The state superintendent says schools may have to adopt staggered shifts to give students more staff. That means some in the morning, others in the afternoon. That will likely force districts to hire extra staff, but many are asking how can they afford that considering the state is facing a 54 billion budget deficit. We know that this is going to be daunting for us, but we can stand up to the challenges. The Berkeley Unified School district is considering staggered School Schedules for fall. The rift between President Trump and dr. Anthony fauci appears to be growing. The business first path and the health first path and they do not align. At least one of the casualties here is optimism around the country. Lets show you what were talking about. Fauci, most doctors will tell you this is a dangerous slope that were starting to go down, to question medical experts. Either we go from peaks to going down to valleys, you know, depending on when we open or close, or we see small, controlled outbreaks that our Public Health response is very good and were opening in smaller measures over a longer period of time. Or the worst case scenario, is next fall we get a second peak, which is compounded by the flu season. And we have seen that in past pandemics. In 1918 pandemic, the second wave was particularly hard to deal with. So nobody knows, and i think most scientists think that we know that were not immune, so we are going to see more cases. 23 Bay Area Companies expanding their testing. Does genetics, if anything, have a role in the severity of people getting covid19 . We dont know, and thats one of the concerns. What we know is there are certain groups of young people who do not have traditional risk factors for covid19 who are coming into hospitals and having a pretty tough time. Theyre critically ill, and we dont know if its genetics in those particular individuals that might be driving their risk factors for having a severe disease. So studies could give a signal to what it is that is in an individual that might be driving those risks. Another day of cloudy skies, and jeff, this could continue for a while. Yes, we do have some more rainfall ahead. But heres the good news, janelle, jess, everyone at home. A little window of some sunshine coming our way before we see our weekend storm system. So thats good news for you. As we look at the radar and satellite, we did get a little fwit bit of rainfall today, nothing big. We have the Doppler Radar scanning. And we are following some consistent shower activity over morgan hill right now. This is moving off towards the east. So youll likely continue with spotty showers through 6 36 tonight. Tomorrow, isolated shower chances right here for the morning. Cool 50s and hold on to that possibility at least through the early afternoon. Temperatures warm up a couple of degrees. Well go with the low 70s here for the south bay and the east bay, inland valleys. And closer to the water, we have 69 in oakland, 64 in San Francisco, and 58 in half moon bay. What i want to do is push it ahead towards the next storm system we have moving in. So you are ready to go for that. You can see sunday morning, 1 00, this is a widereaching storm from the Pacific Northwest all the way down to the bay area. And as we continue through sunday, i think everybody in the Morning Hours will get some rainfall. Now, well go over those totals a lot closer, but the good news about that is the pollen. If your allergies have been bothering you, that is certainly going to help. Well talk about those totals for sunday, and well show you exactly when some sunshine returns. If you notice the skies are quiet now, but that wasnt the case earlier today. Welcome back to studio z. Im raj mathai. Earlier today, a lot of people were looking up in the sky. The f15s from the central valley, the California National guard making their presence known. Did you see them . Did you hear them . The jets circling the bay area, oakland over to San Francisco, down the peninsula to san jose. I saw them at palo alto at 11 00 a. M. Sharp. A lot of people started to cheer where i was. Maybe where were you, as well. They buzzed more than a dozen hospitals and health care facilities. Down below, this was cool to see. The heartfelt cheers and gratitude from all the health care workers. This was the scene at Regional Medical center in san jose. But really, this is what it looked like in so many different hospitals and medical centers. You can see the doctors and nurses taking a quick break to look at the sky. It was just such a feeling of deep gratitude for the recognition, acknowledgement of all the work that the frontline staff have been doing. So were just very grateful. We should add this air National Guard confirming to us that what was done today, no extra cost to taxpayers. This was considered a training mission, which was regularly conducted at this time. They just did it with all the hospitals. You ready for this . Who is the guy with the white beard . Within the past hour, we saw warriors head coach steve kerr. You recognize him there . He was joined by the congressman on instagram live. The warriors and its 400 employees are eager to get back to work, but they dont know if theyre going to finish this season or even if theyre going to begin next season on time. So a lot of concern, of course, for all the pro sports, especially here at home with the warriors and the nba. Lets end this evening, at least our segment with some ghosts. And whats the deal here . This is the most goat stories weve run in my 20 years of the station. Yesterday we saw the goats in san jose. Today we see the goats in San Francisco. But this time it was all planned. Right now at 6 30, a new look at the rift between the cdc and the white house. Documents show the white house ignored key cdc advice. When the Coronavirus Crisis was still developing, the cdc suggested a plan for reopening the country and gave it to the white house. The Associated Press got a copy of that plan. The cdc gave the white house that plan last month. In it, doctors recommended a Strong National response. It took the responsibility off governors, saying it was dangerous for states to go it alone. The plan also recommended keeping businesses closed until after 42 days of declining cases. But the white house recommended 28. In the end, the white house shelved the cdcs guidance. Today, Chuck Schumer says following the cdcs advice is critical. America needs the candid guidance of our best scientists. The white house said it thought the cdc plan was a draft and incorporated some of the advice into its own plan. A new threat tied to the coronavirus, foreign hackers are trying to steal the work of u. S. Researchers. Today, the fbi warned that hackers backed by china are targeting u. S. Researchers working on the pandemic. Cyber experts in Great Britain say more than one country is involved in the hacking attempts, and that u. S. Labs arent the only ones seeing illegal activity. China is denying todays claims. Is covid19 deadlier than we thought . And a new warning for parents, as more children are coming down with a Mysterious Illness that may be related to the virus. Joining us now is dr. Peter hong. Thanks for joining us again. Were hearing more and more about this illness in kids, the cdc preparing to alert doctors about it. Its called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome. Its seen in 17 states, maybe one case in the bay area. What are the symptoms . The main thing were seeing the tip of the iceberg, and people still dont know what the spectrum of disease is. Thats why i think the next stage is maybe parents being alerted to milder symptoms. We have seen pictures of like a rash. One child who died in new york had a stomach that child survived. Had stomach pains and a heart attack. So the symptoms are a little bit different. Yeah. Thats a great point, janelle. The symptoms are not the direct effect of the virus, but it comes after the virus is long gone. This is like a delayed effect. So weve been seeing other things like covid toes. These patients, many of them dont have virus. So the symptoms are kind of changing as covid develops and progresses as the months pass by basically . Yeah. So i think people are just more open to seeing these later manifestations. Thats why our patients, people are trying to look at the rash, and maybe a few other things like stomach pain and redness around the ice. But this the hospital setting, when people are super sick, theyre dying of shock, but its still not very common. Okay. Dr. Chinhong, is covid19, the coronavirus, deadlier than we thoug thought . We were hearing a death rate of 2 to 3 , now the w. H. O. Saying 6 in the u. S. , maybe higher in europe . Its a difficult statistic, because we havent done enough testing, so we dont know what the denominator is. Of course, if you have done fewer testing, the number of sick people looks more dramatic, because the bottom number is not high. However, in multiple other places, i think people are settling around 2 to 3 . Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on how your hospital is equipped to handle it. But in contrast to the influenza where the death rate is less than 1 , or less than 0. 1 in some cases, thats a big difference. So it is deadlier than the flu. We heard, you had some symptoms and you just got tested. How are you doing . What were the test results . Yeah. So i started on sunday night having some, you know, muscle aches and some sore throats, and i was trying to deny it for a while. I was keeping myself safe all the time. But then i called the drivethrough facilities and i went yesterday. And it was quite i was going to say ordeal, but it was quite an experience to get that biopsy. Not biopsy, but it was a swab, a faisal swab, because it felt like a brain biopsy. And your results are negative . Yeah. My results luckily are negative. That is good. Thank goodness for that. You have that kind of hanging over your head. Youre an Infectious Disease specialist, you work at the hospital. Does that weigh on you every day that you are exposed to the virus and could get infected . I think thats been kind of an evolution. In the beginning i thought for sure i would get it. But then i think as we began getting more universal masking, i felt safer. But with the onset of symptoms i had on sunday, i became vulnerable once again. So youre right, janelle, i feel like its something thats not going to go away. And any little symptom we have, we always wonder is it covid or not . Right. I did have some symptoms, but it was allergies on sunday. But dr. Chinhong, we are glad youre healthy and safe and we appreciate your time, because we know how busy you are. So we thank you and salute you. Thanks much, janelle. We are certainly grateful that hes healthy. During this time in a pandemic, most of us are spending more time inside our homes more than usual. But one east bay photographer is finding art in that isolation. Joe rosato, jr. Is showing how he is capturing it. Reporter a camera can also capture mood and place. Every time he clicks the shutter during this time of pandemic, he is capturing time. A couple months ago during an evening walk through his albany neighborhood, he hatched the idea of photographing neighbors sheltering at home. Ill just see if they want to pose a note in the window, and just sort of express how theyre feeling about this shelter in place situation. Reporter night after night, more families posed f e ed for s and he posted them on social media. Soon people began contacting him to take their picture. I think of it is a document, documents what were going through and feeling. Reporter hes travelled the east bay taking the pictures. Now the view through his lens has become something of an escape. In this time, its been really therapeutic for me. So nice. 15 minutes ago, raj showed us some goat videos from San Francisco doing Fire Prevention eating. We have an update on this goat video that went viral across the country. An update on the herd that broke loose in san jose. A San FranciscoRestaurant Owner has made a deal. Owner of lucky odools agreed to plead guilty of wire fraud. He was arrested back in january. Prosecutors accuse him of several schemes, including bribing an sfo commissioner for prime restaurant space. San jose is finally putting some empty trailers to use, housing the homeless. The state donated the 100 trailers for use during the pandemic. The trailers have been parked in the city near the happy hollow zoo. Some needed repairs to make them liveable. The city Council Voted to spend some 700,000 to open about 90 to people with confirmed cases of the virus, or to people with underlying Health Conditions, which put them at extra risk. Apparently, even goats are getting tired of sheltering at home. Last night, more than 100 of them broke through a fence and they were not social distancing. This is in the silver creek area of san jose. They were stampeding past those beautiful milliondollar homes. At one point, they headed right towards his home. They didnt care, they wanted to meet him. And he was not wearing a mask and neither were they. All of a sudden, they decided to make a turn and get onto our driveway and come real close to us. So that was quite exciting. I didnt realize our dpraj was op garage was open, so we were nervous they would get this there. The goats trampled the roses, devoured the plants. After their brief escape, theyre back on the job reducing the fire risk near those homes. This is when theyre out, trying to reduce the fuel and the fire danger and doing a great job. And what a sight to see. I like the way they all cluster together. Like no one breaks free. Theyre all close. Theyre oh, lucy. Look at you lucy wednesday. She likes those goats, you guys. She would. Well talk more about incoming rain, you all, and when your dogs paws are going to be getting wet. Well track that sunday storm with lucy coming up in just a few minutes. All right. For San Francisco, temperatures will be in the 60s. The next seven days, lucy, come on over here. Lucy, come, over here. And then as we get you into the inland valley forecast, you can see up to 80 by friday. And then once we hit sunday, down to 71. And 69 as we roll into monday. Lucy, up, up, up.
