People marched all the way from the high skpochool down to city hall, demanding the city Defund Police and that justice is served for the victims of Police Shootings. In vallejo, a demonstration as people demand justice for a young man shot and killed by police last week. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith joins us live from the Vallejo Police department where civil rights attorney burris is expected to speak about the death of sean monterrosa. Reporter there are a lot of calls in this crowd for Vallejo Police to quickly release that body cam video after the Police Shooting of sean monterrosa. But i want to step aside so you can see what the crowd is like here. Very large crowd carrying signs, many of them justice for sean, as well as signs with other names of people who have died at the hands of police. First they gathered at city hall and then marched over near the Police Department. Thats where we are. Many with signs like black lives matter and of course that of george floyd. There are speakers right now talking with the crowd, denouncing racism. One Organizer Says he wants to support the families that need justice and also theyre calling for reducing Police Funding and putting more into social programs and having community oversight. They say they want to empower people and also keep the momentum going. We want to demand change in vallejo. Were going to have our demands given out at the Police Department of what we want to see. We want people to use this as a day where you can learn and then learn what you can do after. Reporter monterrosa was shot by Vallejo Police when they responded to reports of looting. According to the police chief, an officer fired through his windshield five times thinking that he saw the butt of a handgun. Well, that turned out to actually be a hammer. An attorney today says he thinks that sean was going on his knees and putting his hands up at the time when the officer fired. And according to him, that there was not an immediate danger. The department was also criticized for the length of time it took to announce that he had died. Now, the chief said in a recent video that the department has made advancements towards what he called 21st Century Policing since he took over. The chief did say he would release that footage as soon as he can. He believes in transparency. Of course they have 45 days to do so. Were told that back here live, some of the folks who are here plan to, after this is over, head over to the walgreens where the Police Shooting happened and hold a vigil over there. Many carried signs calling for justice and to Defund Police. The demonstration lasted for hours, tied up some traffic along the way. Santa clara county voters approved the funding 20 years ago. That was 12 years before vta broke ground in 2012. After years of delays, service was supposed to begin on new years day. It was pushed until today. This is just the first phase of this south bay extension. Keep that in mind. The next phase will extend b. A. R. T. Into san jose and then santa clara, but that is years away. Lets take a look at covid19 cases now here in the bay area. Bay area now with just more than 17,000 cases. Santa clara county overnight reported 40 new cases. Contra costa county, 44 new cases. Napa county, 15. And that county now has a total of 183. Well, berkeley is opening streets, making them safer for the public. The city calls this berkeley healthy streets. Its to allow for walking, bicycling, exercising, while still social distancing. You can see the streets right here. Ninth street between hurst and dwight and addison between sacramento and grant. Cars will be able to drive through those streets but they are driving really slow. So bicyclists and everyone else is safe. Today, making sure dentists are safe and have personal protective equipment. Alameda county Emergency Medical Services are giving thousands of ppe to the countys dental society. Efforts like this are happening more and more as the economy continues to reopen. We need personal protective equipment to not only take care of our patients safely, but we also need to make sure that the dentists and their staff are totally protected. The donation includes six tons of ppe materials including 10,000 of those things right there, face shields. All of this will be distributed to dentists in alameda, oakland, and emeryville. Police say someone started six brush fires overnight in the north bay, and this evening investigators think they may have the man who set them in custody. The fires burned in cor ta madera and larks spur late last night and again this morning. Video here for you. Police have arrested a 61yearold man in connection with these fires after someone saw him near one of them. Police have him on a probation violation. They dont have him for arson. No one hurt. Fire is seeing increased activity and d this fire season, there is the added danger of covid19 to teams battling the flames. Cal fire monitoring the health of its firefighters through temperature checks and symptom screenings on large incidents. Fires agencies across the state are on their toes. Absolutely concerns us to have to deal with what could be a very busy fire season and coupled with a pandemic. Those are two very challenging things, but we are ready to meet that challenge. Heres another location that you usually see highs closer to about 80 degrees. So in terms of the air quality, as we go back to that, the wind is helping to keep our skies mostly clear and good air quality for all your outdoor plans on sunday though you may need an umbrella early in the day. You can see whats happening here on the satellite and radar view. A few showers up along the north coast and the higher hills in northwestern sonoma county. More low clouds across the bay heading into tonight, which we do think will be enough lift to some of that measure to measure up in the form of a little bit of rain showing up, especially around the peninsula and the coast and inland for the morning. Very likely we start the day with a lot of cloud cover. You can see showers start to show up later tonight and along the coast into tomorrow. Then right around midmorning, everything changes here. Look how the skies start to clear. Winds start to pick up a little bit out of the westnorthwest, which will help to lead to that inland clearing. Still some clouds on the coast and overall a bit of a warmer finish to your sunday afternoon compared to the highs you just said. Morning temperatures in the 50s thanks to clouds and drizzle at times. As we head through the afternoon, notice the temperatures do start to climb up, closer to 80 degrees tomorrow in san jose. Think of sunday as more typical in terms of your afternoon temperatures with some low 80s around the trivalley. Low to mid70s closer to oakland. Peninsula temperatures generally in the 70s as you head from san mateo down into palo alto. 60s coast side. San francisco briefly near 70 degrees during the afternoon and north bay temperatures should climb into the mid80s for tomorrow around santa rosa and about 78 degrees in mill valley. So just like it seems like this is the fourth week in a row weve had a midweek warmup, there you go. Wednesday into thursday, High Pressure strengthens so you get a little taste of summer, which is appropriate considering next saturday is officially the summer solstice. The mayor announced today she had accepted the resignation of police chief erika shields, shields a 20 year veteran of the force. She is stepping down after an officer shot and killed rayshard brooks, a 27yearold black man. Video shows brooks struggling with officers right there as they tried to arrest him on suspicion of drunk driving. He overwhelms the police, gets away. It appears he takes one of their tasers. He was shot after a brief chase. The mayor says she does not believe the shooting is justified. Chief shields has offered to immediately step aside as police chief so that the city may move forward with urgency in rebuilding the trust so desperately needed throughout our communities. The mayor is also calling for the immediate termination of the officer who opened fire on brooks. President trump made a trip to west point today to deliver a unique commencement ceremony.
