Tonight join jimmy and his guests senator Bernie Sanders, dr. Bernice a. King, wyatt cenac, and the legendary roots crew its the tonight show at home edition. And now, heres jimmy jimmy welcome to the tonight show, everybody. Thank you for watching its been a long and intense week in this country and i really do appreciate you tuning in i know a lot of these conversations are a little bit uncomfortable. But they need to be had and were having them and were going to continue to have them so thank you again for joining me in these conversations. I think we have a very interesting and fun show for you. The senator from the great state of vermont, Bernie Sanders is on the program this evening also, shes the head of the king central. Ceo of the king central. Her father is dr. Martin luther king jr. And her mom is coretta king also the very funny wyatt cenac is on the show well close out the show with a performance from the roots first lets get to some news well, guys, a former member of Donald Trumps cabinet is speaking out against him that could be like one of 900 people but this happened to be his former defense secretary general james mattis in a statement, general mattis said, donald trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American People. Does not even pretend to try instead, he tries to divide us trump saw that and was like, why dont you be a man and tweet that to my face . Trump denied hes trying to divide us. Then he added more fencing between him and the protesters in case anyone forgot who general mattis is, heres a photo. He looks like every scooby doo villain who just had his mask yanked off several members of the military are criticizing trump. At the point the only military leaders who support him are these guys even his beloved friend general tso has turned on him. As the nation continues to deal with protests, it seems like the walls are closing in on President Trump literally. President trump beefing up the physical barriers between himself and protesters construction began before dawn on some additional fencing jimmy i think the fencing looks great. I always i wish the white house looked like a Little League back stop i think the fence would work well, too, unless protesters resort to the act of pushing trump is trying to protect the white house. He even ran around putting broken crisp ornaments under windows. Keep the change so far trump has turned off the white house lights, hid in a bunker and is now building an ugly chain link fence. Hes like every crazy neighbor rolled into one. I think hes had enough. Yesterday he tweeted, ive done more for black americans, in fact, than any president in u. S. History, with the possible exception of another republican president , the late great abraham lincoln. Yeah, with the possible exception of link on that. He did something what did he do me first, then maybe lincoln did something. Thats a real tweet. And it makes me wonder is there some connection between trump and lincoln that i dont know so i have principled out the actual text of lincolns gettysburg address it turns out the joke is on me here it is from 1863, the gettysburg address four score and seven years ago, our fathers, terrific people, fantastic fathers, brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty, a beautiful thing, liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, most equal couldnt be more equal we met on the great battlefield, the great classy field and were going to dedicate it to those who gave their lives. But in a larger sense, were going to dedicate it to me well put up a sign, a big beautiful sign that says lincoln field in huge gold letters with a golf course and a cabbana. Now were engaged if a great civil war. It is very unfair how ive been treated. The newspapers have not treated lincoln nicely they were very nasty you dont see them saying those thing about creepy custer. We here resolve under god, a great god, a good friends of mine, shall have a new birth of freedom. Especially when it colonels to the Second Amendment everyone has the freedom to fair a rifle, place a new bullet in the pouch, take out a long stick, shove it all down the barrel and fire again. If people want to fire as many as one bullet every three minutes, no government should be able to stop them. Not even the lincoln government. That government by lincoln, for lincoln, shall not perish from earth. If you need me, ill be in my bunker the best as if trump isnt dealing with enough, now social media coils are piling on were learning now that theyve decided not to promote Donald Trumps pages, saying it wont amplify. When trump heard the news, he pukd a rainbow he was so mad. Finally, weve been in quarantine for months and people are doing a lot more Online Shopping without even thinking i heard about a new thing you can download that helps you put your money in a place that makes a difference. You can do better. Together we can turn your bad taste into good action okay i have to go donate. Lets start with our first guest. The senator from vermont heres my zoom chat with senator Bernie Sanders senator sanders, thank you for being on my show and coming back to it. I know youre very, very busy. Thank you for having memylas our show, it was march 11th. You were in the studio on the tonight show in new york and that was the last show that we had a live audience. Yeah. Jimmy it feels like so long ago. It is a crazy, crazy time for our country and in fact the world. When we were kids, we studied history and we look at pivotal moments of the civil war, world war ii people will be looking back at this moment as justable unprecedented extraordinary moment in history. So many Different Things are coming together. Were looking at this terrible pandemic, over one hundred,000 people dead. We look at an economic collapse, 40 Million People losing their jobs you look at peoples consciousness regarding police brutality, and police murder, in minneapolis, and people responding appropriately to that and in the midst of this, you have a president who is a narcissist with a pathological liar, unfit for the job, and you add all those things together. This is where we are at the moment, in this moment and weve got to do everything we can to fight our way out of this and create the kind of country that we know that we can become jimmy lets start with talking about the protests what do these protests mean for our political future where do we go from here well, first of all, i have to tell you, as i look at the video and i look at the photographs of these beautiful, beautiful young people young africanamericans, and not so young, and whites and latinos and asianamericans. I have, people say, are you optimist for the future of the country and i will i see the beauty and the decency in these young people who want to create an america very, very different than the one we have right now. And they are standing up today saying that we do not want young africanamericans to be afraid about walking the streets. Or murdered by Police Officers but it goes beyond that. If youre looking at that generation today, those young people who are marching, my guess is 20, 25 of them do not have jobs. We were looking at the National Unemployment today were looking at young people who cant afford to go to college or coming out of School Deeply in debt 100 million americans with no Health Insurance today despite we pay the highest prices in the world for health care. And youre looking at so many of our people who are working for starvation wages so that is where we are and what these protests are about think, are americans from every background, every race, standing up and demanding justice demanding a government, an economy that works for all and not just a few you know a thing or two about protests do you remember your first protest in. Oh, god, ive been in so many yes. I certainly, when i was a young man at the university of chicago, way back when, i was arrested for protesting segregated schools in chicago. I was active in a civil rights movement, protesting against segregated housing so you know, and i had the honor of being at the march on washington for jobs and freedom when dr. King spoke. Jimmy wow ive been to many demonstrations throughout my life and all i can say is im very proud of the people who are standing up for justice and taking to the streets today. Jimmy do you see the charges against these Police Officers, a result of the protest . Absolutely. Absolutely i think what Everybody Knows is, this is not the first instance of a Police Torture and murder i mean, we all know the names. Weve seen it oh and over and over again it has gone on for decades when there were no cell phones recording. It has gone on and you have africanamerican mothers who today are scared to death of sending the kids out to the may ground because they might bump into some racist Police Officers. So what we have got to do among many other things, and some of us are working hard on this, is fundamental criminal justice and Police Department reform and essentially, what that reform is about is that Police Officers have got to be held accountable for their actions. And that certainly has not happened in the past no doubt in my mind, because millions of people have spent on up on this issue, were seeing some progress and i will tell that you keith ellison, the attorney general in minnesota, is going to do a very, very good job in prosecuting this case jimmy i want to talk about november when we get back. Do you mind sticking around another minute no problem. Jimmy well be back. Were ready to welcome you back. And we want you to know that the starbucks app is the easiest way to find your store, order ahead, pay, and pick up your favorites. We cant wait to see you again. Thank you so much for being here i appreciate it. I think i can kind of guess your answer how do you think the administration has been doing with the protests . I think it is, you know, beyond belief, and we have as you know, a fourmonth secretary of defense, secretary of defense speaking out and saying, this is the military, must not be used against civilian protesters. Former secretary of defense. Saying that. And you have a president who i think is consumed by his own political goals, by his own narcissism, who will do anything he can to further those personal goals at the expense of the American People. So not only is he not doing the right thing, not only has he not shown any empathy for this crisis, for the pain of the africanamerican community, but he has certainly exacerbated it, trying to divide us up in a way that i think we have never seen. You have a conservative president like george w. Bush making a statement the other day. Making that point. A conservative republican. But he is saying, we have to fight racism and bring people together this is from a conservative former president not donald trump jimmy say hypothetically the president called you up and asked you for advice, what would you say to him well, i dont talk to the president because anything i would say would be used as a photo opportunity, a manipulative statement it is clear as we head into this election, the American People have to come together. And while we have our difference of opinion, i dont agree with joe biden on everything, for the future of our kids and our grandchildren, for our planet in terms of climate change, donald trump has got to be defeated theres nothing that i can say to trump that will have much impact on him. Now, if you dont mind, can we talk about november, joe bidens campaign, i know youre supporting joe biden how closely are you working with him . Were close our campaigns are working together in a number of ways and as i said earlier, not everybody agrees with anybody else, but i would home the American People have to come together that we have to defeat donald trump in november in my opinion, the most dangerous president perhaps in the entire history of our country and ill do everything i can to make that happen. Where bidens campaign and our campaign are working together, a number of task forces, on the major issues facing the country, health care, immigration, education, climate change, and we brought great people. He has his people, we have our people to figure out how we can hammer out policies that both sides can live with. These task forces are meeting right now. Well see what the results will be certainly what my goal is, is to move this country to a biden presidency in a way that more strongly represents the views of working people who are really, really hurrying. Not just now in the middle of the pandemic but for many years. We have half our People Living pay they can do paycheck 40 Million People living in poverty. We can do better than that we need to rebuild not only our crumbling infrastructure we need 10 Million Units of Affordable Housing and low Income Housing we create jobs and i think joe biden understands this transforming our Energy System away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency, and Sustainable Energy in my view, biden and i have different views on this. I happen to believe that health care is a human right. All people should be entitled to it we have to take on the greed of the Drug Companies so there is a lot to be worked on i hope at the end of the day, well come up with an agenda to speak to the needs of working people, rather than just the big money interests who have so much wealth and power jimmy is there a Silver Lining in any of this . I think there is. I hope, and ill be very upset if we dome take advantage of the moment we donare going through so much pain, so much suffering, so much mental distressful so many did he do. 107,000 people dead already. The Silver Lining is we ha think about how we got here in the first place. Do we have the Health Care System that we need in the wealthiest country on earth . The answer is we dont do we have an economy that works for working families even before the pandemic no, we dont half of our people live paycheck to paycheck. They got nothing in the bank when those paychecks stop, you know what . You become desperate you cant pay your rental. You cant buy food is that the best we can do for an economy i dont think so so we have got to think big about how we got here, what kind of policies got us here, and have the courage to take on very powerful special interests, and in my view, move this country in a very, very different way if you like in my view, thats the Silver Lining of this moment use this opportunity to move this country in a very different direction than we have been in ill take it. Thank you so much, senator sanders. Please give my best to your wife mutual. Jimmy my thanks to senator sanders. More tonight show when we come back switch to progressive and you can save hundreds. You know, like the sign says. Family, running inthrough the yard family, all four seasons family, well bless your heart family, all in this together birds family, kick off your shoes and dance family, like birds of a feather family, kick off your shoes and dance for your worst sore throat pain, try Vicks Vapocool drops. Its not candy, its powerful relief. Ahhh vaporize sore throat pain with Vicks Vapocool drops and try new vapocool spray. Is all about protecting one thing the fun anywhere under the sun fun. Sidewalk fun longlasting fun poolside fun. Banana boat sunscreen lasts as long as the fun does. Maybe itll give us a new perspective. Maybe well see things weve been missing. Maybe itll help us see just how connected we all are. And maybe. Just maybe, if we look at the big picture. Itll remind us just how amazing freedom really is. We have rolled out teams across. Our network, and we went from essentially no televisits to approaching 5,000 visits a day. These visits are surprisingly intimate. I can actually share my screen and show the xrays. We really moved some mountains in our network, and teams has been a huge part of that. This is going to be a game changer for medicine. Jimmy today i had the honor of interviewing dr. Bernice a. King, daughter of dr. Martin luther king and Coretta Scott king she is doing a really cool thing called online protest basically for anyone who cant leave the house for these protests, for whatever reason, the pandemic, theres a way to protest peacefully online and it is very cool heres my conversation with dr. Bernice a. King. Thank you so much for doing this i appreciate it. Thank you jimmy coming from a family with such famous parents, your dad, Martin Luther king jr. , your mom, Coretta Scott king, its very big shoes to fill as far as an activist no kidding, yeah, wow very big i cant even walk in them. Jimmy yeah its been the life blood of my family. You know, ive kind of given my life to it i cant even imagine not being connected to whats happening at this moment. I dont know how anybody can imagine not being connected in some way in this moment. Jimmy what do you think your parents would think of this moment you know, i have to first say, my mom would be exhilarated. Because she was always committed and dedicated to the next generation thats one of the reasons she founded the king central where i serve as the ceo which is the official living memorial to the life, work and legacy of my father and you know, she would be so excited and really encouraging them to continue nonviolence, peaceful protests. Because it continues, it helps to keep things focused on the true narrative unfortunately, there have been those left and right extremes, weve infiltrated and tried to change the narrative but thank god, these nonviolent peaceful protests, these young people are saying no, this is what it is about keeping it on justice. Jimmy i saw you on social media and youre doing a great job with all that. One thing i found interesting, you were saying, you love that everyone is quoting your father. But its also interesting because he would hate it, obviously, at one point, you said he was one of the most hated men in the country yeah. I say it all the time. Ive been probably saying it two years when i go around speaking in this country and around the world. I say, my father was one of the most hated men in america and now hes one of the most loved mental in the world. So much so that people do take liberties to take different quotes to fit their situation. And nothing is more frustrating for me than that i say to people, if youre going to use his words, try to find the context of those words that he used them in. For example when he talked about riots being the language of the unheard, he was not justifying and saying that he everybody dorised riots. He was explaining where the riots are coming from. The other thing is, i have dreams that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character and people are always saying he was for a color blind america. And nothing could be further from the truthful he was basically explaining that no, there is a beauty in who i am as a black person, but i should not be judged by those standards and so it is not that you dont see my race. You see my race. You acknowledge my race and you accept everything i bring along with that. The beauty of the movement now finally. Black lives is the collection of who we are as america. Fighting and standing side by side with our Black Brothers and sisters to affirm their black lives matter, and my hope is that we move from protest to really solving problems, to really working on tearing down systemic racism and deconstructing things. We constructing on the foundation of love jimmy i think what you came up with is a really important thing. An online protest. Explain why you did this i think it is brilliant for anyone afraid to leave the house. Yeah. The people who were afraid to leave the house because of the pandemic, you know, those that have the comorbidity situations people who may be in communities that are far away from the epicenter where this is happening in different states across the nation. We wanted to invite them in to whats going on in our country this protest so we established an online protest at 7 00 p. M. Eastern standard time every night. You can find it at the king central facebook page, or king central youtube. Jimmy king center. Organize online protest well put it on the screen exactly we wanted everybody to come on and express themselves, more importantly, without all the noise of whats going on in social media and in traditional media. We wanted to be able to encourage people to move simultaneously as the protests of the movement, we want to move in terms of solutions and actions. So we are encouraging people we started with the arrests. Now we have that that has occurred thank god. Now were calling for people to raise their voices and begin to bombard the congress and the senate on the chokehold ban. So im just encouraged by what this protest is doing and the capability of what it can do it may be something we will continue at some point, this might be a long time with people in the streets. We have to continue to raise these issues, and keep people in that protesting mode jimmy keep the momentum. I would love to join i cannot wait to do that we would love to have you we want to continue to keep people aware and conscious and working toward the solution. And really, weve got to uproot White Supremacy and racism in our society once and for all were here now we cant go back jimmy no so im asking all my White Brothers and sisters, do the antiracism work it is essential. And it is nothing to be scared of it is nothing to be scared of. Jimmy thank you so much for coming on our show online protest. And im going to be involved whatever night, any way i can do it i really appreciate you taking the time i know how busy you are and im honored to have you on the show. Thank you i appreciate what youre doing jimmy thank you. Safe drivers save 40 safe drivers save 40 thats safe drivers save 40 . It is, thats safe drivers save 40 . Hes right there. Its him hes here. Jimmy earlier today i got to talk to comedian wyatt cenac about his show that is having a resurgence on youtube and other ways hes helping right now. Good to see you. Are you in quarantine . Youre in brooklyn im in brooklyn, yeah im in brooklyn very close to where all the demonstrations have been happening. Jimmy have you participated in any of these protests yeah. Its hard not to when it is right outside your door. You kind of you kinds of feel, yeah, any time you have an errand, youre basically, well, okay, ill spent a few hours here and then ill maybe go get that toilet paper i needed jimmy you were telling a story, was it your grandma yeah. Theres part of warming to get involved from my grandmother she would go into the city to go see a movie. I remember her calling me one day. I think she went to go see something, and yeah. She just supported any movie with black people in it. And she was the one old lady watching the movie at the Movie Theater in manhattan when she left, there were people protesting, marching and my grandmother was like, i should go see what this is about. And went and asked somebody. The next thing you know, she was like, i marched with them and i met two really nice people and i marched them back to my little apartment in crown heights, brooklyn, and i made them dinner and that feels like thats what the power of collective action is people coming together, not just their voices coming together it is communities being built. If my grandmother could walk out of that movie and join demonstrations, i have no excuse to do the same jimmy your show problem areas, was on hbo. I think it might have been the last time you were on our show promoting it and you would really take one issue and all the episodes would be about that issue. I think it was education education, the first season was policing jimmy the show is not on anymore. No. It was canceled. Jimmy and then you did something, i dont know, i think it is unprecedented, ive not seen it before you tweeted about it and you said, hey, im not saying it will do anything but what if hbo put them on youtube for free i just put it out there if they wanted to make it free on youtube, i would be cool with it and it picked up steam in a way on social media that i honestly did not expect a lot of people retweeted it and agreed with it and liked it and it got to a point where hbo then said, yeah, why dont we do this and they made it all available for free on youtube. Is there anything that you would like the highlight that a lot of people dont talk about yeah. There is a conversation that is starting to happen now where people talk about how Police Budgets are being used and just the idea that, why as citizens, taxpayers who pay into a police system, do we not have more oversight and control over how those dollars get spend. So much of the conversation we have, yes, we need to do things like change the way police are being trained, and do things like, there is a law on the books that hides, it makes Police Personnel records hidden from people. Jimmy what can people do to help with this do they look up every city where theyre from and say, hey, what is our policy . What is oursor does it cover ev . 50 a is in new york in new york there is something called a safer new york act which has laid out a few things, including 50 a we need to reach out to our local officials. A lot of is doing that. Receiving out to local officials. Amplifying voices. Jimmy do you feel like something positive is coming out from these protests . I hope so i think what feels different now, as opposed to even just a couple years ago is i feel like people are starting to look internal internally and say, okay, as a white person, what is my responsibility in this what is my role to play . Where have i been complicit in allowing these things to happen . So what i feel hopeful for, people arement onning into this movement, they continue to opt in and recognize that we are no good when we take ourselves off, especially with the wealthy can do it to the detriment of everybody else jimmy thank you for talking with me and having a great conversation and i hope to see you in person. I appreciate it. Thank you. Stay safe, okay . You too take care. Jimmy more tonight show when we come back yeah, im married. Does it matter . Youd do that for me . Really . Yeah, id like that. Who are you talking to . Uh, its jake from state farm. Sounds like a really good deal. Jake from state farm at 3 in the morning . Who is this . Its jake from state farm. What are you wearing, jake from state farm . Uh. Khakis. Hey, do they ever ask you what youre wearing . Uh. Yeah. Red sweater, button down shirt. Like a good neighbor, state farm is there.
