Anything you want to say to alex . 3 million in skins, the 450 alex i had the good fortune of working on his campaign and meeting his family. Alex is a really true states man. I mean, in the sense that hes th there to serve. And i think thats so important. And what we learn from caesar murray learning how to s n tv today, over 1 mi 450 ,000 and so forth. And over 1 million from you at we are serving. We are here to serve people, to home so a grand total raised 5. 5 saf help people, and alex really exemplifies that in the way that you. Coming up tonight here on nbc, he works, how hard he works. Join some furry friends, the hes very committed. 2020 Beverly Hills dog show. He engages his family. Hes very committed toward his the news is next for most of you family as well. And so i think hes a tremendous except on the west coast where it will be seen at its regularly example of what the types of scheduled time and for rich, paul, gary, jerry politicians we need in our and our friends at pga tour society to have people like alex padilla that really do serve the entertainment, our entire golf channel crew, thanks for joining people that they represent, and us and so long for now that they ensure that provide the best type of leadership possible for us. Well, it sounds like you are talking about yourself as well, because all of those adjectives a describe you as well. Its an honor to call you my friend, and thank you so much for what you have done. And the fire is still in you. And thank you so much and god take care of. Thank you very much, damion. All the best to you, your family and automatic of your viewers. Thank you. And the honorable alex padilla is next, so stay with us. Transition out, as you might say, over a period of time. Lets turn to your right. Look at that symbol on your right. That has been your life. It defines you and in some sense you define it. Well, you know, they mive b very fortunate. Ive had the opportunity to work with him for 20 years when he was alive and president of the organization. He taught me so much and shared so much. And, you know, you just couldnt help but learn being around him. And hes just a tremendous example. And then working with farm workers. Here are the hardest working folks that go out there every single day. We are finally calling them essential workers. Not treating them as essential comunidad del valle by california secretary of state workers, but at least we are the honorable alex padilla. Calling them and recognizing the fact without them we dont have alex, welcome back to comunidad del valle. How are things treating you with a floood supply in this country. This whole covid situation . Well, we are all in it so those men and women doing the together. It certainly has been interesting. Crops are critical to our food its been surreal. I thi bed, we supply especially in this time we are in with covid19 and all count our blessings because our the other issues that are family is healthy. Confronting us and challenges everybody we know is healthy. Facing us. But having that opportunity to we know a lot of people who work with them and learn from cant say the same. A lot of people have been them as well and have them teach diagnosed. Us the importance o at lot of fatalities of course. But california if you look at treated with the respect thatbl the size of the population, our numbers are relatively low. So thank you to everybody for doing their part. Its not easy to stay home and you, when you look at them what they do every day. Easy to wear masks and gloves and you know it because you came and all the things we have been asked to do, but its because we from sal ininas valley and you w have been abiding by the detective ti directives that we are in better shape than most. I think youre right. We just did an interview with arturo rodriguez, farm workers that. And i feel really blessed. Well talk about covid dell president. And he called you a real states man a man who continues to fight forthright cause. Your thoughts on those, and your feelings about arty . Look, arty is a legend, you know. In the past, i think you and i emma in our next segment. But its time they call us have talked about the legacy of essential workers. Caesar chavez, a lot know him yes, thats right. From history books, hopefully we have been always been more each day. Essential workers, without them and for arty to come in as the second president of the union making sacrifices there would nighted farm workers, talk about not be food on our table and you no he that as well as anybody having big shoes to fill, but he did for many, many years. Else. Thank you very much. I had a chance to work with arty arty is the president of the when i was on the city Council United farm workers. Hell be back in our next segment, so stay with us. In los angeles and early efforts and ago jobs certainly when i was in the state senate advocating for farm worker rights. And even today. Hes retired but donte as ever. Yeah, i know. You ask how we are doing during this pandemic. Think about farm workers, right. We are all anxious making sure the Food Supply Chain continues. We would not have food on our table if it wasnt for farm workers doing their workday in and day out. And now with the health risks out there, they are deemed essential workers, we have to give them the protections they deserve and the assistance they deserve. Because even under normal conditions, their wages, their benefits leave a lot to be desired. Absolutely. But yet you run a big office, secretary of states office. How are you able to manage remotely . Because everything you know, im remote, youre remote. How has that transition been . And we are back with my dear you know, its been fast. Friend rodriguez the president i think actually 45, 50 days ago emeritus of the farmers united. When the initial orders were first coming down, i just returned from a trip to and being ocean shee essential washington d. C. When things were are right in the thick of it. Happening first. Nba season shutting down. Other sports leagues, how have they been treated during this whole covid19 situation . Well, i think people are conferences canceled. No large gatherings, i had a beginning to realize the pretty good idea where this was importance and criticalness of going in talking to governor the farm workers out there, the newsom. So my family has been agriculture workers, the workers selfimposed stayathome order than its been officially. That make that sacrifice, and they are seeing them as critical as the nurses and other first so my immediate instincts as father and husband what do i responders who are also dogg need to take care of my family. But immediately thereafter as the head of an important state doing essential work thats agency, what do we need to do to needed. There is nobody to substitute for them. If they are not there, there is both take sure we take care of our employees, but at the same not any harvesting done anywhere time maintain the essential throughout california and throughout the c really, functions that we are there for. A lot of people see me very active in the election space to see everybody begin to change promoting voter registration, their at least the way they talk turnout, cyber security, things like that but our office also about farm workers. And then we have been able to, does a lot of business filings, over the course of the last few whether its businesses starting weeks, we have worked extremely up, closing out, nonprofits hard throughout the united farm organizations and they need to maintain with us current. Workers and Caesar Chavez so fortunately we allow for a lot of that to be done online foundation, all of us have come together to really do what is necessary to ensure that farm workers have the benefits that nowadays. So any Business People go online they need, and they get the same and see biz files online. Opportunities as everyone else. But moving the better part of now, we have in california we 500 employees to be able to work were finally successful in from home while instilling getting and ensuring sick pay physical distancing and other for all farm workers, regardless Health Recommendations and inic of what your legal status is, and regardless of what size of farm that they worked on. To be there. Im proud of my staff because and so that was a very critical they pulled it together quickly together as a team. Victory here with governor i think its a new normal once newsom. And then, of course, we have its going to be once we get been able to also be able to through the other side of this curve here. Very true. Last week on the show we had a provide food for farm workers. And we have been working jointly group called census, they go out in the community, well, they are with the Ufw Foundation to get supposed to go out in the out literally distribute community and get the census countsed. Its all virtual now and phone thousands of meals to farm workers in the Salinas Valley calls. But we are still moving forward, right . I think Santa Clara County they said is the third city in the and oxnard in the big county getting efforts they need agriculture communities. But its still there. And now we are going to be absolutely. Good reminder for everybody. Distributing mask. We talked about it in previous and we distributed well over shows. Once every ten years as required 20,000 masks and getting more by the constitution, we need to donated. They want to make sure farm conduct the National Population workers are protected. Count. Thats what the census is. Because its difficult when you are working in the fields, as how many people live in the country. And its done state by state. You well know damion, its hard to be 6 feet apart when you are because its the state population counts that harvesting the strawberries or determines a couple of very the broccoli or cauliflower important things. Fundamentally our representation whatever you are working on the in congress, how many people machine, but ats least you have serve in the house of to have the mask on to protect representatives representing california. If we have an under count in them. So, you know, we are being able california, well have less to make some progress here in representation and we certainly dont want that. Regards to ensure that farm workers are protected, that they also impacting communities is are safe, their families are safe, the communities they live funding. When federal funding is in are safe. Distributed to states on a per and thats something that we capita basis, its our state were talking and worrying about that safety in 2020. Population count that determines how much resources our state it seems like we take two steps gets. When i say our state, i dont forward and then sometimes a mean its going to some account step backward, and then three in sacramento. Steps forward. Im talking about how its distributed to each county, to so its an ongoing battle. Each city, to each community. It definitely is. You know, funds like funding for its one that, damion, it goes housing, funding for over generations. Ive had the good fortune of infrastructure. I used to tell this story about doing this 47 years, butrs funding for education. Because ten years ago the biggest under counted population in california was children under five. My youngest child is five years old and heels thene lou in the house. So how we forget that little kids are counted, i have no idea. But think about the 3, 4, 5yearolds today they are 13, 14, 15, but the funding wouldnt arrive at the schools if they werent counted. So thats a direct example why we need to count. And we can say the same argument from public health, right, if we have under count we wont get our share of the Health Care Services that we deserve. So its important to still be counted but we have to adapt our ways to reach out to people, to remind people, and to assist people. The good news is there is still time. By now if you have not participated in the census, you should have received the paper survey form. If you want to do it on paper and mail it back, thats your choice. An even better way to do is it online, go to my con t ken sus. Gov and it will walk you through it. Or you can do it on the phone and my census 2020 website youll see all the phone numbers o it by phone. It only takes about ten minutes. Its questions but your family and community will benefit. We are with alex padilla the secretary of state. We have about four minutes in our next segment, alex, to talk about the elections. Because they are coming up. So well be back with the honorable alex padilla. Stay with us. And we are back with the honorable alex padilla here at comunidad del valle, secretary of state. Listen, secretary, the president said we cant have mail in ballots. People will cheat. It can lead to a miss count. We cant have that. What say you . I say two things. Number one, hes a hypocrite. He is trying to undermine our confidence both by mail when he himself is a vote by mailer. Vote by mail has been in place not just california but many states for many years. And its proven to be secure for voters. Increas increases participation. And its been a good practice. And hes trying to undermine it because of his political agenda. I also think whats going on, hes trying to change the subject. My opinion he has failed in reespns to this covid19 pandemic. Instead of taking ownership of that and focusing on that, hes going back to his ways of throwing out a lot of lies, especially when it comes to elections and Voting Rights to distract us, to underminus, and try to influence the november election in a very bad way. So lets not buy into that. Lets know that in california the same policies that we have championed to increase access to our democracy make any more sense during this pandemic. So as we approach november, you can online still or sign up register to vote. But well be sending a ballot to all voters in the state. Well also still afford in person voting opportunities both on and before election day. The more people we get to vote early, whether by mail or safety in person, smaller lines, and healthier crowds on election day for voters, and election workers alike. So well continue to lead the way in california and hope the rest of the nation follows. And you have all the confidence that, to play devils advocate, the election will be absolutely. Ry vote that will again, measures that we put in place for feign interference in our elections. Now in addition to make sure th maintain the accessibility and the security, and safety of our elections as well. Aen we can do that. Ill give you another example of another great tool that we have. You can subscribe to get alerts when you vote by mail to know when the ballot is making the way to your house hold, on the way back to county, get a notification when its received, and when its been counted, and so you know for sure that your vote was counted. All right. We have about 20 seconds left, mr. Secretary. Any final thoughts before i let you go . No, just kind of what i started with. Its been very challenging times. Pray that everyone continues to stay safe, including you, damion and your beautiful family. Keep washing hands. Dont touch your face. And well get through this. All right. Thank you so much. The honorable alex padilla california secretary of state. Its an honor to call you my friend and honor to see the work you are doing across the state. Thank you so much. Thank you for joining us. Well see you next week here from my home to yours. Were all doing our part by staying at home. That could mean an increase in energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off.
