We in the house tonight, senator Kamala Harris talib kweli. Roy wood, jr and the legendary rootcrew its the tonight show at home edition. And now, heres jimmy. Jimmy welcome, everybody thank you so much for watching were going to get to everything thats going on in the country right now. Last night, there was a lot of peaceful protests around the country. More peaceful than other nights. So thats a step in the right direction. Also today, all four Police Officers were charged in the murder of george floyd so heres hoping for some justice for that family. And theres many more families that deserve justice, as well. But again, these are all steps in the right direction but guests tonight are senator Kamala Harris. We also have talib kweli, who is a rapper and activist, and we get to catch up. Weve known each other for a long time. And we also get to hear from comedian roy wood, jr. Its going to be a fun show. Lets get some news here, you guys after nine days of protests, a new poll found that pretty much everyone thinks President Trump is not doing a good job. Check it out right now, based on the data we have, the public is not with this president his Approval Rating continues to be terrible, 54 disapproval yeah, not good. Even worse for trump, that poll was taken among his kids right now, trump seems to be polling somewhere between jake paul and that time i decided to grow a mustache for the summer you liked it i did i was the one. Jimmy my heavens theres got to be someone else no, probably not when trump saw his numbers, he started crying and then he was like, im not crying, its the tear gas for my church photo shoot blowing back in my face. Everyone seems to be turning on him. Fox and friends is now just fox and friend you know, at this point, trump should just go for 100 disapproval and take credit for uniting the country. Trumps thinking can turn this around tomorrow hes going to walk to the vatican, hold up a bible and be like, okay, pope francis. How does trump not know how to hold a book . Ive never seen anyone hold this is have you ever seen anyone hold anything like that its like a broken g. I. Joe hand or something ive never its like hes plucking the bible from the bible tree ive never seen anybody have you ever honey, have you read this anyone want to read this put your hand down now on the cup. Meanwhile, former president george bush released a statement that some people think is a shot at trump he wrote, those who set out to silence those voices dont understand the meaning of america or how it becomes a better place you know its serious if they got george w. Bush to write words. Even Pat Robertson called out donald trump for his response to the protest. This is amazing. Watch this he said, im ready to send in military troops if the nations governors dont act to quell the violence he spoke of them as being jerks. You just dont do that, mr. President. It isnt cool. Yeah, he was like, this isnt cool prods out. Microphone drop. You know we live in crazy times when were agreeing with the guy that said gay people cause hurricanes theres more of the country turning on trump, republican senators have very little to say. What the did did last night, was it the right thing is what the president did right . Senator, are you concerned about what happened a white house last night he was asked the same question after coming back from lunch. Last week, trump was rushed to the white house bunker because of the protest earlier today, trump said the report was false take a listen. Well, it was a false report i wasnt there i went down during the day, and i was there for a tiny little short period of time it was much more for an inspection yeah, its like running into a friend at the cvs buying hemorrhoid scream. Im not buying, what is this hemorrhoid cream im just inspecting. Im a hemorrhoid cream inspector. Whats the big deal . And finally, after a rough few days, heres something to bring us up. So were going to start manufacturing doses of the vaccines and heres something to bring us back down but if it acts like other common virus common coronaviruses, its likely not going to be a very Long Duration of immunity. Yeah. Senator Kamala Harris is a senator from the great state of california i got to talk to her today here is my chat with senator Kamala Harris. Senator harris, thank you so much for being on the tonight show and coming back to us. I know these are difficult times and youre very busy right now soy really appreciate this thank you so much for this good to be with you, jimmy. I would like to get right to the breaking news today. Three other officers involved with the death of george floyd have now been charged. What are your thoughts as of today, were one step closer to justice. You know, i have long believed, and i think we all know justice delayed is justice denied. And why it had to take so long for those other three officers to be held accountable has, you know, caused pain for mr. Floyds family and the community and all of us that watched that video and are watching whats happening. But thankfully, keith ellison, the attorney general, has taken over the case and is obviously not wasting any time in making sure that justice is delivered to mr. Floyds family and to that community and to our country. What are your thoughts in the Administration Currently and how theyve been dealing with this on top of the pandemic i mean, jimmy, weve got a president of the United States, or at least somebody who occupies that position, who doesnt understand the job, and isnt capable of performing the job. Most recently, you know, frankly the words that he speaks are the words not of a president , theyre the words of a dictator. I was in d. C. That night you know, i joined the protesters in d. C. Jimmy i saw that so ive been out there. And i will tell you, had my parents not marched and shouted in the 60s, i would not have been as together with all those who did. Im pretty certain i would not be talking to you as only the second black woman ever elected to the United States senate. There are so many things that we as a society have benefited from because people took to the streets to exercise their First Amendment right, to speak out and speak to their government so that we can see progress and the idea that just a couple of nights ago, this guy, donald trump, who happens to right now be president of the United States, would throw tear gas at people who are peacefully protesting so he could clear the road it reminds me of the emperor with no clothes, so he could clear the road to walk, to carry the bible, the holy bible. You know, as though it were one of his stakes, one of his trump stakes, for a photoop and that night, because i was at my apartment in d. C. , i heard the blackhawks flying. You know, the last time i was on a black hawk when i was in afghanistan. These are military aircraft that are being turned on the people of america hes talking about turning the u. S. Military on its own people. I serve on the Senate Intelligence committee and the Homeland Security committee. This is not the america that people fought for. And this is not the america that is the america of our ideals this is something all together and thats why people are marching and shouting. And the optimism that i have is the optimism that all of us have when we are in these kinds of fights, which is its not a fight against something, its a fight for something. But you know, donald trump doesnt get it, and thats why everyones got to make sure that we vote in november and show ourselves and the world that we are better than this jimmy speaking of november, ive seen you at numerous interviews saying that its going to be a very important time in our history. Yes, it will be jimmy what are we looking at here in november coming up okay. So first of all, theres so much at stake in the election i mean, so, again, were in the midst of a Public Health were in a pandemic. We have had over 100,000 souls, in just less than 100 days, perish, die. Millions of people have contracted this virus and are suffering in its grip. We have over 40 Million People who were working, who are now unemployed just in the last 100 days because of this pan and one of the things that one, i will again say that we would not be in as bad of a situation as we are had the president not taken immediate action, had the president not called it a hoax and minimized the seriousness of it. And we are where we are. So in terms of the election, one of the things we have to make sure is that people can go and vote and be safe so i have a proposal i call it the vote safe act. That basically is that states all states should have vote by mail all states should have early voting, at least 20 days before election day, so you can figure out what works for you, and all states for people who go to the polls, have safe precautions, things like curbside voting and unlike in wisconsin, people stood in line for two to three hours, people would only have to stand in line for a certain amount of minutes. So in terms of this b. S. About fraud, listen, donald trump spoke the quiet words out loud when he said that he was concerned that he and the Republican Party would lose if people vote by mail. Meanwhile, he himself, and i believe family members of his, have voted by mail consistently. So the whole thing about fraud and the vote by mail system is really a red herring to distract people from the seriousness of this moment, which is were in the middle of a pandemic we want people to be able to be safe when we vote, and we definitely want to make sure that people dont have to make a choice between their health and their right to exercise their voice, especially at this moment in time in our country jimmy more with senator harris when we come back stick around like verizons 4g lte network. Jimmy heres more of my conversation with senator Kamala Harris is there anything that you can give our viewers, maybe a message of hope or any words of wisdom to anyone that is watching tonight, wahing you know, so recently ive been meeting by zoom with young leaders, and im talking about 8 and 12yearolds theres a little girl who i met with and she is literally doing the work, shes got a whole outreach system that she has for Elementary Students and middle School Students to talk with them about their experiences during the pandemic. So she calls it covid19 for kids her name is alisa jennings and shes doing extraordinary. He talks about because she also has a Health Condition that shes grown up with. So shes talking about to these other kids about how to get through this when theyre at home and cant be with their friends and doing everything online there was a young hes 7 years old, Cavanaugh Bell is his name gathering food and getting donations to feed seniors. Jimmy wow. I mean, these incredible kids who know what i have long believed, which is were all born as leaders. Its just a matter of when you turn that on and these kids inspire me like you cant believe. So there are a lot of good stories. Jimmy you get that energy from your parents or the thought of hey, i have to fight for whats right and ive got to get out there . When were you out there protesting i was in a stroller so i was out there and in fact, my mother used to tell me a very funny story about how i was fussing and she said, kamala, what do you want and i said, this is how she would say it, kamala, what do you want and i said it was a much cuter story when she would tell it jimmy thats when you get instilled, to make certain choices when you, you know, starting at joining as stroller age . Yeah. You know, heres the thing, jimmy, i was also raised, and this is what i strongly believe. You know, theres a big difference between charity and duty, okay charity is, oh, i got a little to give, look how great i am, im just going to give, im charitable and then theres duty, which is really somewhat i believe, which is that we each have a duty to each other its not charity, its not as if i have some extra ill give you some it is literally each of our responsibility, whether we feel like it or not whether we have the extra time or not, to participate and to see what we can do to lift up the conditions of others you know, the real measure of the strength of the human being is not like donald trump, based on who you can beat down the real measure of strength of each of us is based on who you can lift up. Like the kind of muscles that you can see youve got when you help somebody out and you say wow, ive got that kind of power in me to actually help someone else and make a difference in their life thats the measure of strength and so thats how i see it senator Kamala Harris, thank you so much for doing this and taking the time and coming on our show i would love to see you again next time in person, hopefully yes you be well and safe jimmy my thanks to senator Kamala Harris. Heres the great talib kweli so good to see you thank you so much for being on my show. I know this is kind of a difficult, painful time right now in our country yeah, yeah. Jimmy i just would like to talk to a familiar face and a familiar voice thank you for having me its my honor and pleasure to be part of this good to see you, too jimmy i know i miss you i always get excited when you see you. Do you remember when we first met . I do. The first time we met was in the airport at amsterdam with Justin Timberlake and cameron diaz. Jimmy the disco taxi, thats right. And we went to africa together we were kind of forced to be friends. We were roommates for the whole time right i learned a lot about white People Living with you, jimmy, in a tent. Jimmy oh, no, can you say it on the show . I learned that white people, and im generalizing here, but i learned that white people play a lot of poker and drink a lot of whisky at least the white people i was around jimmy i think i did a lot of that, yeah, yeah i want to get into this, i really respect your opinion on everything why is this time feel different or does it this is interesting reparations for africanamericans is sort of a polarizing issue but during the civil war, there was a general, tecumseh, he did special orders number 15 and said if you fight with the union or support the union, you get slaves get 40 acres and a mule now, spike lee named his film company after 40 acres and a mule Andrew Johnson reversed that but it was one of those moments in history where they needed black people so much and they needed black people to participate in the country so much, but they were making promises with 40 acres and a mule now we have a situation where young marginalized people have been trapped in the house because of the covid lockdown. People havent been able to celebrate birthdays with their friends. People havent been able to graduate with their friends. Then you have the perfect storm of george floyd being murdered by police or white supremists who think they are police. So you have this energy of people trapped inside the house and they need to release so we have this perfect storm of the last time we saw a Police Precinct burned down was in 1968 when dr. King was murdered now, six days of rioting, they past the Civil Rights Act after that dr. King said a riot is the language of the unheard. When voices are unheard, they rise up in the streets now that the violence is starting to dissipate a little bit, you have to look at what the policies and changes that come out of this what can we vote into being . What can activists contribute to the situation . I think were talking about police reconstruction, defunding the police, the police have received 220 more funds in the last 30 years. You know, talking about reparations. Now is the time, because i think the country is in a place to hear us now. Youve been very outspoken about racism and police brutality. I was wondering if you wouldnt mind maybe telling me one of your earliest memories of racism wow you know, i grew up in brooklyn. I remember being called the n word by a little italian kid that was on my soccer team he was a cool kid on the team. His name was nick, and we had a race i was like, if i beat him in the race, i would be one of the cool kids so we raced. As soon as we finished the race, i beat him he said, of course you won, youre a [ bleep ] thats the first time i heard the word, but the feeling of feeling cool and feeling like a winner and feeling like i was one of the cool kids immediately was deflated with one word and i didnt respond to that situation, because i was like 7, 8 years old. I didnt know how to quite respond. But it stayed with me, and i vowed that i would never let a white person call me that word without consequence. This is stuff ive never spoke on the a therapist or my parents about. But black people, weve inter l internalized this trauma and normalization of racism that, when it bubbles up to the surface, people are like, how are you dealing with this . So sorry like yo, ive been black my whole life this is nothing new. Yeah. Do you think its magnified because people feel safer that theyre anonymous that theyre behind their keyboards and they dont have to be up front . A lot of people are critical of my amount of my twitter engagement so i consider myself a pro black person that means i combat bigoted ideals i dont go for individuals if you Say Something thats hateful and it comes across my radar, i was taught i cant ignore it. Some people have to for selfcare. But my selfcare is always speaking out has that spilled over on to your kids . Man, my kids are wonderful. I love them so much. When Trayvon Martin was murdered by george zimmerman, i went to have a meeting with a bunch of people that would amplify peoples voices. Harry bellefonte put me in touch with people trying to change the stand your dwroumd lground laws. When trayvon was murdered, my son was 17 years old so i took him down there and that was our first activism together now ive been stuck in california, i follow my daughter on instagram im following her and shes out there protesting with the streets in brooklyn. So it hits close to home i see my daughter out there with these people and i get scared. Im like, youre out there, theres a pandemic going on, you could get hurt or killed anything could happen. But then im like, im proud of her at the same time shes my daughter. Shes doing exactly what i would have been doing at that age. So ive got to let it be shes the new me ive got to let her have that. Jimmy sit tough watching the news particularly for black people, theres two sort of trains of thought. One is we shouldnt be retweeting and showing traumatic black images like how white people used to lyn lynch black people and have these parties and watch black death. But without us seeing that cop, chauvin i think it is, kneeling on george floyd, he would not be arrested some people cant deal with it, i get that but us seeing it moves the dial forward. Jimmy its a tough job for the journalists and reporters on the field, as well yeah. I mean, were in an era look, donald trump is trying to be a dictator he might not think hes a fascist, but hes moving in fascist ways when he talks about when the looting starts, the shootings someone for taking your peally a cop paid by tax dollars to protect the people so when he says that black people who are rioting are thugs and he says the press is the enemy of the people, they feel empowered to shoot thugs they feel empowered to shoot at the press because the press is the enemy of the people. I watched a black cnn dude get arrested on live tv. This is insane when the police are targeting the press, we dont have a republic or a democracy, we have fascism. We have a dictatorship jimmy is there hope . Theres got to be im an artist. Im an optimist by nature. But you have to follow the lead of the people who are doing the work dont engage in eraser of the people who are talking about this when the cameras are not focused on george floyd or ahmad arbe arbery, there are organizations on the ground doing the work theres the move for black lives, the website is m4bo. Org in minneapolis, theres black visions. Theres weclaimtheblock. Org in minneapolis. A shoutout to sheila from black lives matter, which have laid out a 27page black agenda that i agree with completely. I think the things that are in that black agenda are good for the whole country. The black agenda is not something that just helps black people the black agenda is something that helps the marginalized, the poor, the people who are the fuel to the fire that creates america. Jimmy i always love having you on, man. I appreciate you taking the time talking to me and, again, as i said right before we started, i missed your voice. Do you have anything new coming out . I know were not here to plug anything right diamond d that im working on. But in the spirit of what were talking about, a lot of people have been saying we need that black star album were in the final stages of it. Its produced by mad libs, but the new black star album is dealing with a lot of this subject matter im working hard, trust me when i tell you, im working hard to get it out to the people jimmy i love you, man. Cant wait to see you. No doubt. Jimmy stay safe. Bye, buddy thank you. My thinks to talib kweli more tonight show when we come back come on back, everybody. This is definitely a sea change. Jimmy hey, everybody i got a chance to talk to the very funny roy wood, jr. , who has been on our show a fwunbuncf times. Right now hes quarantining in birmingh birmingham, alabama. Heres my chat with him. Thank you for joining me where is you quarantined right now, are you in new york no. We stayed as long as we could, and then a couple of weeks ago made the drive down south. Myself, my girl, our 4yearold. And drove 16 hours to alabama. So thats where we are good old birmingham. Jimmy can you talk to me what the past week has been like for you in birmingham, alabama so birmingham, i dont think its that different from a lot of whats going on in other places we did have something interesting, you know, that gave me a sense of community of what alabama is and so we had a protest, a peaceful protest at a park downtown and so this is where birmingham to me is just such a different place to be from ask that you talk about justice, this place is rich for people willing to fight for it so everybody went to the park for the peaceful protest so a good friend of mine said to the crowd, while were down here, why dont we try to that monument over there the crowd was like, all right, yeah lets go do that so people were trying this is how birmingham is. Somebody in downtown birmingham pulled up a pickup truck with a rope to pull down a million ton Confederate Monument with a pickup truck it didnt work jimmy i was going to say, did it work . No. But the mayor Randall Wilson came out he spoke with the crowd and he said, give me two days to get this done and the mayor got it done in one and the Confederate Monument is down and that came as a result of people coming together you know, there was a lot of stuff that happened after that in the streets of birmingham, no different than anywhere else and all of that stuff happened without the mayor or Jermaine Johnson telling people to go do that people were going to tear up stuff on their own, and thats what happened. But the thing i want to get to is that the next morning, in that same civil rights district, theres a black woman on t optometrist, dr. Adams he place got hit and we showed up and started cleaning. During that time, just shoveling glass. The entire city came together. Black, white, young, old, people brought food, people brought music and bordard a homeless pee up and donated their time to see that sense of community, that was done. Jimmy amazing. I really hope, you know, that we dont lose sight of that. And so to bring that all back together, so then we this is how together the city of birmingham is, jimmy so we have a peaceful rally for george floyd, we tried to get down a monument. The mayor said give me a minute, ill get a crane and take down the monument then the city cleans up. Then the state is going to fine birmingham 25,000 for taking down the monument. A wonderful woman started a go fund me and raised the money for the fine thats the city of birmingham. Jimmy well done. Oh, my goodness. Can you imagine, within 24 hours that all went down i just think its just a wonderful show of niche tiinitie happening here in the city ive never been more proud jimmy thats a beautiful thing. Right now i think we can both agree that we need leadership in this country what would you want the president to say, if you can have him say anything . I resign. That would be a start. Because its not about saying anything anymore, its about doing something. Thats why i rahate the rhetori thats going on, protesting versus looting you shouldnt violent protest. Why is that a topic of discussion if you put a pot on the stove and the pot boiled over, the first thing you do is pull the pot over the stove when you look at racism in this country, thats a kettle pot thats been sealed shut and put on the stove for centuries and every time the kettle spot starts boiling, the conversation is about why is the steam coming out . Take the pot off the stove and thats the only conversation that needs to be had i think thats the conversation that gets lost in the midst of everything that happens, you know, at night in america. But at the end of the day, regardless of whats happening at night, theres a lot of tragedies happening at night that are sad and terrible. But if you want those things to stop, ultimately if you want those things to stop, take the pot off the stove. Then you wouldnt have people outside during the day blocking the freeway, keeping you from going where you want to go i want to go shop. Do you think i want to be in a curfew i went out to the store last night. Walmart closed at 5 00 do you think i want to live in a world with Stores Closing at 5 00 do you think i want to be outside shoveling glass in 94 degree humidity . I dont, but i will. Just take the pot off the stove. Thats all you got to do roy wood, jr. , thank you for talking to me. I hope to see you again in person, my friend. Absolutely. Jimmy hug your family for me, pal. Thank you very much. Absolutely. Jimmy all right, bud well be right back with more tonight show, everybody. Ps lor the chances of getting hiv through sex. Its not for everyone.
