40 of the local cases, but only about 20 of the testing. We do not need health insurance, you do not need to pay, you do not need symptoms. You can get tested here. Targeting the works class neighborhoods was also a theme and another event in san jose where a group called core, started by Actor Sean Penn announced free weekly testing every wednesday at the antioch baptist church. The Santa Clara CountyPublic HealthDepartment Says new less invasive tests should also help encourage everyone to get tested which is key to the next step, effective Contact Tracing of new cases. Crucial. Crucial, to ife all of those people, to identify all of those people because thats where all of the cases sprout up from. Local leaders say early public response is the key. Right now if we have 300 a day and if we go to the governor and say we want more tests in Santa Clara County, hes going to say how come youre not using 300 a day. Theyre working with nonprofits to offer a mobile testing facility to go directly into neighborhoods. In san jose, robert handsa, nbc bay area news. Robert, thank you. Were following breaking news right now, in hayward, a shooting involving a police officer. Our nbc bay area sky ranger is overhead. Down below, this is the community here. The neighborhood, at center and wildwood street. A shooting involving an accident. We are working, a shooting involving an officer. We are working to bring you more information about the shooting in hayward as we get it into the newsroom. We continue to see bay area counties open up more and more. By the end of this week, all nine will be in phase two but as we mentioned, some want to go even further into phase two. Sonoma and solano counties in yellow are asking for permission from the state to go deeper into phase two. Napa county in green has already been granted permission to move forward. What is allowed in the expanded phase two . Retail Stores Including shopping malls, and swap meets are allowed to reopen. Also dining in at restaurants. Schools can reopen now with modifications. So now that restaurants are back open in napa county, for dinein, are people going . The chef hopes so. They were all smiles under the masks to comply with the new safety rules. Many restaurants removed tables to keep diners six feet apart. And customers Must Wear Masks until they reach their table. They can take them off to eat and relax though. One family we spoke to spoke to napa just to enjoy a meal out for the first time in months. Everybody is doing their things, put on their pacifics, a, put on their masks. Some customers still prefer to eat outside. Not all dining establishments have outdoor seating as an option and they are looking to temporarily allow parking lots and sidewalks to be used for outdoor dining. Six other bay area counties in red are either in phase two, to early stages or about to be. Santa clara county finally enters on friday, that allows Curbside Pickup for retail stores, some manufacturing jobs can resume. And offices where tele commuting isnt possible can reopen. The latest analysis. Six more deaths reported today. That brings the bay area death toll to 410 people. Now, part of solving this disease is the demographics. Take a look here. In San Francisco alone, the virus has killed a total of 37 people. Almost half of those people were asian. Even though asians make up only a third of the citys population. This next chart shows how deadly the virus can be within a population. Look at that number for asians again, 6. 6 for asians, is deadly, so 6. 6 with asians, who got it, died. For blacks, 3 , and down the line it goes, whites, almost 3 , and doctors at ucf say they are looking, ucsf says they are looking at why the virus is more lethal for certain races. An emotional moment at ucsf as a patient who has aws there for two months was able to go home. He was greeted by friends and family as he left the hospital. And he had been the longest hospitalized covid patient which included a significant amount of time on a ventilator. During his stay, he was able to maintain contact with families through Video Conferencing but today, they reunited in person. He says he is grateful for the medical care he received. I really thank everybody for everybody theyve done. Im happy to be alive and moving around and it is a great life. He had travelled to england earlier this year but only started getting symptoms five days after returning to the bay area. Doctors say he will need therapy as he continues to heal. Moving forward, its not just about Wearing Masks and social distancing but it is how we work, how we play and shop in the future, when we get back to our socalled normal life. Jessica aguirre joins us with some insight on what people are saying about every day life moving forward. Jessica . It is called the new normal. A Database Company surveyed 11,000 people around the world, including here in the united states, in china, across, in europe, and they were asking them questions about these Lifestyle Changes that weve been forced to make because of the pandemic. They wanted to know which ones are staying, which will become trends and which ones were going to get rid of. Some are understandable, and some are super surprising. Imagine this one is really interesting, it has to do with us working from home. Something so many of us are doing now. Dinata asked people, do you feel more productive working from home . Two thirds of us say yes, theyre just as productive when they work from home. Not surprisingly, 55 who feel more productive working from home are the people who enjoy working from home. So this trend may be here to stay. And it could impact a lot of things, like real estate. Age is a factor too. Millennials, and gen zers like working from home. Telemedicine, those who tried it for the first time during the pandemic, half of them said they like t and here is the biggie, the future of Live Entertainment. Sports, concerts, movies, the dinata ceo gary naven talked to me about when were ready to go back into that. They think when it is over, these things will come back slowly, Live Entertainment, for example, about 55 of those we surveyed said they will return to live concerts quite slowly or not at all and 64 for live theater and 57 for sporting events and 55 for movies. Almost half of the respondents said they will either come back very slowly or not at all to some of these Live Entertainment situations. And it really means that well have to think about reimagining live event, and even doing relief strategies for content for live and streaming audiences. This is a global study and is it different perceptions depending where you live . We found it different based on where people live, but it is generally clustered in the same areas. You tend to think the same, regardless of where they are in the world. And we have the same sort of interests, attitudes and opinions about these things. And so it does tend to be pretty similar to matter where we are. So this lays out the ground work for companies having to figure out how to pivot and adapt. Coming up at 6 00, we will talk to mr. Laben about the covid career shift. How many people are going to be in the same jobs they are now and how many people are already preparing for that next phase of life. Janelle, raj . A very interesting one. See you at 6 00, jessica. A big question now for parents and teachers and students. When will our schools reopen in terms of their campuses, and what will it look like . The superintendent today has some answers for us. Among the changes, students will be Wearing Masks. Nbc bay area Marianne Favro reports from los gatos. Reporter moat schools in california could open in august or september but it will be up to each School District to determine whether to offer distance learning, and class learning, or a combination of both. Students will no longer work side by side, when they head back to school in the fall. Their classrooms are more likely to look like this. Six feet apart. With tape outlining each students personal area. Today, california superintendent of public instruction outlined other possible changes. It is widely believed that in order for us to reopen, with schools, in a social distancing kind of fashion, that students and staff will have to wear masks. It is believed that well have to sanitize schools down every day. Los gatos fourth grader lyla siler is concerned wearing a mask at school will interfere with learning. I think that that would make eacher a little bit harder because it would be harder for the teacher and also, with the younger students, they might not really remember that and they might take off their masks. Tony thurmond says each School District will make the call on how kids will learn. We suspect many schools will in fact offer a balance of inclass instruction as well as some form of distance learning. Now, the districts must face a challenging math problem. With the state slashed to slash Education Funding by, with the state poised to slash Education Funding by millions of dollars, how to keep kids safe and maintain the same level of learning. Marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Some other critical questions here. Can you pay your rent . Are you still waiting for that unemployment benefit to come in . And when do you dip into your 401 k . We have some answers for you. And some guidance. Joint us tomorrow night for a, join us tomorrow night for a 30 opinion minute special called making it in the bay, tomorrow night. A plan to reopen yosemite. What you need to know if you want to go. And tangled in fishing nets. New pictures and video of rescuers freeing a whale off the coast of monterey bay. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. It may be sunny out but theres a lot happening. Im tracking the heat, when the wind picks up and what our chances are of any june rainfall. Were following a developing story in the south bay. A fire at a vacant strip mall in san jose is pretty intense. You can see here, our sky ranger was overhead. This was on south basskum avenue down the street from dellmar avenue. It started at 1 30 this afternoon. The flames are now out. But firefighters say they will be on scene for a while. Putting out hot spots. And investigating a cause. A june opening could be in the works for Yosemite National park but you will need reservations to get. In under the plan which needs to be signed off by the federal government, crowds would be limited to half the normal attendance. Some National Parks including joshua tree, saw limited openings this week. We already reported when yosemite does reopen, it will be without shuttle buses and other amenities. Popular trails could be one way only. And social distancing enforced. Well, were seeing restaurants adjusting their menus to work with takeout only and Companies Like uber eats and door dash switched to contactless delivery. But one Bay Area Company thinks it has a better idea. Delivery by robot. We have been talking about this for years and now we actually have to have it, jessica . Yes, i would like a turkey club. And i would like it delivered via a little starship robot. Thats what theyre called. The company is called starship. It is headquartered in San Francisco. Its come up with this contactless robot that can actually deliver food. What a great idea. Right . So theyre delivering food from restaurants in Mountain View on kessler street, and the owners fill the bot with your food order and send the robot to your doorstep. No person is needed. They can go up to three or four miles on their own. They can read the walk symbols on the streets and they know when they can safely cross the street so your sandwich doesnt get smushed. One employee says the robots have been easy to work with and obviously super safe for the customer. The food lid opens up and you put the food in and you push the button and there is no contact and it stays locked until it gets to the destination. Delivery with these food robots has just doubled since the whole pandemic started. Theyre super easy to work with and they suspect they will be even more plausible, going different places and employees say they enjoy using it. So there you go. You can order it on the phone. And i will order a crem brulee. Do we know, is it on the street . Is it on the sidewalk . What happens with other foot traffic and car traffic . Do we know the details yet . It is maneuvering, it goes around, it seems to know where its going. It probably drives better than i do. Yes, we do know that. With gps. Thanks, jessica. New images tonight of the rescue of a hump back whale entangled in fishing gear in the monterey bay. Rescue crews say the crab Fishing Equipment on the whales tail, it was so heavy it acted like an anchor holding the whale in place and that made the job of freeing him easier. Pretty incredible. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. I remember like week three or four of the shelter at home, during one of your weather forecasts, there was a doorbell and it was your dinner coming in. That was one of the highlights of working at home. Oh, i know, right . And theres no deliveries coming tonight but there is something cooking in the oven right now. Wish we had smellovision, it smells like pizza and i will have to check with darryl to find out what is happening in the kitchen. Nonetheless, if you had a little bit of time to get outside today, it made all of the difference. I know the past couple of day, i didnt get out a whole lot so it helped out a lot. Lots of those kinds of days coming our way. A live look outside at the sky camera network, we have a few clouds, just over the hilltops. And the Higher Elevations help to provide some orographic lifting, basically if there is any moisture in the atmosphere, it gets up the side of the mountains, and there you can see, some of the clouds forming, as they reach their condensation point. Otherwise, temperatures right now, 71 degrees in san jose. Going down to some cooler 50s by 10 00 p. M. So if you dont have ac, dont worry, we have a cooler breeze returning. As we turn to tomorrow morning, a mix of sun and clouds, easy for us, upper 40s and low 50s, with a bright start in the south bay at 53. Mostly clear in the east bay. 51. Looks good in the area. A mighty fine start for the north bay at 47. The big change i want to alert you about right now is high pressure. This is what is going to bring in the warmer air. But we are noting that a low pressure, the weaker system, will develop off to the north and it is going to eventually kick up the wind for us as well. So we will have more on that coming up in the sevenday forecast. And i want to take you to tomorrows temperatures where we will be going five to ten degrees warmer. And that will put us at 80 in morgan hill. A few low 80s in the bay. 80 in concord. And even by the bay, 75 in oakland will feel nice. The peninsula, we have you at 74 in redwood city. And well drop off again, to some 60s in San Francisco. With 67 in the mission. Thats all because of the cold westerly wind at 22 miles an hour. You get away from that cold ocean breeze and while those numbers warm up to 80 in napa, and 77 in clear lake. The extended forecast, sf, notice, focus in on sunday, monday, tuesday, and wednesday, low to mid70s coming on in. For the inland valleys, we got you up to 88 by sunday. 93 memorial day. 94 on tuesday. So what about beyond this, with all of that sunshine . I wanted to draw your attention to my june forecast, and im holding on to a 65 chance of a few showers, the first and second week of june. So the way i see it right now, were not done with the sporadic shower chances, right now, and it is definitely going to be good news, for the garden, and at least that immediate fire danger. I will have to find out whats cooking in the kitchen, guys and get back to you in the 6 00 p. M. And maybe we will see a little lucy on lucy wednesday. Smellovision, i expect a full report at 6 00. Thank you. A deadly disease spreading quickly in rabbits and creeping closer to the bay area. We have the details. Heres something interesting. A look at our next normal. This is a look from our nbc bay area sky ranger. This is delores park in San Francisco. Notice the circles down below. In fact, we can see here, as the helicopter starts to rotate here, down on the ground, you can see it even better, here is the bottom line, stay in your circle. Were expecting a lot of sunshine, as we head into memorial day weekend. And the city is trying to limit the crowds, so theyve drawn in these circles. Now the weeks pass, you probably know, delores park has been overcrowded so the circles have been drawn in and we have seen the circles being used in parks in new york and brooklyn and now were seeing it here in the bay area. Our new normal. Another contagious and deadly virus is spreading across california but it is not impacting people. Only infecting rabbits. Nbc bay areas melissa colorado explains. Here is a really fluffy little guy. Reporter like many of us, zane, the 2yearold rabbit is under a stayathome order, too. Thats because his owner is worried zane could catch a deadly virus known as rabbit hemorrhagic disease. Its traveled over a thousand miles, since mid march, and just was in california last week. The virus only infects wild and domestic rabbits and what started as an outbreak in new mexico has made its way into southern california. Last week, the fish and wildlife confirmed the virus was found in the carcass of a jack rabbit near palm springs. Dr. Anne martin fears it could be a matter of days for the virus to reach the bay area because even humens can spread the virus without knowing it. It can be spread on our shoes and our car tires. If theres a mass rabbit dieoff, what will this mean for our ecosystem. Predators will look for other food sources so it is important to keep your cats indoors. If youre out on ta hike and spot the carcass of a wild rabbit, call the agency to have itted. Up next the graduating class of 2020. Ted. Up next the graduating class of 2020. Ted.
