We are standing here outside of San Francisco and to them they had a model to work with and they knew what to do and this is what they came up with. They moved tables. They have signs for social distancing out here and masks. And i tell you, people are out here enjoying it and we spoke with the managers of other restaurants who say they worked quickly to make it happen. In the Marina District these two did something they have not done in a while, made a reservation to dine at a restaurant. I wanted to capture it. The manager said they have been spending their week cleaning, sanitizing, getting masks so they would be ready to reopen the patio and meet safety protocols and they also requested the city give them extra space. We prepared everything. We set up four tables. We just got the news on tuesday we can open on friday. We had to scramble a little bit. At waterbar they removed about half of the patio tables to account for social distancing rules and also have personal protective equipment ready. They are not ready for the full dinein experience yet but say customers can stay and eat on the patio and the bar is open today and there is more to come. There is a lot of work that goes into getting the restaurants ready and we will be doing, you know, full Table Service at all of the patio tables starting on monday. Preliminary guidance on reopening came out this week but wasnt finalized until yesterday evening. Today the mayor visited a restaurant to check out what the shared Spaces Program would look like and offered advice. Do your best. Provide the distance. We have been talking about it. Do your best. None of us expect it to be in the middle of a global pandemic. We are very excited and enthusiastic to open up. And back here live, again, there is actually a line out here. It looks like folks really want to come and dine outside. We did see restaurants that have not reopened their outdoor seating yet but several of the managers said they were looking forward to this and the next phase and of course bringing their workers back. Volunteers came out this morning to paint black lives matter in the big bold yellow letters near city hall. The artist said he wants it to be a lasting message. This is a constant reminder. You walk out of your doors or see it from an aerial view it is a reminder that black lives matter. It is all about capturing the moment we are in. We are in a moment of empowerment for black people and people of color. The street murals first showed up in washington d. C. And now hundreds across the bay area. Color, creativity all for social justice. Now who is organizing all of this. Jonathan joins us from oakland. Really quick, how did it start . Sort of my accident to be honest with you. I woke up saturday morning after the first protest. I walked downtown oakland two blocks from my house with a broom and trash bag and asked where i can help. Business owners needed help sweeping up. I knew an owner and they had a broken window and asked if i could find an artist that could paint one of their pieces of plywood. I put out a call to action and the next morning about 75 people showed up. Not to lose momentum but it is not an organization of any sort, we did it pretty organically. After about nine days of 10 to 12 hours per day we had hundreds of people coming through and ended up giving away about 300 gallons of paint to simply go on to the walls to beautify oakland. These are really talented artists. Where are you finding them . Are they formally trained . Yeah. You ask a really good question. The truth is that we were not the only epicenter for this to occur. It spread like wildfire. Artists found us and the other locations. Social media. There is an effort to find local artists and pair them with local businesses. Many of the folks are people that do it all the time and some were the first out, people looking for a place to park their energy and create a more enduring message related to those already flowing around about the movement. Any push back from Business Owners or Community Members saying we dont like it or appreciate it . Yeah. That is a really good question. I think about that sometimes in relationship to mine own effort. I am an ally in the movement and my objective is to create space for those that need their voices heard. There has been a lot of concern about the more destructive nature of the protests at nighttime. What happens at nighttime is important. It is messy. But it is important and at the end of the day people need to scream and we are following it up in the daytime making it more enduring and clear that people can understand. Truthfully they hear the message and might not understand the chaos of it all but they understand the beauty of the art. Our largest objective is to be a translation layer for that and i am here to serve the community in whatever way they need. I asked where help was needed and that was well received. It is challenging. Business owners are not always there. Sometimes there is one to occur but ultimately everybody showed up with love and that is where it came from. Overall we have not seen a lot of push back but it is an evolving situation and we will see how all of it unfolds. We want to work towards prese e preservati preservation. We want to remember why we were down here in the first place and we cant forget the gains we are making. You grew up in San Francisco and live in oakland. What is your message to everybody . The message is dont stop the effort. You know, find ways to harness your energy. Find ways to support the community. If you are a white person find ways to support people right no with people. At the end of the day we can all come together and do community building. I am inspired right now and i hope to keep the movement going. Jonathan delong, thank you for your time this evening.
