know, at night in america. But at the end of the day, regardless of whats happening at night, theres a lot of tragedies that are happening at night that are sad and that are terrible but if you want those things to stop, ultimately if you want those things to stop, take the pot off the stove. And then you wouldnt even have people outside during the day blocking your freeway, keeping you from going where you want to go. I want to go shop. You think i want to be in a curfew, jimmy . I went out to the store last night. Walmart closed at 5 00 do you think i want to live in a world with Stores Closing at 5 00 . Do you think i want to be outside shoveling glass in 94 degree humidity i dont, but i will. Just take the pot off the stove.
