We will have more in a live report and we will talk to the mayor of st. Paul, minnesota, who is the son of a Police Officer, about the practical changes that may come of this moment. Later in our spotlight, harry smith looks at the history of protests in america, turning energy in the streets into change for the country. People who are white or other races who dont feel this kind actually imagine what itsitdown washington. Plus another life well lived later in the show. Lets begin with a 12th night of protest after another day of largescale demonstrations in major cities across the country. Steve patterson is in minneapolis where george floyd was killed 13 days ago. Lets not forget, there were protests all over the world from paris, where citizens took to the streets, to london, where citizens took to the streets. The officer accused of killing floyd is scheduled to appear in court this week. Floyds brother scheduled to testify before congress on police practices. Willie . Steve patterson starting us off in minneapolis this morning. Steve, thank you very much. St. Paul is the twin city to minneapolis. Melvin carter is the mayor. Good morning. Its great to have you with us. You have a unique and important voice in this national whaand whats become an international protest. The son of a st. Paul Police Officer who served for 30 years. How you have tried to bridge the divide between the Africanamerican Community in st. Paul and the Police Department, a conversation i know that for you didnt start ten days ago with the death of george floyd but probably has been ongoing inside even your own family . Thats a great point. Thanks for having me on. This conversation did not start ten days ago. This conversation started a very long time ago. As we know that whats played out in our country over the last two weeks has unfortunately played out too many times over and over and over that those folks who are angry and traumatized over the video of George Floyds murder have been anger and traumatized before and before that and before that again as George Floyds name has gotten added to a too long list of names of unarmed, unaggressive africanamerican men killed by police. The thing is for me, theres no divide. I grew up in that household, as you mentioned, and would see my father i would see my father put on his badge, put on his uniform and use it as a force for good to just help solve problems in our community in a way that he wouldnt have been able to had he not lived in the community in that way. At the same time, i grew up as an africanamerican man in america and know what it feels like to be pulled over for driving while black. Im looking forward to us having a space where we can bridge those divides and thankful to serve in a city where we have a department and a chief who is focused on building those bridges, on expanding our Community Engagement unit in our Police Department, expanding our sense of accountability and making sure our officers actions are held to a standard as our police chief says of reasonable, necessary and respectful. You came into office about 2 1 2 years ago, mr. Mayor, talking about a lot of these issues that now have come to the national forefront. Theres a movement now called eight cant wait. Eight recommendations to change policing across the country. You have signed on to that. One of those is banning choke holds, the kind that killed george floyd. Have you banned choke holds in st. Paul as well as they have take than step in minneapolis . Yes. We certainly have. Its important to note, the choke hold, the kind that killed george floyd and the kind that killed eric garner, the fact if i tell you about the africanamerican man unarmed, unaggressive who was killed by police while crying, i cant breathe, i would have to clarify for you who i was talking about, whether i was talking about george floyd or eric garner. That speaks volumes. Yes, we actually have banned choke holds for quite some time now. We have a list of uses of force that are acceptable and choke holds have never been on that list. Choke holds havent been on that list for some time. We dont train on it. We dont accept it. We did as of friday specifically change our use of force policy to specifically say, we dont do that. Before i let you go, mr. Mayor, a lot of people have said this time feels different based on the people who are in the street, across races, across age groups, that perhaps this time there will be real change. What do you make of that actual is different . Im very hopeful that this time can feel different, this time does feel different and feels kind of palpable in the streets and it seems like everywhere i go, unfortunately, this video is so offensive to the human spirit that its difficult to turn away from. Its difficult to deny. We, of course, still have people unfortunately, in some of our top offices, that think our challenges with police are a function of a few bad apples. But when we have one officer killing george floyd surrounded by three our officers who are accepting it, it speaks to a culture that must end much the people out in the street, the people in our community who are frustrated and fed up, i have been calling for peace but not patient, which is to say channel this energy into building a different future, lets channel this energy into changing that culture, lets channel this energy into destructing and dismantling the legal precedents, the legislation, the police Union Contracts that make it so difficult for officers to be held accountable when Something Like this happens. If we do, i think we will find this to be the same energy that built our country, abolished slavery, and this is the energy that will carry us through to the next chapter. A lot of people hope you are right about that. Mayor Melvin Carter of st. Paul, minnesota. Such an important voice in this big conversation. Thank you for your time this morning, mr. Mayor. We appreciate it. Thank you. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. You have a big poll that you are going to roll out on meet the press this more th this morni. One number that jumps out is that 80 eight zero of americans believe that the country is out of control. What do you read into that number . What is it telling you . Well, willie, think about how this year began. It began with an impeachment. Then it moved to a pandemic. We went from a Health Crisis to an economic crisis. Now we have this, which is our original virus in this country, front and center for us. With the protests and s in some it shows you the American Public is paying attention. The American Public is wondering where washington is. It is felt. More than any of the other levels of elected leadership in this country, on the national level, everybody has looked paralyzed, President Trump in particular. His hand on the Steering Wheel is a bit out of control here. Does anybody else have the ability to take the wheel . I think thats the reflection you see in this poll. Yeah. Its fascinating. Its probably reflected on the other side. Some americans look at whats in the streets and they feel like that looks out of control to them. The president obviously had a moment early this week where the square across from the white house, lafayette park, was cleared so he could have a photo op walking through that square going to st. Johns. To stand there holding a bible. Didnt visit the church. Didnt pray. Held the bible. Said it was a bible. He drew heavy criticism from generals for that move. He drew criticism even from some republicans who have been reluctant to criticize. Will we look back on that as a big moment in Donald Trumps presidency . Look, i think we will. I think it is it will turn into one of those, you just have to say a word and it invokes an image, charlottesville, and with trump and you immediately go to that both sides thing that he did, helsinki, you go to the press conference with putin. In some cases, its that. Look, willie, we have to caution. Hes had so many of these moments that are the, boy, this could be it, and it began when he first started his campaign when he went after john mccain. It looks to many like, boy, that is that will be debilitating, for him it hasnt been. You have to ask yourself, its starting to accumulate. I think especially in this short period of time, the pandemic and the erratic handling of that, the erratic handling of the protests, its starting to leave a mark. As you say importantly, a long five months between now and election day. A lot can happen. Chuck, thank you very much as always. We look for more this morning on meet the press when chuck talks about whether this is a turning point for america with democratic senator cory booker of new jersey. Our first high goes to a show of support from the city of minneapolis, even as it has been rocked by the killing of george floyd. Last weekend, several local Grocery Stores were damaged and closed by riots in the neighborhoods where floyd was killed. That left many families in the surrounding area without access to food. A principal put out a plea to the community asking for 85 meal kits to help feed her students. Here is what she got instead. More than 30,000 meals delivered to the schools parking lot. Her initial request went viral and the donations came flooding in. In total, the food drive collected nearly 18 semi trucks worth of goods. The administrators brought in a local Nonprofit Organization to help distribute the food to those most in need across the city. Its amazing. This is minneapolis strong for sure. People coming together to help their community. Minnesota and minneapolis is about taking care of each other, serving each other, making sure the kids especially have the food they need. Minneapolis showing its true colors there. Well done. Our next high goes to the cupid shuffle, bringing people together since 2007. The Police Department in lincoln, nebraska, launched an initiative to improve communication and cooperation between police and community members. After the announcement, the music came on and officers and activists did the cupid shuffle line danogether, like you do. The new initiative called hold counts accountable calls for meetings everywhere where lincoln residents can voice issues with the Police Department. A similar scene in minneapolis where members of that Community Also danced the cupid shuffle. Look it up. During a protest. In washington, d. C. , it was a singalong that brought people together after several tense nights with demonstrators joining a chorus of the classic lean on me. Going to need somebody to lean on our final high to a roll reversal in new york city where citizens have been standing and applauding Health Care Workers for months. This week, doctors and nurses in new york, the epicenter of the Coronavirus Crisis in america, stepped outside of their hospitals as demonstrators passed by. Some of the doctors wearing per protective equipment there. Demonstrators outside nyus hospital could be heard chanting back, thank you, to the Health Care Workers, in a display of mutual appreciation. Some staff took a knee to show their solidarity with the protesters cause. In the meantime back to sunday today with willie geist. Its my point. You are going to have to be patient and wait for the officer to get here. Almost half an hour before i got to speak to you. I completely understand. Respectfully, officer, i dont think you do. I have kids. How old are they . Any of them black . Thats Kerry Washington in last falls netflix film adaptation of american son oran originally a play whose broadway run starred washington. Since the killing of george floyd in minneapolis nearly two weeks ago, american son has become a teaching tool for some families. It tells the story of a mixed race couple in florida whose son is missing after a traffic stop for a tense 90 minutes washington and her costars conflict policing, rascial profiling and what it means to be black in america. As it spited inwashington poste to spark conversation that would lead to change. We thought this would be a good week to revisit our sitdown from november with Kerry Washington. Kerry washington loves to put on a show. Over the course of her career, she has strived to do more than just entertain. She wants to make us think, too. Keep your hands on the wheel. Look straight ahead. Dont make any sudden move. Wouldnt want to make the man in the bullet proof vest nervous when he walks up to your window pointing a glock at your head. Its a look at race and policing in america. What do you hope someone who hasnt had these personal experiences takes away from watching this film . Black parents get to have their experience validated, honored in an open, honest, transparent way. That feels really important to me as a black parent. But also people who are white or other races would dont feel this kind of pressure, they get to actually imagine what it would be like. You have talked about this before. You worry about your own father. You have a son that you will have to talk to about this. A husband. How do you describe that fear as a daughter and a wife and a mother . And also for myself. When i have a Police Officer behind me, i pull over. I let them pass me. I will not let myself ride on the road with them behind me. The anxiety i know will force me to do something stupid. Then really get in trouble. Does he go by a street name . He doesnt have a street n m name. Im asking you to walk in my shoes for 90 minutes. Thats because we dont walk often in the shoes of black women in our culture, that is an act of activism. The 43yearold washington grew up in the bronx, new york. Her mother was a professor. Her father a realtor. I was, if you can imagine, a very dramatic child. Im shocked. Im shocked. My mom, god help her, because shes an educator she thought i have to give this kid a place to have all of these feelings, and its not my living room. Im going to put her in childrens theater company. So she was really able to see me for who i am. Then regret it later when i wanted to make a career out of it. Washington attended the Spence School in manhattan where she thrived in the classroom and on the stage. When did you feel yourself, hey, i have a knack for this . I was in a production of hamlet. I did my grand exit when she goes mad. I looked at my mom. She was crying. I remember being really impacted because my mother is not a cryer. But also because this woman who knows exactly who i am, if i could get her even for half a second to think that im somebody else, theres so much power in that. Washington went on to George Washington university. There she studied anthropology and sociology, in part to ease her mothers lingering concern that washington might become a starving artist. I gave myself a year after graduating where i had to book something really significant or i was going back to graduate school or law school. I was preparing to have a real backup plan. She didnt need that plan b. A year after graduating, washington was cast in save the last dance. You need some new moves, some flavor. You know who to call. In 2004, washington played ray charles wife alongside jamie foxx in the moving ray. What about me . What about your baby . She drew acclaim for powerful supporting performances in the film the last king of scotland and jango unchained. Then in 2012, washington took center stage when she landed a juicy life changing lead role as political fixer olivia pope on the Television Series scandal. Its read the script, i loved her. I actually had the experience of throwing the script across the room at some point because i just thought, these writers know me. This feels like it was written for me. Thats not throwing in anger . Thats throwing in wow . I couldnt believe how right it felt for me. The show ran for seven hit seasons. Washington was nominated for two emmys and a golden globe. Calming her mothers fears once and for all. I brought my parents with me to the ceremony. I waited until my mom was slicing into her fillet. I was like, starving artist . Who is starving now . Scandal was groundbreaking. Washington was the first africanamerican woman to front a Network Drama in nearly 40 years. I had never seen the black woman as the lead of a Network Drama. What does that mean to you . I knew that scandalthe wasnt a success, it could be another 40 years. Washington married in 2014. They have three children and as washingtons profile continues to rise, she works to keep her young family out of the spotlight. It must be hard to do on some level. Right . Im sure theres temptation to share. Here we are, were a happy family. I have moments where i take pictures or videos of one of my three amazing kids and i want to post it online. I tend to just send it to my parents or my shrink instead. My kids are so cute. I dont want to post about them. Look how cute they are. Your strifrhrink is your instagram. He loves it. My big thanks to Kerry Washington for that conversation back in november. American son is streaming now on netflix.
