This morning another two deaths under investigation which could bring the total to five as new york citys mayor announces a major change for kids who are showing symptoms this morning a search for answers as 38 kids in new york city are now confirmed to have the Mysterious Illness called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome. This is every parents nightmare. Nobody knew about it nobody was watching for it. Reporter statewide there are at least 85 cases. On sunday the governor is announcing two more deaths after three children were already confirmed to have died from the rare sickness believed to be related to covid19. The syndrome causes life threatening inflammation in the body and organs with potentially serious effects on the heart nbc news finding cases of the illness in nine states and washington, d. C. The fact it is affecting children is upsetting. 13yearold Anthony Lawson in the icu at seattle Childrens Hospital about a week ago he started showing signs of what his mom teresa thought were allergies. Itchy eyes, fever and a headache but within a few days those symptoms took a dangerous turn. Once we got to Childrens Hospital, we met him in the cardiac icu where we were told it appeared he was in the middle of Heart Failure they ended up taking a blood test that blood test came back positive for the covid19 antibodies. Doctors alerting the public to a range of symptoms including fever, rashes, abdominal and chest pain, change in skin color, rapid heart rate with symptoms often mirroring more commonly known illnesses like kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome the cdc and new york state working on developing criteria that can be used nationwide. Here is the bottom line. Its rare and most kids do recover but the symptoms can develop six weeks after the coronavirus even in children who didnt know they were infected theres no way to tell which kids might be affected, savannah. All right, kristen, thank you. For even more on what parents need to watch out for, lets turn to nbcs medical correspondent dr. John torres. Dr. Torres, good morning as a mother, so many of us are paying attention to this i read a pediatrician saying this is something we didnt learn about in medical school. This is new to the medical profession what should people be watching out for and why do they think its related to covid19. Exactly, savannah. This is one of those things that just kind of came on all of a sudden and doctors started noticing it across the country and in europ in particular. They started putting the pieces together saying there seems to be something here and more cases. As of now, as Kristen Dahlgren says, theres only a couple hundred cases around the world but its a concern as parents, theres one thing we want to make sure is our children are healthy symptoms to look for, fever more than five days severe abdominal pain. Blotchy blue skin, pale skin or discoloration. You saw pictures, that type of rash, trouble breathing, lethargy or rapid heart rate if you notice these things, you want to be seen immediately. Remember, this is rare this doesnt happen very often its something new onto the scene. Doctors are taking a strong look at this. Messages are getting out to try to look at patients for this these are people we didnt know had coronavirus because children didnt show symptoms but they can get this a few weeks later so we have to be careful. Its one of those things, the link isnt established its there, but youre not sure if its caused by the coronavirus. Is that right . Its still too early to tell exactly what they are finding out in the vast majority of these children, they either test positive for covid19 or have antibodies. Not all tested for antibodies. Thats whats making it confusing. Its like kawasaki, rare to begin with, but not exactly like kawasaki disease its a big puzzle right now whats going on. Luckily were paying more attention to it. Not just here but across the world. Well find out more information and get treatments and get a better understanding how to deal with these children and hopefully how to prevent it, which is the main thing. Thankfully it is rare well put more information on the website. If you see those symptoms, get right to the er. Dr. Torres, thank you so much. Back to you. Savannah, thank you.
