Don cheadle, reverend al sharpton, new music from luke bryan its a great show. And before i forget, happy fathers day to all the dads out there and reminding everyone else in the world that there is fathers day is this sunday. Its a day that a lot of people im not saying, am i hinting. I dont want anything. Okay. Jimmy im just reminding the millions of people oh, it is its sunday . Jimmy i dont want anything okay, good. Jimmy i really dont want breakfast in bed or anything like that. That lines up perfectly with my plans jimmy i really i dont. I dont even like eating in bed. Okay. Jimmy i dont. Well, maybe like a pizza maybe you dont like morning eating in bed. Jimmy yeah, thats right thats right. Jimmy morning eating in bed, its like [ laughter ] busted so hard whatever, man. Just its just everythings fine i dont need a thing its not a it was not a a plea it was saying to everyone, thank you to every father out there. Happy fathers day okay, good. Jimmy lets get to some news well, guys, its another day and another Supreme Court set back for President Trump the Supreme Court which includes two of President Trumps own picks has delivered him two major losses in just four days now. Today, with a 54 ruling, the court rejected the president s efforts to end the obama administrations d. R. E. A. M. E. R. Program. This protects 700,000 immigrants brought to the u. S. As children from being deported jimmy so d. R. E. A. M. E. R. S can keep dreaming while trumps still having a four year nightmare. Thats right, the vote was 54 it was the first time trump was like, lets wait and make sure we count all the mailin ballots. Right . Because they count too right . Its crazy that somebody in the white house had to be like, bad news, mr. President , yeah, we dont get to deport 700,000 d. R. E. A. M. E. R. S. Bad news sorry. Yeah, at first, trump was confused he thought daca was the ac dc cover band opening for his rally in tulsa ladies and gentlemen, daca actually, daca is how trump asks for a diet coke when he is cranky daca daca daca trump wanted to roll back lgbtq rights and the court said, no. Trump tried to end daca and the court said, no. Basically trumps trying to dunk on obama but Ruth Bader Ginsberg is blocking all his shots. Get that weak stuff out of here. Thats right, trump was pretty upset by the decision cause he actually did tweet, do you get the impression that the Supreme Court doesnt like me. Then minorities, immigrants, scientists, doctors, women, cnn, msnbc, the New York Times and every former staffer was like hey, dont forget about us trump also tweeted, these horrible and politically charged decisions coming out of the Supreme Court are shotgun blasts to the face of people that are proud to call themselves republicans or conservatives. And this is strange, right after he said, shotgun blasts to the face, dick cheney suddenly appeared. You rang . Well, it wasnt just the Supreme Court trump spent all day tweeting about he also sent a flurry of tweets attacking john bolton. Seriously, trumps thumbs were moving so fast, his staffers were like, please god, tell me hes playing candy crush. lets not forget though that john bolton is no saint either right now, this is basically like if iago wrote a tellall about jafar. He wants china to help win him the election he thinks finland is part of russia he wants to invade venezuela and thats not good. Thats right, details are still coming out about boltons book apparently bolton says trump asked chinas president xi to buy u. S. Soybeans and wheat to help him with votes from farm states trump asked for help from china, ukraine and russia. He is like a drunk dad running through epcot looking for his kid. He is about this big . All right, im going to check ireland. All right. Thats where i was last. And somehow asking china for help to win the election isnt the most shocking revelation here is one of the most bizarre ones involving trump and kim jongun. Bolton, in his new book, saying trump was eager to present kim jongun with a a trump autographed copy of elton johns rocketman cd, the nickname that trump had given kim. Bolton saying that getting this cd to kim remained a high priority for several months. Jimmy giving someone a cd isnt diplomacy, its how you tell someone you have a crush on them in eighth grade. Did you ever give a cd to anyone mixed tape. Jimmy yeah, mixed tape i dont know if i gave to anyone in fact, i didnt. I would make mixed tapes and say, no, if you like the song, go buy it in the store. Oh. And then so you dated a lot [ laughter ] jimmy my god, stomping your flipflops oh, please the book also says that during [ laughter ] the book also says that during talks with kim jongun, secretary of state mike pompeo slipped bolton a note about trump that said, he is so full of blank. Pompeo has that written trump is full of blank so many times, he eventually just had it laminated and keeps it in his wallet just read that you could tell things were bad when even kim jonguns staffers said to bolton, good lord how do you work for that guy . And get this, according to bolton, he also mentioned various shocking statements trump made like when he said, invading venezuela would be cool. Its like when Abraham Lincoln said a battle with Confederate Forces at gettiesburg would be dope some entertainment news. And this is nice, it even comes with a card that says, this is why mom left. You can order it like that, or ironically with a side of bacon. [ laughter ] thats right kids spent months searching for the perfect mothers day gift, and for fathers day, they are like, i got you some bacon. I really dont want bacon in bed. Come on. Come on. I want to be up. I want to be in the morning, im up i dont want to wake up and drowsily eat like a little coffee and freshly squeezed juice in bed. Jimmy ew no good, good, cause thats not happening. Jimmy freshly squeezed juice. And finally, this is fun you know, tamagotchis do you remember those virtual pets from the 90s . Jimmy yeah, of course i did know that fact of course, yes im sure you know that black people never got the 40 acres and a mule because president johnson annulled that part of the proclamationproclamation jimmy thats so messed up is the thing that i tell my friends when we talk about this on many days that are not just today. Jimmy my first guest tonight is a twoof time golden globe winner and oscar nominated actor. Heres my chat with don cheadle. Jimmy don cheadle, thank you so much for doing the show i appreciate it. You know, youre one of my favorite people out there. Thank you for doing this i appreciate it. Now im very glad to be here, jimmy, good to see you man, likewise these are unprecedented times right now. How are you and your family doing right now . Um, you know, were all right, were hanging in. I have adult kids that have, had moved out last year right before a lot of this stuff started happening and my youngest was just about to move in to the workforce and she did actually work as my assistant for a month and that didnt work out but, you know, its definitely a very tricky time for them trying to navigate everything thats happening right now obviously, so, yeah, unprecedented times, as you said jimmy i saw you on a few things one was the can you hear us now, which was an nbc news special that they did, that you took part of and you were talking about the first time that you realized that there was a difference between how you were treated and how white people were treated by the police. Yeah, i mean, its something that started, you know, i think, a lot of black people have this story of how their parents had to caution them about how to comport themselves when they would came in to contact with Law Enforcement and the rules of how to just make sure you come home, and be safe and what you had to do. So, unfortunately, its something that was put in to our minds very early but i grew up initially in kansas city, missouri, around all my family in a a predominantly black neighborhood so and i dont even recall ever seeing the police really, and never in our neighborhoods and never being anything that was to worry about but then when i moved in to the suburbs and we were the minority there, it it was very different. Thats when i first knew, thats when a lot of bullying started. When i was at school and definitely predicated on race. And thats when, you know, it started to be clear that yeah, the cops were not on team don. And that was, there was a different treatment. And its something that continued, you know, when i moved to los angeles under daryl gates and the Hammer Program in l. A. , which was just really, really, i think, i dont even know even if it was officially that it was coined that it was to stop and harass black and brown people, but that was the sort of unofficial, official interdepartmental terminology that they used for the Hammer Program, what it was for and what it was designed to do to intimidate and to sort of make sure everybody knew who was really running things in l. A. So, we would get stopped, i mean, i got stopped more times than i can count and guns put to my head, and i always jimmy really i always fit the description. I used to finish their sentences, they go, well, were stopping you because i go, i fi the description, i know i fit the description. I always fit the description so, this is something that was happening over and over again. I had a few good friends that were almost killed by the police for nothing so this is not something that was new to me once all these videos started coming out. Its things that we knew very well that were happening they just werent being filmed will was quoted, i think, as saying, its not happening more, its just taped more, were seeing it more. Jimmy earlier this month, you moderated a town hall with joe biden. How was Vice President biden it was great. I mean, its great that he put himself out there like that and that he allowed himself to be questioned and to kind of not necessarily know what was going to be coming in. But, you know, theres its going to be a hard road to hoe, its not this isnt going to be an easy election, and hes going to have to continue to show up and hes going to have to continue to really earn the spot, i think. And its going to be an uphill battle we still havent dealt with a lot of the voter fraud issues a lot of this the voter suppression. Jimmy yeah, i heard you talking about you know what happened in georgia. You know, it was jimmy oh, it was insane. That was crazy and i think were going to see a lot more of that and were going to see a lot more chicanery so people are going to have to remain vigilant and were going to have to really show up in numbers and jimmy and register to vote, and i guess, mail in your vote if you can, if you think you know who youre going to vote for, do it now yeah, absolutely. Get ahead of that. Jimmy i did see somewhere too, they were like, yeah, i think we will just going to go digital this year with the voting i go, oh, thats going to work. I mean jimmy you want my dad with facetime i mean, what its not going to work this is a terrible idea. And im not even on the board of anything. I think i just ordered postmates. I dont know if i voted for biden or if i just got some more fish. Jimmy either way, im getting it prime yeah, its coming fast. Its coming. Jimmy i dont know what i did, but its coming next week sounds great don, i want to talk about black monday, the continuation of your awesome show and maybe a little thing about space jam 2 if thats okay. Jimmy heres part two of my conversation with don cheadle. Jimmy we are back with don cheadle. Don, i wanna talk to you about black monday which i love. This is you know season two. And then it kind of just stopped because of quarantine and i was like, oh. Did you did you get all of the episodes filmed . Yeah, we actually were lucky. We got everything in the can, but, you know, we have, obviously a post process and thats when the quarantine happened so we hadnt finished all the effects and adding music and adr and coloring and all the stuff that we have to do at the end. So, we were lucky that a lot of these things could be, you know, could happen from peoples homes and but its incredible that you see how much you can get done, you know if you have to finish it in this way, you will finish it this way and well just all hold our breaths and hope that the quality remains strong, because its a its a good show jimmy the first episode, its not a spoiler to anyone out there, but you do participate in a danceoff [ laughter ] was that a shout out to maybe, like, your old whos in the music video . Werent you in, like, an old music video from, like, the i was in i was in an Angela Winbush video it was not my idea when we were talking about who would be great to cast in the part, just in the part itself and dule hills name came up i was like, yeah, dule. For sure, hes amazing. And then i was talking to the producers and i said, you know that dule is a world class dancer. Theyre like, no, we didnt know that. We have to get that in the episode. I said, yeah, we have to figure that out. So, our insane writers room, you know, you throw them that sort of meat, theyre gonna figure out what to do with it. So it just turned into a a very a very hilarous moment on screen jimmy it was awesome i think the first time i i i i met you, we were i was on the dance floor i dont know if you remember this oh, i remember it i dont know if you remember it cause [ laughter ] i dont know if you were in the cuffs. Like, the very first moment that i actually made eye contact with you in my life, in person you looked at me, i looked at you, and you started walking over you started taking off your shirt, i was like, whoa, whoa. You said, oh, i completely misinterpreted that look. [ laughter ] your look. Jimmy oh my and then jimmy what was i thinking . I dont know that you were thinking i think it was just an instinctual moment, cause that could have gone any number of ways [ laughter ] but thats when i immediately knew, i was like, oh, were gonna be fine. And then and then you and will and i you and will ferrell and i, spent spent about 30 minutes on trying to figure out who could make the dumbest entrance into a party from the stairs just for us. I mean, one of the greatest actors in the world. I remember Philip Seymour hoffman comes over and he sat down with us and we were just taking turns. And he sat there for a couple minutes and then he was like, you guys are idiots. [ laughter ] and he just walked off like, i dont even know why i came over here. Jimmy god, that was so fun, man. Yeah, no, its just for us. Jimmy before before i let you go, i have to ask about space jam 2 because what can we say about it . We know that youre in it, right . Can you confirm that youre in it or no i will confirm that i am in space jam 2, yes jimmy did you flip out did you freak out . Are you a space jam fan . Are you a fan of lebron . Of course i mean, the opportunity to be in that movie in any capacity but the part that i got to play its its really great and lebron was really you know, it was just amazing to see how how he took it on you know, he was still dealing with an injury at that time, and we were shooting the kinds of hours that he is not used to we were, like, shooting 14 hour days and he was still in the process of putting the Team Together you know, a. D. Was coming over so, we would we would shoot and then he would go play a pickup for a couple hours and then have to be back on the set at 6 00am. Jimmy you get to play with lebron at all . No comment. Jimmy ah, oh, ah, okay all right. This is even sometimes no comment is better than comment i love it. I know, its the whole commment, right . Jimmy now i wanna see the whole thing. Jimmy reverend al sharpton is an activist who has been on the front lines fighting for civil rights for decades here is my conversation with reverend al sharpton jimmy reverend al sharpton, thank you so much for being on the tonight show. I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me thank you for having me, jimmy. Good to see you. Jimmy ive known you for for years and even before i knew you, i would see you on the news and id see you at every rally and every fight if there was a fight for racial injustice, you would be there. I have to commend you on continuing to be there and always showing up, i know, were not completely satisfied, not even close, but there has been some change with the nypd at least is it repeal 50a was that name of the 50a, where theres now transparency, where we can now see a policemans background what the complaints have been down through the years, whether they have had other accusations. And last friday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed 12 laws, one was 50a, which a lot of groups fought for there was a lot of groups out there. Lot of lawyers out there but he also signed ending the chokehold. He also assigned two other bills that we had all been fighting for including stopping false racially based 911 calls when the woman went in central park and made this racial charge, for a guy saying put a a leash on your dog when the sign said that and, you know, ive known andrew cuomo for many years, i think that set a Real National model that can happen all over the country. In fact, he gave me the pens he signed with so i keep the pen in my pocket at least for a week or so because i felt it showed that home state, we can bring this to the nation. Now, we have the house of representatives proposing a bill in the senate, i hope that we just establish that policemen are not above the law. That they are subject to the law. And all police are not bad but those that are, ought to be treated like people that are bad in our community or in any community. We have to have equal justice under the law. You cant have police that can put thier knee on a mans neck and even after he is unresponsive, just keep it there and act like thats policing were better than that, and we should not try to take sides we ought to be on the said of whats right jimmy we had a conversation a couple of years ago, i dont know if you remember but, i want to say that you told me that james brown was one of your mentors. James brown, when i was a a teenager just starting a a youth group way before i started National Action network, his son teddy joined my youth group and unfortunately he was killed in a car accident so two radio personalities in new york, bob law and said that if you want to memorialize teddy, he knows a seniorage preacher and he knew him and you ought to do a memorial for him. So that to me, james brown did the memorial and i started doing Community Things that he would know about and he kind of adopted me as a son and he took me around, people would said i was a road manager i wasnt, i kept my Youth Movement going he taught authenticity hes always telling me, reverend, the way to really last and be someone that makes an impact is be yourself. He said i was unlike some other soul artists, i did not water down what i was about. I made main street come to me, and i didnt go to main street. And thats why ive always had my own style and my own way of doing things as fathers day comes up, i will think of james brown. In fact, you know when this pandemics over you need to let me come and teach you how to do a little two one or two of the james brown steps. I can still do them. Jimmy come on, now dont laugh, let me tell you something, that is in my office i keep this picture where you were a young guy, when i hosted saturday night live and we did a scene of going to bethleham. You were right there, the young jimmy fallon president ial candidate al sharpton, traceys there. And kenan. And this was 2003, so, if i could teach you how to ride a camel, i could teach you how to do the james brown. Jimmy oh, my gosh. I think i remember that. That was great um, the, you have a, a big march coming up in august in washington can we talk about that august 28th is the 57th anniversary of the 1 1963 march on washington, where Martin Luther king made epical speech known as i have a dream. His son Martin Luther king iii, a human rights activist in his own right and i called at the floyd funeral for, lets reconvene and march to protect the criminal Justice System and the Police Reform movement and voting rights. Because we have an election this year, and we dont want to see any impediments to the vote so were calling on people to come from around the country, people to go on our website, or our organization National Action network and sign in. And his daughter king and others have called their and many other organizations. And we want black and white and latino, and asian and native american to come together in the spirit of dr. King to say, its time for us to come together and correct policing in the country, pass real legislation and to protect the vote like they did 57 years ago. People that believe in violence, not invited. People that believe in bringing the country together, thats your day to meet us in washington jimmy i love that. Tomorrow is juneteenth how are you going to celebrate that holiday i was invited to tulsa, oklahoma, where there was the scene of the 1921 race riot that destroyed black wall street and they have a big celebration every year i was asked to come and key note by the family that was a victim of terrence crutchers family, a victim of a Police Killing and dr. Tiffany crutcher asked me to come ill be there. I had accepted to come before i even knew President Trump was coming the president was coming that day. Hes coming out the next day but i want to stand with that family and say that just like we dealt with the race riots in 21, and we remember what happened in 1865 with juneteenth we can remember what we are facing now, and move on. It is the day to mark the end of slavery its the first time in the history of this country that legal slavery was over and still we had fights after that jim crow and lynchings and all amd if we can come from those race riots and continue to fight against jim crow and against what divided us, we can today, keep fighting and stand together against the challenges of our day it was harder on them. Just think about, in those days they didnt have twitter they didnt have facebook. They didnt have cable tv where i have a show. They didnt have you they had to do it by word of mouth. But they did it. We have no excuse with all that we have to work with, not to bring people together. And thats going to be my message in tulsa tomorrow. Jimmy reverend al sharpton, youve been in the forefronts of fighting for civil rights for decades and i just want to say thank you, and keep doing what you are doing, and keep inspiring people and keep inspiring me and i will get, i will get my moves ready for when i see you in person, okay .
