Here is a good side effect of the less cars on the roadway. On a hot day like this, normally the air is quite a bit more polluted. But you can see from our camera towards San Francisco, lots of blue sky. One gym owner said its been stressful just waiting for this phase three. The governor says the guidelines to reopen gyms and Fitness Centers are coming in the next week or so. We dont want to be naive and just put out thats bland and that doesnt meet your unique criteria and your unique considerations. Some gym instructors have been able to switch to virtual workouts with some of their clients. Its a question parents teachers, and students have been asking, when schools reopen, what will it look like . Thurman says kids temperature also be taken at school as well as class size also be smaller to ensure social distancing. He introduced a proposed hybrid model that involves some students in class, while others are at home doing Distance Learning. And so we expect that there will be a balance of instruction between Distance Learning and inclass instruction. And we think that that balance is going to be helpful to many in our state. The more Distance Learning were doing, that means we can have fewer students on campus and smaller class sizes. Thurman called on companies to step up and bridge the Digital Divide so that more students can have access to laptops and hot spots in their homes. He plans to release more guidance on reopening more schools next week. Up next at 6 30, a grime milestone, the u. S. Passing the 100,000 mark for deaths from coronavirus. As new yorks governor heads to the white house. Also, b. A. R. T. Is making major changes but is it enough to get riders back on those trains . Right now at 6 30, the u. S. Passes a somber milestone in the coronavirus pandemic. 100,000 deaths. Experts say the real number is almost certainly higher. No place is immune from covid19. The virus has now killed at least one person in every u. S. State and territory. New jersey, massachusetts, and of course, new york have seen the most deaths. New yorks governor today visited the white house to, again, ask for federal funding to help states and local governments fight the virus. They also say they need more money to ensure that they can keep paying their employees from Civil Servants to teachers and nurses. Do you really want to cut schools now . It comes after he threatened to shut down twitter for acting a fact check to his tweet. Yesterday, the president tweeted that mailin ballots will be anything less than fraj lanlufr twitter then added this fact check link from cnn and the Washington Post. Today, President Trump tweeted that social media platforms are silencing conservative voices. He threatened to strongly regulate or close down social media sites. Later in the day, he added, big action to follow. A tech reporter for the Washington Post said it would be extremely difficult for the president to actually shut down twitter. Like no, hes not going to shut down social media, but there are things the u. S. Government can feasibly do. Its not as impel simple as swi the off switch. The president will be signing an executive order on social media, but we dont know what it will entail. Jobs, jobs, jobs, weve heard this before. The governor says californias Unemployment Rate could reach 25 . Thats right there with the great depression. We told you a few minutes ago, Governor Newsom held a roundtable discussion with members of the Fitness Industry and his Economic Recovery Task force. Former president ial candidate tom steyer is heading that tasr reopening the economy. Tom, i understand the data and i think a lot of people watching us right now who are not working or underemployed are saying that sounds nice, but when can we start to work . What do you tell them . If you take a look, its industry by industry. It is in every single industry, theres a phased reopening to get people back to work. I think the governor understands in his bones that getting people back to work is absolutely critical. But weve got to i think hes also right, protecting their health along the way is critical. And people arent going to shop in places where they dont feel its safe. So its absolutely important that we do it just the way the governor is saying, putting health first. Because if you go back and look, just so you know, if you look at previous pandemics, the societies that grew the most robustly were the ones who protected the health of their citizens. And thats exactly what the governor is doing. The november election right around the corner, the old bill clinton catch phrase, its the economy, stupid. This seemingly plays right into President Trumps strength. Give me two things that joe biden needs to do to win this election. If he called you tonight and said i need two guidance points here . Look, we are in two different crises that are absolutely related, raj. One is were in a health pandemic. I think americans need a president who they can trust to protect their lives. And thats something where i think honestly Governor Newsom has done that really well, and hes got a huge support as a result of it. Just to draw the comparison of the president to the governor. Secondly, people need to think when they go back to work, or when they shop, that theyre going to be safe. And so i really believe that what were seeing in california can be a leading image for the rest of the country about how to protect lives and open up in a safe way, and get the kind of growth and robust recovery that i know we all want. And you know, raj, i was on that call today listening to people Running Health facilities. And i know how desperate they are to protect their employees. I know how seriously they take their jobs running those businesses, and how seriously they take this service that theyre providing to their clients. And i know that thats true across california. I know people are really serious about their jobs and their careers and providing for their families. So i the governor is not overlooking that for a second. Hes just putting health first to make sure that when we reopen, we dont reignite this virus. We can continue to reopen, keep moving through the phases, and get people safely back to work. So we dont have to have the secondary shutdown. Thats exactly what hes trying to do. A lot of people are hurting. Tom, thank you for your time and insight this evening. Raj, great to talk to you again. Well, b. A. R. T. Wants you back, after a 90 dropoff in riddership. The Transit System is hoping to convince you its safe to get back on the trains again. How do you convince a nervous public . You outline a plan for major changes, changes that start with a daily deep cleaning. Reporter after watching riders near livanish over the past three months, b. A. R. T. Now hope also new plan to get them back on board. But it could be a hard sell. I feel like when everybody feels like its safe to go back and its all normal, people let their guard down. Thats when youre more likely to get sick. Reporter step one, a very deep cleaning. B. A. R. T. s shot and provided this video showing crews cleaning every inch of the trains, part of the plan to convince people its safe to ride again. So when you get on this system in the morning, you know that that has been fogged with hospital grade disinfectant and that train is clean. Reporter the plan includes changing the position of seats to create more social distance, along with readily available hand sanitizer. Were running all long trains, so talking about cleanliness and social distancing, every train we have out there, were pushing to make it a tencar train, which maximizes the social distancing. Reporter and more on Board Officers so riders will feel safe. Theyve been enforcing it pretty well. Theres more police on the b. A. R. T. Than patrolling the streets sometimes. Reporter b. A. R. T. Says mask also be necessary to get on board a train. They will be giving extras to officers in case you need one. In San Francisco, scott budman, nbc bay area news. Up next, betting on big crowds.
