Downtown san jose and returning to city hall. This is the very spot where we saw some of the unpeaceful protests, launching rocks and bottles at Police Officers. And today, the chief said his officers did what they had to do that day, to prevent this city from falling into further chaos. Metal rebar. Glass bottles. Rocks. Chunks of asphalt. San jose police chief, read out a litany of items he said were thrown at his officers of friday and paid five minutes of silent videos showing what he calls a mob mentality by those who had no intention of protesting peacefully and introduced the captain in charge of the police response. When i was on the ground at seventh and santa clara, i stepped into an end zone, that is not hyperbole or embellishment. I have been a cop of 21 years and spent half that time in special operations and ive never seen anything like it. Jason dwyer called for tear gas and weather foam batons known to the ing about the at weather bullets and now as innocent protesters getting hit, city leaders are considering banning the use of those item by police, something that the chief will not support. We need those options. The alternative is hand to hand combat where batons might have to be used. All that said in an exclusive oneonone interview, the chief says the louder Community Message is loud and clear. Were hearing them and with them and want people to protest and we want peaceful protests and we are watching just as much as they do, and we just cant tolerate the violence. And there are hundreds of complaints against Police Officers, who are registered with the department. The chief says he will investigate every single one of them. He also points there is every Academy Class that teaches about the original sin, the slavery era, and how police were complicit in the slavery years, and he says thats a badge officers have to wear for the rest of their lives, and Police Officers need to understand they are seen in such a bad light with some in this community. Live at city hall, in san jose, im damian trujillo. Nbc bay area news. Thank you very much, gamian. Mau have gotten it on your phone, an alert that most of the bay area has lifted their curfews. There are only a few cities remaining with curfews tonight. Lets show you what they are. Vallejo, walnut creek. Fremont. Curfews are in effect. This however, will be the last night for fremonts curfew. Well, lets go back to sky ranger. Over fremont. The march that started at Washington High School is now on the move. Just started minutes ago. It appears they are headed to downtown and Fremont Police headquarters. Scott budman is live on the ground, and scott, what are you seeing from your Vantage Point . Well, hey, janelle, it was about three minutes ago, everyone was here, at washington high, they have since moved out on fremont boulevard, and they tell me theyre going to take fremont boulevard, all the way down, and as you can see, it is about 150 people strong, with the police escort, and theyre going all the way down toward Fremont Police station, and thats where they will meet. They gathered together, they made signs together, it was extremely peaceful. 100 all about peace and black lives matter and getting together. A pretty young crowd actually. And maybe the fact that they gathered at a high school is why, but a lot of young people, some of their parents came out tonight, and so far, as you can see, theyre slowly making their way down fremont boulevard. The end for them will be the Fremont Police department. We will send it back to you guys. Thanks so much, scott. Lets go back into the air and take another look from sky ranger, of this protest, and it looks like a few hundred youths and families and other people from the fremont community, starting again at Washington High School, they just started moving about five minutes ago, as they make their way to the Fremont Police department. One of many demonstrations going on in oakland. And a sitin at frank agawa plaza. Dozens of people sitting there on the lawn. This area has been the scene of daily demonstrations. And in south san francisco, people gathered at the police station, chanting and holding signs. Then they laid down, with their hands behind their backs, in memory of george floyd. Then protesters in san leandro shouted, say his name. But the person they were chanting about wasnt floyd. It was steven stay lore. About 150 people demonstrated in front the walmart on hesperia drive where 33yearold taylor was tased and shot and killed by police in april. Officers were responded to calls of taylor threatening people in the store with a baseball bat. At the protest today, t his mot says taylor had Mental Health issues and should not have been shot. My heart is overwhelmed. Im still in mourning. But im grateful. Im grateful that we can keep his name alive. The San Leandro City Council voted monday night to ask the state attorney general to investigate the shooting, coming up at 6 00, were going to hear more from the taylor family. Millions of people around the world tuned in today for the memorial of george floyd. Tears were shed but promises were made. Promises for immediate action. Lets go to raj mathai who watched today some powerful moments. Raj . Really powerful, janelle and jessica, so many people are involved. What really strikes me are the suburbs. I live here on the peninsula. Ive grown up here. And this is something we rarely see. We dont see protests in this neighborhood. But were seeing it just down the road from where i am right now. In fact, lets go to our nbc bay area sky ranger. We showed you the protest that is starting in los altos. Hundreds of people gathering at el ka camino, Civic Leaders and many people beginning the march down mountain view, the suburban community, mostly white, that can really help make all of this a turning point in america. Now, this hav, the memorial in minneapolis, broadcast live, on most of the Major Networks and cable channels, a lot of familiar faces. Reverend Jesse Jackson and minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar among many people and a host of entertainers including kevin hart but this day was all about floyds family and his legacy. Being here, we have a house full of love. And i appreciate the love of everyone in here. And in the state of minneapolis, yall have adopted my brother and showed him so much love and we feel that love. What happened to floyd happens every day in this country, and education and Health Services and in every area of american life, it is time for us to stand up, in georges name, and say get your knee off our neck. And this was not just about george floyd. This was about so many africanamericans over the years, among them breonna taylor, shot dead by louisville police. You a maud arbery recently shot dead jogging in a neighborhood in gentleman by a neighborhood. And the 2015 shooting of mario woods by sfpd officers and the new years day shooting in 2009, oscar grant, killed by a bafrt police officer. Among the many promises made today, a march on washington,d. C. On the same day when Martin Luther king jr. Did it back in 1963. But this time, its august 28, of this coming summer. In just a few minutes, were going to hear from two well known bay area leaders who are part of those marches, in dc. We will see you in just a minute. Thank you, raj. The death of george floyd has become such a cultural touchstone that californias school chief knows teachers have to be prepared to address it, too. We have to provide support to our six Million Students in the state, and we have to also have a conversation about what is our path forward. San franciscos Bechtel Corporation has donated half a million to help trade hundreds of educators on the subject of equity, bias and racism, Tony Thurmond says a plan to address boois was in the works but floyds death has made the issue more urgent. We are keeping the conversation going by donating a full hour to the racial divide in our country, i invite to you be here at 6 30 for an nbc news special race in america, the conversation, a deep dive with lots of people, to talk about whats happened, where we are, and where were going next. We look forward to that, jessica. Well, coming up, restrictions lifted across the bay area. We will break them down for you. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Tracking the cooling trend thats beginning right now. It may not feel like it, but i will tell you all about it in about eight minutes. Today dul for george flyod. About a new march. Bigger than all the marches we re seeing right now. There was an announcement made today during the memorial for george floyd about a march, bigger than any marches in the last few nights, lthis one linkd to history and many descending on washington, d. C. This summer, august 28th, the same day in 1963, the original march on washington, when Martin Luther king jr. Gave his famous speech, i have a dream. Today, we chatted with two prominent bay area residents, who were there, in washington, in the 60s. Well start with one of the early members of the black Panther Party that was founded here in oakland. I would give anything to be there. I went against my mothers wishes. By myself. And took two city buses. Because you know, i grew up in washington, d. C. In southeast so getting to northwest wasnt easy. I was 15. And i went, and it was there that i made a vow, it wasnt like it was in my head, a vow rose in my heart that i would serve people for the rest of my life. That was a pivotal moment. And i think this will be, this year, this year itself, is pivotal for a number of people, for a number of reasons, but that march will be a pivotal point. We went down to the lincoln memorial, and i remember ahead of time, for me, i had to go with my mom and dad, and watch that moment of people again protesting. So i think that we all, as you think about it, we all are trying, in our own respective ways, to play out our purpose in life, and ive always said that youve got to exhaust every moment. Im blad to see my kids are exhausting every moment. Im glad to see that the people in our community are exhausting every moment. So many reasons to be down and depressed with all of this. But when you hear from someone like Erica Huggins or ronnie lot, there is a lot of reason to be optimistic. Im certainly looking forward to these months to come and specifically that day in august, on that march in washington, d. C. Jessica and janelle, back to you. Okay, thanks so much, raj. Well, we must do more, also the message from apple ceo, tim cook, cook published and open letter on apples home page today. Its called speaking up on racism. And it addresses the death of george floyd, and Racial Injustice across the country. Here is portion of that letter. Cook says quote, to create change, we have to reexamine our own views and actions in light of the pain that is deeply felt but too often ignored, issues of Human Dignity will not abide standing on the sidelines. To the black community, we see you and you matter and your lives matter. After opening his pocketbook to the covid19 crisis, jack dorsey is pledging 3 million to the black lives Matter Movement to an Organization Called know your rights spearheaded by colin kaepernick. Theyre continuing right now, they have to help others. They can bring those out, and bring them to the schools that do not have computers today.
