With the endracism. The mayor condemned the nooses and allowanced the police would launch a hate Crime Investigation. The mayor said even though there were claims the nooses were used for exercise equipment, that does not excuse them. When officers searched the lake, they found five ropes attached to multiple trees. We spoke to one africanamerican man who shared this video of people using the ropes as swings. He tells us theyve been up for months and the purpose was to have fun, not to instill fear. Maybe that big, just enough to put a harness on it so you can swing yourself. We have to start with the assumption that these are hate crimes. We cannot take these actions lightly. We have to take them seriously. Reporter and the mayor says the findings from opds hate Crime Investigation will be turned over to the fbi. Doing a beautiful job with the yard by the way. Up next, fighting discrimination. Janelle rejoins us with the story of one womans mission to fight racism and sexism at work. Oh, we love our new home. Neighborhoods great. Amazing school district. The hoa has been very involved. These shrubs arent board approved. You need to break down your cardboard. Thank you. Violation. Violation. I see youve met cynthia. At least geico makes bundling our home and Car Insurance easy. And it does help us save a bunch of money. Two inches over regulation. Thanks, cynthia. For bundling made easy, go to geico. Com that could mean an increase byin energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or closing your shades during the day. Stay well and keep it golden. Racism in america, the country is having this conversation right now, and it is creating change. But what about facing racism and sexism at the same time . Thats what a lot of young black women face in the workplace. So a nonprofit called black female project addresses that. It was founded by precious jay stroud because of the racism she faced years ago. She now shows young black women how they can thrive at work and prepares them for the reality of the workplace. Being disregarded, having to prove themselves over and over again. Black women are off not promoted. Promotability is a big problem, because often were told you have to pay your dues, and we did. And were told you have to work harder, which is not true. We just have to keep working smart. And still you dont get promoted because not because people dont believe that you can, but simp hi because y simply because you dont look like a leader. So they get passed over and just often theyre isolated because theyre the only so often were the only black woman or the only black person, sometimes in a department, sometimes in an organization. So what can companies, managers, and coworkers do . They said they should learn about black people and african history to have a Broader Knowledge of what the africanamerican experience is. Also, just get to know your employees. Celebrate their differences and commonalities. Stroud sees progress when it comes to workplace diversity, equity and inclusion. As we know, Many Companies have already implemented programs like that in the workplace and many more are starting now. So our entire conversation iswe. Thank you, janelle. Up next at 6 30, an Atlanta Police officer charged with murder after shooting and kicking a man on the ground. Tonight, the mans widow has a message. Also, talking to your mixed race children about Police Violence and the recent protests. One father shares with us his unique perspective. Yeah yyeah yeah hey, hey i felt everything he felt just by hearing what he went through. And it hurts. It hurt really bad. The widow of Rayshard Brooks tells a tearful story about how she felt when she learned how her husband had died. The former Atlanta Police officer who killed brooks is now facing murder charges. Tonight, we have new details about the moments after Rayshard Brooks was shot. The initial facetoface encounter between Garrett Rolfe and brooks appeared routine. He fail at sobriety test. Then rolfe and his partner attempted to arrest brooks. Thats when brooks grabbed a taser and ran. This video shows brooks turning and appearing to aim the taser at the officers. Rolfe then shot brooks twice in the back. We concluded at the time mr. Brooks was shot that he did not pose an immediate threat of death. Prosecutors say Surveillance Video shows rolfe kicking brooks even after he was shot. Brosnan, the other officer, is charged with aggravated assault for standing on brooks in the parking lot. He has agreed to testify against his former partner. Among the Difficult Conversations we are having is with our kids. Parents are searching for ways to inform and protect kids but listen to them. David kaufman is a father to twin boys almost 4 years old. Kaufmans that a unique perspective as a black father who he has kids that look white. He wrote an opinion piece and it caught our attention, particularly a recent interaction that he had. I let my son, who is very, very fair skinned, stumble upon the front lawn of a neighbor of my moms earlier this week. What i realized was that i would never have allowed my child to stumble upon a neighbors yard if he had been black, if he had been africanamerican presenting. To put it straight, i wouldnt have allowed it, because i would have been afraid my kid would have been shot. After a simple walk around the neighborhood, i was sit dow jones with my mom, it dawned upon me that the magnitude of what i had just done and the ease which i had allowed him to stumble upon a neighbors yard and it would have never happened if he was black presenting. You as a black man walking with kids that appear to be white, do you get looks . Oh, yeah. I get looks. And recently since were talking with george floyd and of course, in the wake of Trayvon Martin and all of these other horrible cases, im Walking Around quite often scared, quite often worried. As my kids get older, theyre more rambunctious and defiant, its harder to get them into the stroller. They fight me and scream and say daddy, leave me alone. Im often quite concerned that some wellmeaning white person is going to call the cops on me and the cops might roll up and shoot me. Were having this conversation for obvious reasons, but this has been the case for a long time, has it not . Absolutely. I think the challenge is that we see all of these sort of white parents, like my own mom, but madonna and folks like that having dark or mixed race or children of color. We dont really have a context in america for darker people, africanamericans to have white presenting children. So i think its a societal conundrum and the world is not really sure how to deal with it. So that gives me a lot of concern. But what can i do . 6 or 12 months from now, will this still be at the forefront of everyones conversation . I believe so. This is a different moment from what we saw five years ago with the first iterations of black lives matter and all of these protests. I think the big changes, its all happening against the backdrop of the coronavirus, of people trapped in their homes, of massive, massive unemployment, huge financial worries. I think all those white people out there arent just protesting for the black people in their lives, i think theyre protesting for themselves. They also feel something thats fundamentally broken here, and that if we dont get up and change it, nobody will. David kaufman, thank you for your time. We appreciate it. Thank you. Well, an east bay hospital is failing to keep staff safe from violence thats what cal osha said. It was months ago our Investigative Unit highlighted growing incidents of Workplace Violence. Candas wen joins us now. Reporter inspectors issued three safety related citations. One for failure to establish a violence prevention plan. This comes more than six months after the nurses union filed a complaint with osha. Nbc bay area found over the last three years california hospitals reported nearly 23,000 assaults against workers. One of those incidents involves anthony ashley, a nurse at st. Rose hospital who says he was attacked by a visitor in the emergency room. His incident prompted the California Nurses Association to file a cal osha complaint in september. My attempts to deescalate him resulted in him physically attacking me. I sustained a broken rib and other injuries and he was arrested for felony assault charges. Reporter earlier this year, we told you Health Care Employees are four times more likely to experience Workplace Violence compared to other private workers. St. Rose hospital disputes what happened to ashley, and disagrees with cal oshas investigation. Thats absolutely false. Theres an excellent Workplace Violence plan. In fact, in this instance, the violence was committed by this male nurse against the visitor. I taped myself up and went back to work that very night. But for them to call me in the office and accuse me of being at fault in this was hurtful. Reporter while ashley was supported by 50 of his colleagues outside st. Rose wednesday, other employees in different units say they feel safe at the hospital. Im here for the hospital, and im here for our patient services. Im here as a nurse, who is out to take care of people. Reporter we posted a copy of the hospital violations on nbcbayarea. Com. The hospital plans to appeal. Thank you. Not expecting it to be as windy for tomorrow. Well talk about those hotter temperatures coming up. Its been almost three months since the c. A. R. E. S. Act passed congress, but many peoples stimulus payments are still going out. But some people are making a mistake that causes a longer delay. Okay, if were adding problems to this, thats even worse. Yeah, two problems to talk about, jessica. Some people are getting cards in the mail. But when those cards arrive in the mail, they look like junk mail, so people are tossing them. Well show you the envelope and warn you about some fees using that card that could eat up your emergency money. People thought that which scam letters. Reporter and you cant blame them. Uncle sam sent millions of stimulus cards, reading Money Network card holder services. If you receive a card that looks like this, please, do not throw it away. Reporter if you threw away your card, you can order a replacement by calling this number. But each if you did open the envelope and decided to trust the cardin side, the aarp said you had good reason to be suspicious. They had to provide most of their social security, six digits. Lets rewind. Watch the bottom this time. Shop and take a look online. Reporter right there. Certain fees and costs may be associated with the use of this card. Withdraw cash. Reporter and there it is again. Fees. Congress said it fast tracked the stimulus bill to get money to families fast, and kickstart our economy. But bank middlemen stand to collect some of your money with fees. Theyll take 2 if you use an out of network atm more than once. Think youll withdraw your full 1200 payment at once . You cant. Theres a 1,000 limit per day. Even if you check your balance, theyll take 25 cents. So why are there fees in the first place . We asked the treasury. It said the fees are part of a broader 2016 contract it signed with the banks that issued the cards. The National Consumer law center sees it as a payday for banks at your expense. Its not always to people how to cash that money out. Reporter you can find all the fees in the card member agreement that comes with your card. Read it or better yet, just go into a bank and withdraw your money. Yes, you can. Thats not always known, but prepaid cards, you can go into any visa member bank and ask for a withdrawal from the teller. Reporter fee free, which is really good. Okay, if you havent gotten a paper check or direct deposit, you might be paid using one of these debit cards. So look for that envelope, the one that really doesnt have much writing on it. Make sure you call in for a replacement. The number to call in is right there on your screen, 8002408100. If you dont like this middleman setup or fees, tell your representatives in the house or senate. We put a way to find them on our web sociesite website, nbcbayarea. Com. Back to you guys. Very good work, chris. Thank you. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Jessica, we got summer coming up, and fathers day this summer. So a lot of people getting that barbecue ready. Summer starts this weekend, jeff. Yes. Going to be a big weekend for a lot of families out there. Right now, we have the sun out, warmer temperatures today. Going to go even hotter through tomorrow. And then eventually as we move through this weekend, well start to see changes. Right now, the ocean breeze is beginning to pick up a little bit here over in the east bay. So thats helping those temperatures to drop off right now. Lets get you outside. Mostly clear skies in san jose. And our temperatures not good enough for a record. Even though it was warm. We got up to 91 in santa rosa. The record is 100. And the record here in livermore, 104. So thankfully it was not that hot. Whats bringing the heat . Its all about hot High Pressure. And we really think its going to be at its max as we head through tomorrow with that heat. And, you know, while it was windy this morning, tomorrow will be breezy on and off, 5 to 15 Miles Per Hour with that dry northnortheasterly wind. But its not going to be extremely gusty. So we are not in fire warning red flag warning status. So as we move through tomorrow mornings forecast, starting off warmer with 70 in the trivalley. Also going for a warm 71 in the east bay. Fogfree San Francisco, 66. And the north bay with those upper 60s. So heres the deal. As we move through tomorrow, with High Pressure reaching its maximum strength, pulling in all of that hot air, its going to bring us up to 95 in downtown san jose. Right over to the east bay, well get into our hottest weather here. Walnut croaeek, danville, livermore, going to help heat up the air, oakland warming up to 89 degrees. Right over to the peninsula, 93 in palo alto. And daley city take notice, up to 74. San francisco, little bit of everything here. 66 in the marina. 71 in the outer sunset. And the warm spot, the mission at 80. And right through wine country here, napa, sonoma, low to mid 90s. Ukiah, a very hot 98 degrees. So my extended forecast looks like this. 70s next two days in San Francisco. Summer arrives on saturday. Dropping down to 60s and 60s next week. Looks really good there in San Francisco. For the inland valleys, 97 tomorrow, a little breezy. 90 on friday and hold with those low 90s as we head through the upcoming weekend. Then some 80s by next monday, tuesday, and also on wednesday.
