We have seen a bulldozer going up the hillside trying to create a fire break so we expect that will help this morning, and we also know that vianey arana and the rest of our team have been watching the fire conditions because of the spike in heat and we did not get as much rain as we were hoping for during the rainy season. C vianey, you have a look at that . Yeah, anytime we see a spike in the heat we get drier conditions and the dry brush works as fuel. We will be quick to climb into the 80s and 90s. Good thing is the wind speeds are fairly calm in that area, between 4 and 6 miles per hour, and at times 10 miles per hour, and a little breezy and we are not expecting the winds to pick up until tomorrow afternoon. As far as the air quality goes, if you are sensitive and you have any conditions you may want to steer clear of that area and keep on that mask. At the bottom of our screen, i have circled a little area above the clock, thats where kris sanchez is showing the fire shes tracking in the silver creek area. Theres smooth traffic despite the fact you may see smoke. At the toll plaza, we do not have a backup. The gates are clear. We want to show you cities like San Francisco, oakland, san mateo and hayward where people continue to take to the streets. At one point an estimated 30,000 people had gathered in San Francisco and while many defied curfew orders pretty much everywhere, things remained peaceful. San francisco and san joses restrictions are not expected back tonight. Curfews in other areas including contra costa and Alameda County is expected to remain in place at least for now. Right now we want to get a look at what we can expect from the forecast today. Vianey arana is in for kari. Vianey, certainly a cool down for us and to start moving its way out of the bay area, and this will help improve our air quality as well. We have been moderate, but it will help it over the next couple of days. Beautiful view of San Francisco and low clouds lingering just ahead and for the most part, mild temperatures, and its going to be muggy because of the moisture, and you will notice that if you are up for an earlymorning jog, best time to do it because even though we will be slightly cooler today we will still be hot and above seasonal. For the daytime highs in san jose, 92 degrees, so nearing the triple digits but it will set us up for cooler weather ahead and i will break that down for you coming up in a few minutes, mike. Slowing as you approach the toll plaza, and that means closer to the lights theres a slowdown. Theres no metering lights yet, but i have seen the clues. Good morning and a very happy thursday to you. Thursdays, as you know, is when we get firsttime jobless claims and those numbers were not as good as we had hoped. More people filed for firsttime jobless claims unemployment than we had expected and fewer people came off the rolls than expected, which means hiring and rehiring is going slower than we anticipated. Despite the unease of the economy, the stock market is on an absolute tear. The nasdaq is 2 under its alltime high despite the pandemic and protest. And s p has had its biggest move in history. And look at the stock market now is what President Trump tweeted. As i said many times over the year, the stock market is not the economy and the economy is not the stock market. We measure things like unemployment, and we get the may jobs reports tomorrow, and durable goods, and price index, that sort of things, thats the economy. It appears as if the Chinese Government is backing down on this and things will be speaking of coronavirus, amc, the Movie Theater chain says theres substantial doubt it will remain open once its allowed to open. It has no revenue now, and the other thing that is happening, marcus and laura, not only are people going to be fairly reluctant to go to a Movie Theater once it is open, and then the movie studios are seeing that and saying we are going to hold our blockbusters even longer which means the movies you are going to see may not be that great, and then people will stay away from the theaters and you have a vicious circle and amc is in a world of hurt. Yeah, movie houses are pushing movies out on streaming services, but not generating the amount they would. Yeah, you need to buy the concessions. Adds up to a lot of money, all that popcorn. Its quarter after 6 00 now, and new this morning, twitter ceo jack dorsey, were talking about what a big tpphilanthropi he is giving money, and hes giving to kaepernicks know your camp. Trending this morning, some wellknown celebrities wading into the all lives matter debate, and the controversy as some people reply to the black lives matter post. Yeah, Ashton Kutcher gave an example, and when they put their children to bed, his daughter gets to go first and thats because a lot of women dont get to go first, and thats why black lives matter. For us, black lives matter, and so you may have the best intentions by saying all lives matter, but remember for some people black lives dont matter at all. Well said. Seth rogen fired back to all lives matter commenters saying, quote, you dont deserve my movies anymore. End quote. Hopefully that helps. Hopefully that conversation continues and it helps people to understand the perspective there. Yeah. Uplifting one doesnt mean you are not supporting somebody else. The Latino Community, seeing the Younger Generation like my sisters and cousins who are part of the Latin X Community speak to the older generations, and my older uncles and nieces and nephews, seeing the two generations coming together have that conversation is extremely happening and seeing that in the Latino Community is going to make a difference. I am ready for this to be pushed forward in the narrative with latinos as well. Completely. It has to be among all races and cultures. This is the time and now and carry us forward and hopefully carry us in the right direction. I am glad we are talking about it. We cant just allow changes to happen and we tried that and it has not so now we have to force these conversations to be had because they are so important to our every day lives, and thats the lives of everybody. Youre right. Were hoping the temperatures are in the 70s, vianey, and we know when you say cooling, its still in the 90s, right . Yeah, today we will see another day in the 90s but eventually we will get to the 70s. I juan pt to shwant to show you over san jose. Theres a brushfire burning in evergreen, so if you are part of the sensitive groups when it comes to sensitivity, and overall the air should improve as the High Pressure moves out of the area. High pressure tends to trap the hot air mass over the bay area. Oakland, 58. San francisco, 55. The 24hour temperature change is thanks to an onshore flow bringing more moisture to the area. Were still going to see another hot day, at least that heat advisory was allowed to expire last night. Look at the daytime highs, 88 in palo alto. 98 in concord. Still livermore comfortable around the coast. You have mother natures ac, of course. And the long range out look, we have two nearby systems that will bring a much better air mass and it will bring isolated rain chances into sunday and monday, and then looking out ahead to tuesday and wednesday we get High Pressure that is rolling backrohe 90s. Another note to mention as cool it will kick up the winds. Gusty at times, especially heading into sunday and into sunday night as well. Ill send it over to you. Vianey, i will take the cooler temperatures and breeze because i dont care for the 90s, and i am just putting that in there for my order. Well, looking at the roadways, and we are looking at a bigger built, slight, but its building. Smoke on highway 101, theres the hills in silver creek where theres a fire. 92 westbound where the arrow is across the san mateo bridge, theres reports of a disabled vehicle. We have a camera on the hayward side, and lets look out there and i dont see a major problem, but i see on the right side things are beginning to slow a slowing abit, and you could have the metering lights turned on in the next few minutes, but for now just the fast track lanes. Thank you, mike. This morning we are definitely keeping the conversation going. We have with us tyler gordon and his mom, and not only is he a great artist but he is taking a stance during this trying time, and also what moved tyler to make such a powerful statement at just 14 years old. Welcomek. Its 6 23 for you this morning. In the wake of George Floyds death, heartfelt tributes celebrating his legacy coming from everywhere, including a 14yearold. Dear george, you dont know me, but i know you. You were a father, you were a son, you were a brother and you were a nephew, and you are loved. What you are seeing there is my letter to mr. George. Joining us this morning to talk about his artwork is tyler gordon along with his nicole kendall. I want to thank you both for join tyler, i want to start b congratulating you on your global award. Tyler received the global award and only 100 kids in the world receive this award, so congratulations to you. Thank you. I saw your painting as well as your message as you called it my message to george. What made you do that, not only draw george floyd but give that message with it . I chose to give that message because he didnt deserve what happened to him so i wrote that message to say how i feel about it and how it was not okay. I think its touching sma people. Nicole, i know for a mother i have to explain to your child what is going on, and i dont know if you saw the video, but a lot of people are seeing what happened there, and how do you talk to your child about what is going on . Its difficult to have that conversation with your child, and tyler brought the video to me, he saw it over social media and he was just sitting on the bed saying, why are they doing this . What is wrong . At that moment i had to have the conversation with him and let him know that sometimes in the world stuff like this happens and theres no good reason why. I know you said you had the conversation, and i think that is one many black families have throughout the country, and had you all talked about race and injustice before now . No, we have not seen too much of it geared towards us, really. You know, as a mom, i try to shield my children from stuff like that, but with everything going on now there was no way i had to do it and have that conversation. Before we leave, what message do you give to many parents right now who are also dealing with this from all walks of life . How do you start that conversation with children . To start off, i just would tell them basically to be honest with your children, to let them know that there are real problems going on in the world and just to keep them involved and informed, and thats the only way we can get through this. All right, nicole kendall, as well as tyler, and you know i am a big fan of yours so keep inspiring the world with your work. Thank you, i will. Look, we want to continue this conversation. We are going to continue it right here on nbc bay area tonight at 6 30. Its called race in america the conversation, and we are devoting an entire hour to exploring the racial divide in the country, and the conversations being had in households and why that conversation has to continue in order to create and start change. Jessica aguirre awell as myself are leading this conversation, and we want you to be part of it as well. Mack su make sure you tune in tonight at 6 30. And then next, the stories we are following today. Large crowds coming together and their message last night and new rallies planned for today. I am kris sanchez in san joses evergreen neighborhood where the smoke is starting to die down, but look at the overnight pictures. A look at what could be a difficult fire season. Right now at 6 30, breaking news. A brushfire burning right now in the south bay. We have new video from overnight. It certainly has grown in size. Good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us. I am laura garcia. I am marcus washington. Lets get straight to kris sanchez in southeast san jose with the latest for us. Kris . Reporter hi, there. The most worry some thing about this fire at this point is it points to what could be happening as temperatures continue to rise. This is a neighborhood off Silver Creek Valley road and san felipe road. A bulldozer went up this way and firefighters tell us the fire is at least 20 acres at this point but has the potential to grow to about 100 acres. The good news here is its far enough away from neighborhoods there are no structures or homes or buildings threatened at this point, but because we saw the spike in temperature and we know summer is coming theres concern over fire danger, especially since we did not get the kind of rain we were supposed to get during the rainy season. We will stay out here live in san jose, and it looks like its largely under control. Theres no smoke so thats a good sign from here. Kris sanchez for today in the bay. Thanks, kris. 6 32 for you this morning, and we want to give you a look at the forecast, and vianey arana has been showing us what we can expect today. Vianey, the temperatures are going to be a little cooler today . Yeah. Hey, there, marcus. Right now were in the 60s so were waking up to pretty warm temperatures, and its even a little muggy outside. I want to start out with a look at the temperature in evergreen, because thats an area where the brushfire is, and three factors we look into are the humidity, the temperatures and the wind speeds. Thankfully the wind speeds are very calm right now ask we are not expecting to see an increase in the winds at least not until tomorrow evening with the arrival of a new system, and temperatures will be in the 90s so we will still be dry, and i will talk about the changes and what we are expecting over the weekend coming up in a few minutes. As the sun comes up outside my window, its getting muggy inside as well. And then the roadways are stagnant at the bay bridge toll plaza, and the metering lights were turned on at 6 25. Fast track lanes are moving and the cash lanes are stopped up. As we look at your map and circle the aproproach to the to plaza, and thats not a major problem. Theres a crash on highway 37 out of vallejo, and at the bottom of the screen i circled where we are looking at the fire kris sanchez is tracking. The freeways are moving well. D this video going viral showing San Jose Police officers chasing down a protester and hitting him seemingly with a motorcycle. It already has 100,000 views. Hat video is showing officers protesters. It has generated a lot of controversy. San jose police along with the mayor are planning to speak about the protests today at 1 00 p. M. Another day of protests planned for today after large crowds gathered in San Francisco and oakland. In some cases well past curfew. Today in the bays bob redell joins us from fremont where another protest is planned for today. Reporter yeah, the Fremont Police Department Headquarters behind me, and they have no credible information that Retail Businesses here will be targeted or looted. This was the view from nbc bay area sky ranger over downtown San Francisco where you can see thousands of people were in the streets marching through the mission and castro districts of the city. This was the scene later in the evening in oakland by broadway and 14th, where hundreds gathered and peacefully protested on behalf of george floyd and other People Killed in police custody. Opd allowed the protesters to break curfew as long as they were ordinarily and nonviolent. The city praised the protesters saying they were overwhelmingly peaceful. I feel like breathing for taylor or george floyd, and still using my body for this is important regardless of the consequences. We have a right to be here to speak, so we have to do that and we should be here. I want to direct your attention to this. This is in front of city hall t turned into a sort of dance party, and you can see there a number of people are doing the electric slide. Maybe nice temperatures if somebody wanted to go camping, but maybe they should stay home because its not going to be too bad here in the bay area. Its not. We will get a cooldown, but if you enjoy camping, it could be cool for that. If you want to get away and get fresh air at sequoia, one of my Favorite Places as a kid. If you want to get out do it early, between now and 10 00 a. M. Look at the trend, in the 60s now and then by 11 00 in the upper 80s, and you dont want to be out and about in the hottest part of the day which is between 2 00 and 3 00. Vianey, the focus is the san mateo bridge for me, and the right side of your screen is heading away from us to the peninsula side. And then i am starting to see slowing as far but the map sensors shows a better speed than it did about tpaoeu minufi ago. The rest of the bay is a nice and smooth drive. We have the build continuing at the bay bridge and i will show you that coming up. Still ahead on today in the bay, the latest on the new charges filed against Police Officers involved in George Floyds death. And the Public Memorials planned for him today. Plus, touching moments of unity. The messages and other signs of hope showing up across the bay area amid the rising tensions. 6 40 right now. You are watching today in the bay. Z3wvnz z1s6z y3wvny y1s6y and good thursday morning. Beautiful start over San Francisco but even though were tracking cooling, we are still going to have to get through today, another hot day in the 90s for inland areas. How much of a cooldown are we expecting this weekend . I will have that answer coming up. Mike . A live look at the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights were turned on at 6 25, and they are moving more smoothly than the last time we took a look. Thank you, mike. Its 6 43. Back to our continuing coverage after days of protests in minneapolis when the handcuffed george floyd died at the hands of the police. Thousands will gather to remember floyds memory at the first of several Public Memorials. Jay gray joins us from the campus of North Central university in minneapolis where no doubt thousands will gather there today. Good the memorial will take place, the Worship Center just behind us and thats where Lloyds Family and friends will be inside, and then the huge park here is where thousands are expected to gather and listen to a broadcast of the memorial there. This all coming after three more minneapolis Police Officers were arrested in floyds death. Across the country overnight, thousands of protesters spilling into the streets like they have ever night since George Floyds death. Reresponding to the calls for justice. Were here today because george floyd is not here. Minnesotas attorney general announces charges against three more Police Officers, two who helped pin floyd down. The state also upping the charge against chauvin, the officer with his knee on floyds neck. The charges celebrated at the scene of floyds death. But they point out, this is not the end of the fight. I wont be satisfied until i wake up and can have kids and not have them fear their life just for being black and being darker than other people. Its not enough. I can say its not enough. Its not enough until everything changes. Changes family members are calling for as they join supporters for a memorial later today. My father should not have been killed like this. Just under 2 million americans filed firsttime jobless claims and its higher than forecast but the lowest since the pandemic took hold. This is the ninth straight week of decline as many businesses reopen, however there were also 21 million more continuing claims. The may jobs report is out tomorrow with Unemployment Rate expected to rise to 19 . 6 47 right now. President trump is facing trouble from not one but two defense secretaries this morning. Thats right, scott, the old and the new. Thats right. Good morning. The old one being jim mattis and the new one being mark esper. Esper says he disagrees with the president desire to use the insurrection act, and many people disagree with that idea. But for the sitting secretary of defense to publicly disagree with the president is extremely unusual. The option to use active duty forces in a Law Enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the urgent and dire of situations, and we are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the insurrection act. Asked whether the president would fire esper for disagreeing with him publicly the White House Press secretary said for now secretary esper is still secretary esper. Esper was asked at the same News Conference about his presence at the president s controversial walk over to st. Johns church across the white house. As you know protesters were cleared from Lafayette Park to make that walk possible. Esper said he was under the impression the president and he were going to the park to inspect a damaged public park restroom. Mattis was trumps first secretary and he says, trump is the first president in my life that divides. President trump responded on twitter saying that he had given mad dog mattis his nickname and he fired mattis, and neither is true, and mattis resigned after trump wanted to pull troops out of syria and mattis disagreed. And then rosenstein said if he knew then how poorly justified the fbis request to Wiretap Trump Campaign aide carter page was he would not have allowed it. That is significant because the investigation into page led to the broader investigation into trump. If you knew then what you know now would you have signed the warrant application . No, i would not. I said there were two defense secretaries now, and just moments ago the secretary of the army is tweeting about the troops in the streets. I will link you to that on twitter, and you can find me on twitter scottmcgrew. And then a speech get atlan ellen this afternoon. Like many cities hers is dealing with much of the damage deal to protests and she said its gotten out of hand. When you burn down this city, youre burning down our community. If you want change in america, go and register to vote. Show up at the polls. She said she did not have any idea that her speech would get so much attention. I had to come home and watch it again that night because it was just so much emotion, and i had not planned on saying any of that. You can hear her mission, she shares her thoughts on President Trumps handling of the protests as well, and thats all ahead on ellen at 4 00 p. M. Right here on nbc bay area. 6 51 for you right now. A live look outside at San Francisco. Nice and foggy there. We know that actually keeps it a little cooler. Vianey arana, i will let her handle the forecast, but i have learned a little bit by watching you all. Yeah, thats right, you are right on the money. Its sort of a blanket at times and then the sun comes up and then the temperatures heat up. San jose, beautiful clear skies. We will be seeing slightly cooler temperatures and the reason i say slightly is because we are still going to be hot today, definitely above average. Look at this amazing view over mount tam. This is a shot thanks to the pg e cameras. Cupertino, you can see how gorgeous this looks. Lets get right to the current temperatures in the bay area. 62 in san jose. 58 in livermore. 61 in concord. 58 in oakland. 55 in San Francisco. Your microclimate highs for this afternoon, here it is, remember when i said slight cooldown, well, we saw triple digits that had the heat advisory in place, that expired last night but still in the upper 90s for places like concord, antioch and livermore. Upper 70s for santa cruz. Your air quality for today is going to be relatively good but keep in mind theres the fire still burning in the south bay near the evergreen area, so if you see smoke be aware of that and mindful. We have two systems, one will be a colder air mass that will drop the temperatures into the 70s, and then by sunday into monday we get a chance of seeing isolated showers, but also the winds is going to kick up. In addition to the 70s, we will have windy conditions and look at that, 96 down to 75 by sunday and then back up into the 90s by wednesday. Mike . Yeah, vianey, we also still have fire activity in the north bay, and so watch that just off of highway 12. No freeway impacts. As we look at the map, we have the fire activity that vianey was talking about with kris sanchez and i circled that at the bottom. The freeways are moving nicely except for two bridges which are important, the san mateo bridge, the arrow shows you the incline and the highrise, and a disabled vehicle still being addressed there from what i understand from chp. The live camera on the hayward side, and i have seen what looks like slowing about midway across, folks slow a little toward the incline and cant make out what is going on on the incline itself, but i see the car images moving. Meanwhile the bay bridge toll plaza had the metering lights turned on at 6 25 this morning, and theres a build coming off of the maze, and thursday we should see a similar flow, about another 45 minutes of backup and then things should start to lighten up towards San Francisco. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Happening today, las vegas resorts are opening today. On the casino floor only three seats per table and masks are required at those tables. No word yet on the containment or even a cause. Warriors coach steve kerr is talking about the death of george floyd this week, of protests and how to bring about change. Thats right. He touched on a lot of topics this week during his latest flying coach podcast he has with pete carroll. Among the topics he talked about, he said that theres a special need within the White Community to first know the legacy of racial inequality before any change can come to pass. The thing i think that has to be done before anything is an understanding and an awareness that there needs to be a reconciliation, an admission of guilt.
