Phase three includes the reopening of salons, gyms, movie theaters, and churches, among other places. And today, a notable revelation from the governor. This whole thing started in the state of california, the First Community spread, in a nail salon, and remind you, and remind everybody of that, im very worried about that. We reached out to the Governors Office to clarify that first case, if it stemmed from a nail salon in Santa Clara County. We have not heard back. However, Santa Clara County told us in the last hour that the case the governor was referring to was not in Santa Clara County. Well, every thursday, we get the new numbers. Today is the same trend. Layoffs and furloughs continue. Another three million americans filing for Unemployment Benefits just last week. Now, while that number is big, its the lowest total since mid march, when the coronavirus was declared a pandemic. Now, in the last seven weeks, this is the big number, 33 million americans have lost their jobs. More than four million of them right here in california. Okay, take a look at this. We want to show you a chart that shows where the unemployment hot spots are in the bay area. The numbers are compiled by the San Francisco chronicle. The black color here, it shows off the layoffs here, you can see just a sliver in each county. And the dark pink here, layoffs in april, and you can see, thousands in almeda, San Francisco, and santa clara counties. And now, the light pink layoffs, right here, in may, not as many, promising news, but of course, were just one week into may. Now, as you can see, San Francisco with the most layoffs, in the past two and a half months with 31,800, and Santa Clara County, second with almost 21,000, and almeda county, about 15,000 layoffs. Staggering numbers, its estimated that one in five californians are out of work. Raj . Many complaints of price gouging across the bay area. Today, almeda county did something about it. A pleasanton Grocery Store is under fire. The indian Grocery Store, shoppers started complaining of high prices to the district attorney, and there was an investigation and found the store had raised some prices by more than 300 . The store and the owner have been charged with price gouging. During a state of emergency, its against the law for businesses to raise prices more than 10 . Contra costa county and napa county will now test you whether youre feeling sick or not. And its free. Heres nbc bay area melissa colorado. More testing, and more contact tracing. Contra costa county Health Officials hope that combination is going to help them gauge when it is time to lift restrictions and with eight testing sites like this one, spread throughout the county, officials want to quadruple the number of people they test for covid19. Were dealing with this. You can tolerate it. Thats the message Contra Costa County public Health Officials have for people who might feel skittish about getting a six inch long swab inserted into their nose for 15 seconds. We encourage anyone who thinks they need to get a test, to come and get one. You dont need to have all of the symptoms to have the test. There are now five drivethrough testing sites and three walkup testing locations spread throughout Contra Costa County. All tests are free. Whether or not you have insurance. But you do have to call the county to make an appointment. If theyre offering free testing, its excellent, because we have been waiting for that opportunity. If a person tests positive, thats when the countys contact tracers start dialing up that persons family and friends. To dooif who, to identify those close contacts and advise those close contacts to quarantine themselves. The county is currently testing about 500 people per day. Thats not good enough, says the countys health officer. We want to test four to five times as many people as we are testing currently. The county says until they can test more than 2,000 people a day, and find out where exactly the virus is still spreading, its too soon to reopen for business. Everybody needs to get back to work, you know. The whole economy will collapse. I dont know if they will collapse if we dont hold out. Melissa colorado, nbc bay area news. Our nbc bay area sky ranger was overhead. The two children in the car were killed. A third was injured. The driver also hurt and is in the hospital of the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Were not clear if the children were wearing seatbelts. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor. More danger on the roads. Take a look at this video. A vta bus engulfed in flames, this happened in san jose around 10 30 this morning, outside valley medical center. Only the operator of that bus, and one passenger were on board. Thankfully, both got off safely. The pandemic has overwhelmed californias rainy day fund. Building that cushion of money was one of former governor jerry browns proud accomplishments. Last year, california had a 21 billion surplus. Today, a year later, Governor Newsom revealed the state is 54 billion in the red. Weeks of staying home have closed businesses, prompting millions of unemployment claims, and deprives the state of billions in tax dollars. But because of this pandemic, because of what it has done, these revenue shortfalls are bigger than even the state of california. We need the federal government to recognize this. Governor newsom says he is working with california lawmakers to get that federal help. Noting that all states and local governments are desperately in need of federal stimulus money. Earlier, we were talking about the mixed messages from the governor, and then down to the county level, it is happening in fairfield, a restaurant, owners are not sure when they will be able to reopen. Just yesterday, a City Council Member announced the citys restaurant in fairfield had been cleared to open, as part of the phase two, tomorrow. These teenagers are volunteering their time to teach courses and some really fun courses to Young Students grades three to six. Joining me now is copresident of yapa kids, andrew liu, a junior at Hartford School in san jose. I checked out your web site. Very impressed, andrew. Youre 17 years old. You started this with some classmates. How did this idea come about . Thanks for having me, janelle. I think one of the less anticipated consequences of this coronavirus quarantine was a shift in the educational responsibilities to the household, especially for Young Students. Because at this time, many parents are taking on additional educational burdens. And because the fact is that education, and with distance learning, it is a lot more difficult. And so i reached out to some of my friends and classmates who had previous contact with Community Organizations, and were thinking how we could really help out in this situation, where students really need, not just educational content, but also some more face to face interaction, and inspiration, and education, and older students, and as a high school student, i found the perfect opportunity. We wanted to really help out the younger students, because of the current situation. Yes, im sure kids would rather actually be tout by other kids, and students, versus their parents, right . What are some of the topics you teach. I know the regular math and science but what are some of the other curriculum that you are teaching with your classmates . Yes, we have lots of different topics, we have, we really like to keep it hands on and engaged. We have public speaking for example. We have science and experiments. We have history. We have writing. There is photography, fitness, mandarin, i could catch up on my mandarin. So lets talk about, were running out of time, but it is only 30 minutes and its tout by people at the high school . Its, we have more than just students from parker, we have a wide variety of High School Students from over 25 different local high schools, all super motivated, super dedicated and were really glad to have them on the team and theyre doing a phenomenal job teaching all of these different topics that we have. And you just sign up . Its free . Yes, all of our courses are free of charge and will continue to be free of charge as long as our organization is here and operating. Andrew lu, from parker, yapa kids. Org, a wonderful idea, a wonderful web site and cant wait to hear more about it in the future. Thanks for joining us. Very nice. Lets head outside right now, it is hot. A beautiful live shot now, in the east bay, looking toward the bay bridge. And San Francisco. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, working not only from home but working in the garden outside where you should be on this night. Yes. Oh, man, my camera is working double time, with its heat outside today, i know a lot of you who know that, youre out for ten or 15 minutes and you can really start to feel that sun. So the hat and sunglasses, most appropriate today, but then every once in a while, in the east bay, you will feel a little bit of a breeze, and some of that slightly cooler air coming in from San Francisco. And i mean it is only slight, but overall, it kind of helps when that wind starts to kick up. And bring you out to the sky camera network, from tiberon looking to San Francisco, and a thin vail of fog to the golden gate bridge, it is out there and it helps to keep the coast in the 60s today. However, look at the warmest, concord, 92, officially the warmest day so far this year. And napa, 90. And san jose, 88 and redwood city at 87. The area of high pressure, i think it maxs out tomorrow, and with the hottest weather on friday. And as it is pumping in the warm air from the south and ridging all of the storm activity way up towards alaska. But the good news, about this heat, is while we will look at some low 90s again tomorrow for the inland valleys, close to record settings, we will start off with some cooler numbers, so this will at least help to give us some relief. Especially if you dont have air conditioning. 52 in the trivalley a good rebound for the peninsula, 54. In the south bay, at 56. And so if youre up late tonight, or into early tomorrow morning, you will probably be able to crack open windows and get the cooler air in here. San francisco, 55. The north bay 53. And get up early tomorrow, and do your exercising outside, and maybe get the kids and home schooling going a little bit early. The best time will be 7 00 a. M. To 2 00 p. M. And avoid the hottest part of the day tomorrow. So you get that fresh air. And down in the south bay, you will see were warming it up two to five degrees and that will put us at 92 in san jose. For the east bay, we are going up to 94 in concord. And now, with the heat like this, it is common sense, but remember to drink plenty of water, take frequent break, a cool towel on the back of your neck helps and dont forget the hot car damage. A car with the windows rolled up, could be 30 to 50 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. For the peninsula, we are going up to 87 tomorrow in redwood city. San francisco, 66 for the outer sunset. A mild 74 for the mission. And the north bay, up to 92 in napa. My extended forecast, drops temperatures down to 63 by sunday. And then we will see the spotty chance of some showers by monday. And tuesday of next week. For the inland valleys, mothers day down to 77 on sunday, and then that spotty chance of some showers moving in. A quick look at that, and you can see by monday morning, were dry, but its by monday evening, when we could see some of that storm activity, roll our way. So we will have more updates on that coming up at 6 00. For right now, im going to enjoy the sun out here. Get my shades on. And you cant see it but i am wearing shorts you guys. Never thought that would happen at work. But here we are. I love it. I will save you the leg shot. If you can jump up so you can prove that youre wearing shorts. Can you do that . Just kidding. Ill take off my mic. Do you really want to see it. I think were out of time. Hes going to do it. Nice job, jeff. Up next at 5 00.
